I recently bought Army Painter's metallic speedpaints, and that has been a game changer for me. They are so smooth out of the bottle, and the colors are rich.

Wait, people don't like GW metallics? I've personally yet to hear somebody not like their metals. The only one I personally have issues with is Liberator Gold, but that's because you really need to shake the hell out of it to get it mixed.
The fun with Retributor Armour is in how well it reacts to washes and contrasts though. You mentioned how well it reacts to shades, but give a go to some contrasts sometime. Guilliman Flesh is adds a ton of warmth in a way that a flesh tone was just cannot do and Blood Angels Red is the secret ingredient to making Heresy era Thousand Sons without breaking out the airbrush.

      Absolutely, you’re so right
I’ve been using contrast over metallics for a long while too 😉

I love my entire array of metallics from Citadel. The Metallics I have the most trouble with are my old AP ones from 5 years ago - they don't cover for anything!

Good job, James. I could have used this advice in painting a gunpla for a great grandson. His favorite color is gold. Ah well, I know about it now and can use this advice on the next build.

I love Vallejo Model Air Chrome as well, my preferred top end highlights for my silver / iron colors and I also used it for my golds for a long time before switching to White Gold from Pro Acryl. Definitely a great alternative. Wonderful recipe, I definitely wanna try Seraphim Sepia to shade my gold in the future. Awesome work

I normally use Agrax for shading gold, I'm gonna switch to Seraphim on my next model and see how it goes!

Did you have a particular scheme in mind?

I would personally just say box art to be honest. They are full with colour and I also don’t know any other Cadian colour schemes 😅

Since you've been focusing on metals lately, i would love it if you could put out a tutorial for painting szarekhan dynasty necrons.
Your tutorials are by far the easiest to follow, and i'm curious to see how your models would look.

Hello! I’m having a problem with my Vallejo model color gold lately, like the one you use before the Vallejo chrome, is it naturally very thin therefore it has a poor coverage? Mine feels like a wash color in the citadel paints to make high lights or something , or is it because the paint wasn’t shaken well?

I have an old pot of Seraphim Sepia, before they changed the recipe. I love how it makes the gold look tarnished, the finish you see in your video looks more like Reikland Fleshshade has been applied instead. Obviously I'm going from the video, which isn't the best for gauging colours, how different are Reikland Fleshshade and the new mix of Seraphim Sepia in your experience? My old pot of Seraphim Sepia is running out and I'm dreading getting a new one.

I dont think you need to be too concerned. Sepia is still very different to reikland fleshshade.
My advice would be if you can get to a Warhammer store, then ask for a painting demo.
All stores have sample pots so you'll be able to compare the two colours. Even take your current pot with you so you can do a direct comparison to that too.

Any tip on how to use retributor armor through and airbrush? How do you thin it? I've never managed to get it right.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  7 месяцев назад

Not so much a tip but I guess it’s just advice. I find when airbrushing metallics the first pass will be mostly just the metal flecks and very little colour / tone. It’s only with subsequent passes (coats) the colour of the paint actually starts to build up.
So, what I’m saying is don’t panic when the first coat looks like garbage. It’s fine, just go with it.
In terms of thinning, I use medium rather than water and that lets me thin it to be fluid enough without it separating and no longer bonding together.
      Hope that helps
      Actually I’ve just thought
I have a video which has airbrushing metallic in it, it’s a silver but I think it’ll show you what I mean

I have two big problems when painting with metallics:
    1) The paint dries so quickly, I barely have it thinned and it’s start to gob up the brush, making it unusable.
    2) Metallics are apparently very bad for brushes - the flecks cause hairs to stick and are almost impossible to remove from the ferrule once in there. Not keen to use my sables with metallics.

    • @BrushstrokePaintingGuides
      @BrushstrokePaintingGuides  7 месяцев назад +1

      OK, I totally get it.
      My response would be
      1) use a wet palette for sure. It will solve this issue straightaway for you.
Lots of people say you can’t use metallics on a wet palette but that’s just not true. They must be using the wrong paper.
Here’s a link to details on wet palettes
      ruclips.net/video/NLcuicvJFKo/видео.html
      2) yes, it’s true metallics will be harder on the bristles of a brush cos of the metal flecks. But this needed be a problem if you regularly refresh and rinse your brush during use.
I use my sable brushes with metallics all the time and they’ve still lasted years
Here’s a vid on how I maintain my brushes as I use them, which will explain it more
      ruclips.net/video/chBHaXh8iko/видео.html
      Hope that helps 👍
