Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a song from the 1986 stage musical of the same name. It was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and additional lyrics by Mike Batt. The song was originally recorded by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley, which became a UK hit single in 1986, prior to the musical. In its theatrical debut, it was sung by Brightman and Michael Crawford in their roles as Christine Daaé and the Phantom.

Marko makes this my favourite version of the phantom and I think the truest to the character - The phantom isn't a refined polished gentleman, he's a dangerous outcast living in the cellars of the opera house, and I think Marko captures that grit and pain better than anyone else I've heard doing it.

I totally agree with you, Marko Hietala is my favourite phantom ever! I love Norm Lewis, and the others, but Marko is embodying the phantom's true spirit, dangerous and tempting, hypnotizing and scaring, haunting and tortured.
The Phantom is insane. Squirrelly and mad. This performance captures that succinctly.
Funny Fact: Marko Hietala just won the Masked Singer in Finland a few days ago.

I think the way Marco sings this fits the character way better than the original. The Phantom is such a dark character, I'm surprised the original wasn't more like this.
Absolutely. He makes the Phantom sound a bit insane. Which he should, really, when you think of that story.
I know what you mean, but considering the genre/scene this is originally from... nah. They "couldn't" have done it back then or they would've got destroyed. But I DO think that the musical scene should explore it's horizon to allow more variance (maybe it has already, I'm not THAT familiar with it). But I'll add a bold suggestion; maybe even the opera scene should allow it in some cases. After all, it's just one way to express emotion and/or mindset.
And as Henk Poorts showed, the opera singer could well pull it off too, just needs practice with a proper technique.
To be fair, I've heard that Sir Andrew apparently always wanted the Phantom's role to be sung by someone with a "rock and roll" quality to his voice, so this is actually pretty damn perfect for the spirit of it.
I stumbled upon a video where Marko is singing Raoul with a Finnish opera singer, Think of me. Sound quality isn't that good, but very interesting. Marko can do anything...

Technically, she commented on Tarja and Marco's chemistry. They still remained friends, they even sang together in 2017. It was Tuomas that couldn't handle being friendzoned.
@@fluffybacon Actually Marko has stated that it was he who told Tuomas "you have to get rid of her".
But he was doing it as a professional musician who saw that the band was not well; Tuomas and Tarja had a much harsher schism because they had known each other for so long. Marko was still a new member so he never had any strong feelings about the issue

For context, Tarja was very sick that day, so much so she couldn't get a note out at rehearsals. Jukka, the drummer, also had severe head pains (hence why you see him hoding his head at the beginning of the video). Knowing this and seeing how they still performed phenomenally well for this longer-than-normal show, one that was being recorded, is a true testament to their skills.

@@roykliffen9674 Indeed this was. Everyone else knew this would be their last time playing together with her. So you can interpret a lot of their expressions and mannerisms and the whole emotional charge of the song through that.

I'd say Tuomas is more a Vampire Prince, but he could have been a Pirate before he was turned.
I grew up with Tarja era Nightwish, and I'll always love her, but I love when people come to this video for her only to be blown away by Marco. He absolutely MADE this performance for me. When you see a professional production of Phantom, the male lead is always this clear, crisp voice that I never felt fit the character. Marco is EVERYTHING the Phantom should be to me. Dark, powerful, and malevolent. Could you imagine and old time opera house full of wealthy patrons if their show was interrupted by THIS voice? They would be absolutely terrified. So amazing...

I saw them live with this lineup. Among the public, there were a surprisingly large number of people you'd rather expect to see at an opera house and not at a metal concert.
Marco's high notes absolutely blew me away the first time I heard them. I expected him to be reasonably good because many metal musicians are quite good singers, but he's on another level from what I expected. I adore this cover. It really captures the feel while being so utterly unique at the same time.

@@luisnunes3863 Oh, I've listened to plenty of power metal. My favorite band was Iced Earth (I say was because of a certain recent incident involving schaeffer), and I was familiar with Rhapsody before they were Rhapsody of Fire, Camelot, Epica, etc. etc.
My point was more that because Marco isn't lead vocalist, but one of the musicians, you don't expect him to be as good a singer as he actually is.

Marco Hietala is one of the FINEST metal vocalists still working today. He's been jamming with Nightwish since their Century Child album and was in the band TAROT with his brother on guitars for over 30 years. He has one of the most instantly recognizable voice in metal music PERIOD!!!!

It's worth noting that Andrew Lloyd Webber himself has gone on record to say that this is his favorite cover of Phantom Of The Opera.

You obviously need to listen to more Nightwish, they have 3 vocalists now (Troy has a lovely Folk voice). Rather than argue whether Tarja or Floor is better, most fans have agreed Marko is the best singer in Nightwish.
That’s kinda why I like it. They’re expecting the female to slay, but then Marko SHOCKS them

I think one thing to remember here as well is that NEITHER of them speak english as their first language. A lot of the vocal choices may be accent related. Which makes it even more amazing in my opinion. Also Marco has no official vocal training as far as I know. He's just a rock legend.

Everytime I see someone react to this amazing performance I always love how everybody is amazed by Tarja... then inmediatly by Marko, by the time they all done talking about how amazing he is, he inmediatly blows their mind even more haha. I remember watching this performance for the first time back in 2005/06 and everytime I watch or hear it I have to stop whatever I'm doing, up the volume way over the top and enjoy it. Thank god for living in an era that allows us to listen to amazing performances whenever we want.

Curiosity: Tarja was sick when she recorded this show. She had flu or something in her throat. She did the show taking medication.
Tarja doesn't need any excuse. She sounded great regardless. This young lady is starting out trying to become a successful opera singer such as Tarja. Her critiques are not needed.
@@Dirtnap1986 For sure. In fact, saying that Tarja was sick on the day of the recording only serves to praise the vocal quality of Tarja, who, even though sick, managed to make this performance so incredible.

In my personal opinion Tarja is the better singer between Herself and Floor... but i seem to be in the minority in this opinion. I've followed Nightwish from the very beginning and of all of their vocalists, Tarja has always been my favourite. Nothing against the other two, they are both very talented... i just think Tarja was the best of them.

@@MetalHeadReacts I'm not sure, but that could be because she was the first, and it's always hard for us to accept a replacement. Human nature, you know.
So, I get it if she has a special place in your heart.
I myself only discovered Nightwish a few years ago with Floor already in place, so of course I prefer her, since she was the first singer I knew.
However, I also prefer her wider range over Tarja's nearly always operatic style. Floor can do operatic as well, but she can also throw in growling, metal, belting, etc.
To me, she's more versatile and can pull off a greater variety of styles and sounds than Tarja. Again, just my opinion.

In my opinion, this concert (End Of An Era) is the best concert I've EVER heard-from any band. It is absolute power and perfection rolled into one.

@@maggiereneemusic I’m teaching a first aid course today, or I would. I’m an intermediate ukulele player and novice guitar player, but I love learning about music from many perspectives (theory, instrumental, singer, gear, cultural, experience level). Treated music like background noise most of my life. Correcting that later in life. Thanks for what you do.

@Mapz Hmar Zate Do you have a source for that? Because from what I heard the rest of the band basically forced Tuomas to kick her, which he took really hard because he had to decide between a childhood friend and the band he loved.
@Mapz Hmar Zate actually, it was Tarja's/Marcelo's idea. it just happened prematurely because you don't go and give ultimatums to your band mates. love her voice, but she is not very bright. never was.
Marco actually makes the phantom evil and dark. I can't listen to anyone else do this anymore, it always seems weak without the grit
Well, Henk Poort does amazing job too: it'a like a mountain bellows at you. He also sings Hello Darkness My Old Friend with the strength, challenge, vision and captivation that Disturbed does.

My point was, that this interpretation is more aggressively dark.
The phantom should be unnerving, frightening and insidious, IMO , and that's what Marko made him.

Absolutely agree with that! After listening to this stunning version and how Marco turns the Phantom into a scary, menacing character I can't listen to any other soft "mickey mouse" version of this anymore! The phantom needs this grit and darkness!
PS Well I agree that Henk Poort does it quite well too. But I still prefer Marco's version :)
marko's version is fun but it's more phantom of the paradise. the phantom is meant to be an 1800s-era haughty, pseudo-gentlemanly opera teacher lol
Tarja is one of those singers whose accent you can really hear in her performances. That's what I usually end up checking varied pronunciations up to.

I know everyone reacts to Marko hitting those high rock belts, but the thing that really impresses me is the sustain he has! He starts singing a few seconds before Tarja's last note and holds it until _after_ she stops singing!
Sure, he does that in his backing vocals all the time of course, but it just hits me in this song.

Are we going to completely ignore the fact that Maggie is amazed by the E flat (6), gushes over it being in the whistle register, but also hits the note without any effort at all? An opera singer or not, that is impressive.

@@maggiereneemusic Also Marko's old band called Tarot. there is song called Tides "Undead indeed" live and also Wings of darkness etc. You could explore more that band avenue too. Also Marko is kinda appearing everywhere. If you just search Marco hietala in youtube you can find all kinds of things... Including also Northern Kings project where he was.
Don't forget to take a look at Marko's recent solo work as well. "Stones", "Voice of My Father" are two of my favorites from his solo album earlier this year.

I don't know what tickles me more...the music or your reactions to it! I'm a huge "Nightwisher". I spent many years in a Choral group as a Mezzo/Soprano/Alto. We were a 67 person group and our Instructor would have the same reactions when we pulled it together! The same joy on her face. Thank you for your enthusiasm, knowledge and BEAUTIFUL VOICE! You bring back so many great memories for me, 40 years later, because you remind me so much of my Instructor! I would love to hear more of YOU! Now what can I say about Nightwish??? When reactors talk about vowel placement i think they're forgetting the influence of having an accent. These guys are from Finland after all. Very different phonetically to English.

I am so happy you highlighted Marko's ability. Since day one on his Nightwish journey he has been in the shadows of which ever lead singer was on (Tarja, Anette or Floor) supporting them and harmonizing. He is a very accomplished vocalist with tons of formal training and for years he lead a band called Tarrot with his brother. Just like the rest of the Nightwish members, he checks his ego at the door and serves the music and what each song needs at any particular time. Also, he is a very well respected base and guitar player and he has had an active roll in almost all of Nightwishes song writting (along of course with Tuomas). His decision to leave Nightwish in early January 2021 was a huge blow. But all of us who have been following him since his early mid 80s days and mid 90s with Nightwish know that he will again turn up somehow, somewhere and grace us again with his talent. Farewell brother Marko. May you find your Walden soon.

I think it's like the difference between the Disturbed and Simon/Garfunkel of Sound of Silence. Most versions of Phantom are so prim and proper, such as Sarah Brightman or Birdy but this is more like making a pact with the devil and I love this!

Marco could easily be the lead vocalist in Nightwish if he ever wanted to be, but he is happy with just doing back-up vocals.
There's many songs where he has quite as much role as the lead singer. But yeah there could be more songsjust for Marco.
When I read these comments suggesting songs to listen Marco it surprises me that "The Siren" doesn't get suggested. And Marco is clearly the lead singer in that.

Now for Floor Jensen (Nightwish's 3rd singer) & Henk Poort (10+ years as the Dutch Phantom) - Phantom of the Opera.
Definitely worth checking out. Floor has a very unique and novel approach to Christine's part that you might find interesting, and Henk is a classically trained Opera singer and musical theater performer who pays homage to Marko in his take on the Phantom.
Tarja and Marko are more interesting 🤨..to me, purist.
