  • Toyota makes some darn fuel efficient vehicles, and the fact you can get this 7 passenger Grand Highlander crossover that makes 360 horsepower and still gets 26 mpg on the highway is pretty great.

    We bought a GH Platinum Hybrid Max in Sepember of 2023. It now has 7650 miles on it. Over the weekend I drove from South Lake Tahoe, CA to Albany, Oregon and back for a total 1135 miles - I set the odometer at 0 at the start of the trip and didnt clear the mpg between refueling. That trip went over several mountain passes, through rain and sleet, driving around town a bit. My speed was set at 67 miles an hour on the freeway.
    When I arrived back in SLT the mpg showed an overall average of 27.6 mpg. OUTSTANDING !
    Full-time AWD, 400lb of torque...oh what fun it is !!!!!! And...everyone stop worrying about that one cannot put more than 13-14 gallons when empty in the tank. Toyota purposefully left a greater margin of fuel in the tank so not to damage the Turbo.

    Thats pretty darn good for a 36Xhp and 400tq 5,000lbs vehicle!! I used to have a MDX Type S and mpg was HORRIBLE on that thing...like 16-18mpg.......couldn't even get 300 miles out of a tank would be filling up like 240-260 miles and PREMIUM too!! So if you want that extra power this is the way to go! I want something that will be a little fun, not a grandma mobile but can still haul the family and get decent mpg!

      26 mpg is impressive for a vehicle this big, heavy, and powerful. If you want a fast 3 row crossover that still delivers 25+ mpg, this is the only option.

    • @kaesol
      @kaesol 9 месяцев назад

      @@jakes5530 CX-90 Turbo S gets 28mpg on the highway, and I think real world numbers have been 29/30, but yeah that will be slightly worse in the city. And way less room in the 3rd row.

    • @jakes5530
      @jakes5530 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@kaesol combined and highway mpg numbers are totally different. Most non-hybrid 3 row crossovers get 16-18 mpg around town, there’s just no way around it. That typically drops the avg mpg drastically especially if you dont have a long highway commute.
      But, being able to have the power of the GH Hybrid Max as well as seeing your avg fuel economy be 25+ mpg all day every day would be a incredible.
      I will say that the CX90 PHEV is a tempting option, just about as quick as this, but smaller, and the tech, while updated, is still not as good as the competition. Also dealing with a plug-in vehicle would be kind of annoying if you dont have an attached garage with a 240v outlet.

    • @kaesol
      @kaesol 9 месяцев назад

      @@jakes5530 To clarify, I'm talking about the 340hp inline 6 version of the CX-90, not the PHEV. It gets 25mpg with only a mild hybrid system. I think this might be more impressive engineering than the Grand Highlander considering it actually gets its estimated fuel economy, whereas the GH is getting lower. Car and Driver observed 23mpg overall in both the GH and CX-90, and it looks like Charlie got 21.2 in the GH, as shown at 7:58. But both vehicles are definitely impressive! And then there's the X7 m40i which probably beats both in terms of the power to efficiency ratio.

      @@kaesol gotcha. Yeah I’m a big bmw guy too, but totally different price range. My parents actually both have Bimmers with that 3.0 i6 (540i and X5 40i) and both routinely get 32 mpg on the freeway... premium fuel though… guess it’s a trade off. Very fun cars to drive nonetheless.

    Thanks for your video. We have a 2020 Highlander Hybrid model LE AWD. We have been averaging about 38 MPG in summer and at moderate speeds (25-55 MPH) over 40 MPG. Gas here in N/W Oregon is approaching $5 a gallon and I would not trade our hybrid for the other hybrid that gets 10 or more MPG less. I would have been more pleased if Toyota had released a 2023 Highlander Prime plug in hybrid which would be a bigger brother next to the RAV 4 Prime. That would have been a smart move for Toyota as we also have a 2022 RAV 4 Prime SE which is a fabulous SUV with over 45 MPG on gas with a depleted battery in pure hybrid mode and 40-50 miles of pure electric range.

    Seems pretty low compared to the V6, it does have greater output, but i'm thinking V6+hybrid would've even been better and averaged over 30. i never got hardly below 27 even at 90mph, at low 70s the V6 2022 limited got 29+ with mixed mountain highways and flat highway over several hundred miles.

    Modern Toyotas have a 4-5 gallon “reserve” and auto shut off if you go too far past the “Distance To Empty”. You will never get the “17 gallons” of usable capacity in the G-Highlander.
    Toyota should be class-actioned for this.

    • @waltereichnerlynch2574
