How would you improve Golden Demon for 2023? Also, just to be clear, this video has not been sponsored in any way, but I was kindly given special permission to film in places you usually can't... especially in the exhibition! Huge thanks to James Workshop for letting me waggle my camera around your secret bits.
I would find a way to make it an inclusive online experience. Maybe people take their models to their local store for professional photos to be taken, that are standardised across the world. Then people who have entered get priority on buying tickets.
I agree with some smaller events, but maybe have them as waves? Like the "good old days*", 'evey metal judges travel (maybe not all of them, just some of them) to smaller localised events. Split them into the regions, GD northwest, GD southwest... etc etc. Then do the big ones, GD Cardiff, GD London, GD Belfast... etc etc. With the final being at the GW HW for the champs of their respective categories, and then the champ of champs. * good ole days being when it was in the NEC in Birm, oh what a childhood.
so cool that white dwarf model will be on display forever now, imagine people walking by every day and taking a gander at your model! Great for you guy
It's so heartwarming to see the childilsh like reaction of the winners, no matter the age. I was smilling with them. Our hobby is truly a beautiful thing !
This hobby has breathed new life into me, and I'm not even connecting with others yet over tabletop. Just working on my army, toiling away over Lore videos and Black Library books.
I think the idea for fixing Golden Demon is a good, but would slightly refine it to be multiple qualifying events. Break it down to have a specific number of applicants from each event move on to the final, with minor awards granted to those who qualify and the actual Golden Demons being handed out at the final. That way you keep the prestige of the award while allowing people their opportunity to submit entries
It would be nice to have it like almost a tournament circuit. Like local GD qualifiers, to regional qualifiers (at the state level in US, regionally in UK so you'd have maybe 100 entries per category), then the big one at the end of the year. It'd be a nice way to celebrate the mid-upper tier painters who while they can't compete at the true GD level, deserve to be awarded for their effort. And to demonstrate to mid-lower tier painters the continuum from their painting skill to a GD winner level.
@@lv100Alice sucks, but if you can't make it it means you are not yet good enough of a painter. I don't think GD should have low barriers to entry, it's the pinnacle of the hobby. Local painting competitions are more adapted to people like you and I who don't have the painting skills for that level
@@sailingsinbad7899 The comment is not about having not enough skill to qualify for the final but about being qualified for the finals but not being able to travel to the final
One answer is to have several regional golden demon events, where the winner from each region goes onto the main Golden Demon event. More events, more ticket sales, more money for Games Workshop :P
@@sticy5399 i think so too. It's a celebration of miniature painting art. It's also a tradition. And it does give content for white dwarf, website community, etc.
Something hits so hard hearing the MWM theme play over the montage of all the winners. A mixture of the nostalgia of the MWM theme from watching since Sandstone Necrons getting me back into the hobby since I was a tiny thing 18 years ago, played over a collection of some of the most talented individuals in the hobby give a very "Well you started here, and this is what you can end up achieving" feel. Thank you Guy for always providing the best inspiration.
That was brilliant! I may never get to experience this in person but your coverage gave me a sense of emotional belonging in this community of hobbyists and artists. Thank you!
Hey Guy. I’m just a random subscriber, and I think I’ve been watching since a few videos after your original sandstone necrons. I recently kinda got back into the hobby after a long hiatus (life happens). The scene of all the Golden Demon winners with your soundtrack was just so stunningly beautiful. It warms my heart to see so many fellow Warhammer fans jumping out so hard after winning and the slowed footage and the sci-fi music just made me starstruck. I’ve really enjoyed all your content here, not excluding your personality, and though you couldn’t enter GD this year, I wish you Godspeed next year in getting a ticket. You stay safe, and have a good one.
It is absolutely impossible to not smile wholeheartedly whilst watching people receive their awards. Legends every single one of em. God I love this hobby.
Getting your painted mini in their display case is absolutely winning. You should definitely feel like you won a huge prize there lol. So many fantastic paintjobs.
I feel like while you weren't able to get a ticket to golden demon, having your White Dwarf as a display piece in warhammer world seems like a great trade off.
I'm going to be honest, I think this is my favourite of your videos( I've watched it about 5 times already).Keep it up! I agree with you with the improvements but ,as you you said, it is biased towards the UK but Warhammer was made in the UK so I think that's fair.

11:55 I always tell everyone who wants to start a youtube channel that success doesn't come from being the most talented, or even the most passionate in your intended subject matter. The best stuff comes from Film and A/V nerds, or general renaissance men who count their intended subject matter among their interests. You put together entertaining videos that can draw in folks that may not even have that much interest in painting themselves.
Great video and well done to Steve! It's always good seeing the hobby community being very supportive especially around such a prestigious competition.
This was a joy to watch. Thank you, Guy, for all your hard work, and congratulations to all those who were recognized for their skill and passion for this hobby.

Truly such an amazing experience that i hope to have one day. I had goosebumps watching this video, and seeing everyones reaction to winning what they did was just so wholesome!
Oh...so you are not allowed to film in there? Wops.... I think bringing back the international Demons could help a bit. The UK Demons are the most prestigeous of course so people will want to go to that, but you would have a lot of international entrants that would enter on the mainland since that's closer to them. Basically restraining it to UK through regionals only sounds a bit unfair - this hobby is practiced and loved worldwide! One more thing we must not forget: GW does not care that much about making it fair and a well thought out and organised competition. It's a marketing event run by a company. Now I believe ALOT of the people involved care - judges, community team, all of them love the hobby and care for the painters, but let's face it: The company does not; the higher ups that call the shots and look at the numbers do not. Additional events? Costs money! We all wish the GD would be something more than it is and dream about how GW could perfect it, but I will not hold my breath as it is mainly that - a marketing event that was good enough for them the way it was for a long time now. Also did you just call me a crybaby? 🤣
To be fair I've been lurking in the model scene and never heard about the Golden Demon competition, until RUclips decided to show me this video. 40k kinda dropped off the map for me when local stores stopped stocking copies of the magazine I'd been buying to start a collection. I'm more into the bandai/kotobukiya models and I can agree that their international competitions in gunpla and elsewhere are absolutely legendary. Would like to see something like that in the minis scene. Seeing how talented people are motivates me to get better at the hobby, and they really need to capitalise on the social aspect instead of gouging people just trying to get into the hobby.
@@alecmiller5296 They've clearly made a few considering they are the front-runner (by a landslide) in Wargaming. As a business they've definitely made some sketchy moves but in all fairness; the kind of have no choice. CEO's of companies are compelled by the LAW (as per their position within the company) to make decisions purely based on what makes them money. They can be held accountable and even prosecuted for doing anything outside of that. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see more customer friendly decisions and I don't condone some of the shit they've done but at the end of the day, if they don't make money, they won't be in business.
What a lovely video. I was dreading your critique of GD but was pleasantly surprised that you did it in such a way that highlighted the 'fix' more than the actual issue - a very welcome change to how things like this are generally handled. Watched your stuff for years and this video earned a sub. Thanks for the great GD coverage!
Bruh, that ambient touch on this version of the outro, is banger, imma open ableton and slap reverb on something, the acoustic is nice as well, good low ends and nice filler Edit: I also cried on my kitchen floor when seeing the montage, I'm 27 and been sobering up after wasting my life for 10 years, when I was a kid all I ever wanted was one of those trophies and it was just too much to see that, knowing how ive wasted my time and where my life is at. Don't get me wrong I'm so happy for everyone who won and seeing their smiles was nice and Guy, you make the days easier with your content, so that's nice too.
You’ll get there one day. No time is wasted if learn from it and seize your present. Best of luck! I and many others hope and await for your submission to GD!
only just caught your video... been a Warhammer fan since i was 9... and been to WHW a number of times... it was so nice to see your video showcasing all the winners in the montage at the end but as a new person to your channel you defo put so much heart into what you do... thanks for all the hard work you put into the Channel and look forward to more of your content... you are awesome Dude... hope you can enter GD next time! 👍👍
Having been to Warhammer World in Nottingham I agree with your suggestion for more events, they do go to great lengths at Warhammer World to make sure the space they have is not in constant use for events but rather open for people to come and play games and try out paints or simply browse the shop and display cabinets to see what they like. Wahammer World is a mecca for the hobby but I don't think it should always be the place for Golden Demon to take place, more competitions, more opportunity for more people to join in, more better. My counter suggestion would be Golden Demon stays "prestigious" and a new competition is introduced in which more members can compete, perhaps finalists of said competition move onto Golden Demon? Not sure if a tourney system would be the right fit. Great video guy! This will be great for viewers who are unable to visit the mothership :)
Pretty perfect pre-Primaris proportions! 😆Thanks for a predominant positive presentation! It didn't occur to me how much of a hurdle GW's paint-naming conventions could be to a red-green colour-blind painter. Your mini came -out very cool. Holding Local Heats for Gold Demon, and having them feed in to the Slayer Event, could be a way to expand the competition without overwhelming the 'Eavy Metal Team. Congratulations to Steve for his results. It was nice seeing quite an age range in the finalists. 9:07 The Necron grasping the Black Templar standard is a lovely touch on that entry. 9:17 The background on that other Black Templar really howls Rogue Trader artwork. 9:21 Ooh those bases are super well blended in to the plinth. 10:53 That's moody as heck.
I was there the week before with my 10 year old son, whose mind was suitably blown by the museum :) In fact we entered the hall where people were just playing games with their own armies and my son was just saying "look at that!" on repeat for the rest of the day (thanks to everyone who was playing that day for their patience with an extremely excited kid) Gutted we were a touch too early to see your White Dwarf mini in the shop cabinets though Guy!
Watching your conversion reminded me of my first Space Marines that I built as a kid. I didn't have any storm bolters so I grabbed one off a Rhino and glued it to a chainsword arm. It looked ridiculous but I still have it. I was super proud of it at the time
This video is one of the best bits of Golden Demon content, my suggestions would be more of this! Winners interviews, pro photography of the minis etc.
Really REALLY, Enjoyed this video. I've yet to make it across the drink to get to WHWorld in UK. Its heartbreaking. But I still have some time before my tombstone reads "I'm Not Here" I came to your channel trying to find the details on how you did your necron paint scheme. I'm working on my first army and I'm afraid to start slinging paint until I'm TOTALLY happy with the scheme. Everything is put together, based, and primed. With your necrons I think I've found it, but still haven't managed to find the video. Though this was delightful to sit through in the meantime lol. Thx
This channel is a fuzzy, warm little place of happiness that always leaves a smile on my face after visiting. You make the internet a better place. Thanks for sharing all this cool content with us. ♥
it was such a pleasure meeting you! and amazing seeing your white dwarf model in the cabinet 😊 hopefully next year you can enter! such a great video as usual
It was the best GD I’ve ever seen and to be able to see it all in person and meet so many great people was amazing. It was truly fantastic to meet you buddy and I’m proud to finally have another bucket list thing done - being in your video 😊😊😊
New 40k fan here, this event looks awesome and one day I'd love to say I went to one, even if I never pick up a mini and paint it, or play the tabletop game, I've really started falling in love with not just the lore and aesthetics of the models, but the community itself seems to be really cool too. Glad to be here to enjoy the fun with you all.
As cool as it was to see the Golden Daemon entries on the main site, this felt like a real taste of what a trip to the competition is like. Loved it! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Well done Steve, and also huge grats to you Guy.. Anyone having a mini at GW HQ is a huge honor! And I found your solution great! Another, miiiiiight just be limiting it to one entry per person :) Will lower the stress on judges, and who knows, making painters focus on one piece might just push the limits and make it even better
I think this video is an absolute triumph, well done sir! I think having a golden demon every season (spring, summer, autumn, winter) with one slayer sword per year (best of the best) would be great and wouldn't dilute the accolades at all. The hobby is growing and this competition should grow with it.
Watching the montage at the end, I thought; "damn, that dude has a killer hair/beard setup going on, and his style is great!" then I saw him get another award, then the slayer sword, and just said to myself, "makes sense"
Great mini Guy! Bet your still buzzing for you're mini being on display! Congrats 😁 I agree that having more Golden Daemons around the UK is a great idea 👍🏻 gets more people into the hobby that way and they should have some sort of a moving exhibition while doing so and have lots of mini competitions. Keep up the great work Guy! Can't wait for the next "titan..cough" video...
I’m totally with you on the names for the paints I’m colourblind too and for years my models all Looked plain with main a solid colour due to having no clue what each one was!
That was AWSOME, I have been in this hobby for roughly 100 years (well in truth it was in early 1979, when Citadel Miniatures became part of Games Workshop which was announced in White Dwarf issue #11: and I had just joined the US Marines at 17 years of age) I have always wanted to win a demon, alas it was not to be, so having been part of the GD contents through many years this was a great video to watch. So much appreciation to your ever growing love of this hobby, truely thank you for the trip . Peace and thanks. be well.
I've always been a fan of Mike McVey's Horus vs the Emperor diorama, ever since first seeing it in the 3rd edition Space Marine Codex, really opened my eyes to what people could do with the miniatures I was crudely slapping paint onto. 20 odd years later and I'm still continually impressed by what other people can achieve, especially for the Golden Demon competition. Congrats to everyone who took part!
My kind sir you may have not got a golden award but I believe what your channel has done for all miniatures painting and building and how I kind of feel like you've carried it back into the mainstream you got me back into doing it again so I believe you deserve all of the golden statues that's just how I feel
The thing that surprised me the most is how good the food at bugman's looks. Like you'd think that event food just sucked by nah that looks absolutely crackin'!
How about, more events, but the first 3(+) are knockout out events for the final one at Warhammer World. People submit models to them and get judged by the same team and the top models get taken forward to the Golden Demon event at Warhammer World. The winners of the local events get a local event award (something different to a Golden Demon) and a ticket to the Warhammer World Golden Demon event where the finalists are chosen from the whole years entrants. Spreads out the judging, increases the capacity, but doesn't diminish the prestige of the main event. It would build up the hype too and if you missed an event you'd have a later event to try and get to.
How would you improve Golden Demon for 2023?
Also, just to be clear, this video has not been sponsored in any way, but I was kindly given special permission to film in places you usually can't... especially in the exhibition!

We all wish the GD would be something more than it is and dream about how GW could perfect it, but I will not hold my breath as it is mainly that - a marketing event that was good enough for them the way it was for a long time now.
Also did you just call me a crybaby? 🤣
Yeah gw isn’t known for making good decisions so I’m not holding my breath that they’ll improve anything
Awesome to see all those genuine, warm smiles. Thanks for the coverage, Guy, and as ever, your considered insights.
Dude your soundtrack is so good. Somehow calming but hype at the same time, perfect painting music.
Bruh, that ambient touch on this version of the outro, is banger, imma open ableton and slap reverb on something, the acoustic is nice as well, good low ends and nice filler
Edit: I also cried on my kitchen floor when seeing the montage, I'm 27 and been sobering up after wasting my life for 10 years, when I was a kid all I ever wanted was one of those trophies and it was just too much to see that, knowing how ive wasted my time and where my life is at.
Was good to meet you!
I smiled throughout this whole video, guy. I just enjoy your balanced approach very much. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm.
Thanks for the great look behind the event. I do like your idea of a series of Golden Demon in the UK to get people excited.
only just caught your video... been a Warhammer fan since i was 9... and been to WHW a number of times... it was so nice to see your video showcasing all the winners in the montage at the end but as a new person to your channel you defo put so much heart into what you do... thanks for all the hard work you put into the Channel and look forward to more of your content... you are awesome Dude... hope you can enter GD next time!
I was there the week before with my 10 year old son, whose mind was suitably blown by the museum :) In fact we entered the hall where people were just playing games with their own armies and my son was just saying "look at that!" on repeat for the rest of the day (thanks to everyone who was playing that day for their patience with an extremely excited kid)
Gutted we were a touch too early to see your White Dwarf mini in the shop cabinets though Guy!
Watching your conversion reminded me of my first Space Marines that I built as a kid. I didn't have any storm bolters so I grabbed one off a Rhino and glued it to a chainsword arm. It looked ridiculous but I still have it. I was super proud of it at the time
It was lovely to see the joy in all of the winners. And the entries!!! OMG such incredible painting on display. Well done to everyone.
This was so incredibly uplifting! Seeing all those smiling faces! I just love your videos! Thank you for all the work you put in!
This was awesome. You're model is awesome. Nice vlog. Keep up the good work.
You truly eserve the golen ticket! Best of luck for next time! I love your videos BTW
I belong to a lot of Warhammer painting sites...but yours is my favorite, it makes me feel good just to watch it.
The emotion evident in the winner's face, actions, and poses... really brought joy to my heart, to see! Great video.
Congratulations Steve! Can we get a video about his entry please? Also the guy who won the sword also wins best dressed! 👌
It was lovely getting to say hi to you on the Saturday! (I was the one sat with Annie in Bugman's) Great event, I'm looking forward to the next one :D
This video is one of the best bits of Golden Demon content, my suggestions would be more of this! Winners interviews, pro photography of the minis etc.
I love these videos they ha e got me through painting my entire army
Great video as always, this really fired me up to paint and improve
Really REALLY, Enjoyed this video. I've yet to make it across the drink to get to WHWorld in UK. Its heartbreaking. But I still have some time before my tombstone reads "I'm Not Here"
I came to your channel trying to find the details on how you did your necron paint scheme. I'm working on my first army and I'm afraid to start slinging paint until I'm TOTALLY happy with the scheme. Everything is put together, based, and primed. With your necrons I think I've found it, but still haven't managed to find the video. Though this was delightful to sit through in the meantime lol. Thx
Love that your mini got into the cabinet! great video
Maybe a national tournament of qualifiers and a bit finale at Warhammer World where the Slayer sword is given?
This just made me all warm and fussy inside, great reportage!
The whole video put a smile on my face throughout. Thanks, dude.
Those dioramas are amazing! 🤩
Genuinely made me smile seeing how happy everybody was. Thanks for the video.
This is brilliant! Thanks for covering this so we could see!
Great video, loved the follow up with the White dwarf subscription
your content is so well paces. Relaxed, and just perfect pacing and interesting. Also, montage with that music
Fantastic video! There were so many different threads and subplots that could have stood on their own, but they were perfect together!
Amazing video Guy, such a great positive vibe
That's so cool you got your White Dwarf model on display!
I’m totally with you on the names for the paints I’m colourblind too and for years my models all
Looked plain with main a solid colour due to having no clue what each one was!
Went to Warhammer World today as it's my local game store, saw Grombrindal (In SPAAACE!) and had to take a picture! Great video as always! 👍
Great video! I really enjoyed seeing all of the awesome paint jobs!
Congratz on getting those 12 months :D
Simply love your videos. Keep being awesome.
Peace and thanks. be well.
You captured so much joy and excitement in this video Guy, and for whatever reason it pulled hard on my heartstrings.
Did I see Mike in one of the shots?
Haha thats is awesome. Congrats to all those who were able to enter and won. Sadly missed out this year but hey now ive got more time to improve.
Your a legend sir! I look forward to. Seeing your mini next time I go to Mecca!
Bugman's is an absolute highlight of WHW: great food + reasonable price + Primarch-worthy portion size = excellent overall 👌👌👌
