      Hi, Mr. Stroke!
      It was good and easy to follow as always, don't worry! ;)
      I have just one question: when you mix the technical/contrast paint you use for the glow with their relative thinners, do you mix them on a dry palette?
      Because to my experience, using a wet palette already slightly thins the paint, so I wanted to know if I should take that in account when doing it.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  6 месяцев назад +1

      I use everything on my wet palette.
      If you're finding your palette is actually diluting your paints rather than simply maintaining their moisture levels then I would suggest looking at using a different membrane paper.
      As it is letting too much moisture through.
      Let me guess, you're using an Army Painter wet palette?
      Give this paper a try and see if it make everything better?
      amzn.to/3ngaKi4

    • @eallaterza
      @eallaterza 6 месяцев назад

      @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides No, I usually use either the RedGrassGames ones with both reusable and on-time membranes or Masterons Sta-wet palette with parchment paper.
      Now that I think about it, it mostly happens with already thin paint, like shades and contrast it was just my impression?
      I'll take a look at those you poster though, thanks.

      Now, it’s not as bonkers as it sounds.

    Thanks again for your awesome content ! Definitely one of the highest quality on this platform.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  6 месяцев назад +5

      Thank you
      So, contrast medium and Lahmian medium have different chemical makeups.
      Think of them as paint without pigment.
      So, when thinning down paints like contrast / speed paints it’s important to use their corresponding medium so as to not imbalance them. As it can result in them “splitting” meaning they no longer hold together and apply blotchy and patchy or streaky and dry very ugly.
      Likewise, Lahmian medium should be used to thin down GW’s washes and technical paints because it matches their chemical structure.
      Hope that helps

    Fantastic tutorial! One question: i dont have citadel contrast paints, what can i use instead of those?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  6 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you
      So, to be able to tint like this you really need a strong wash or contrast style paint because they stain the surface too. A bit like a dye, but still being able to see through it.
      So, I’d say try and get contrast if you can or maybe army painter speed paints?
      Failing that you can try washes, but they don’t tend to come in bright enough colours for this effect and you’d need to apply in multiple thin layers and build up the colour without making it too dark
      Hope that helps

    Great tutorial and explanations. One detail, though, is that the glow is very soft. As in it projects colours onto edges around it, but not really any light. Which I think is reasonably well illustrated by looking at the values of painted areas in grayscale (*): the eyes/chest symbol/... indeed have much higher values, but the areas around them do not, or at least not any more than they would with "regular" zenithal highlights.
    (*) which is a trick I believe I saw in one of Trovarion's videos? I can't remember for sure.
    What step(s) would you add to further brighten the glow?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for watching
      Yes, you’re absolutely right.
      This guide is only intended for glows where the light source is not stronger than the ambient/ global light source.
      Occasions where you want to paint a light source which is stronger than the surrounding ambient light requires a very different process.
      It’s not a case of adding additional steps, more completely changing the way the mini is painted.
      Identifying the affected areas needs to happen before the mini is painted at all and the painting, layering, shading and highlighting of all the colours affected need to be painted with the light source in mind right from the start.
      I’d really need to make a whole different video for that I’m afraid.

    Wish I would have waited to do my Necron walker now and watched this video first, but I can try again later. I actually ended up kind of doing the same technique here as you did with tesseract glow but I completely botched the white layer so it's got obvious brush strokes. The large orbs are trickier than the small ones in the blaster.

      I've tried alot of whites. I'm gonna get hate for this but ..... I use apple barrel white. Wal-Mart craft paint.. i add 2 drops of alcohol and a few drops of water. You couldn't ask for smoother paint. And ... it's only 50 cent a bottle.

    Could this be done with a wash instead of contrast paint? Im doing purple on my necrons. I dont have contrast paint but i do have a purple wash. Would you need to thin the wash down?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  4 месяца назад +1

      No, not really.
      Washes don’t have the staining / dye property needed for this effect

    There's one part I'm a little confused by - if you go in with white, then paint over with the glaze, then go white and go over it with the glaze again, how does it end up a different intensity the second time? Is it a different ratio of paint to medium on the second pass?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  5 месяцев назад +1

      Fair question
      So, the way it works is the second area of white you paint is smaller and within the area you painted first time.
      That way, when you apply your second glaze you paint not only the new white area but also the previously glazed area too.
      This means the bigger area will end up with two layers of the glaze and the second (smaller) white area with just one layer of glaze. The result then being a step / change in the intensity of the effect.
      Hopefully that makes a bit more sense now? 👍

    Hey, can someone tell me why to use contrast medium with the contrast paint instead of just using the contrast paint straight from the pot? (new to painting)

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  Месяц назад +1

      that's a great question. So, the quick answer is to change how strong the colour will be. If you think of a contrast paint being like a dye and it staining what you paint it on to. Some times that strength of staining is too much and it overpowers everything underneath. By adding contrast medium you can reduce the strength of the staining and make it more soft and allow more of the colours underneath to show through.

      @@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Sorry if the question is too specific, but I'm planning to use Vallejo Dark Aluminum on my Necrons. What would be a good color for edge highlighting them?.
      Can I simply add white to the metal color, or would that be a bad idea?

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  Месяц назад

      @@themate1065 so, to highlight a metallic gunmetal colour you’ll be wanting a bright silver. As metals have sharp bright highlights
      No, adding white to it won’t achieve a lighter metallic.
      If you want to lighten a dark silver you need to mix it with a bright silver. That way you maintain the metallic nature of the paint but lighten the overall tone.
      Hope that helps

    tbh if you want this guide to be more user friendly use paints from one vendor. Or give alternatives from other paint vendors. Both titanium white and white scar would probably work for white part. No reason to get another white paint just to paint glow
