An alternative could be having day be longer than night eg dark night is 10-4 and we have a dawn/dusk period of medium lighting for a few hours

This is actually a great idea. I'd love a suite of tools around this idea: lock time (so its locked to whatever time you wanted) and adjust time so you could have a short night but still have pretty sunrises and sunsets, or a long night, etc.
V-Rising let's you adjust time like that. We typically set it to have fairly long 24 hour cycles (so a full 24 hours might take 20 mins) but has a very short daytime (since your more or less trapped during daytime it can get tedious if day is very long).
Settings like that always make me think of weird stuff. What would the world look like with 3-4 hour long days an 20 hour long nights? Lol. Probably way less large complex vegetation for sure.

Would love an ore randomizer, keeping the same counts of each and some logic for where things can go, but giving each new start a very different feel.
Honestly, an extra option for randomizing the counts would be extremely interesting, as it would push us toward different recipes.

I have a Minecraft world that's just named "Test", which is a flat map in creative with a bunch of random things built trying to either design resource farms or just testing a bunch of things trying to find something that looks good, that would involve a lot of building and dismantling. I've also briefly done it with Factorio, when designing a large nuclear plant, because Factorio nuclear plants have to deal with heat transfer and two types of fluids, and if you partially fill in a body of water to build around, you can't undo that.

The story will only be revealed when the game exits Early Access. This not only means we all get to experience it together but that there isn't any kind of weird change midway through that sends us sideways. If they had a storyline now, then they might have issues explaining some of the modifications to the game that have developed. It's much better to develop the functionality of the game separately and only really commit to a final story when the story is done.

Being able to unlock stuff up front is nice, but one setting I think would be useful to have would be one to carry over unlocked alternate recipes and MAM progress from a previous save (as sort of a "New Game Plus" type mode) instead of just unlocking everything. I am tentatively planning to start a fresh world with update 8, but having to go back and unlock a bunch of the alternate recipes makes me second-guess it. Presumably this would require carrying over the collected hard drive progress as well though to keep it balanced, which might be a bit trickier to do.

It's like having to enable cheats when you make a world in Minecraft, but a bit more flexible. The biggest thing I want to try with this is starting a new world and enabling the automatic alt recipes from the beginning, because I like the hard drives but I rarely use the alt recipes because by the time I get them, I already have my whole production line of that item set up. Love the idea to make AGS a one-way action - as you say gamers will take the easy option when the going gets tough and miss out on the satisfaction (which let's face it is in the name). They will tell you that they won't, but they will, and they'll want to enable it, cheat and then disable it so they can say they achieved it for real - making it one way retains the challenge, the integrity of a real achievement and therefore the satisfaction - great job!

The option to skip a few phases (basically skipping to coal so I don't have to deforest an entire zone for biofuel) is fantastic. Adding a flying toggle to the base (non-modded, anyway) game is also fantastic; I can turn it off while exploring, but for me it's essential while building big factories (the hover pack never quite clicked for me).

Just a suggestion for the Advanced Game Settings. you could make it so that players can lock them to prevent cheating in items while allowing changes like passive mode or removing spiders. That way temptation would be completely removed.
Edit: I understand that this may be kinda hard to understand what I mean. But For some people having access to cheats can be a tempting way and a quick way to ruin the fun of a game. Ultimately I understand that this may be hard to implement because the devs don't want to be dealing with people asking them how to unlock. Perhaps they could take a page from Rimworld where the Dev Options can be completely disabled but to reenable it is just a file that needs to be deleted. In the FAQ website they could have a page about it to help people because having a distance rather than an in-game option that you can change on the fly can be very tempting. Also I know that they lock you out by default but being able to change stuff like retaliate and drop no items can be helpful so having the option to lock in the change after you set it could be helpful. Ultimately I know mods can add in this feature however I see it as an accessibility feature so it should be available to everyone without having to download mods. I know that this would take time and energy to implement. But with that said this is just a suggestion.

It will make it much easier to set up new worlds with specific settings so that we don't have to replay the "tutorial" phases over and over again, which has always been a struggle to get through, since most of us have played that content hundreds of times. It will smooth the start up when all we want to do is start fresh on a new factory together. these will let us all start at P1 or something and just get to playing rather than spending our entire first session getting through the first couple tiers.
