I know this is super late but as a drywaller I just wanted to tell you putting joint compound right onto wood (especially load bearing wood) is a surefire way to get cracks, as you know wood moves seasonally and while the wood can bend, joint compound is extremally rigid and brittle. If you do get cracks I suggest cutting a slightly bigger spot and screwing the backing wood 1/2" recessed for drywall and make sure to use fiber tape to help it resist movement.

Not so hard to believe. Every wood has it's own type of unique look and feel. For a person that enjoys perfection any disturbance is easily noticed. IMO, it would of been better with a clear epoxy to gently enhance the original blemish into the look of the wood. Far easier to explain and easier for the viewer to accept without the jarring geometric (not natural) patch. That said, only the wife and he will know about it and have likely already accepted it. For the occasional guest that is rude enough to point it out, don't invite them over again. Who needs that kind of uninvited stress in their life?

Absolutely love your work - When you get stuck with drywall patches a killer application that beats all the fillers on the market is just Westpac fast set 5 or 20 (20 is much more forgiving). Your techniques shown in video is perfect, just watch the mud and when it starts to gray out smooth over again with a wet knife. When it sets up if not already perfect it can be sanded with a Wet Sponge, no dust. It sands like balsa wood, lite and fluffy. Just make sure and prime it before paint so it doesn't flash.
There are numerous brands of hotmud, but this one is the easiest to work with.

That intro gave me a flashback to my childhood. My father was a carpenter and I remember coming home form school and there was no kitchen because he decided it was time to remodel it. A few years later, the same thing happened but there was no roof on the house and one of his employees was sticking out of where there used to be a roof. My mother also doesn't like surprises.

What a gorgeous door and from someone who’s had to do way more mudding than I ever planned on, excellent job with the drywall! Your new door is a work of art, with a graceful balancing of the wood grain on the various pieces. Like you, I’m happier with barn doors in barns and appreciate seeing how others install more elegant door systems. I work with basic tools so it’s fun to see the commercial equipment. Your butterfly inset to mitigate the end split is ingenious, thanks. That’s part of why I watch complex building projects, there’s always something that’s helpful for my basic woodworking and I enjoy improvising with what I have. I find it very true too… planting ideas to germinate in the mind of others can smooth things out a lot. Anxiety can be a tough one, the inner insecurity drives some to feeling a need for perfection. That was a skillful non-engagement response on your part. Thanks again for sharing your skills in showcasing living wood.
