Not really, according to the comment I'm not even watching the video. As a former construction worker, current manufacturing engineer, workers' safety is my top priority and clearly this channel doesn't align with my values.
As someone who has run teams from five or six to over a hundred people in the past, I agree with the comments that you need to apologise to Sam, and not just for the bit about stopping the slab, when your immediate reaction should have been "Are you OK? I'm glad you didn't do anything stupid like trying to catch it". In fact, you should have planned for something like this and told your guys quite clearly "if it starts to go, just get the hell out of the way". You should also avoid throwing tantrums like that in front of your staff. Obviously what happened was heartbreaking, but as the leader you suck it up, make sure everyone else is OK, then throw a fit in private, not in front of your team. I appreciate it might be good content, but it's not good for you as a leader or for your team. A good manager always puts the welfare and wellbeing of their team first, especially in a potentially dangerous environment like a workshop and, quite honestly, Sam already looks like he's scared witless of you. I'm a big guy too, and we sometimes don't realise how imposing a large, confident man can be to those around them, and while you are probably just joking, it really doesn't look to me like Sam finds it funny. When you make people nervous and jumpy, that's when accidents happen, which is exactly what happened here. You constantly badgering your team to hurry up and mocking them for being slow lead to mistakes being made with the result seen in the video. You're former NFL, I'm former army, we spent a lot of time in environments where such "banter" is seen as normal and you give as well as you get, but a lot of "normal" people don't see it the same way and you really might want to consider that. It's entirely possible Sam's totally OK with it, but that is not the perception that your videos put across, and as a wise man once said, "it's not what you do that's important, but what you're seen to be doing" and, frankly, you're coming over as a bit of a bully. People don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers.
as someone who has full on walked out on a bad manager - I concur (I'm not yet at that part in the video but seemingly from the comments I can piece together what's 'going' to happen) - being treated every single day I worked at that job like I was the shit on the sole of his shoe wore me down like nothing else. He was a disgusting person (not just as a manager but as a person) and expected everyone else to clean up after him - I was NOT hired as a cleaner, I was hired to digitise all of his accounts (he was an accountant), which I did as a casual worker but when he started taking the p*ss by getting me to clean up his *literal* shit in the toilet, his *literal* condoms he left on the office floor and the fact that he would routinely call me every derogatory name under the sun on a daily (hell, hourly) basis - I told him to stuff his job and find someone else to do it because I was done and walked out. Now I get that's not quite what happened here (at least, from your comment) but I agree that people don't quit shitty jobs, they quit shitty people (who happen to be managers) and I've noticed this trend in JM's persona for the last .. few months videos, it doesn't really come as a surprise to see people - essentially - having had enough of it on another's behalf. "Dramatic content" shouldn't over ride the need for human decency. Regardless of your individual background where "banter" may or may not be "normal". edit: I got to the part where it happens and it full on gave me anxiety, I'd have walked out (as Sam) and pondered my career choices. He said "I'm scared", I said "I'm terrified" and I wasn't even there (not to mention, we only saw the EDITED version, which I think scares me more because what else went on that we _didn't_ see?)
Good job Sam for not getting hurt. I worked 10 years building houses with a boss like that. I quit a few times but he was my brother. You're young and seem like a good worker I'm sure you'll find your own place in the world soon enough.
F** it, Im going for broke and taking out a tooth with me. Workmen's comp should be abolished. Turned us all into a bunch of p****s. If it was me that worked multiple days on it, I would have jump in the way, if I got hurt, let the VA pay my ex-special operator azz medical bills.
@@JamesB-j6kso you cry about workman's comp being a thing while getting basically the most important benefits of workman's comp through the VA? tell us your a hypocrite without telling us your a hypocrite.
My grandad passed in 1985 sadly and a few years earlier he gave me some advice that's lived with me ever since. He said, "if you drop something let it drop, you can do more harm by trying to stop it!" Wise words from a wise man. I'm sorry John but the health and wellbeing of your employees is paramount over anything else!!
I always say "a dropped knife has no handle" Clearly that slab was heavy, and could have damaged anyone under it or trying to grab it. Plus now the project will be 2 episodes instead of one! :D
The slab fell apart? No biggie. I tell You what i would do in this situation. I would hand you my two weeks notice and take my ass out of this toxic environment. Once you've worked under such a person you easily recognise the signs. Like the panic mode everyone's in all the time. Like working without any plan because everyone avoids saying anything because the boss knows best and loudest. Like avoiding being in the room when you suspect something is going to go south.. instead of trying to prevent something going south. Yeah... this workshop is one stresful place to be. I just hope they earn enough to substantiate this. And kudos for the video editor. Quite a feat cutting out all the spicy bits and still showing anything being done.
I know very well that post-fuck-up silence. When nobody wants to say anything because the person in charge doesn't want to be mean, and the people working for them don't want to get yelled at, so everyone is just really really fucking quiet.
So, for those who are watching the video now and don't know why people are saying John should apologize to Sam: After the slab falls, by the end of the video, John says "didn't you even think of catching it" to Sam. The he throws a fit and doesn't say a word for two hours apparently. He cut off the part he said that after he got huge backlash in the comments.
@@paula5540 because editing it out isnt the problem lol. Toxicity towards your employees and sugesting someone should throw themselves in front of a 300lb piece of wood is the problem. it's not that hard. whats not to get?
I was watching the video right now and at first quarter of it i was like "why the f is this main dude being so abusive towards his workers? Why is he such a douche?" and it kept getting worse and worse with his comments. Not to mention how bad he planned everything and then condescendingly gave out comments to hurry and stuff. He obviously didnt have a plan so his workers couldnt even hurry to do something that hasnt been planned for. Then i see these comments like yours mentioning there was even more abuse edited out. WOW this main guy is definitely an abuser and you can tell both of his workers dislike him.
As the owner and boss of my company , I've learned a very important lesson watching this video , then reading everyone's comments. I have got to be a lot more careful with my attitude and planning. I typically do not care about falling objects versus employee health . Let it fall , I have insurance for that . But boy can I get worked up when my team is in a tight spot and we are in the super crunch type situation . I have got to be far more patient and develop my mentor attitude alot more . So to everyone who posted concerning that one situation , thank you. I'll take some lessons from it for my behavior , perspectives , and how and when I say things.
I agree, it's easy to see the faults in others but it's not easy to see your own. When I was in training to take over an auto parts store when I was 20, I came in with the store manager at 8, first thing he said was that the rug was dirty and the pop cooler was low. The kid who opened at 7 mentioned that he was the one that closed last night alone, on a truck day when we're supposed to have 4, and that he stayed late enough to get the brake rotor pallet put away, and left right after because he had to be back to open... Manager and him had a back and forth where the kid finally said "You always point out the shit we miss, but you never notice that the customers love us and we break our backs because you can't schedule enough staff" kid ended up walking out. I took over the following week and made sure I got him back, made it very clear that if they get busy that they can call someone else to come and help or to call me and I'll come in. That kid took over when I left and last I heard he was taking classes to become a District Manager.
Or, take people on the internet for what they are and don't give a singular shit about their faulty uninformed opinions? The dynamic they have "on screen" and off could be completely different. What they choose to edit and show us does not show the WHOLE PICTURE. So take everything with a grain of salt and don't give in to the cancel warriors.
@@GOLD_FEVER brother this has nothing to do with cancel culture. The fact that you're even saying this tells me you've never been in a managerial position or worked at a company large enough where HR gets involved in shit. First of all, this was his idea and he has no real pre-planning for the actual project let alone safety. For him to then yell at them during the stressful situations like clamping was asinine. He even messed up when he tried to take over for clamping. Set aside whether he had the right to get pissed, he's risking his own business with the way he operated. Had one of his workers gotten hurt and wanted to sue its an open and shut case with them recording everything. They regularly violate a metric ton of OSHA regulations but for the most part the injury likely to occur is minor so noone really cares. This one was actual a wtf ridiculous moment.
@@godyamit I don't like Rule nazis and hard asses in general. That said, i don't like people who assume either. I am starting to think that everybody here reacted to a different video. Because i can't find a single part of this video where anybody is getting mad at anybody. Let alone taking it out on anybody.
John, Im seeing the edited video but from the comments I gather you gave Sam hell for not thinking to catch the table. He definitely thought to catch it as you see his hand go out to grab it but smartly realized there was nothing he could actually do. You however are the one who dropped the table. The first time it was clamped up, the table was a bit higher and you stayed up there. This time, the table was lower and the split second you put your weight on the table is when the clamp shot out. You need to address Sam's good decision to let the table fall, safety first. As you said, you have 2 slabs. You only have 1 Sam.
I honestly don't think it's even worth salvaging. I don't like the design. It fell apart because it's bad design. He blamed his employees for it breaking rather than for the construction method being [insert preferred 4-letter word]. The cuts made it weak. I doubt the table could have supported much weight once finished. This was inevitable, and the guy suggested as much throughout the video.
@@jspsand7085 Yeah, the advised amount of steaming time was ignored, maybe filling the holes with glue all the way would have worked better than just putting it on the outside of the cuts.
@@Carpenter__ I don't see them as incompetent at all. I see poor planning by the guy in charge and him getting angry at his subordinates for not fixing everything while the screwups were underway. If someone gets called across the shop to give a hand to a process that's already underway that's bad planning. Not having the clamps and jigs ready is bad planning. Yelling at someone to throw something on the ground and hurry up shows that he didn't go over everything first. He's a fully grown toddler with some hand skills trying to yell at a team to hurry up until they magically read his mind and then figure out what is required (because what he wants is almost certainly not how physics actually works)
Sam was right to step aside. Trying to catch that falling slab could have seriously hurt him. The man lived after falling from a ladder, whilst saving your wedding photos. Give him props. Anyhow, I would suggest using a steel frame on the front side of the desk to help hold it in place. You could add a Malecki logo to the steel also. On the back side, I would consider another steel brace that also incorporates a couple of drawers for the desk. Stay safe, fam.
EDIT: The video has been edited to cutout all the parts where John digs into Sam and edits removed dunking on him. I'm glad the changes were made. I wish it was acknowledged in some way, but I'm glad. Thanks to the team 👍 Sam getting dunked on the whole video sucks. Especially digging into him for not catching a 300lb slab getting married to gravity. Damn.
@@KB3AOL When you say it 2 hours later after you've cooled down, it's facetious. When you say it immediately in the heat of the moment it's mean spirited. I don't doubt they're friends and they're probably fine....but I would have liked to have seen resolution in the video showing as much. Sam's face afterward sure looked like he was feeling like John was pissed at him.
Say hey big dog, I'm a machinist for the second largest countertop shop in the Kansas City Metro area, but even still it's a small business. When shit happens at our snap business, the first thing the Managers check on is the employees, not the slabs or the machines, they make sure their people are okay. That's what keeps employees. Not giving a fuck about your employees mental or physical health while even playfully scolding them about things they can't fix, is a pretty sure way to find another camera man and another shop helper. Nobody wants to get bitched at for being human at work, John.
this.. watching this video stressed me out so much, and that was after they cut out the apparently bad part. I dont think im going to be watching any more videos from this dude.
Apologise to Sam, as you said "shit happens". And he's a tiny dude, might have been seriously injured if he would have attempted to get in the way of that huge piece of wood. GOOD thing he didn't try something stupid and get underneath that slab.
I am the only one, who is pretty sure, John said it as a joke. That he really didnt mean it? Thats why he left it in final cut? Because he thought that people will get it?
John used to play in the nfl, he's used to poeple running into 300lbs not running away, big dudes always poke fun at us skinny guys but he didnt actually expect him to stop it, he would've been paying sam workers comp right now 😂
Glad to see the respect for workplace safety in the comments, big agree on what most everyone is saying. Heat of the moment stuff gets said, do hope for a proper apology. I'd assume that's already been done. But an onscreen recap and correction goes a long way for a community not in the loop of everything real time. Regarding the fix to the project, I like the resin option.
I said this in another comment but if they really did stand there for 2 hours saying nothing, it sounded like a bit of shell shock for them. Even though he yelled about catching it, I think he actually ended more more relieved that he could yell at him after the fact then to have Sam laying underneath the thing. While that sounds messed up, its something I have heard from the older generation, that they may be yelling at you, but they are yelling cause they are relieved you aren't hurt.
Was nervous the comments weren’t going to call put John’s behaviour being pretty damn terrible this video. Glad to see everyone coming to Sam’s defense!! We love you Sam!!!!
I agree the whole video he's was passing passive aggressive comments to them. When Chris was like well idk what to do and John said we'll i do. Or telling oh no don't go any faster sarcastically these projects are stuff they see on your tube and try to recreate it I wish I Saw the whole version
I like that no one cares about how to fix the table and are just shitting on John’s behavior, he deserves it in this video. Lighten up dude. Put together a better plan before just stressing out your guys.

Agreed - I have a shop and although I like the projects in his videos I find his planning painful and employee treatment painful to watch. These are related - one trickles down from the other. Part of being good in a shop is not just getting better with your hands and probem solving but all your boss skills including how you organize, interact with employees think about safety while doing so. After all the videos and projects that have been made John seems to have no concept of this until all the viewers have to point it out to him
@@carpenter1138 The other issue I noticed when they bend the first leg is he's trying to do it and doesn't have any ability to direct anyone else since both his hands are in use and he's busy. would have been loads better if he instructed someone else to do that so he could supervise and direct. or again explain beforehand and give everyone tasks and explain what would be required of them.
2 little clamps on a metal bar stuck in there sideways that was always going to let go. That's on John 100%. You can also see Sam wasn't really looking at it when it started to fall. He was also holding that track. Good job Sam. Fuck that slab. Don't be a dink John. The kid signed up to work in a woodshop and he's jumping off ladders and dodging huge slabs.
Boy. Johns's “True Colors” really came out in this video. Didn't they? I understand things getting a little more tense while doing large projects like this one. Honestly, most people do. What most don't do is bag on their Employees while also being passively aggressive. That's a good way to lose Great employees.
Or lead, or execute tasks, ir do damn near anything other than lift sh*t. John does not belong in a shop- and especially doesn't belong in a shop as the boss. He should stick with tinkering in his garage, alone.
I am an example of what happens when the person "catches it." (and this was thought out in advance by the boss but poorly)Two of use were taking directions from my boss (coincidentally named Jon) at the time at a popular children's museum in CA. I was new at the time so I didn't know much about the boss and trusted him. We were unloading an exhibit from a concrete loading dock and he said he would tip it over and the two of us could catch it because it was "light". The two of us could not tell either way by looking at it. When the Boss tipped it over it was so heavy that it slipped through the hands of the other guy across from me who was in his 60's. I was younger and stronger and managed to get ahold of it. Long story short It jerked me down to the floor and jammed 3 of my vertibrae together grinding part of them away and pinching nerves in the process. It turned out the exhibit weighed almost 450 lbs because they had put lead bricks(yes they exist) inside to weight it at the bottom. IN this case he blamed me for deciding to catch it when it slipped through the other guys hands. Over the next 2 months I lost the feeling in 2 of my fingers in my dominant hand, had severe neck pain and it heavily effected everything from my work to how I slept at night. Yes there was physical therapy and medical covered by the jobs but I will have pain for the rest of my life and there are chunks missing from 2 vertibrae and permanent nerve damage. Even as I type this one of my fingertips can't feel it when it hits the keys. 6 mos later I was fired for failing to meet work performance reviews. I went back to working for myself and have been happier ever since. When someone else is in charge of your safety they need understand what this means. Don't be a John or a Jon.
This is testimony as to why I felt it was paramount to get out of the construction biz, luckily while I was still young enough to escape unharmed and in relatively good health. I can't tell you how many near death experiences I had in the 10 years or so that I worked in the trades, usually because the boss man was pushing for end results, without being a good communicator, and often not having enough experience in unique situations. I once hung from gabled facia boards about 25 feet up, with nothing but adrenaline strength keeping my hands gripped to the underside of the boards, as the scaffold beneath me teetered then crashed to the ground. Imagine a crab dangling from the peak of the roof, that was me for about 5 seconds until everything settled and I dropped down onto a board that had gotten caught in the first story window that was leaning at a 45 degree angle about 8 feet below me. I somehow managed to land on that board perfectly, without breaking my ankles or neck.. Combine these types of instances with the fact that during my 10 years, I don't recall even one employer offering me health insurance, or workman's comp etc. although I did sign a few waivers stating that I was solely responsible for my own body and any injuries that I may incur while working on someone's property. At least you were fortunate enough to have decent healthcare coverage. I hope you may still be able to continue to recover from your lifelong injuries, and thank you for sharing your story.
I have seen and been around... no job is as important as the rest of your life.... be your own boss... if you work for others be ready to find new others if need be
My mom was in a car accident 15 years ago. She has been in chronic pain ever since. Recently she was given an epidural nerve block injection. She still has pain, but the injection has helped significantly. She called me the other day in happy tears because she can finally sleep through the night without the pain keeping her up. I write this, in case the injection could possibly help you and your pain.
Editing the video to remove the abusive comments towards Sam (as well as when John basically asked Sam to kill himself, in what was the worse shop safety I've ever seen) without an apology comes across as an attempt to hide it. This way there is no evidence of the abuse and John can easily brush it under the rug instead of actually doing better. This is what serial abusers do. You can bet the Sam is still getting yelled at and dunked on, you just won't see it now. The reactions from John aren't jokes, that's pretty clear. You don't edit out a bunch of "jokes" like this. When someone gets called out and they hide what they are being called out over, it's not progress. You can't be a better woodworker John unless you fix your mistakes, instead of just hiding them all the time. The biggest mistake you made in this project was having no fucking plan. You clearly had not sat down with the team to go through the steps of the slab. That's what the guys in the video you watched do, not just scream at people when they can't read your mind. 90 percent of running a good shop is planning. You're not running a good shop.
Came here to pretty much say this. Being the boss and being unprepared. Then yelling at your guys because you didn't make a plan and things went sideways. That makes you a bad boss.
@@JustMe-fl1db I'm not rewatching the whole thing (I just rewatched the part where it fell) so I can't comment on the other stuff they edited out - but for the table falling off part; John SCREAMED at Sam asking why the F he didn't catch it, screamed F a bunch of times before storming off screen, came back "later" with the caption of "no one spoke for 2 hours" Sam saying "I'm scared" in a very small, scared voice. Chris looking freaked out, Sam looking freaked out, John acting like everyone else was the problem except for him. In this edit; there's none of the tension beyond the actual crack/break. In fact, the entire thing was so bad (the original version) it triggered my PTSD - I had a chronically abusive ex 12 years ago and this basically brought it all rushing back to the surface. The attitude John had with sam (and chris tbf), the screaming, the acting like everyone else is at fault (even when it _conceivably_ could be considered "bad luck" rather than shitty planning). It really makes me question the type of "boss" he is and how "locked in" his employees are.
Stitch it! Also, you owe Sam a public apology. Ain't no way he could catch that ,he's a tiny dude, might have been seriously injured if he would have attempted to get in the way of that huge piece
John, I love your videos and you make some amazing works of art. That said, this entire video was a demonstration on how not to treat people/employees. From telling them to hurry in clamping something, bitching about the blade width, to getting on Sam for not diving in front of the falling slab......all around fail my man. Never had the pleasure of meeting you and based on your other videos, you seem to have a big heart, but on this project, not the case!
It's not dropping on him though it's falling/rolling towards him I'm pretty sure he could have easily held it up.but when you hear the noise and see it move instinct kicks in.
@@aaroncraven07 more like... he was told to stand underneath it while holding a track saw/ seems like his other option was to throw the track saw which it seems (based on the attitudes here) would have put him in hot water too. poor leadership and planning all around. using squeeze clamps and only two? they had plenty of time to clamp properly while setting this up and should have had a protocol for if it went down such as staying out of the way or having someone holding it at all times when it was vertical
bro wtf, John gets mad at Sam (who is holding the track saw that he was asked to grab) instead of planning out the cut like a professional. Typical manager tantrum. Why do I continue watching these videos?
All I could imagine when John mentions the one guy disappearing when things get “fun”. No he dipped because he saw his boss doing dangerous nonsense and removed himself from the vicinity to not be part of it.
I build expensive custom displays for stores. I tell all my guys, if something is falling, get out of the way. We can build a new display but it's hard to build a new you.
It's a bunch of dudes in a shop. It's all good. No doubt, at the end of the day, he knows dodging was the right move. In the moment however, it's like "WTF man!? All ya had do do was jump on the grenade!" This is just how blue collar men communicate.
Pour it. Also, you owe Sam a public apology. Ain't no way he could catch that while holding a track. Don't make him feel like shit for protecting himself. Sheesh.
It seems like snippets all throughout the video have been cut out too. John was pretty much on one in this video and 90% of the backhanded comments have been taken out. Basically makes everything look MUCH worse.
I watched it after the video, and the whole video just feels off. John has always been kind of a douche, but here it just feels like his abusing his position. They're not his friends, they're his employees.
Banter can only be called such when it's a two way street. When it's not a two way street, it's called abuse. this was not a two way street. Also, expecting Sam who's about 1/4 the size of John to "try to catch" that monstrous slab in order to "save it" is moronic. At best you've got an employee with broken bones. At worst, you're planning a funeral. Joking or not, that's not right. On any count. No one says "I'm scared" in that small of a voice unless they're honestly rattled and honestly scared. I was *terrified* and I wasn't even there. Not to mention the entire video triggered my PTSD and anxiety through the abuse John was hurling at his employees - as I've gone through abuse like that as an employee (in a different line of work) that still affects me now (clearly). No one deserves to be treated like that, spoken to like that, especially when the boss himself doesn't have a clue what he's doing and has no plan. Be a better human.
Yup. Everyone is talking about the table falling but John's behavior was pretty bad since they started bending. This makes me wonder how he treats him employees / friends off-camera.
Maybe once you’re done crying, you could actually try and do something difficult and put your hard earned money into it. You’ll realize it can be frustrating.. but you won’t do that, because you’re a girly boy
@@chadly19 Have. Did. Done. Didn't treat people like disposable objects or with disdain because I didn't know how to handle my emotions either. John needs to work on himself more than his projects.
So this version has been edited to remove the scene where John asks Sam why he didn't think to "catch it". Gotta say, seeing this behavior is disappointing to say the least. In Sam's defense, he did stick his arm/hand out but quickly realized he was in danger. I would have let it drop too. Sam's arm being broken (or possibly severed) would have cost way more than a $2K slab of wood. Good quick thinking "Sam".
So now it's here for posterity so anyone who reads this comment can imagine it's worse than it is. So now you edited out reality and what we have is false facts, fake news BS. Typical for the times. What we should have is a video with an apology. I wouldn't treat an employee like that, but I saw the original and I did not thok it was that bad in the moment. But an apology was called for. So no apology, BYE John. You're a good woodworker, just be that.
@@mikej5959 It was in the original video when in dropped last week. Read through the comments. He got tons of backlash for how he treated the guys after it broke. So they took those parts out.
I saw the original video as well. He is not lying John was a giant ass and got on Sam for not trying to stop the slab from falling. Lost a lot of respect for him seeing his true character come through. I’m betting the guy John hired as an editor received a lot of heat for putting the video out as it originally was.
Editing it out makes this even worse. I don’t even care how this plays out. Unsubscribed last week. Checked in because someone liked a comment. Now I see it’s edited out, but it still doesn’t change the shit show this build was, filmed or not, uploaded or not, edited or not. It happened. And that’s a problem.
Pour it ! Don't give Sam too hard of a time, it is a natural reaction to jump out of the way of something failing. Unless you are an idiot and just stand there and let it hit you.
Sam was holding a track for a Green Tool, which he saved. Not sure how he was supposed to put it down and keep the table up, only Squiddly Diddly could do it.
@@marquisethomas5611 Sam is probably about a buck 160 give or take. That table is definitely 300lbs. He would have been crushed plus he was holding a track.

The other Sam, Jordan... I'm sure the list goes on for people that are not filmed, Think he needs to do some self reflection to stop putting people down that clearly want to do the right thing.
He did the right thing jumping out of the way. It’s just a piece of wood, not worth getting injured over. I have seen and heard about similar accidents where a worker tried to stop something heavy from falling and in every case that person got hurt.
yeah, why is HE the "muscle" holding up the end when HE should be the one putting on the clamps and squares? Why didn't they take a long clamp or even a cable from one end to the other to apply the force? POOR planning for sure. And with a steam bend, if it doesn't work, then how do they get it back in the steam box? they should have let it sit in the box quite a bit longer if it felt too stiff. And once they found that the blade didn't have enough kerf, they should have gone in there with something, (even a sharp chisel!) to ease those inside kerfs. putting the glue in afterwards is not going to be great either
Exactly this. It was piss-poor planning and execution throughout. They seemed to just be winging it throughout and making things up as they went. They didn't even set up proper forms or anything to hold such a huge slab at 90 degrees, then wondered why it didn't work. It was a joke from start to finish.
100% I've literally walked out on guys that plan poorly then blame you for their F ups. the way they had that table clamped to cut it was a recipe for disaster
I’m sure John will be sure to consult the do nothing, keyboard warrior on the internet next time he tries something crazy/cool like this that he’s never done before. Clearly your years of experience being useless and complaining online have instilled you with infinite god tier levels of wisdom and know how.
@@oh-totorothat tends to be how things go when your trying something totally knew and don’t really know what you’re doing.. easy to say it’s all wrong from the comfort of your lazy boy, typing comments on your phone.
Even if Sam wasn't holding the track for the saw, the thing fell in an instant. 'You didn't even think to try and catch it?' No, he didn't think at all. He reflexively reacted in a split second and made the correct decision to save himself from serious injury or worse. And to even have a chance of catching that thing safely you'd have to be a huge mfer, with free hands, in perfect position, and also not have the human reaction of jumping out of the way of huge, heavy things falling toward you very quickly. Maybe don't rely on a couple of small clamps below the center of gravity of an object that weighs hundreds of pounds that you have standing on end? Maybe don't blame your employees for executional/planning/managerial issues.
"Why didn't you try to stop it?!?!" Are you nuts? A multi hundred pound piece of wood is falling towards you, you move! If he tried to catch it, a broken bone would have been the best case scenario. I know people get invested in projects but it's never worth a debilitating injury or worse.
He edited out the douchebagery?? He was rude to Sam the entire video and then shouted at him for not catching it when it fell, and now all that has been edited out. That's really shady man
First time viewer, so I am going to give my 5 cents worth! I have managed 100's of staff members and I have never spoken down to any one of them like this. He may be a talented fella with the wood, but his management skills leave a lot to be desired. In Australia, if he'd had spoken down to a person like he did, a man or in some cases a woman, is gonna drop you on your ass! He swears consistently, and has anger issues. At the end of the day, the only thing one can be in control of is ones own attitude. I'd never subscribe to a channel like this, I do not understand why anyone would!
To be fair thats just about any trades shop though. Especially small ones. But normally even with something like that as a possibility, you get very well taken care of and actually treated like family (not just the BS PR saying lol). It's basically working with your dad and you cant hold the damn flashlight right no matter how much you point it right where he says XD. Places like that have cons but also a lot of pros.
I think most of the time he actually doesn't mean what he says when things go wrong like that. I have actually had friends and people I worked with who during the time it happened, they would say things like what he said to Sam about catching the desk and then afterwards they would come back and apologize cause the heat of the moment got to them. We don't know what happened off camera and although it would be really nice to see him come back and say it on camera for us viewers, I hope he did just make sure his workers were alright after the whole thing. Like he wrote on screen, if no one spoke for supposedly two hours, its like they were in shell shock over what had happened. But I don't know him personally, I can only know what I see on screen. I only have my own experience to pull from and what I see in his habits on screen. Maybe thats me wanting to believe in the best in people... but I would hope that is the case.
All through this video I kept hearing the song "Come With Me, And You'll Be, In A World Of OSHA Violations" There were just so many things done wrong and unsafe through this whole project. There isn't a piece of wood on this earth worth a human life.
I never agree with the people that say "I would hate to work for him" UNTIL I heard him say "you didn't even think to try to stop it?" Fuck off dude... I'm the supervisor in a sign fabrication shop and I always tell the guys "if it starts to go don't try to stop it just get out of the way and let it go it cost alot less to bondo a dent then it does repair a broken bone or stitch up a damn head.. and if it's a total loss it's way easier to tell the boss we gotta start over vs the boss tell your wife you got crushed under a 40' tall chunk of aluminum
John, when you're holding up a piece and having a hard time explaining how to put on clamps. Let one of them hold the piece (no explanation needed) and demonstrate how to clamp on one side while the other side follows your lead. LEADERSHIP 101
Last video of yours I watch. I have noticed it in other videos but this one was crazy. When you treat your employees like idiots, it doesnt make them want to work harder, it makes them want to look for work elsewhere. How about planning a little bit and setting up the clamps you need before moving a giant slab around. Every single mistake made here was your fault and would have been easily avoided had you assembled the team, explained the plan and asked for input/ opinions. If I were in that position, I would have walked away and let you deal with your own problems. By the way, that clamp setup with an aluminum extrusion was bound to fail, you were clamping on a sharp edge, how about using something flat, anything at all would have been better.
@@Joe.shotit Im glad to hear that. However, when your entire business revolves around public facing content, its all about perception. Im not choosing to boycott this content because I stand with the employees in some heroic act, you are grown men and can make your own choices. Im doing it because its hard to watch. RUclips videos are supposed to be entertaining and fun, sometimes you can even learn something. Watching John act like a child and never learn from his own mistakes doesnt check those boxes. By the way, sure sounds a whole lot like John asked you to do damage control in the comments. Ok, I'm not a woodworker, but that's a multi hundred pound slab of wood that you wanted Skinny Sam to get infront of John. Which would you rather have, a broken table, or an injured worker and a worker's comp case?
First and last video I'll ever see from this channel. For the entire comment section to be about how badly you treated someone, and for you to then edit the video without a hint of an apology, is atrocious behaviour. This is what "Do not recommend this channel" was invented for.
John is good at finding ways to cover his mistakes. They edited the original video. So, I guess we can just all forget how he treated Sam. All good now john!
If he treats his employees like that in footage he approves to be uploaded, imagine the way he treats them behind the scenes when he knows his behavior won’t be shown to the public. I haven’t seen the video before the edits, but the comments did a good job of describing what happened.
He’s not even treating them poorly.. you’re just a weakling.. he’s not even raising his voice. Are we really this weak as a people now that we can’t handle a stern voice?
Dude as much tool channels and wood working and testing etc I can't believe it took me so long to find ur channel. Love the content. Keep up the great work! Much love.
7 years ago I dropped a 115lb dumbbell I was racking from a bent over row. I made the mistake of trying to catch it. Even though I had just done 3 sets of 8 reps the weight was WAY to heavy to attempt catching/“saving” from a drop and I pulled my arm completely out of socket. Moral of the story, just because you are strong enough to handle a weight, does not mean you are anywhere close to being strong enough to catch it. STITCH, which is what you should do and something I am familiar with after several surgeries trying to fix my shoulder. Be grateful it’s a $2000 slab that broke and not an employee that might require 100x that in medical.
100%! No planning, no communication, just "do it, do it faster". If you're not going to plan properly you can't get all salty when the project literally falls apart.
Even John would have probably been on the floor, maybe not injured, but on the floor for sure. Sam was even holding the guide... Guide + heavy slab sounds like something bad
As a boat builder who has steam boxed ribs for a wooden boat. You have to be in a frenzy to get the timber bending around a mould as soon as it's out of the steam box... You can't be worrying about safety but already have a plan in your head to get the timber from A to B in seconds.
While I didn't see the unedited video, I was still getting the major douchebag vibes from the guy John, who apparently causes others to suffer from his case of headuphisassitis. However, I respectfully would disagree that who ever is "in charge" is solely responsible for other's mistakes. Trust me, no one is more compassionate, or more prone to bending over backwards to help keeping others safe at work, and helping them to understand the scope and potential consequences than I am. But even so, I've had many people who have worked for me who may start out with a good attitude, and aura of professionalism, but that can all turn to sh!t the moment someone decides they don't give a flying bleep about what they are doing. In short, everyone involved in making a mistake should own up to it. A captain may go down with his ship, but that doesn't stop a crew member from sinking it ;)

Steam bending is tricky. But you can strap a sealed box to both sides and pump it in under pressure. The key is to cool the slab very quickly so the moisture goes into the wood and expands IN the fibers. Controlling the bed is super important so using a spring steel strap will control the placement and attitude of the expansion and contraction of fibers. Kerfing is one way of doing it but using a sonic heating element along the bend will give you an articulating bend that DOESN’T DISRUPT FIBER DENSITY!!!!!! You can do this all for under $72,000 investment and can repeat it quickly and easily with this equipment. Our setup had to be customized for speed of use but we can do four custom tables per day now. Paid back the investment in 3 months just in increased orders.

John is the type of boss you don't want. Trying things for the first time you should always have a plan. When the boss doesn't fully explain the plan in his head and just expects everyone to read his mind and execute his secret plan perfectly, you have the wrong boss. 15:30 Hint: A table saw blade can be measured for thickness, but the cut will be SLIGHTLY thicker because it's nearly impossible to have zero wobble in a blade. You really want to do a test cut and measure the cut's channel width, not measure the saw blade's thickness. It very well might make a 0.125" cut. Also, as I said in my previous video, stick to damned decimal!!!

Some experienced advice (Been There And Done That). After a failed radius of multiple smaller planks, I built a radius steam box, after the 1st. steam and bend, we then installed the radius steam box and allowed it to set for 90 minutes and stopped the steam and let it set for 48 hours. after removing the clamps we discovered the radius was almost a perfect radius that we were looking for. 2 Steams need to be done. 2nd. being a 90 degree steam box. Note: The cut slots need to be chamfered, when the wood starts to dry if the slot cuts are contacting to much as the moisture leaves the wood will create pressure and cause the radius to try to straighten out. Also prior to the 1st. steam, apply a mild salt hot water solution to the cut grooves, best to boil the salt water.
Like a bull in a china shop. You should have built a form for it from the very beginning. Like building a form for concrete work. Don't be surprised when you have to find new employees because they found greener pastures.
I was thinking that too. those plywood templates just need a couple boards to square them up and hold them together into a bending buck and they wouldn't have been fumbling around dropping shit trying to bend and clamp it in place.

Not really, according to the comment I'm not even watching the video. As a former construction worker, current manufacturing engineer, workers' safety is my top priority and clearly this channel doesn't align with my values.
What part of this video was awesome ya potato? YAWN
Have to agree!
Sam said "I'm scared".
OH HELL YEAH...........YOU NAILED IT STEAMGEEZER
Good articulate comment!
as someone who has full on walked out on a bad manager - I concur (I'm not yet at that part in the video but seemingly from the comments I can piece together what's 'going' to happen) - being treated every single day I worked at that job like I was the shit on the sole of his shoe wore me down like nothing else.

So to everyone who posted concerning that one situation , thank you. I'll take some lessons from it for my behavior , perspectives , and how and when I say things.
It's always easier to see and understand somebody else screw up than yourself!

After seeing how snappy and impatient he was with the employees it was satisfying seeing that happen.
I honestly don't think it's even worth salvaging. I don't like the design. It fell apart because it's bad design. He blamed his employees for it breaking rather than for the construction method being [insert preferred 4-letter word]. The cuts made it weak. Apologise to Sam, as you said "shit happens". And he's a tiny dude, might have been seriously injured if he would have attempted to get in the way of that huge piece of wood. GOOD thing he didn't try something stupid and get underneath that slab.

That thing would’ve definitely injured John if the places were swapped bc his dumb ass would’ve tried to catch it
John was lucky as Sam did not try to stop the slab otherwise it would become a personal injury at work leading to possible lawsuit.

And not able to prepare anything...
Or lead, or execute tasks, ir do damn near anything other than lift sh*t. John does not belong in a shop- and especially doesn't belong in a shop as the boss. He should stick with tinkering in his garage, alone.
Does anybody have the unedited version of the video???

I will say two words fork lift. A fork lift and straps should have been used and not humans. The boss was an idiot.
I have seen and been around... no job is as important as the rest of your life.... be your own boss... if you work for others be ready to find new others if need be
Yeah, but that slab wasn’t 450 pounds.
You're not running a good shop.
wow, dodged a bullet on this channel.

I only saw the cut video, and even I thought, "Man, he needs to lighten up. What an abusive asshole."
I can't imagine what the original video showed.
Been peed off long ago with this guys bully, crass behaviour. Unsubscribed then it came back on again. He has no backbone as a man.

John wouldve tackled it 🤣

It seems like snippets all throughout the video have been cut out too. John was pretty much on one in this video and 90% of the backhanded comments have been taken out.
Basically makes everything look MUCH worse.
I watched it after the video, and the whole video just feels off. John has always been kind of a douche, but here it just feels like his abusing his position. They're not his friends, they're his employees.
With whom you work it is surprise you get anything done 😂

Piss poor planning. I feel bad for the guys trying their hardest to please boss man.
yeah, why is HE the "muscle" holding up the end when HE should be the one putting on the clamps and squares?

It's basically working with your dad and you cant hold the damn flashlight right no matter how much you point it right where he says XD. Places like that have cons but also a lot of pros.
Lol, I cannot believe he got mad that his employee didn't nicely lay down his $200 track to throw himself under a table he's not going to use or sell.

RUclips videos are supposed to be entertaining and fun, sometimes you can even learn something. Watching John act like a child and never learn from his own mistakes doesnt check those boxes. By the way, sure sounds a whole lot like John asked you to do damage control in the comments. For what its worth, I used to work for a guy like this and it did nothing but prevented me from learning and growing as a maker. After leaving and starting my own business I realized just how much I was being held back. This was the first comment I have posted on youtube in probably 10 years which says something. Good luck!
@@DavidBlum425 you’re 100% right public perception is huge for us. But as you know, you can’t make everyone happy all the time. It’s never enough for everyone. So balancing that line will never be perfect, so what you see to you might be too much, and to others be perfectly fine. It is a game that not many people “win” at doing. As far as damage control, you’re the first person Iv commented to and trust me I could’ve commented to many and there’s been nasty ones. Thanks for the civil convo David. Best of luck as well🤝
You can just tell you’ll have to walk on egg shells around John when he’s stressed I couldn’t work with him
I was going to comment exactly this. I thought for sure I was going to open the comments and see nothing about it but thankfully a bunch of other people noticed as well. John seems like a good guy, but when he's stressed, look out because he gets the bully mentality and it must be miserable to be there during it.
Ok, I'm not a woodworker, but that's a multi hundred pound slab of wood that you wanted Skinny Sam to get infront of John. Which would you rather have, a broken table, or an injured worker and a worker's comp case?
And or a lawsuit for unsafe working conditions.
He was being facetious. 🙄
@@KB3AOL He clearly wasn't.
@@KB3AOL No he was throwing a tantrum and blaming everyone but himself.
Never be that hard on employees ... sam is prop the hardest worker there.
Karma got ya good there Johnny boy😂 imagine what he’s like off camera to his staff
Was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't have any employees if I spoke to people like that.
OMG, i was thinking like 5 min where he mistreats Sam and this is the answer. Thats sad af :/
Pur it! I think that would look AWESOME, and it also can showcase that, even though things don't always go as planned, the result can be beautiful!
"I used to be an offensive lineman in the NFL".
Now he's just offensive to his staff.
Funny, search him up and it looks like he never made the starting NFL line up. Just stayed on the training roster
@@waynasfamilyadventures147 that makes it even funnier lmao
Pour it and promote Sam for doing the right thing! Give him a raise cuz he just saved you a boat load of money from an injury.
If he treats his employees like that in footage he approves to be uploaded, imagine the way he treats them behind the scenes when he knows his behavior won’t be shown to the public.
I haven’t seen the video before the edits, but the comments did a good job of describing what happened.
That's a true epiphany
lol. I’m just glad you’re upset about him enough for everyone who works for him to get over it.
im at the part where they bent the first side and i just felt this is a guy who miss treats employees
good to see other people notice as well
He’s not even treating them poorly.. you’re just a weakling.. he’s not even raising his voice. Are we really this weak as a people now that we can’t handle a stern voice?
@@chadly19 you say this while getting upset at a youtube comment lmao
As a boss and manager I would not fathom being such an prick to my guys for my failures in planning and knowledge.
100%! No planning, no communication, just "do it, do it faster". If you're not going to plan properly you can't get all salty when the project literally falls apart.
@@Robert-sq7bp Got to push out the new video 🤡

Sam (?) would have been squashed , it was good he jumped out of the way, sad for the table but good for the person
Im glad this is #1 comment, owes that kid an apology
Even John would have probably been on the floor, maybe not injured, but on the floor for sure. Sam was even holding the guide... Guide + heavy slab sounds like something bad
Stitch it
Things said in the heat of the moment tend to not be fueled by logic, he clearly doesn't blame them for not catching it, as he said, shit happens.
As a boat builder who has steam boxed ribs for a wooden boat. You have to be in a frenzy to get the timber bending around a mould as soon as it's out of the steam box... You can't be worrying about safety but already have a plan in your head to get the timber from A to B in seconds.
John, you're the boss and in charge for others "mistakes". You messed it up, no one else.
A captain may go down with his ship, but that doesn't stop a crew member from sinking it ;)
@@Rick-the-Swiftit's never an accident when you get that attitude from people, specially when there was a sudden change. Most commonly it happens when the boss deserved it. Also its very common, that the one that says "im the most..." Tends to be

If the table fix vid doesn't include a public apology to Sam, I'm out. There's plenty of other talented woodworkers to watch.
Same. And the apology better be sincere, not just to appease the viewers.
A bonus for Sam couldn't hurt for putting up with Johns moods.
Dude, yes, this 10000%. It feels like working with this dude is super super toxic, but he's probably used to people putting up with it because of the YT fame. It's disgusting. Sam, don't let this guy define your worth! You're a talented guy with a ton of potential!
unsub for Sam!
Editing the video to remove everything that you got called out for is Shady AF.
well seeing as they edited out his freaking out on sam, I'm guessing that is the apology.
Smelt it! Find a way to use a brass insert instead of epoxy
I'm really glad Sam did not try to catch that, he would have been flat.
Stitch it!
Why is he always so mean to Sam. You were attempting something super janky. You failed. You're the boss. Own it. Sam did the right thing bruh
John gets a gun pointed at him.
John: “Sam, you didn’t even think about stepping in front of the gun?”
Paid back the investment in 3 months just in increased orders.
john seems like the type of guy who thinks everything is everyone else's fault and everyone but him is incompetent he really said why didnt you stop it and if it was sam who got on the table hed say whyd u jump on the table so hard and shake the clamps loose

Here’s the fix needed: An apology video to Sam.
I watch
I know this is a few months old but........ I literally was laughing so hard I almost passed out. Not laughing at you, Laughing WITH you.
I jumped for my phone to comment on this after watching it on my TV… an apology is badly needed to Sam!!
Me too he was the reason it fell when he climbed his wide load up onto the table anyway then get sideways with the only guy willing to put up with him to do the project. Smh
John is the type of boss you don't want. Trying things for the first time you should always have a plan. When the boss doesn't fully explain the plan in his head and just expects everyone to read his mind and execute his secret plan perfectly, you have the wrong boss. I can't stand employers not emotionally mature enough to accept responsibility for failure. The boss should never pass failure onto the people working under their direction.
This is not the first time, this video just highlighted johns inability to lead.
Pour it over words that say "Sorry Sam" to remind you that you need to treat Sam better and that you were the one making a mistake
Man i'm glad i dont work for John lol

@@scttydsntknw I was looking for that comment, because I saw the incident in slowmo and only then really knew what was going on in that moment, because it happened all so fast
Also prior to the 1st. steam, apply a mild salt hot water solution to the cut grooves, best to boil the salt water.
pour it, stiching looks like "correcting a mistake" pouring looks like "we designed it like this"
Very good point
Like a bull in a china shop. You should have built a form for it from the very beginning. Like building a form for concrete work. Don't be surprised when you have to find new employees because they found greener pastures.
I was thinking that too. those plywood templates just need a couple boards to square them up and hold them together into a bending buck and they wouldn't have been fumbling around dropping shit trying to bend and clamp it in place.
I used to really like john and his work. This video makes me rethink my opinions of the man.
if i dont see a sincere apology video and subsequent behaviour changes, im unsubscribing. This video warrants me to unsub, but for Sams sake, i wanna see change.
