You're absolutely part of the solution with the skilled trades gap. There is going to be such a loss of knowledge from the prior generation but you're doing your part with the knowledge transfer. Screw HGTV. You're showing the real stuff and how to actually solve the problems that pop up. Entertaining as well.

I am old. "Back in the day" guys like this we're on HGTV, it wasnt all decorating BS. Bob Vila was one. He's old now too.
You hit da spot 🎯 GRAZIE.
@@cindybarber8449🛑🛑🛑🛑 PLEASE 🥺 WITH THE OLD 💀 HATING BUT OOH WELL 🆕 OVER THROW THE OLD 💀 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am a 30 year carpenter and thought I’d brush up on pocket doors. Your explanations were perfect and I even learned some stuff I can do better ie removing electrical staples and shim progression/ nailing. I am def investing in a cordless grinder now too. New subscriber who is going to explore the rest of your content. Thanks!!
This is hands down one of the greatest videos I've ever watched. Please, please, please keep doing what you're doing. You're helping to educate our generation, in turn empowering us to do things the RIGHT WAY, ON OUR OWN. Thank you!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed our content!
4x6 header in a non-load bearing wall? Curious for the reasoning for that? I've only ever installed Johnson Hardware pocket doors and the weight of the door is carried between the jack studs, so the header can be basic (unless it's load bearing). I'm assuming you're wanting this header to be ridged and carry the load of the door and frame?
I also noted this in your other wall framing video, but why do you add a large header on a non-load bearing wall?
Great question and thought - for pocket doors, it is generally standard practice to install a header to help support (4x6 in each case) the opening. While it would probably be fine to install a 2x4 or even 4x4, we always try and install 4x6 on all our pocket doors that are not load bearing. Hope that helps! Thank you for your interest and inquiries!
After your video I may have the courage to do a pocket door myself. Wish you had added some of the finish work (electrical, wallboard, etc) you had to do. Thanks for you effort.
It's actually pretty easy. This job was a bit more difficult because of all the wiring and the soffit. It's just like framing for a door or a window. It's the same for a load-bearing wall, but you'd need to build a temporary support so the ceiling doesn't sink down. Make sure you use the same 16" on center, because you'll know the load can be carried. I just had to do that, and I needed to remove a 4x10 inch header, 10 foot long. That was fun pounding that out and having it land on the floor. I built two long studs at a 45 degree angle so that massive header slid down. Be careful.
damn damn damn! Nothing better than watching someone who is actually good at the job! You're some last OG GC's that actually know how to do the work! I hate working for the paper GC's that don't know anything about actually building anything. Since you're already using trim head screws on the jamb. You can get the trim head screws with the reverse thread by the head of the screw. I use them as shim screws. Super easy to micro adjust. I plumb the top and bottom & then straight edge the field like you. Then I'll back up with the shims.
Thank you for the kind words and support!
Thanks for demystifying pocket door installation. I've been wanting to do a pocket door project for a while now, I can do it with confidence. All other videos leave me wanting more info!
I did my first pocket door in my bathroom. When you opened the door, it took up so much space I knew I wanted to put a pocket door in.
Believe me, it's really worth it!
Great, truly awesome in explaining the step by step insulation, thanks for being patient and not skipping any steps that a lot of carpenters do,. Awesome job again.
Thanks for the great video! I installed my first pocket door and it works perfectly thanks to your knowledge and my ability to follow clear directions (lol!!!). Your detailed instructions also translate to other projects! You rock Grant! Huge thanks!
Outstanding!
This is a very effective instructional video showing how the process actually occurred as opposed to someone just walking you through the steps in a theoretical situation. You will inevitably run into the many problems, like he did with wiring and nails sticking out and things not being plumb.
Which typcally won't be on a theoretical checklist.
Really adds to the value.
I was finding this a daunting task to start. It IS cumbersome with lots of little details.
But this type of video gives me the confidence that I can do it.
The tricks on one-person install were also extremely helpful.
Thanks very much!!
Great video Grant. Covered every step of the process in super detail. I am ready to install my three pocket doors! Thanks.
Glad you found it helpful!
Really good video, and timely. I need to add pocket doors in my unfinished basement. In one area, however because of the I-beam support, the overhead height is lower. How do I shorten the height of the pocket door assembly? Thanks for all the great instructions!!!
This is no contest, the best pocket door install video on the web. Thank you!
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful
Easiest way to take out electric staples is jamming a flathead screw driver behind wire and wriggle it up or levering it on the stud.
Very enjoyable and informative presentation. Thanks for taking us through and explaining every step.
I'll be installing two in the next couple weeks and nothing has prepared me better than your walkthrough. Well done and thank you
Awesome! Good luck
Ditto!
I love the detail. Very educational. Pocket doors are never used enough in tight spaces.
Agreed!!!!!!!!! Think about how much space we can all save & better utilize if we get comfortable installing pocket doors.
never install the jamb piece before the door goes in. always install the door so when it closes against the jamb you can shim properly and you wont have any surprises
Extremely informative! This is how these videos should be made.
Awesome video. Only wished you would have included a link for that pocket door. Can you add a lock to a pocket door?
I have almost the same issue. I have electronical on bothsides of wall were the pocket is locaded. Can electronical be on pocket side if protected or will it all have to be moved to the door side? (I have on both right and left of the dooer face and on the back side on the left side).
Thank you so much! Best video ever on pocket doors. All the details and warnings on how not to make mistakes. Super helpful!!!
Glad you found it helpful!!!
The pocket door frame kit I picked up from Home Depot was supposed to have everything I need (according to reviewers) but didn't come with the 3/4" door jamb piece. I guess I'll need to pick one of those up before installing?
If you already had a door in the opening just use one of the jams from that door. Or buy a new jam.
Best video I’ve seen so far on pocket doors!!!! Thank you for doing such a great job!
Solid content man, thank you. Very in depth. Keep on making videos!
What do you use at the bottom of the door to keep it from going left and right that's the only thing I didn't see that you do
The Ryan Renalds of Renovations
😂🙏🏼😊
Im half way through the video and learned soooooooo much. this is the type of teaching that's needed.
What an awesome video! I was very impressed with your concise and relatable presentation. I landed on your video while searching for a tutorial on how to replace an existing pocket door with basic framing for a wall. I thought your video would show what I could expect to find in my wall cavity once I cut out the drywall. I haven't found a video match for my project yet, but I couldn't help continuing to watch this video because I was so captivated by the quality. Excellent work here. This video of your project is great. If you have tips on removing a pocket door and framing the space to make a wall, I'll take those. Thank you!
awesome step by step video...... much appreciated for the DIY community!!!
Good so far, but what about installing a pocket door in a weight-bearing wall? How do you solve the issue of headers?
Temporarily support the load (build a fake wall on one or both sides) then exactly the same process.
Excellent video man. Very thorough. U can work for me anytime!
I appreciate that!
Just from this video you guys should have 1mil subs💪🏾🙏🏾
Nice work man! What do u fill the nail and screw holes in the finished jamb with?
Noice!!!!!! Is there a part 2 to this showing electrical relocates etc? Well done!!!🇨🇦
Awesome demonstration!!! Avid DIYer who has done 3 pocket doors on a concrete slab and the challenge is the know-how to adapt them to the site. Only thing I would have liked to see is how the electrical box on the pocket-side was re-installed. I'm planning on doing double pocket doors in an interior wall into a kitchen and one pocket side must have switches for 2 lighting circuits. 2x4 walls and am doing my research for a clean & safe way to run the cables.
Do you have a preference for hardware that keeps the pocket door quiet and sturdy?
What is a ballpark estimate you would charge to install a pocket door?
Quick comment, you should also mention checking for plumb on the reveal side of the jambs. Thanx for the great tutorial!!!
Looks so crappy. And unfinished. I suggest you show the finished door at the end of video, With drywall and electrical complete.
Well that's one way to do it. I have been framing for 30 years and I have never put a pocket door frame in that way. I'm not saying he's all wrong, and if it works for you great, but there are easier ways of doing the frame.
This vodeo was brilliant. You're a credit to your trade. We need more people like you to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. You have a positive energy like you really enjoy your work. New subscriber.
Stumbled on this channel, great content. Subbed!
Yes, this has been on my list of things to do..and wow, you are really informative. I couldn't make out the name on your nailer. I need a portable one of those too! Mind telling us here?
Thank you this is an excellent video, I've never done anything like this, you made it so easy and detailed to understand!!❤️
Only thing I do different is I use laser to set jam(vertical) and top header level ... not a level. Since I bought the laser my level is not used very often
yeah, can't do that to electrical in Chicago, we have conduit !!!
😬😬😬⚡️🤯
Great job. I have had a pocket door for about a year now. I have watched a few videos of installing the units. All of them showed an assembled pocket door being installed. I am not a carpenter. I have been trying to level my pocket door. You showed how to assemble the door. that made a big difference. I turned my door the right way up and assembled it. Now I have to decide my exact placement. Tanks for a fantastic instructional video.
Amazing job, amazing explanation, perfect demonstration, very well done
Great video….clear, concise and practical information!
Really enjoyed it and am more than confident to attack my pocket door install!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the content and found value in it!!!
Loved your video. I learned a valuable lesson. I will be hiring someone to install mine😅
@grantmaury builds This was very helpful! Can you share which brand pocket door kit you used?
I am a finish carpenter & I think your greatest statement is : Anyone can do it? I actually do not do much of them cause I more or less do tons of cabinets and built ins ! And anyone can do it!
Good video you are a very talented teacher ! Thk you my friend!
So I watched your video after demo...I removed the cripples and nails are hanging down. What can I do to fix my mistake?
I feel very confident I can put in a pocket door now because of this video. Thanks!
Good stuff! Excellent instruction,
Glad it was helpful!
Love this guy super smart this helped a lot
Great stuff. The notch/hammer method for getting wire out of studs is new for me, love it!
A great video appreciate it. How did you solve the electrical problem that you just created? Specifically, you had wires, outlets and switches that needed to be moved. Where did you put them now that the pocket door is in the way? Anyway to get a follow up on that?
What brand pocket doors did you use? Where did you purchase them? Did the door come with the package? Was it a solid door or hollow? Very well explained on the installation. Great video!
where'd you get your door kit from?
This is the one I needed, thanks unc. You done good!
OUTSTANDING video, and perfect timing as I’m about to replace an old pocket door. Many thanks - you prevented two mistakes I would have made. Just stellar!
Glad it helped!!!
Why do you use wood framed pocket door frame vs higher quality, more easily serviceable cavity slider or Eclisse?
I have subscribed. you are an excellent teacher!
Any tip son how to build a wall that has a double sided electric fireplace? please make a video for that!!!!!
Great video! Very thorough! Thanks Grant!
Thanks Deadpool
🤣🤣🤣
Refreashingly excellent. Thank you.
Wow amazing level of detail. What a great video. Thank you!
excelente video solamente que me gustaria que estuviera en español veo que explicas bien pero esta en ingles. Videos como este no se encuentran en youtube
I’m about to install one of these in my small home’s new construction bathroom! This video makes me feel really confident that I can do this! Wish you showed installing the last piece that goes at the bottom of the door frame, to keep it squarely in the frame! Thanks for posting, brother!
You can do it!
Best "How-to" video ever. Could you tell us the product you're using in the video?
can we install a custom wood door instead of any standard door or does the system only take certain doors?
loved the video! thank you!
This Old House call them jack studs instead of “trimmer”
Good video. In general….and possibly overkill, I like to use glue on my shims.
Thank you!

Thanks for Sherring

Nice work. Do you have a video on installing a pocket door on a load-bearing wall?
Outstanding! Always something to learn from your videos.
Awesome! Glad you find our content valuable!
What did you do to the shims sticking out!! Did you just trim those off??!!
Great info! Thanks!
Great explanation however these videos become way more interesting if you or I as professional contractors discuss total costs for this project. And not just specifically for this job but also the difference in pricing between private residential customer install as a remodel and pricing as a GC and/or pricing as a subcontractor. Just some food for thought.
Thanks for the solid feedback. We will definitely consider this and implement in future projects!
@@grantmaurybuilds As always excellent job!!
'trimmers' are just jack studs, right? Never heard this term before.
Super clear and a real skill is refreshing
Next time let your viewers know that the door edge comes with a 3 degree angle that will need to be cut flat.
Awesome video thanks so much
great video....very well explained Thankyou
Glad you enjoyed the content!
Excellent explanation!
Awesome video! Thanks!!
Great video, man. Came out nice. Would like to see it all rocked and painted.
Very helpful! Thank you!
Nicely done!
Brilliant video, how long did it take to install the door from start to finish?
Thank you. It took us 2 days to fully install both the framing and the door itself.
@@grantmaurybuilds very useful to know, thanks a lot for sharing such detailed content!
Bad for my budget because I saw your nailer and now I have to buy one just like it...
Kidding, great video !
awesome content. Good refresher on pocket doors, demo to finish.
Mate! You've saved me. 😄 I've been waiting for some help from my son. I'm old and tired but your instructions are wonderful. The best info of all time was how to find the bottom of the door! I'm working step by step with you and it's all making sense. If this old girl can do it anyone can. You do need some basic skills but I'm feeling really confident now. Thank you! 😏👍💜
Great detail! Thanks!
Really appreciate your video. Took us through all the aspects in a well timed and organized manor. I liked the “experience hacks” too that reduced my personal learning curve and saved me rework.
