- Juilliard trained opera singer, Maggie Reneé, reacts to Nightwish - The Islander live at Tampere. 🤘🎶❤️ Nightwish is a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen.
"The Islander" is the tenth track on symphonic metal band Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album.
As with some of Nightwish' other songs the song is highly influenced by folk music rather than the symphonic power metal they usually play, and uses only acoustic guitars, rather than electric. It is fully acoustic, except the use of some keyboard effects and drums, though folk-inspired. Marko Hietala sings the whole song with backing vocals from Anette Olzon and Tuomas Holopainen. He also wrote all of the music for the song, unlike most others, which were written by Tuomas Holopainen. The song used guest musician Troy Donockley who is featured on several instruments.

Would love you to react to Yma Sumac, the "Peruvian Nightingale". She had IMO for the longest time the biggest range (4.5 - 5 octaves), plus best transitions until Dimash came along. And her famous double voice plus birds imitating. Got few suggestions (last one only over a minute long). These ones have been reacted to by Vocal coaches too.

Honestly it won’t be the same band. Even with all the bad vibes and changes with Tarja and Annette , Marco was always there. I love Floor but I thought , when Tarja left they should have just put Marco as lead vocals. This band can’t catch a break, they finally get the perfect mix and it lasts 5 years… dammit.

This is one of the few songs mainly written by Marko, Tuomas helped with the lyrics.
Troy's instrument is a low whistle, the shortest one not played in this song is a tin whistle, they are traditional irish flutes.
Other songs to listen with Marko as the lead singer are "While your lips are still red", "High Hopes" (Pink Floyd cover, he absolutely killed it), or "Endlessness" from the new album Human I Nature (no live video since now, and unfortunately maybe never, but a lyrics video).
Marko is singing since 1985 and has another band called Tarot with his brother.
I absolutely love how much Floor is happy for Marko at the end of this song.

Marko was also in a supergroup called Northern Kings (with Jarko Ahola, JP Leppaluoto and Tony Kakko). You might want to check them out. So much vocal power in that band!

Another reason Floor is great is that she sang back-up without overpowering the lead. Not many can do both in the same set.
Shows great respect for Marco also. She doesn't try to be the centre of attention. I love the respect they all have for each other.

Marko sounds good with everyone. He's able to find a chemistry with Tarja, Floor, and Charlotte with Delain, despite how different all their voices are. (Side note: I can't recommend listening to Delain with Marko enough. I'd start with Nothing Left or The Gathering (live version of both). Also, Hands of Gold and Tragedy Of the Commons are great for a bit different vibe)

I think Floor's mic wasn't higher because she is the backing vocals, even though she sings some "lead" parts, it's a Marko song so he is supposed to be in the front, though maybe she could have used some more volume still.

Floor's mike being quieter at first was deliberate; introducing her voice more in the background to create greater impact at the end of the song when it ramped up.

Maggie, Troy is playing a low whistle. It is the big brother of the Irish tin whistle but usually made of wood. It fingers the same as a tin whistle but sounds much more mellow.
They come in a range of keys and can produce a two octave range.
I had a wooden whistle and it wooden whistle

Fun fact. I didn't know what an albatross was when I was watching an episode of Hogan's Heroes (a 60's sit com, those in Europe might know it as 'A Cage Full Of Heroes') The bad guy's had a plan they called 'Operation Albatross'. Curious, I looked it up. If you just look at pictures without knowing their size, they kind of look like a cross between a seagull that took steroids and a duck, but recently I found out they have an 11 foot wingspan (3.35m) they are VERY large birds.

Doesn't look like you've done it. Same show, believe it was their finale - Live at Tampere - Nightwish - Greatest Show On Earth. So much variation of the vocals and musicality. FYI, it's a long one at about 20 minutes. So worth it!

You should really check out Marko's solo album Mustan Sydämen Rovio. Try "Isäni Ääni", he also did an english version of the album, but the finnish version IS better :)

FYI - the part not closed-captioned where he's speaking in Finnish, he basically stops and asks the audience "hey, this is the chorus, do you know the words? Yes? Then sign along with me...."
You should also watch the video made for the song; it features the second female singer for Nightwish [Anette Olzon, between Tarja and Floor, has a much softer voice than either], and the actor playing the weathered sea captain looks EXACTLY as you would expect him to from listening to this song.

Floor´s microphone was excactly as high as it should be. This song is a Marko lead song and as one of the few people on the planet, Marko had the worlds greatest female vocalist as a backup singer ;). How cool that must have been for him ;) He is an amazing singer and deserved the main spotlight on this one :)

Marko: what a voice - such a range, such a passion. Same has to be said about Floor! And the same has to be said about Tarja when she was in the band. So Nightwish always had such powerful singers. And also when Anette was the lead vocalist they were great. Don‘t understand those people who have to argue about who’s best. I love Tarja, as well as Floor. And then Marko! What else can you ask for? But back to the performance here: It is so beautiful. So much passion in Marko‘s voice. I love the folkish style of The Islander.

Marko did originally intend to be an operatic tenor. Those double-necked guitars were fairly common in the 70s and 80s, but not seen so often now.

If Nightwish wants to continue performing live, they will have to hire 3 new members. They are not going to find someone who sings so great, that plays the guitar and bass so well, and that looks so wonderfully Finish Viking out there looking for a job. They are going to have to hire a singer, a bass player and a looker (unless looks don't matter, then they might be able to replace him with just two people.)

It's not that often that the guys get to speak to an audience in their mother tongue, so I guess it could come as a surprise. Somehow, though, I think it added a connection between Marko and the crowd that was more intimate than it might otherwise have been.

Marco is one of the greatest artists in metal I have ever heard. Here are some more euro metal bands. Mono Inc., Marco's other band called Tarot and a kind of goth metal band called Blutengel they sing in both english and german, they have a very gothy/vampy sound. But Blutengle's latest record they did covers of their favorite 80's songs. 🏝
