- How long should you paint a mini for? An hour or two? How about 10... 20?! Maybe even longer. Let me show you how to plan out your time for big mini painting projects, so you can finally call your big showpiece minis "DONE!"

"What's wrong with you? Well, lot's of things actually,"
If I had a nickel for every time I've been a part of this conversation I could buy a Dark Angels upgrade sprew. That's not much money but a crazy number of times.
Guy thanks for making this and showing that it’s alright to paint on “done” models already. Need to go over my older models and touch them up with highlights
Yeah I had never really thought about it this way before. But now I think about it, it was so obvious because really any part of the model is "done" when it dries
I've started doing this a lot. Now I paint a lot of my models to get them what I consider 80% done, so I can get a good looking army on the table (I HATE playing with grey unpainted minis), and then slowly go back over my army a squad at time and finish them up. Add edge highlights and some shading and more details.
Be careful you can lose some some stuff doing it.
If you say Pale Sand three times in a mirror, you can summon a Canadian.
please stop doing that im trying to get some painting done
@@DanaHowl palesandpalesandpalesand!
The weird thing is it's only usually Dana Howl that appears, sometimes it's just some random, confused Canadian.

I've noticed Guy writes with a cursive print mixture, using a continual line to write print letters. I dont know why I found this the most interesting part of the video...
I tended to do that when I had a hundred forms per night to fill out all in pen at one job I worked
A lot of us adapted to do that. Taught cursive for 10+ years only to find out the average person can't read it anyway. So we adapt. Good Catch! You've got a sharp eye.
I do it too!
We don't generally get taught formal letterforms in the UK; maybe people who go to posh private schools might but normal people in normal schools just adapt to whatever kind of writing suits them... so long as people can read it.
That's exactly how I write haha, print letters but just connected
Amazing paintjob!
Personally I think edge-highlighting always makes things look super cartoony though, which is something that doesn't appeal. But that's just a matter of stylistic preferences. The execution is absolutely stellar!
Personally I hate the aggressive edge-highlighting. Agreed, it makes it cartoony and far less mean looking
Honestly, I spend nearly as long on characters as I do on normal troops. Maybe a half hour longer total due to the extra detail, but I normally throw my characters into a batch while batch painting and treat them like everything else.
I do the reverse
Guy is so focused on painting that Dana Howl couldn't even mention pale sand today.
This is giving me inspiration for my recent Octarius acquisition, thank you!

DAMMIT looks like I'm gonna have to change what I thought was my original Ork colour scheme >_<

I thought you'd been summoned here because he said pale sands so many times.

"Deffskulls iz alwayz lootin', so wot if some o da ladz az sneaky armor and sum av' lucky, we'ze still Deffskulls."
Personally my Zapped Ead'z (Deffskulls "Succesor Klan") Orks are a mix of purples, blues, creams and blacks and a desaturated green skin.
They're run from the shadows by a warp lightning powered Gretchin named Ziggurat Skrawl who controls all the Big Bosses from the shadows.
Embrace the colour chaos and the fun is glorious.
My partner belted out a "PALE SAND!?!" in your honor when she heard Guy mention it xD
The queen of pale sand!
"he's not well painted" bro most of us are in our 40s and 50s we can barely see your model from across the table, if it was green base coated with dry brushed silver on the metal we'd say it looks great

Would love to see an extension of this where you take a model that "failed " and make it work without stripping
Taking a failed project and turning it into a winq
God I love watching Guy paint and talk about his color theory. I know hardly anything but its so enjoyable to watch him do it so seemingly effortlessly.
Possible Hot Take: With the exception of missing a few highlights I like your original top skull better. IMHO it makes sense because it's sitting atop the exhaust system for the power armour so it wouldn't be far off for it to be very grungy and dirty. Just my personal opinion but if you're happy with the end result that's all that matters.
Seen at 20:44
I agree. There are some details that came out great with the repaint, but the new purple armor looks a bit...cartoony?
EDIT: Obviously, Guy's opinion on his own model is what matters most. I couldn't paint anything half as good as the (basic) first model in 20 weeks, let alone 20 minutes or 20 hours
@@srk4044 yeah. I really like the new version but it looks like its from a comic book.
The painting styles popular in the Warhammer community are generally more about what 'looks cool' than what is realistic, so the more you do it the more you end up with something that looks like concept art of a comic book or a cartoon character or a CGI render, etc. Edge highlighting has been around as long as I can remember (since at least the 90s) and that's not how light works in real life, but you try telling that to the biggest company and fan base in the industry/hobby! You have to find a style that you like, and not assume that how everybody else seems to do it must be correct or that you have to fit in with them. (It helps that I paint historicals rather than sci fi and fantasy)
I'm with you. There are a lot of areas that are hugely improved , especially the face and metals, but i much preferred the old skull and the overall feel of the purple armour too
I'm sure a million people have already said this, but I was HOLDING MY BREATH for Dana to pop up every time you mentioned "Pale Sand".
The yellows on the final product make me feel warmth in my cold dead heart.
Great job mate!
Been very captivated by purple lately and this video makes me appreciate purple in its applications
Couldn't come at a better time. Painting Da Boss right now and I'm all over the place. Thank you
Well this was absolutely amazing. Love the tips and tricks you always incorporate in your tutorials and the way you show that anyone can paint to whatever standard they want. Really inspires me and I can't wait for the next orky video
Guy! This episode is the reason I appreciate You and your contributions to the hobby so very much.

title say 20 hr, and the video is only 20 mn, i feel robed :D
thanks for the video guy.
Aye a nice video for Sunday
Seeing stuff like this reminds me why i got into the hobby in the first place lol
With the amount of Pale Sand you are using in this video I can just imagine how happy Dana Howl must be!
Just the work on the armor itself sells the piece. Nice
One of my fav' things to go by when making things is "perfection is the enemy of completion".
WAAAAAAAAGH APPY ORKTOBER LADZ! Love being able to watch another awesome Ork video while painting me a Deff Dread!
I absolutely love bright colored paint jobs
Another MWM video! Weekend made even better. Seriously, I watch your videos when I'm feeling low, and they always perk me up. They're always really wholesome, I find 🙂
I always get caught up trying to make every miniature as good as possible. This is such a good way of handling it - paint everything to a set standard and then come back to it later in the future to improve! I usually strip everything and start over, but this saves time and allows you to play with it from the get-go!
I love the new finish!! It feels like something out of a comic book almost, with the brighter edge highlights. Awesome job as ever :D
What's interesting there is the process of speed painting / tabletop painting the army first so you can play with it. Then, "complete" the paint job on the main pieces when you have free time, just to relax and enjoy it. Very sound process.
The king of speed painting spends 20+ hours on a model? Up is down, light is dark, and I am here for it.
The edge highlighting on the armor almost makes Ghaz look cel shaded, incredible
I always have a feeling of joy when I see a new upload
The finished product reminds me of comic book art. It's really cool.
You've painted ghaz the exact way I painted mine last year, so cool 😂 you've done an amazing job. What a way to kick off orktober!
Did you also not paint his bionic bonce metal? Pretty big part of his background lore considering it was the patch-job on his brain injury that allowed him to have visions of Mork and Gork.
Daaaaaammmmmmnnnnn! That mini looks sick. Makes me wish every month was Orktober.
I feel like Guy uses "Pale Sand" as much as Sorastro uses "deck tan". LoL Great video, Guy! Keep up the good work.
I love how well this shows that you don't need to just blast everything with black to make it grimdark, you can still keep vibrancy and colour in while staying grim and foreboding.
Orktober has officially begun!!!!
Of all the RUclips big mini names, you're the one I enjoy the most because you're the kind of balanced hobbyist I identify with: decent painter with a "this is for gaming" approach. I love it.
Great tips. The stippling brush was an awesome touch!
This is one of the best examples of OSL I have seen most people go overboard and obliterate the detail on the areas they are highlighting well done!
I like the edge highlighting. It does add a cartoony feel I guess, but to me it makes it look reminiscent of video game graphics which I think makes it really neat.
That's amazing. Its interesting to watch you work for an extended period of time on one model. You have this wonderful sketchy style, I'd be curious to see you attempt a comic book painting style at some point. You're videos are always an inspiration and they do a fantastic job of making this hobby seem so approachable.
I was looking forward to this video since you had yor grind through your whole army...well done and big thanks!
Actually love what you did with the horns here.
This is very engaging and watchable, which isn't easy to achieve with a painting "step by step" sort of video (granted it's much more than that). Well done, great video!
There is very good paint that make you paint beautiful minitures in lesser time
I painted my first BloodMaster of Khorne a few days ago, first mini aswell, spend a solid 7 hours straight painting, time ran away like nothing, yet it was suprisingly relaxing
The music at about 15 mins in reminded me of a game I used to play on the Commodore Amiga. I racked my brains and then it came to me... Walker by Physignosis. Awesome game. Thanks for that bit of nostalgia Guy 👍😀
TIN BITZ! I completely forgot about it, and then I remembered that I love it. EDIT: Now you're talking about Snakebite Leather! So much unexpected nostalgia
That new Black Metal Midwinter Minis tee looks amazing! I missed out on a wiggly bois shirt in my size, so I am excited.
LOVE Purple Orcs!!! So Incredible Hulk!
Great job, guy.
I thnk that looks really good Guy, love the highlighting style on that purple armour. Well done!
Fantastic video and really appreciated you walking us through your reasoning for each section.
This is such a good tutorial. I feel like you've covered so many great little guides in each hour and i've learned so much.
WAAAAAAGH! playing orks has me all fired up and I can't wait to paint my ghaz after seeing this!
Honestly your 20 min paint job looks better than my 20 hour paint job or what ever I achieved
Mate, i remember getting in to minis when i was a kid in the 80's. My local GW shop buying Citadel paints and over priced lead cast minis. I was earning £3/week at the time with my paper round so it was a real treat to be able to buy this stuff, super hard to afford an army. Fantastic to watch all your work, bringing back great memories. Thank you.
Magic Metal looks beautiful, probably the best brass colour paint I’ve seen.
Literally just rewatched the whole of your black stone fortress series. Your such a genuinely good painter and you make it easy for everyone to do. Thanks guy,

I don't paint minis at all, just sort of like crafts and art and stumbled in to midwinter minis.
But I love the channel and watch every episode! super cozy cheers
Good timing
I’m painting my first miniature today and it’s an ork
How's it going? Have you done it yet? :)
Spent about six hours on it today and it’s looking great
All I have left is the base eyes and highlights for tomorrow
@@lonelygoat2716 ayy good stuff man welcome to the hobby
That thing is insane. I love the paint job
I absolutely love the art style showed off in this video. The saturation mixed with the scratchy very bright, vibrant highlights along with the variations in mid tone shadow and highlight concentration are tons of fun to look at. Good job Guy.
Beautiful work Guy. What a difference.
I Would like to see you paint some of the other big things from your Ork Army the same way😊
I honestly thought we were going to see that model painted in both 20 min vs 20 hours, that would have been very interesting! But surely impossible on something so big!
That's wonderful! Love the texture on the tusks. Pale Sand, steady hand, can't fail.
omg i did that "i got metal on my brush gotta give him a silver tooth" so often :D
This is by far my favorite content! Fast paced vid of a very well done paintjob
Knocking it out of the park Guy. Keep it up
What I got from this video: Vallejo colors and coat to arms black wash are good
Keep up the good work the colour of purple mixed so we'll with the Ork armour!
Glad I found your channel, as an ever improving painter. You have a really simple - straightforward way of showing techniques that is super helpful!
Ahhhh this is my JAM.... I'll be following your fast and effective schemes... I've got sooo much to paint and am still in the build phase. thank you for your continued content... I hope to be able to get mine to this level by the end of the month.... Bravo!
The transformation between paint jobs is quite something. You've come a long way from your sandstone necrons!
that is one good looking ORK
You have inspired me to repaint my ghaz and spend yonks of time on it
I love mixing a shiny metal paint with a colored alc ink to make armor colors. It gives a good color that looks similar to a metal flake paint.
I’m sooooo excited for orktober this is gonna be amazing!!!!!!
It would be Very nice to see you spend more time on the other Models in the speed paint army 😁
This really makes me want to paint my Khorne Daemons!
Fantastic work, Guy. Love your channel.

One of my thousand sons i spent 4 days painting and it looks amazing
Turned out absolutely beautiful. Love seeing content like this and the creative process behind it. Really inspires me to get back into painting.
Oh boy, I just had a midroll add for becoming a potential organ donor which made me cry a little bit.
And then directly back to that monstrous ork.
I think you had better ads than me. The first ad and the final ad I got both sounded like potential fraud.
This looks so awesome if I had that model in my army I would show off how amazing it’s been painted to everyone
I’m excited for the next vid and I hope the twins are doing well
👍
That glazing on the orange parts was incredible. And encouraging to see that it’s achievable! Will always be inspired to paint better and more confidently by you Guy, ever since coming across that first Ork boy video!
Thanks so much!
