Why (most) Games Fail at Immersion.

- As someone who has been gaming since they were five on their mom's phone with Cut The Rope. I've played more games than I could count. I've played almost every single Mario game, every Far Cry game, and every PvP game you could think of. And a discussion a lot of people seem to talk about is immersion. In one way or another, every game that tries its hardest to be immersive falls flat in at least one aspect. So here is why I think most games fail at immersion.
Songs used in video:
Outer Wilds - Travelers by Andrew Prahlow
Minecraft - Strad by C418
Minecraft - Dog by C418
Minecraft - Cat by C418
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - Main Theme by Gustaf Grefberg
Minecraft - Haggstrom by C418
Minecraft - Danny by C418
Minecraft - Biome Fest by C418
I found this video randomly but it might be one of the best things I've watched in a while
i appreciate that bro thanks for watching
@@6pho I'll watch your other videos eventually because you're videos are hella entertaining
The minecraft music is probably a big factor haha, but yes indeed nice video
Spider-man’s spider sense is diegetic actually.
The villain’s may not be able to see it, but it represents something actually present in the scene, not something added over purely for our benefit. Spider-man’s spider sense IS part of the scene.
The counter indicator from the Arkham games, however, is non-diegetic because it doesn’t indicate Bruce’s “sense-lines”, it’s just a cue for the player.
Good work my guy, i thought it was a video from a channel that has more than 100k subs keep it up like that u gon make it big.
Usually don't really react on videos, but since you don't have lots of comments I figured I would leave one.
Great video man. Pretty much everything was great.
- Understandable voice / recorder
- Enough pauses while still going over your points quickly
- Clear structure
- Subtitles! Huge credits for this one because as a non-native English speaker this always helps me understand points much better
Really happy that RUclips recommended this one
This video is really well put together
I know this may not make a lot of sense to most people but Zelda games always immerse me the most because of mainly the atmosphere and the indescribable Zelda magic
@@josiebobos i get it, my favorite zelda game is Wind Waker because it was my first one but BoTW and TotK are both amazing
@@6pho windward although at launch everyone was hating it because it looked like a kids game it’s fantastic looking back on it
@@josiebobos graphics and art style have really held up

@@toddhoward4209 thank you todd howard sorry about all that starfield talk
Already knew this was gonna be peak when i saw Cut the rope
Some things to keep in mind is that there are four types of immersion in games:
• 'Systems immersion' When players are deeply engaged with a game's mechanics
• 'Spatial immersion' When players feel they are a part of the world
• 'Empathic/social immersion' When players feel connected to in game characters or people.
• 'Narrative/sequential immersion' When players are lost in a game's story or progression.
You do a good job of touching on those points in your video. However, not every game needs to have all four of them to be "immersive". Immersion is one of the most misunderstood aspects of playing games. You claim that the PlayStation single player games are the pinnacle of immersion, but they are only the pinnacle in one or maybe two of the four types of immersion. You also claim that multiplayer games are the hardest to get immersed into, but they are definitely the best at empathetic/social immersion.
A lot of people make the mistake of talking about immersion as a singular thing a game has or not. The conversation needs to be shifted instead to which of these four types do they have; They ways they do it well, and how they can do the others better if needed.
Games don't need rich stories and beautiful worlds to have systems immersion (Simulator games, or Minecraft). Big story games don't need deep mechanics in order to have great spatial or narrative immersion (looking at you Last of Us).
Curious if anyone has anymore thoughts.
fire video, cant wait for the next one
Digging this man, keep it up
Wow man this is impressive, the RUclips algorithm cooked something great for me today 😂
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series (and it mods) are very good at immersion.
my brother went to the movie adaptation premiere
wow this is an amazing video man
0:19 which far cry game is that? I can’t think of any far cry games where rescued hostages can shoot at you other than five, and that’s only if you piss them off somehow
I am Lyndon B Johnson and I approve this message
Eh, I have to disagree on a couple of points:
1. You seem really fixated on having "No HUD" or a minimal HUD at best. And while that is totally fine, that is just your personal preference. I'm not saying that things like mini-maps should be required or that they are actually any good for immersion. But communicating things to the player on the HUD can be a pretty valuable. Maybe not a mini-map, but health bars, special power bars, etc...can sometimes be vital to communicating to the player for their enjoyment. Of course, I love the idea of allowing the HUD to be turned off because it allows the player to decide how they want it. That's why God of War has an "Immersion Mode" instead of requiring you to play with the HUD on, so that players can choose how they want to play. But saying that having a HUD off always makes a game more immersive really depends on the game and the type of story-telling it chooses to employ.
2. Just like how "bigger isn't always better", more diegetic gameplay mechanics isn't always better either. Sure, diegetic gameplay mechanics can make a world of difference for immersion in some genres of games, but in others, it makes a lot more sense to display information, data, movement, etc...for the player. Because in some genres, if more and more mechanics become diegetic, the more frustrated a player can become when they don't know what's actually going on. I'm not saying your wrong in most of what you are talking about. Rather, preaching about diegetic gameplay only goes so far when talking about all games in general, is all I'm saying. It doesn't apply to each, every, or even most games. It depends on the game.
3. Minecraft has actually really expanded from what you said in your video. There's a whole new host of things to do in the game and honestly, whole new worlds of possibility. To say that you have fully done everything...is possible, especially with 13 years of playing it as you say. But eh, if you ever want to come back and look at it, it' really has expanded from even just 5 years ago.
As for those first two points, honestly, if you just reworded the title and focused the video more on the topic of "Open World" games, I wouldn't have any gripes, it's just the fact that you focus on quite a few open world games, where as a few non-open world games in the video only get a passing mention. Still though, this was a good video and made me realize that mini-maps are kind of overrated, even though I've never thought of them as such.
i appreciate this you have some really good points
keep it up lil' bro you're going to go far.
