Never get into shooting, i suggest. With prices now you can get 10k in those two bags without any problems, and then you have one gun and some ammo. No holster, no clothes, nothing of the stuff the competition rolls in with 😁
The beginner missed his chance, he should have hired a pro to paint the mini for him and kept what was left. A true win, win.👍 Remember, “it’s all about the Benjamin’s Baby!”
My two main takeaways are: Money is no substitute for skill, but it does save you time, effort and affords you more practise, and if you're wargaming on a budget, look at what Andy chose to spend his money on to know where the biggest bang for buck will land.
you probably haven´t got that many free colours from the shop if it hadn´t been squidmares local shop and everyone know they did it for the video. It is not like they took the "dollars" (toy money most likely) in payment other than for the show
I like this idea, but i think you missed the opportunity to force Andy to get some dollar store paints and brushes and see him fight with those materials. Great video though
As a swede. To be perfectly honest i dont think you could. We dont really those stores where you could get that. Unless ordered online. He might be able to get waterpaint and kids brushes for that money.
Joel is absolutely unhinged. The obtrusive thoughts of every mini hobbiest's inner child they want to set free. And he did really well. And Andy isnt just a master painter, he also is also knows the expert ways to eat a biscuit. Loved everyones results.
Swede here, been a fan of joel (member of ijustwanttobecool), one of the biggest swedish content making channels. And ive also been a huge fan of alphaspel. Very fun to see all you 3 in the same photo lol:D
Think what this really shows is that yes having more money allows you to do more, BUT having skills a good brush and good selection of paints is what matters most.
I kinda understand some of that brush pain. After buying a few sets of Artis Opus....man, a lot of brushes that I used to think were decent went into the trash brush jar to be destroyed by glue and stuff. And I'm sure people will tell me that his brushes are only "ok" but were still a ginormous upgrade.
10:44 That's seriously a beautiful location. Can you imagine the sun shining through the openings in the back? Instant production value right there. Absolutely gorgeous.
Fantastic! Seeing Andy, one of my biggest idols, Joel from ijwtbc who I grew up with on youtube and of course Krister, Emil and Lukas, is downright gold!
I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in one of Andy's painting classes a few years ago. He really made a point about how basing material can really elevate a mini to a higher level. And, sourcing those basing materials from your own back yard was one of the key features. He even brought some basing material all the way from his back yard in England to Las Vegas for us to use. Good to see he's still about making his own basing materials. Pretty snazzy looking Necron as well. 😉
This was somehow extremely entertaining, thank you. Can you imagine what they could have pulled off if they all 3 had cooperated though? Imagine a Necron Lord fused into the chassis of the Ork monstertruck, corrupting/ taking over it, with the cleptomaniac Ork slaying a Tyranid as they are about to go off the ramp/ jump...
One thing that might help newer painters get started is to get a starter paint kit like the one from army painter and maybe a killteam or spearpoint box and show what can be done with just the tools/paints in the kits.
It's wild hearing someone with a ten dollar budget paint something incredible and still be disappointed lol this was a super fun challenge and everyones work was great
A pro with 10$ clearly showing his craftsmanship and abilities, was so clean and well blended was my personal fav, just for making that work of art happen on such a minimal budget
it's great when big channels share the spotlight with other painters so we get to know them. People like me have never heard of folks like Andy... 22x Golden DEMON! That's phenomenal. Thanks Squidmar for introducing me to this great painters and entertaining folks. The models all looked fantastic.
Cult of Paint is a big channel too, probably one of the biggest painting channels :P although Andy is mostly in charge of their Patreon videos, but he still does some videos on youtube as well
I think for fun they should have put the minis together and grade them 3rd, 2nd and 1st place. Nothing serious but would have been nice to see the them together and show the difference between the paint styles and experience.
I still thought Andy's piece was the best. The other two were great, maybe bigger, more involved, but end piece, the atomsphere, focus etc, still best on the necron.
Super fun concept. Loved the video. Also super fun highlighting local game stores....if I had 10 bucks only though....craft/dollar store all day every day haha.
Never have I ever thought to comment this ever before. What an exciting sponsor! Just something i needed to get to work! Video was great too, like they always are, thats a given!
Started watching and was totally hooked by the concept! Got to say that given the limited resources, Andy came out with something truly amazing... I just wonder if the dude at the hobby store knew who Andy is and that he was dealing with one of the world's best painters? Money matters... but only to make life easier. Shows that it's actually skill and experience that matters even more. Thanks team for a rad video ❤
@cbjewelz hey, I'll tell you what I tell my club mates. Any progress is progress no matter what that looks like. And if it's only fun in small stints, and you don't have a deadline to have a model or army painted. Do that, if you're looking for a social setting try finding a local club, I'm sure they do hobby nights, it may just be everyone jumping in a vc in discord, but it can help immensely.
It was funny the way he said "Uhu!" for the glue because we used to have a TV commercial in the UK for UHU glue that had the tagline "Don't say glue... say YooHoo!!"
The best joke would have been if the guy with the 1000$ would have just bought some paints, and offered the rest of the money to lukas to paint the miniature for him. That could be another challenge for you guys. You each paint a miniature but the other picks the paints.
I love Andy’s cold and methodical approach. What do you get ? - Black and White hah It has been fascinating to see what he chose to focus on, with the few points of interest on the mini. High end content as always !
sounds like you get paint too far into the bristles. make sure to not get paint more than halfway up the brush, or it risks getting into the ferrule and drying up, causing the brush to split
More money allows for buying the tools that speed up a point job and help give good effects. But raw skill shines on a low budget. The golden deamon winner went with a simple less is more and looked like something that could compete. And remember him and the 40 year veteran painter didn’t have all those wonderful tools available. It’s something I keep in mind when I buy weathering paints or the like. I’m using something had I started younger I wouldn’t have had available.

Love that in this hobby $1000 worth of stuff fits in two medium sized bags
If you're a noob and go for the overpriced stuff, sure. It can even fit in one bag.
Seems excessive, I'd get one full bag TOPS.
1000 for two bags? usually its just one
now look at the volume of a 4090 :D

That was my first thought: Just commission one of the other guys. :D
Yeah, Emil gives him the cash, he turns around :"Hey Lucas, you busy man?"
Hahaha, that was a good one!
You should have included how each of the contestants reacted to the other contestants' mini.

I like this idea, but i think you missed the opportunity to force Andy to get some dollar store paints and brushes and see him fight with those materials. Great video though
Yeah, the $10 and the $50 were basically the the same of money in terms of what they got. An actual $10 budget would have been more interesting.
As a swede. To be perfectly honest i dont think you could. We dont really those stores where you could get that. Unless ordered online. He might be able to get waterpaint and kids brushes for that money.
If a commission painter with 40 years experience is the middle ground, dear god what am I
In their world I bet it is 😅
Middle ground guy was still worse than the 10 dollar guy. The necron looked better than the tyranid, skill level wise.

he said it straight up.
