Excited to see if you do Blood Angels next! Either a bright red tactical squad or maybe you can do a death company squad lead by a 2nd edition chaplain? Keep up the great work.
After you apply the microsol, instead of using a Q-tip, brush the decal out from the center using a flat /square brush. you'll get much better surface blending.
I also think (even though the vintage guide show the sword as one solid color) that he missed some blood dripping from the Captians Sword. Thoughts on this ? I think there's two visible blood drippings on the front of the sword & one on the back. Maybe GW didn't want to paint it to violent but they molded dripping blood in case someone wanted some blood dripping? Any thoughts?
Ah man I can't seem to escape the Dark Angels! My buddy and me have gotten back into the hobby recently and I'm having recurring nightmares of bouncing ineffectually off of his deathwing.

This was profoundly relaxing. I don't even have nostalgia for this era of minis, having gotten into this hobby only 2 years ago, but something about the calm and methodical approach you take here alongside your soothing narration makes this video like a warm bubble bath.
i showed this video to my friend's grandpa, who has been painting and playing since 2nd edition (he fell in love with Plague Marines and has not let go since) and he was amazed at how authentic these look. Good stuff!
I really hope you have the box art Sergeant with power fist. I know that there are other valid choices for the period, but in my opinion that would be amazing to see.
Army Painter Goblin Green does have pretty good coverage but like with most AP paints you need to shake it to hell and back, and once you think you've shaken it all that is possible - shake it some more. Paint agitators are a must in every AP bottle. If you threat every new AP paint like you're bringing it back from the dead you won't got far wrong.
They have a bit of extra medium in them. It has instructions included. Shake, empty out the extra medium, shake again and the you're good to go. Great paints.

I feel like that sort of distinction is missing from modern 40K - now _everyone_ is decked out with gold highlights and the like.
Blood Angels! Also this has been great to watch. That box set was my first exposure to Warhammer 40K and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I've thought the Blood Angels looked way better since they got rid of the black trim on the shoulder pads, but it was thanks to this set that I developed such a love for both the Dark Angels and Blood Angels.
The army painter goblin green probably had such awful coverage because guy didnt pour out the medium before using the paint. Army painter paints always have some medium on top of the paint when theyre brand new
I was hit by a huge wave of nostalgia...not so much for the minis, but because this game is no longer around except in basements. Honestly, and this is not even against the current 40k, but I wish THIS version of 40k was played and sold in stores today. Well done on your paint scheme, quite a re-creation.
Love the video Guy! I only got into Warhammer in the last 3-4 years but seeing all this retro stuff is a treat for sure! Even if I wasn't around in the hobby back then I still get a small wiff of nostalgia seeing you get so giddy
Very nice. It's rare to find a shining gold that hasn't solidified into a solid mass. Brazen Bronze is even more rare. If you lay your paint pots on their sides in your box rotate the bottle 180 degrees once a month. If they sit in a box flip them over once a month. That will help prevent the metal pigment from fusing together. The Classic '88 line from WarColours has excellent replacements for the original metallics. Some of their colors are perfect matches and some aren't. But their metallics are very close. Coat D'Arms are the right colour of course, but they don't have the right consistency. The old paints were naturally a bit gummy as they had a strong vinyl medium and nobody makes paint like that anymore, but that consistency made dry brushing much easier especially when touching your brush on the very top of the built up medium pushing up around the inside of the rim from paint that had been sitting a long time in the box, although you had to wash your brush after every stroke since it dried super fast. The transparent Goblin Green you tried to use is probably a phthalo-green instead of a chromium oxide green so it doesn't cover well. True goblin green is opaque and is close to olive drab. It's called goblin green not because of a fictional fantasy setting but because of the color still on the miners who used to harvest the pigment when they came out of the mines in England since they called the miners goblins. True story. You need a correction though: Coat D'Arms makes an Enchanted Green that matches the original, but Citadel called theirs Glistening Green. Coat D'Arms' Enchanted Blue is just a blue version of the same semi metallic paint as you have (originally called pearlescents by plaster painters), but Coat D'Arms naming convention here is a bit confusing because originally the boxed sets had a color called Enchanted Blue which was an opaque plain primary blue that from what I can tell used iron blue/prussian blue as the pigment to which they added white. That color seems to match Coat D'Arms Light Blue. Their Bavarian Blue is also very close but just slightly lighter. Glistening Green didn't come in the original boxed sets you showed, but rather in the Metallic Boxed Set. wow, nostalgia hit me hard on that one! It´s exactly the paint scheme I used for my Dark Angels 3rd company beginning of the 2000er years. I made sure to take notes on the color for when I might pick up a brush again, since the whole color changing from citadel scared me off to try again. Great video!
YAAAAASSS!!! The nostalgia, the atmosphere, the paint job!! Wonderful! You COULD also try to paint the night lords! Very interesting scheme, i think you'd like it
Hey Guy, could you go ahead and just narrate all the Horus Heresy novels please and thank you? But seriously, you've got a wonderful voice to listen to. Obviously your voice sounds nice, but you've got a cadence to your speech and a sound as if you're smiling while you speak that's so pleasant. Like, you could read how much I owe in taxes and I'd be having a great day.
Those early 90s coloured metallics were fantastic. Not just the green, but the blue and purple as well. I've never found good replacements for them and still have a hankering to paint some 3rd editional Warhammer fantasy High Elves with scale mail painted the metallic blue...
Space Wolves, Orks, Eldar, Ultramarines, Tyranids, and Imperial Guard all come before it. Chaos and Angels of Death we both eased in ‘96, Chaos may have been first I can’t really remember & my copies are elsewhere so I can’t check. Those two are the best of the 2nd edition codices imo. I do wonder where this info come from cause this isn’t the first time I’ve seen a youtuber get that wrong.
@@thebag1981 Eldar and Orks may have come before Angels (I thought Eldar did when I posted) but the Angels definitely came before the others. I collected Ultramarines back then and was mocked by my Dark Angel Blood Angel and SpaceWolf collecting buddies for not having a Codex because Ultras had nothing special about them (they were not quite the poster boys then) I also bought Guard when it came out after Ultramarines, and my Tyranid collecting mate bought his Codex when that came out pretty late on.
@@davidmckay335 I would swear Ultramarines came out before Angels of Death, but that may be a faulty memory 😂. Eldar was the first codex I bought in ‘94 so it definitely was.
One of two warhammer I watch. Appreciate your genuine attitude towards the hobby, the fact that you have more than one painted army, and that you are not just constantly sucking GW off.
I'd say the Army Painter metalic set would best replicate the old metalics if you just don't happen to have 30 year old paints sitting around. Its got a emerald green similar to this, and the gold looks very close to its corrupted gold which has that bit of green tinge to it like the pot here has
I confirm this, very close match. Shame that army painter's non metallic base paints have garbage coverage though (all of them..). But their metallics and washes (tones) are fantastic and I use them all the time.
This took me back 25 years when I first started, I used to watch my brother for hours and then copy his paint jobs. I still have a bunch of the old paints
Really feels in your last few painting videos like your skills have improved lately Guy - would maybe love to see another judging video like the collab you did with Trovarion in the future.
Those marines look absolutely fantastic - the banner looks especially good! I'd love to see Blood Angels next. As someone who just recently got their hands on some of these classic marines, it'd be awesome to see more 'Eavy Metal tutorials!
I like using white ink on my whites as well and mix in a dot of matte varnish and a brush loaded with water. It helps the ink stick much better to the flat surfaces and eliminates the “wash effect” you get with the thin consistency without sacrificing opacity. Love these classic boys! Well done!!
They look amazing, great job. Slight note though, the "3" denotes the squad number, the company number is denoted by the red line on their knee (3rd company as it happens) :)
What are purity seals, are they like space marine participation awards? I reckon the way you painted the green armour looks much better than the heavily edge highlighted way that Games Workshop currently likes to paint space marines!
This was a hilarious comment to me, joking or not. If you aren't kidding though it's basically like wearing a blessing. Imagine pinning Bible verses onto your armor. Basically what it is in short
That’s kind of like my idea where my custom chapter that was excommunicated but still fights for the emperor and is dragon themed has some loyalist heritics in there ranks that survived István 3 and I’m even painting up a dreadnought as rylanor
Man, nowadays the backpack cloak would be called something like Adeptus Backpackius Cloakius™ and would allow the bearer to wield 3 chainswords or something. Seriously though, I love how these came out!
The fact that 30 year old pots are still salvageable and still look _great_ when painted, yet modern GW pots I've seen dried and gunked up *on the shelves*
I bought a pot of agrellan earth recently from a friendly local gaming store and the paint was so dry and thick I thought it was like their dry paints range at first, nearly impossible to spread on the base. I then bought another pot and the second one was more of a thick base paint consistency. They really are no good at staying sealed are they.. I did manage to fix the first pot with some water though, a bit of water in there and stir the crap out of it with a wooden skewer . I overdid it with the water and made it thinner than intended but you know what? It actually works even better when thinned down like that, I got bigger cracks that way and it was easier to paint on in a thick layer.
I think these might be my favorite things you've ever painted, and quite possibly the best you've shown on RUclips. Tremendous work! Blood Angels next :D
That captain looks fantastic. As someone that started playing in the early 90s these are such a great trip down memory lane. Now I have to find one of those captains for my DA army! Incredibly well done sir!
NGL that In- and outro music kinda gives me these nostalgic feelings that some of the C418 Minecraft tracks do. Probably just me since ive been in the hobby for just 5 years now.
I still think this older style from my youth is more timeless than other modern techniques, especially with the retro colours. I always felt the banners where essential in gaming, especially as at a glance if you had them numbered you knew which was where, especially if it was a large 3 or 4 player game.
I'd leave more than a few minutes after the microsol application before applying varnish over the decals. I usually leave an hour, then a second application of microsol, another hour at least then seal with matt varnish. But that's over fine detail on 1/72 aircraft. Looking fantastic! The shading is beautiful, I wanna try some retro models now...
WowStick also makes a similar hand-held hot glue gun and a few models of screw drivers, all wireless rechargable etc. All are decent and I get use out of them almost every day
I could practically smell the mithril silver paint, the nostalgia hit was so strong! Perfect video for a Saturday morning with a cup of tea.

That’s kind of like my idea where my custom chapter that was excommunicated but still fights for the emperor and is dragon themed has some loyalist heritics in there ranks that survived István 3 and I’m even painting up a dreadnought as rylanor
@@commanderstorm8874 oh no, I just mean I’m using fallen angels
@@ABC-is9zp ah ok
Thank you. I've been collecting Dark Angels for almost 15 years now. Great work!
Man, nowadays the backpack cloak would be called something like Adeptus Backpackius Cloakius™ and would allow the bearer to wield 3 chainswords or something.
Seriously though, I love how these came out!
Alright but 3 chainswords would be awesome
@@mr.potato2223 You're not wrong

Iron hands character
4 chainswords like general grievous
amazing painting, this is the era I started actively collecting myself, I remember those old paints like mithril silver, brings back memories
As a Dark Angels fan, I really enjoyed this video. It’s so cool to see where the army I love came from.
Loved this tutorial- classic MWM content!!
The Demporer stands with you and playing 40k your way!
I really love this retro painting series!!!
The Demperor stands with you and playing 40k your way
I think these might be my favorite things you've ever painted, and quite possibly the best you've shown on RUclips. Tremendous work!
Blood Angels next :D

I always had a soft spot for Dark Angels. These look superb!

I know it’s weird, but I could listen to you describe painting forever.

Really enjoying the series so far, really intrigued to see what you'll do with the spare tactical squad

That captain looks fantastic. As someone that started playing in the early 90s these are such a great trip down memory lane. Now I have to find one of those captains for my DA army! Incredibly well done sir!
Don't forget the Banner!

NGL that In- and outro music kinda gives me these nostalgic feelings that some of the C418 Minecraft tracks do.
Probably just me since ive been in the hobby for just 5 years now.
Great job mate. I love the use of the resurrected paints.
Would love to see the blood angels for sure
Handsome marines, good job ^^
Blue is my favorite happy colour, Ultramarines next, please!
Really gorgeous work. So rewarding to see an inspired project carried out from beginning to end. Marvelous memories and new motivation. Thank you!
You had me at " crusty RIM"
Consistently one of my favourite channels
I was actually blown away by the highlights for this! Maybe I could try it on the newer models
So glad you finally decided to cover the best legion
I still think this older style from my youth is more timeless than other modern techniques, especially with the retro colours. I always felt the banners where essential in gaming, especially as at a glance if you had them numbered you knew which was where, especially if it was a large 3 or 4 player game.
Yeah.. this was exactly what I needed. Loved the video and your work!
Guy I think these may be your best paint job on camera yet, very lovely!
All are decent and I get use out of them almost every day
Them paints really took me back to when I started in the hobby. Loved the vid and thanks for putting a smile on an “old” (🤪) hobbyist
