Night Watch is actually my favourite of the series, Thud! probably being a close second.
Oh dear, where to start 😬 There are so many! There are all sorts of series within the books, where it would feel odd to single one out. But of the stand-alones, I think Small Gods is definitely up there with the best. Or maybe Pyramids. Or maybe The Amazin-...
Terry Pratchett is my favourite! my soul lit up when I heard you talk about it. I think the best books to start are "The Colour of Magic" and "The Light Fantastic" as they are the first ones in the series. I love them all, Im not sure which one is my favourite
Going Postal or Small Gods are probably my favorite. Honorable mention to Monstrous Regiment, The Colour of Magic, Thud, and Mort. GNU Sir Terry Pratchett.
@@Slye_Fox Yes, this. Night Watch is an absolute masterpiece
Glow effects like these are possibly the most impressive thing a painter can do. to get them so realistic is awesome to see at a titanic scale!
@@BloopTube yea Guy said he was going to do that after everything was done up so that should be pretty cool
Neil getting cracked in the head whilst shouting 'Surprise' will never stop being hilarious to me even all these years later. Also that plasma weapon looks the business. I can only imagine what Vivian from the young ones would do with a weapon like that.
Yeah. Me too
"Hello, shoes" :(
Vyv would mount it on his Ford Anglia then kill Rick with it.👍
As someone who had to learn glow effects for Necrons and now plays Dark Angels this is basically what I do. Great video Guy
Dark angels RULE!!!!!!!!😁
Rather than inks and acrylics, I would recommend oil paints thinned down for the cracks. Just like you can use oils for grime, you can also use them for highlights.
honestly no matter how much you or anyone of you make vids with try to teach just remember that your speed paints are better than my half and hour paints TELL ME YOUR SECRETS
Time, experience, and practice.
@@aazreaal Get out of here with your nay-saying and realistic answers, we want results without effort!
@@JoshuaGoudreau YEAH! *slams down beer* FUCK YEAH!!
You're the real MVP for getting your friend a copy of Space Hulk.
Watching this titan grow from a lowly bunch of resin to the a hulking ancient death machine has been great. Really feels like I'm there with you!
Re: Pratchett: Night Watch was my first. For an entertaining one-shotter, Monstrous Regiment is solid gold. They don’t all feature Sam Vimes.
I wonder if anyone’s made an ins-and-ousts themed guard army.
Monstrous regiment is an absolutely fantastic book
'Going Postal' is also a really good introduction to the Discworld. That's the one I started with, and I'm honestly hooked
7:58 ABSOLUTELY! Nigel Planer *is* Neil! 😎🤘🥰
Everytime I saw him in anything other than The Young Ones, my first thought, my immediate thought is, "Hey! That's Neil! Awesome!"
Gorgeous work on the guns, too.
I'm hoping to use these techniques when painting space ship engine effects. 😎
Excellent video, as always. Thank you for sharing it.
Can't wait for the Necron video Guy! I love your massive army painting videos and the orktober last year inspired me to get a lot of my force done!
Am I the only one who loves the look of the titan as it is just now? Without the armour panels or head it's got a really cool Iron Giant look to it, and the lack of any other colours makes that green pop so much
Great job so far! Just a reminder that any titans (including warlord titans) don't go anywhere without their Secutarii bodygaurds.
WE NEED THE START COLLECTING DEATH MATCHES BACK... when guy, when?
yeah fr
Chaos Daemon codex coming out soon... Tzeentch Daemons in the next game. COINCIDENCE?! :D
@@MidwinterMinis poggers
@@MidwinterMinis OH YESSSSSSS I. AM. SO. EXCITED!
Love it! Steve gave me some tips for the NOVA Warlord AD MELIORIA I recently painted up. Fantastic stuff, love seeing the progress
One of my green-ish yellow plasma recipes for regular sized models is to base coat with white, then another coat of Averland Sunset, then wash with Hexwraith Flame. When it's dry get a mix of thinned down white and yellow oil paint, doesn't really matter which brand, then carefully apply a flow along the bottom of those coils. I hope this helps for anyone looking for a easier solution!
Honestly, I never got into discworld. My experiences were more the "johnny and the.." series and good omens.
Also, this may be controversial, but I dont think this technique scales down very well for infantry. The white should be half way up the plasma coils, with the cooler parts either side of it (top and bottom respectively).
Nevertheless, a great video as usual.
Yeah it seemed way too dark on the plasmagun
Awesome video as always. I'd love to see how you paint other plasma colours.
Man, I really love your channel, your painting skills are amazing and also you are great teacher. Can't wait for retro Blood Angels video!
Yup, Guards Guards is always where I point people to when they're starting Discworld. And Nigel Planer is an amazing narrator for Pratchett's work
Awesome, definitely trying to use Steve's guide for the plasma weapons on my puppetswar strikers.
Seeing Guy using Contrast Paint is a surprising, but welcome thing. Speedpaints next please :D
No
That "pleasant" feeling when your favorite RUclipsr betrays his principles for which you loved and respected him
@@user-eh2rz8ks3k ikr I dislike contrast paints not because of their premise I'm fine with a way to get something done faster or to help beginners, the reason I dont like them is because I dont think they work/do what is advertised. (Before anyone asks yes I have used them and have a reasonable amount of experience with them)
@@JC.Denton. agreed
@@user-eh2rz8ks3k "betrays his principles" is a pretty spicy way of saying "used a product he hasn't used before"
HOLY COW that copy of Space Hulk! What a gift! I wish both of you the best!
Such enjoyable vids from narration, painting, camera work, and all the lthings I don’t even know of. More and more becoming my first video stop.
That is amazing. Thanks for showcasing these techniques. Hatty still big bad 🤣 Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Breathtaking plasma on that Titan (and one the regular plasma weapon too).
It makes me want to go back and redo the plasma on my Fallen, which I was always unsatisfied with.
Sealed Space Hulk. 😍 What an absolute GIFT. #Nice
I love this glow effect but the white kind of ruins it for me a bit. Looks out of place especially on the edge (bottom) of the coils.
Guy you're amazing brother...it is ALWAYS a pleasure to watch your videos...Thank you!!!
I’m excited to see you paint those necrons! I’ve painted my own small army in that style but volcanic rock themed instead.
Ooh do you have a picture or video? That sounds like a really cool concept!
I've been painting up a few Orks for a kill team, and during this time I've been having The Young Ones playing in the background, so it was a nice coincidence when you mentioned them in this video. ("Oh, have we got a video?")
Everyone seems to have glossed over this, but that was a bonkers good gift you got Steve. NIB 4th Ed Spacehulk is not easy to find and not cheap, so you're a real one.
Steve has a much cooler voice than I imagined he had. Good job Steve.
Omg, waiting so much for your Necron painting marathon😃
As a pratchett kid who grew up on Discworld from around '95 to the legend himself passing, I approve this sponsor segment!
The first couple books aren't really worth reading as a new fan. They're great but you can really tell thar he was still finding his feet as a novelist and very much still developing the personality of both the world and its characters.
Even though it features characters from other books I'd still MASSIVELY recommend interesting times. It's one of Rincewind's best outings. Reaper Man is great for getting to know death in a shorter format, or if you're feeling like something longer then you can't go wrong with Hogfather.
What I love about TP is his clear love for England. Warts and all. He injects the Discworld with SO much of the irony and sarcasm of the best English wit. And his lore is utterly STUFFED with British folklore.
Even at 35 years old, after reading his books for pushing 30 years, and owning every DW adjacent book he's printed (including a signed DW Companion) I'm STILL not even CLOSE to getting bored with the incredible world he created.
Good one! I started doing glowy effects just after being inspired by you in trying to emulate your Sandstone Necrons... If you have the time to let it dry over two to three hours: Try Oil-paint pin wash with White. Also for plasma and fire effects... A soft White drybrush of regular (or glaze) paint over... And any Fluor color over. It glows like a C'Tan!
Wow!! I need to try this for myself.
I'm planning to get a few Rad b1s for legion and this has inspired me to make them *_pop_* rather than the normal black with silver dry brush
one thing ive learned the hard way is highlights are much brighter than you think
Goodness gracious great balls of plasma!
Really appreciate that you left your mistakes in the vid. You’re really inspiring Guy!
Oh hell yes, Terry Pratchett is awesome, especially the Night Watch novels.
Finally a good and useful video again
👍👍Looking great!
For what it's worth I use post-it notes for my masking off 😁
I'm going to copy this and stop at 3:50, that was perfect to me.
I've tried several techniques for plasma effects, and drybrush beats all the others when it comes to speed and finish. Reasonable finish but great speed. A white base, then tesseract or some other glowy paint, then white diluted with medium on the bottom, then successive coats of careful drybrush with a small makeup brush (very fine bristles, less of a chalky effect) is the best looking quick solution.
I have rewatched this about five times now and each time I rewatched the playlist, I drew the Warlord Titan armor plates and all except the paint. I want to colour the drawing once the Titans complete.
P.S I'm a beginner Traditional Artist.
Wow this was verry usefull, and i am definately going to be using this on my necrons
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Witches abroad (or any of the granny weatherwax books)
That's a cool Titan!
Quite handy since I need to paint plasma and volkite stuff. I don't have an airbrush and a Titan though.
Thanks guys. I don't have an airbrush yet but I have a McFarlane Marine with a plasma gun good to go I can try this video on.
Many years ago I got a sealed copie of space hulk 4th edition for my birthday
It’s still one of my favourite games to play with friends
Great choice in gift my guy
Hey I don’t mean to annoy you guys but did you abandon the start collecting deathmatch? Or are you still working on that
The Shepherd's crown. awesome glow effect and i have the fourth edition space hulk box set
Welcome to Discworld! You might especially love "Hogfather" - because then you can watch the amazing movie, also starring Nigel Planer as a wizard. 😁
The way i do my plasma coils is a little more work, but i think it looks pretty great.
I just base coat it pure white and then thinly glaze my colour on the top parts, shying away from the corners where the coils meet the gun, and repeating once again in a smaller circle. Then doing a slightly stronger highlight across all the coils, then another but staying away from the corners, then a final highlight darker highlight at the edges of the coils section.
Huh, so that's what flourescent greenish-purple looks like
Guards guards if the first terry pratchett book I ever read
Thank you , Guy .
🐺
I love green plasma coils, it's a bit of a classic.
I love the choice you went with is similar to me Ron energy weapons which already will contrast with the bright blue you have off the armor panels so I get why you had to go with a contrasting color to try and give it some individuality from the rest of the piece
I needed this video. I suck at painting plasma weapons
Really cool
Guy has had so many cameos on his channel recently, call it the multiverse of madness
THANKS SIMON "Big Sigh of Relief"
YOOOOO TITAN TIME
Great video guy
Nice entry to the works of Pterry, just something to keep in mind: some of his work plays with the medium itself, so I don't know if some of the sub-notes and puns work as well in audio form as they do in written form (Pyramids springs to mind as a good example of puns that you might only notice when you say it out loud after trying to get through the weird spellings of words from Djel).
Grat video guide
Small Gods is another good discworld starter
He’s back
The white dots do stand out a fair bit, even when zoomed out at the end. Looks wonky in the middle. Maybe you should have had masked both sides lol
I like it!
Guards Guards is such a classic
Space Hulk!!! Wow! Lucky Steve. 🙂
Glow effects are awesome but I remember once when an avid modeller who does war reenactment models as well as Warhammer got over passionate about how heat dispersion coils would never glow unless there was a catastrophic overload in progress ... Now every time I paint my own glowing plasma coils I hear his voice in my brain cant unhear it and It's almost torture hahaha
Woo titan episode 220! Just a few thousand more and it's done!
My dog loves this video
i think as soon as this titan is painted, i might paint a mini titan for titanicus in the same color sceme!
Might I suggest reading the Discworld novels in the order they were produced in ("Small Gods" being the only one not involving time travel that is actually set in the past). Pratchett basically wrote them all in order building upon previous books like a smooth glaze over a zenithal highlight.
Night Watch is my favourite but Guards! Guards! is also tremendously great
Look at me, I'm Guy and I try and start a series six books in and wonder why I'm confused! Love you and all of your content!
Thanks so much for helping me with my upcoming hellblasters I have been sitting on for aaaaaages. By the way, what ever happened to start collecting death match. I understand the start collecting aren't available anymore but could you do it with combat patrol instead. Either way I'd love to see it again. Keep up the amazing content!
Pratchett's kind of hard to get into uninitiated because his early discworld novels are pretty rough, so the whole thing really isnt compelling if you start (like most people would) chronologically - you can really tell the concept of the world hadnt really concretized in his head yet so its mostly just "haha fantasy trope parody." "Guards! Guards!" really is one of the best novels to start with despite being the eighth book in the series.
Eben pratchetts good friend Gaiman said trat the Early novels Were just „collections of jokes and mostly not good ones“. I worship „guards guards“ but could not for the life of me finish „colour of magic“
I’ve also heard the suggestion to start with a character, not a with a particular book. The witches are a good example, as is Carrot, Vimes or Death.
I'd pick "Mort" over "Guards! Guards!" - and I think the City Watch books really work better starting from "Men At Arms".
Massive Pratchett fan here, but I think he often hit his stride with a given series on the second book of each series rather than the first (Men At Arms for the Watch, Witches Abroad for the witches, Reaper Man for Death, Hogfather for Susan, Making Money for Moist Von Lipwig, etc.)
I started with the first two Pratchett novels (after finding out about the comic adaptation of the first novel), and enjoyed them immensely. With a few exceptions, I read most of the series in order as I found out about them, although a few eluded me for a few years.
Discworld has few different main storylines that allowed Pratchett to tell different types of stories. Those were the Misadventures of Rincewind the Wizzard (a bit of a failure with magic, but quite clever when the chips are down), Death (and later his granddaughter, Susan Death), The Witches of Lancre, The Unseen University, The Ankh-Morpork City Guard, and the Revitalization of Ankh-Morpork.
There's a number of one shot stories, and a few two parters, but even those had worldbuilding and new characters to plots that added elements to later novels. Basically, if there was something that Pratchett wanted to write about, then he would adapt that concept to the Discworld.
Pratchett said himself you should start with Mort...
If you want to start with pratchett wyrd sisters is also a fantastic starting point
very cool tecnique guy
What a bloody palaver.
I'm using this when I start painting my warlord titan
i like that its different to the usual blue color.
Great looking titan, will it fight for the emporor or the ruinous powers?
Grab some makeup sponges (both triangles and sticks) for when you have to clean off a raised area A must have painting tool.
ooooooo thats nice
Very cool but I think I prefer when the glow is like on upside. I makes the gun look like they are hotter idk
also aligns better with the business end of the classic plasma gun disign
That paint job looks *hot*! Get it? 😋
I'll see myself out...
I think the real question is, how many skitarii does it take to change a plasma coil?
Easy. Whoever's left after the pseudoreligious techworshipper infighting after a disagreement on the proper reading of tomes and ceremonial chants when changing the coil (including two major battlefleet engagements and countless ground assaults on enemy forge feins).
69
This is amazing! I do have a question about the colours though.
Is it possible to do this with red? What paints would I be looking at to use if so?
