I don’t expect young people to understand this type of music any more than I understand the popularity of today’s music. We lived in a period of time when music was meant to be listened to and it was performed by people who knew how to play musical instruments. There was no auto tune. No dancing on stage. It was all about the music and nothing else.

WHAT no stage show? And maybe dress like an accountant? Thinking Phil Collins. You mean just listen deeply. Get out!

Some of the best harmonies. Back in the day they had to be able to sing live and therefore had to have great voices, and when you could get three or more voices on the same page like this it is legendary. Bands like this don't exist anymore.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash (and Neil Young, who joined later) all play guitar and keyboards. In addition, Stills has played bass and drums (close friend Jimi Hendrix wanted Stills to play bass in The Experience), and Nash and Young play harmonica. All four artists have written amazing songs, their genres mostly being folk rock and country rock, although pure rock and roll is on their resumes, too. Stills also has reggae, Latin, and gospel influences, and he plays wicked blues guitar, both acoustic and electric. Crosby (RIP) had blues influence, too. Stills and Young are considered the primary electric guitarists (examples: Almost Cut My Hair and Ohio). Young is credited with influencing the Grunge style of music by way of his electric guitar playing.
CSN(Y) was among the earliest super groups and is often called "the voice of a generation", essentially following up The Beatles. The volume of their music is staggering because, like The Beatles, they issued many charting solo albums and played with other legendary performers. An iconic album titled Super Session (with Al Kooper) introduced Stills to many blues rock fans. Neil Young achieved much more in his solo career but did write the anthem Ohio while with CSNY. The reason they used their surnames was they anticipated soloing (like Still's Manassas band) and combining in various ways (like Crosby and Nash did). Young in particular was known as an independent artist who frequently and abruptly came and went. Keeping track of the lineup was easier this way than it was for identifying the guitarists in Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers Band, both of which featured numerous guitar greats.

I guess you could call it yacht rock but when it was new it was the purest harmony rock and roll of the era. These band members represent the best of rock and roll history

What I always loved about CSN is that while they had perfect 3 part harmony, you can still hear each singer’s distinctive voice in the melody. Their voices were all beautiful. This is a nice song but far from their best, IMO. That would be Helplessly Hoping. Wear headphones to listen to that one, the harmonies are like a chorus of angels. ❤ love to you both

One of my fav hippie rock bands of the late 60s and 70s. Great stuff! Good pedigree here. The members came from other sixties bands Byrds. Buffalo Sringfield and the Hollies.

They had a social conscience and had the 'stuff' to speak out about issues important to young people such as war. Like many, they fought the 'establishment' about justice and equality.

A classic song and amazing writing. Just a vibe! No one did harmonies like these guys. Beautiful song. It is considered yacht rock today but that was not what it was called back then. This is known as acoustic & electric folk rock.

One thing most people in this kind of videos miss or seemed not to pay much attention to is the lyrics of the song they are reacting to. This song is a beautifully crafted musical poem and it takes you along in the journey. Why is he going on a sailing trip? What is he running away from and why?
Does he find what he's searching for?
And as he gets to see the Souther Cross constellation he finally gets it. Time to let go. No sorrows. No hate . Take the good with you. Leave the bad behind and move on, the trip is not done. Life goes on. Well that's my take on this beautiful song. Sail on.

They all play guitars and they all share lead vocals. For lead vocals from Crosby, listen to "Wooden Ships". It's not the vibe you're normally used to and it will stretch your musical horizon, but it's worth the listen. For lead vocals from Nash, listen to "Teach Your Children", "Our House", "Marrakesh Express", or "Wasted On The Way" (from the same album this song is from).

Definitely playlist worthy under sail, or anytime. This song was created by, or perhaps most accurately adapted by, Stephen Stills based on his experience cruising under sail from Southern California to French Polynesia. If I recall correctly Crosby was also a serious sailor.

Boys, it's very interesting how the two of you are into what I would call classic rock. Unfortunately, they don't make and sing this kind of music now. I grew up with the Beatles, Crosby Still, Nash, and Fleetwood Mac to name a few. My favourite from Crosby Still and Nash was: Teach Your Children Well. .. I had the opportunity to go to a Fleet Wood Mac, David Bowie, and Bryan Adams live concert to name a few...cheers...West Coast of the USA.

This was 82, so it was a surprise they had 2 big hits off this album, in an era of Duran Duran and Pat Benatar. Most of their hits were 1969 and 70, yet this felt pretty natural, didn't seem like they were pandering to get on the radio

You should absolutely react to some Saraya, as they sound pretty similar to some of the bands you reacted to in the past. They were a female led band from New Jersey who were around at around the same time as the aforementioned artists but unfortunately were nowhere near as lucky to receive the same attention, as they only lasted around 5 years together and disbanded in the early 90s (casualty of the changing of the guard in rock, one of the most undeserving if you ask me, as Sandi Saraya (the titular singer), Tony Bruno (guitarist), Gregg Munier (keyboardist), Gary Taylor/Barry Dunaway (bassists) and especially Chuck Bonfante (terrific drummer especially for the music they play) were extremely talented musicians with a knack for S-tier songwriting and musicianship, as well as thoughtful and deep lyrics for glam metal/80s hard rock standards. This is to me especially showcased in their masterful 1991 sophomore and final album When the Blackbird Sings, arguably one of my all-time favorite albums. Here are a few requests of their catalogue:
    Love Has Taken Its Toll
    Gypsy Child
    Runnin' Out of Time
    Back to the Bullet
    Drop the Bomb
    Queen of Sheba
    Hitchin' a Ride
    Seducer
    When the Blackbird Sings
In the Shade of the Sun
New World (scarily relevant ballad, especially these days)
Hope you react to at least a few of these tunes in the future!

If you two would learn what the lyrics/story of this song is talking about, you might like it way more than you do.. Also find out what the "Southern Cross" is while you're at it, since it's the title of the song and is the main focus point on this break up, clear the mind journey that Stephen Stills made once on his sailboat named "MUSIC"..

  • @rk41gator
    @rk41gator 11 дней назад

Folk Rock, if you must categorize. That is actually Stills 'yacht' in the video. So guess it is truly yacht rock. Not all music is meant to be background or dance music. Some is just to be listened to for the lyrics (Southern Cross is a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere). Oh, they all play guitars. They all sing lead in different songs.
"It's a chill song" I hear often, guess that is the same with jazz.

I recommend you listen to more 70’s rock. I know you like the 80s but those bands are considered heavy metal, 70s more straight rock and roll. I love both decades but the Stones, Zeppelin, Doors, Pink Floyd, Queen, the Who, Lynard Skynard, Fleetwood Mac, etc…

  • @Johnny96ri

    It's folk-rock.
Steven Stills wrote the lyrics....after a divorce, he actually spent several months wandering on his boat. (Called, IIRC, the Southern Cross.)
It's actually just Stills and Nash-David Crosby wasn't on the recording. Stills sings lead, with Graham Nash doing harmonies. Released 1982, this was CSN's last top 40 hit.

    • @frankgerlach5059

Wrong, I listen to this group from the their beginning and I hear all three! Stills was married to Judy Collins she divorced him and he spent some time trying to get her back, listen to Suite Judy Blue Eyes and thats who he tried to call from a bar in Avalon. David Crosby died a few months past BTW. Google it.

I feel so sorry for the kids in your generation; you missed the golden age of music. You missed the sounds and words that spoke to your life and made you feel something.. You missed the great variety of styles from rock to hard rock, folk rock, country rock, acid rock, metal, symphonic rock, and on. Music ar relevant today as it was then, and make you feel af 50 years had never passed. I can't think of a popular performer today worth the $25 we used to pay for a concert. You missed the most exciting 3 decades of music that will ever be.
