I really enjoyed this video. We are seeing too much of reality TV seep into the hobby with 24 hour challenges, paint one mini in 1 hour etc. This was a breath of fresh air to remind us of why we love the hobby and set unrealistic goals sometimes. The best part for me was that y'all were happy with what you've done at the end which is the most important part. Love the paint schemes and great editing!!!
I totally agree! It just isn't a realistic target for people (myself included), and I think it can make people feel a little down about their own progress. I've tried (and failed) at loads of 24-hour videos because life often gets in the way, and that is ok! 😀 also, thanks for the kind words!
Yeah, I had to tell myself that it'll take 2 or 3 sittings for me to finish one scarab occult terminator, thought I'd have the whole squad painted in a couple days🤣
So, I've really enjoyed the old Squidmar challenge vids where he had friends over and jammed some crazy challenges. That said, I 💯 % agree that it was really refreshing to see this natural , honest, take on painting and building some minis. I'm a bit inspired by it. Thank you for making it. This is the first vid I've seen from BW, but it got my subscription, I look forward to more. Hopefully, an update when finished?
I couldn't bring myself to rush through painting a miniature like in these challenges. Far too stressful for something that i love to sink my concentration in.
About 10 years ago, I decided to repaint my 200+ Tyranids. They were still in the original color schemes, with some in orange and others in blue/purple, with the skill of someone who had been painting for a couple of days. I decided I wanted one swarm scheme too. But ... I had four kids and a wife. My hobbies were always placed at the bottom of the pile (and 40K is expensive). So, I decided to share color schemes between my Tyranids and Space Marines (Imperial Fists). Boltgun for bone, Yellow for skin, and blood red for exposed muscles. This combo was easy to paint and cheap. It was much, much faster than my old schemes. Add a black wash and some white highlights and it is quick, easy, and cheap. Thus, I completed my Hive Fleet Maelstrom. :) Of course, part of the speed did come from painting the same layers on piece after piece. By the time I finished one layer, the first pieces were dry and I could start on the next layer.
Thank you for the realistic approach to painting. I always appreciate that both of you speak to the importance of your lives away from the painting table, too.
This video is honestly so amazing it helps show people that it really does take more time than you think especially for new beginners, I currently work 24/7 so finding time to just paint is very difficult especially when one mini can take me 5-6 hours. Everyone has their own pace and this video helps bring that to light.
It’s weird how Ciara has a distinct Irish accent generally and I think nothing of it but I also got to that same exact phrase and thought “omg that’s the Irishest anybody has ever been” 😂
Having seen the Nids in the Broadsword shop last week, the colour scheme and the bases are class. Well done to you both, it is a commitment to bang out these big boxes to a deadline. Can't wait to tackle these myself.
I considered warhammer once after I flopped in a Magic tournament and wandered into the tabletop room. ."Well this looks fun..." Then I soon realized all the extra work and money involved on the baubles needed to play....and ran for the hills. Honestly....these gaming companies really do make a simple dice game extraordinarily expensive. Imagine rolling up to a Warhammer game with bits and bobs found around the house representing your army? The rules would really be the same...except you have bits and bobs instead of fancy models....yeah...go home. My kid wanted to play D&D. So I bought some dice and a couple pads of paper. We are playing D&D.
Always love your videos and the authenticity of them. Was good to see the new boxset painted aswell, those space marine sculpts have come along way since my first set in the 90s. keep up the great vids both and thank you for sharing.
I'm planning on doing a Starcraft Zerg-style scheme for my first Tyranids, and this gave me some great ideas for how to do the purples and greens. Awesome job!
Ciara's faces are amazing, I know you did a video on faces once before but please can we see another, her painting skill has come on amazingly since her first mini. And your stuff is good as well Oliver🤣
Nice video, I'm still painting mine. One recommendation I would make with this box is to just do the combat patrols first. Yes the big screamer killer is lovely but it's not part of the combat patrol so leave it until later. That way you feel like you are achieving something cohesive sooner, although I am breaking up the Termagants into t20 chunks and painting something more exiting in-between.
Cool video man, I like the colour schemes. Very neat! I felt like this video didn't have enough views for the amount of work you put in and I thought maybe this one comment would tip the algorithm scales lol.
Ciara regarding zenithal: "...it was super smooth surprisingly." People like to rag on GW hobby products, but their sprays are actually awesome for smooth zenithal undercoats. I backed-to-backed a few brands and GW sprays seem to be at a higher pressure and produce a finer mist of spray, so zenithals come out less spotty than many other brands.
Yeah, it's actually really useful for miniature painting. We painted the HH box together and learned to help each other out with that too. Like yourselves, we are the same around the house! It's good, communication and being able to tell when someone is fed up, is good haha
you,re to harsh with yourself, i think its a fun easy scheme that fits really well in the snow! before you said you used snow bases, i wanted to comment that they loo like they evolved to hunt in the tundra, kinda like snowy dinosaurs - esque... i would be proud and happy to play games with these. fun video - and "dont pressure yourself " is always good advice
Just wanted to say a big Thank You for your closing words: It's a hobby, take as much time as you want to! ❤ Nevertheless, those colour schemes look amazing! I absolutely love the purple on the Tyranids and for me being a stupid german the black, red and golden armor on the marines looks fantastic...😅 Greetings from Germany! The Emperor protects!
Walked into a Games Workshop last week after never touching a miniature for over 20 and walked out with £65 worth of Tyranids and paints, had no idea they were the new thing but love it. Painted my first few this weekend and I'm gunna be spanding so much monies doing this agn. And btw nobody in the UK pronounced Tyranid like that in the UK in 90s, I had to ask an older collector if I was going mad but he said no, that's was how it used to be pronounced . . . . . Thanks america lol
so i have a nid army, and well... it took me i wanna say close to 2 weeks to paint as well, tho i didnt have the leviathan box, i had the combat patrol starter box... fair note i did partially start my blood angels, as i wont be using the space marine combat patrol, as stat wise, they feel.... bad.... idk... but yeah... it definately takes time, and the more time you spend the better they can turn out. i recommend you ask around at your local hobby shop that sells 40k sets and stuff, find the experienced painters and ask for help. my first minis painted were geller pox infected kill team, and they turned out really well for a first time painting, but after getting that brush work experience, and learning tips and tricks from other painters, my nids turned out way better than if i just went along with what i learned strictly from the gellerpox, ie i wouldnt have the edge highlights on the armour plates, i never wouldve washed them with the right shade if at all, the only reason i washed the geller pox was to sickify them with a green overtone... so yeah... all in all, dont be afraid to try new things, and always reach out to those around you with more time doing what you find interesting to get a better understanding of what your doing. also while i do agree, having a base line for what you want in the end, dont be afraid to tweak it mid project if you like something else... my marines changed lke 3 times and are probably going to change a bit more before i finish them lol
I think the most important thing to say to a newbie is that it really doesn't take long, as scary as it looks, the paints especially the shade paints really do bring out the model so it looks fantastic with little effort.
Lovely jobs! Love the Flesh Tearers results, and the light-armored 'nids, however I think I kinda like them on the dark slate city rubble bases sans the snow effects. It makes their brighter color scheme pop a bit more I think. Still two thumbs up. 👍👍
Almost a breath of fresh air of someone painting in a realistic time. First thing that came to my mind GW: releases something pretty big Squidmar: We're staying up 24 hours to paint it now! ... alrighty
I did just that. For some colour i have added a various dark purple simply for variation. Otherwise i would have play reaeal hard at the black-grey shading. Its still pretty cool though :)
The best trick is to prime the figures with dark colors and apply a white(gray) dry brush on them to give volume to the details. Then just paint simple basic colors with white highlights here and there. The result is very decent and enjoyable to paint; no frustration during, no dissappointment after. Oh, I almost forgot = you 100% need the very thinnest brush you can get your hands on, for the faces etc.
Cool challenge ! At one point (back when I worked for GW) I could have done the entire contents in about 2 weeks, not so much anymore. I think you both did very well !
Tyranids are the most fun of the two to paint anyway. I mean Space Marines are great and painting a uniform, armour scheme looks cool. I'm definitely more excited to paint the Nids though.
I... kind of really like tyranids with a white carapace. I haven't even started collecting yet, and when I do I plan on getting CSM.. but weirdly nids look fun to paint.
This is why we see majority od Leviathan promo videos being a "How to paint a SM" tutorials. Tyranids were left behind because of their organic forms that require different approach.
The tyranids was the part of the box i was actually excited about. Flamer marines and termos does not make me need to go and have a lie down you rattlecan indoors? the pigments go everywhere and they are not really good to inhale either. I do all my rattlecan work outdoors and under a bikeshed roof if its raining. If you have a garage that is not used for car storage that is another good or at least better area for it then in your house. the propulsion gas in rattlecans is not meant for internal use
Thank you very much for the content! I am going to start with miniatures. I have some experience with modelling, mainly war. I have painted with both a brush and an airbrush, but I see that my paints are not suitable for miniatures. What brand of paint would you recommend? Also, I suppose that if I decide on a brush set from Citadel, The Army Painter or whatever, I can't use these paints with the airbrush?
Never painted before, don’t even have a set. I’m slowly getting into Warhammer for obvious reasons, the universe is sick. Was just curious if there’s a Skaven set to paint? I really love those guys!
Hey! welcome to the hobby. Yeah, you can get yourself a Skaven Vanguard set from Age of Sigmar. That has loads of cool stuff in and is a great set to pick up. You can also grab one of the Paint and Tool sets for Age of Sigmar, they're really good value and give you a good set of paints and tools to start wtih. :)
Great video. Thanks... and I am on Ciaras side "anything is better than tyranids" (damn I really hate painting them) aside to this: I really like the look of your armies. the marines from ciara are awesome. but I really like the color scheme and the job done on the tyranids (as much as I hate painting them by myself)
Not to try to sound negative or anything, but helps a lot getting a better outcome using something like greenstuff to make the model look like a single pice. But that takes a lot of time to perfect, understand why you would skip it
takes me like 1-3 hours, sometimes more per model just to prep and assemble... before any painting. I have seirous OCD when it comes to removing mould lines xD I take them off with a medal edge, similar to the mould line remover from gw... Then I'll come back with various grits of sandpaper and smooth everything down.
Maybe we missed it, but, how long DID it take? I’m not sure that question actually got directly answered? :) Great video, you may not have needed to ZP those minis given how thick your base colours were, and could perhaps saved a little time here and there but the outcome was pretty damn good, not to mention I’ve got so many unfinished projects that I now feel shamed into actually cracking on with one of our boxes. Thanks for the video.
I would love to get into painting warhammer figurines but I’m colorblind and all my figures would be black, white and red. Couldn’t tell you what shades either . Sucks.
If you are me, then you decide to paint a box of 10 sisters aka space nuns and I'm about 3-4 weeks in after buying the battle box thing, and I have the nun squad only mostly pained to a reasonable standard (for me) and no heads completed yet (due to eyes needing me to be a freaking robot with microscopes for eyes and the hands of a fluffy neuro surgeon.) I will get there, looking forward to the flying nuns, but yeah a battle box is likely to take me about 6 months lol, at least.
Its flesh tearers. They're a bloody angel successor chapter, so you're not far off. They have black shoulder pads, black backpacks, and are a darker red. 😀
I enjoyed this video! For the snow effect did you just brush water on then sprinkle on the snow? Does it stay stuck do you need to spray sealant or something on afterwards?

IMO it's actually hard to screw up Tyranids.
@@nathandanner4030 I managed to mess them up.

Lol really, 24/7!!! Impossible but nice hyperbole.
2:56 Braver than any (space) marine: Wearing black to spray white indoors [Just realized I wore black to spray white today]
The Tyranid color scheme turned out really good!
Thanks! I really wasn't sure about it (as I had several schemes I liked), but it looked alright in the end! Just a few more to do too.
It did?
Nice job on all of the figures, ESPECIALLY given all of the store/family/editing you had to accomplish as well! Grats you two!
in the most Irish accent ever: "becausemydelicatelittle LAAAADY hands were getting sore" 🤣Never change.
Ah, Beejaysus
It’s weird how Ciara has a distinct Irish accent generally and I think nothing of it but I also got to that same exact phrase and thought “omg that’s the Irishest anybody has ever been” 😂

She has a light accent
Cringe comment 🤢
I’ve still only painted 12 space marine models and 15 tyranids from that box set
The pile of shame grows ever higher…

@@BroadswordWargaming lol. But seriously. You got a wow out of me. Very nicely done for such a short time frame.
Great channel you have here, both obviously incredibly well spoken and skilled. Great shots, short and concise content... Well done.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing job! Personally I am a fan of taking my time on miniatures, it is fun and relaxing to slowly paint things up.
Thanks! I agree, we should enjoy the process, it's a hobby after all! :)

I'll take that. It's normally him or Rik Mayall haha.
Great stuff! Next time I’m in Castlebar, I must drop in.
Please do! 😀
Great video. I'm painting my Tyranids Pink, Grungy White and cyan
That sounds great! 👌
I love that every video teaching Warhammer is like "You have to rattle can outside" and then she's just doing it in your living room lmao.
You definitely should do it outside (ideally with a mask). We shot like 10 seconds of footage in doors and everyone is telling me off. haha.

It's so nice to see an honest video on how long it really takes to paint a model! You should both be proud as your paintjobs are excellent 😊

Tyranids are the most fun of the two to paint anyway. I mean Space Marines are great and painting a uniform, armour scheme looks cool. I'm definitely more excited to paint the Nids though.
When I built and painted my Blizzard Force for Star Wars Legion, it took me 2 months, about 20 models (5 vehicles included)

Nothing wrong with that. If you're enjoying it and getting a few bits done, that's great! 👌

Can I get a paint list for the nids?!
Got to ask, how well ventilated is your studio? All that spraying...
We didn't spray the armies in the studio. Literally one shot, for about 7 seconds.

Awesome job, Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Love the video!
Which one is leviathan again?

Brave to do white spraying while wearing black.
If I tried that I know what my black top would look like at the end.
Great video - I've subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for subscribing 😀
Depends on the time you allocate to it and your ability. I still have some of my third edition models unpainted...
takes me like 1-3 hours, sometimes more per model just to prep and assemble... before any painting.
I have seirous OCD when it comes to removing mould lines xD
I take them off with a medal edge, similar to the mould line remover from gw... Then I'll come back with various grits of sandpaper and smooth everything down.
I can’t wait for my leviathan box I preordered it through my local hobby shop now I’m just waiting for the calm to go pick it up
>anything is better than tyranids
Oh, so you decided to attack me personally and hurt my feelengs?
Maybe we missed it, but, how long DID it take? I’m not sure that question actually got directly answered? :)
Great video, you may not have needed to ZP those minis given how thick your base colours were, and could perhaps saved a little time here and there but the outcome was pretty damn good, not to mention I’ve got so many unfinished projects that I now feel shamed into actually cracking on with one of our boxes.
Thanks for the video.
Tyranids are the best! Love to all of them ❤️
I would love to get into painting warhammer figurines but I’m colorblind and all my figures would be black, white and red. Couldn’t tell you what shades either . Sucks.
Big brain bug also known as the 625 points in the leaving cert bug
If you are me, then you decide to paint a box of 10 sisters aka space nuns and I'm about 3-4 weeks in after buying the battle box thing, and I have the nun squad only mostly pained to a reasonable standard (for me) and no heads completed yet (due to eyes needing me to be a freaking robot with microscopes for eyes and the hands of a fluffy neuro surgeon.) I will get there, looking forward to the flying nuns, but yeah a battle box is likely to take me about 6 months lol, at least.
apologies for asking, but im confuse for the marines color. what chapter is this? cause its more to blood angels :D
Its flesh tearers. They're a bloody angel successor chapter, so you're not far off. They have black shoulder pads, black backpacks, and are a darker red. 😀
@@BroadswordWargaming damn i never heard about flesh tearers, gotta read that one. 🫡
I enjoyed this video! For the snow effect did you just brush water on then sprinkle on the snow? Does it stay stuck do you need to spray sealant or something on afterwards?
Well done looks awesome!
