If you feel up to it you should cut out some "patches" from your extra resen and stick it on one of the armor panels that would be shielding something very important. So it would be like your Titan got hit mid campaign and they needed to strengthen the area hit until they can get it back to be more totaly repaired

If you want to make realistic looking AP shell impacts, drill a hole part way through, then fill it with your filler of choice, standard tamiya putty works well. Let the putty dry until it firms up a bit, then push into it with a blunted cocktail stick or the end of a paintbrush handle, something like that, something that fits the size of the hole, this will make the putty bulge out a bit round the edges in an irregular way showing the displaced metal from the point of impact. Push at an angle to make a directional hit, you can cut a gouge with a hobby knife before the filler stage to show where the shell came from. Once this has dried, you will have a really nice looking non-penetrating shell impact. If you have too much putty pushed built up around the edges of the hit, you can chip it off with a hobby knife

The hole done with the sphere sanding thing needs work. You should take a look at some tank model makers such as nightshift for what they do for armor damage. Essentially smush some putty or greenstuff into the holes to make it bloom out of the made holes makes it look much more realistic.

I know you might never read this, but there's a RUclipsr that goes by the name of 'Night Shift' who does battle damage perfectly; for the holes, the best way to do it is to make the hole with the tool, then put a bit of green stuff inside and use the same tool to push it in and make it seep out around the edges.
Tank shells and impacts from high velocity weapons don't just leave perfect divots, but they 'move things out of the way'. In the case of dense armor like that, all the impacts minus the one that actually punched through would leave a raised lip around the edge of the crater. From there you can do the classic cuts and marks around the edge to add more character.

Awesome weathering. I like the suggestions here of focusing more of the scraping damage low on the model to represent infantry's feeble attempts to hack down the titan, as well as the putty ideas for mimicking metal deformation in the larger impacts.
The other thing I would add, though, is evidence of repairs. This could be as simple as leaving some panels very clean - maybe even new. I imagine that when an armor panel gets too badly damaged, it would be replaced. Or this could look like using putty to mimic welds. I think this would add some nice character and built up the impression of age.

So, I'm seeing a lot of comments about making the damage more realistic, but some panels might be in a state of partial repair. Maybe the toaster-botherers don't just pray at it and pour molten steel into the hole, they prep it by removing damaged material first (while praying), and maybe because the super-techno-science-magic which would actually fill in the hole takes ages (much of which is praying and cyberdong related), they've just had to bolt the panel back on while the titan goes and opens several shipping containers of whoopass on the enemy.
This leaves it entirelty possible for some damage to be newer and thus more 'real' looking.

It might also be cool to use some putty and make some temporary patches over some of the damage, a quick repair job before the next fight.

While most of the damage is superficial, the huge thigh hole is begging for an improvised patchy repair. I don’t think a hole that structurally significant would be ignored, which would tell more of a story.
Also in general those blast holes look less blasted and more sanded away, so you should try roughing them up a little more IMO

What might be interesting is not just damage effects but also 5000 years of repair and re painting. Like Weld marks of new plates that are filling old damage and paints jobs that don’t quite match because they can not get the same blue any more.

I’m always very excited to see more titan updates from you! This mini, err, maxi is going to be absolutely epic.
As far as the verdigris, different metals corrode in their own ways with different colors/resulting damage. So depending on whatever this behemoth was built from it might have several types of corrosion happening. Once you get to working on any hydraulic rams, the working surface might be nice and shiny steel, but and portion of the ram that is constantly left in the elements will be red rusty, with possibly a built up ring of corrosion.

love the colour scheme and I think the titan is going to end up great, maybe add some dark silver metallics to the battle damage though? the metal under the paint would show through I think, right now it looks a little like the panel was repainted after it was danaged. keep up the good work!

I think the most 40k thing is the fact that some insane chaos Astartes probably jumpacked on this thing trying scratch it to death on the higher plates, only to be subsequently obliterated by the defensive weapons seconds later.

Looks amazing! might as well jump on the backseat modeling train myself. The lower portion would be much more battle scarred from small arms, with the damage fading out the higher up it goes, maybe with a big chunk taken out of one of the upper panels. Definitely needs the smushed out craters as well, and maybe some scortch marks too!

This is what I miss about pewter models, I had a metal dreadnought I hit with a high speed drill and metal drill bits back in the day to give it some cool battle damage. Pewter is soft enough you could plunge it in and pull it out quick enough to give it the ascetic that an armor piercing round hit and detonated inside the armor blowing the metal outward. Then you could just put a drop of silver paint in the recess after the detail paint, some edge highlight with silver, and it truly looked like a bullet hole in metal.

  • @SampoPaalanen

Honestly you could use those "made by a machine" bits as parts where they've repaired some larger damage but the techpriests didn't quite have the correct materials for doing that and have to make due with what they had and thus there's tool marks where they bonded the original plates to the repair patches. Titans are old after all but they do get repaired if there's the knowledge and the materials to do so, that's why they last so long after all.
You can use that for other "older" WH40K mechanical units as well after all even if stuff does get repaired, those repairs aren't gonna bring the vehicle looking like it is brand new and you might see "battle scars" that aren't literal weapon impacts.

"i dont want to spoil anything, but hes a murderous con artist by the end"
    good job avoiding spoilers
also you could try doing the blue first with an airbrush over a white primer, then mask the trim with some tape and do the black
might not be "fewer steps" but might considerably speed up the blue

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but in the future, you shouldn't wear the gloves when working with any rotary or spinning power tool due to their ability to catch a thread and pull your hand closer to the tool being used, like a cutting disk.

  • @insomniacg

Small suggestion: if you mixed in some copper or bronze parts into the metal innards instead of doing them all silver then a) you could add some little bits of verdigris/patina to echo the icy blue of the armour panels throughout the whole model, and b) it would contrast nicely with the panels and bring out the blues (because colour theory is cool like that)

While it does look really cool, the reason that things usually look pristine when they're deployed is because they are. Soldiers of the Imperium try to keep their equipment in top condition as to keep the machine spirit pleased, a titan that gets huge battle damage and is then just locked back up isn't a very happy titan, it needs a manacure before and after war

A tip I heard from Adam Savage on his channel about how they used to paint battle damage at ILM (it's his video on the x-wing model if you want to find it); anywhere there'd reasonably be paint over paint, such as on designs painted on armor pieces, a quick dot of the color that's underneath and a grey/black scorch mark inside is a quick and easy way to do battle damage

I'd suggest adding some metallic shine to the edges of the damaged areas, as if a little bit of the bare metal is visible through the corrosion. I'd also add some streaks radiating away from the craters to mimic the damage caused by the high velocity fragments of non-penetrating high explosive shells skittering across the surface. There are a ton of images of battle damaged tanks to look at, if t want a better idea of what that looks like.

Guy, have you considered mounting the armor plates on your titan in a way that they can be removed? Perhaps with magnets? This would make switching the Titan's allegiance relatively easy. There are some interesting 3d printable Chaos themed armor plates out there, and I'm sure you could make/modify your own unique designs. The midwinter mini's themed paint job looks nice, but it would be cool to see Warlord Titan, under going corruption so it's old livery is still somewhat visible, marching to war along side its new Nurgle buddies.

Nice. I’ve never worked with resin so this may not work but I use a very old word burning wand I’ve had for decades and it has different tips. I use a small narrow tip to punch into armour. It gives a interesting melted look to the hit area. I use the flat one to score panels to make it look like they’ve been hit by las fire and on rare occasion I will heat a panel and slightly pull to give a melted looks
Also when doing the blast craters I would advise small nicks and cuts into the sides of the craters to show cracking, start with one or two and increase if needed.
Love the colour scheme as well.

It's looking really good that Guy, I particularlier like the way the colours look together. It could be interesting to add some panels that look like they've been welded on to cover damage, I would assume over thousands of years a bit of repair work may have been done, I think it could help tell the story of the titan, like maybe they've used parts from a rhino to quickly patch things up for battle, .
