Hello William [ Bangkok Voice Coach ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen] from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

(Symphonic) metal and classical music/musical theatre are more related than most people tend to think. Both require extreme musicianship. During the 10th anniversary concert of Epica, another symphonic metal band, often even heavier than Nightwish, Floor and Simone, the lead singer of Epica, did a Stabat Mater with the orchestra and choir that were on stage with them for the occasion. The metal audience loved it. (And so do I).

You were asking about why they performed this song in F minor instead of the original key of G minor. Here is what has happened. They still are playing in the key of G minor. However, what Nightwish is doing here (and other bands do this as well) is that they have tuned their instruments down one whole step, so while the actual sheet music is still in G minor, to the ear it sounds like it is in a lower key (in this case, an entire step down), which would put it in F minor (to the ear). This helps primarily for the singers to not have to strain their vocal chords so much to sing at a higher key and stay in pitch to that key, plus makes it easier to perform without damaging their chords at all.

    • @BangkokVoiceCoach
      @BangkokVoiceCoach  Год назад

Right. It’s definitely a bit more of a strain in G.

Please do check her classical career with Mein Herr Marquis from her Beauty & The Beat tour or Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti. Tarja said in an interview, that she had to adjust her classical singing a lot to make it work with the metal music and singing in front of a metal band. Classical music was her first love and that powerful lyrical soprano voice the very reason Tuomas decided to turn Nightwish into a symphonic metal band instead of a more acoustic band.

Blackjealousy happened. Triangle drama. Publically it was something else.
Also, yeah, they did disagree on how long world tours should be, and how many gigs in a week. Tarja wanted less both, the boys wanted more both. The boys wanted to go full speed when they were in rising trend, and Tarja was stepping on breaks. (Not the main reason though).
But one of these things why Nightwish so much interests and rises emotions and debate.

I would be interested in your opinion about this production, if we add that Tarja had the flu that day.
Anyway, the short story of the breakup is that Tarja wanted them to take on fewer gigs because she was worried about her voice. The other members did not agree to this, so Tarja indicated even before the tour that she would leave the band after it was over. And Tuomas did not handle this situation well. Even the band was founded by Tarja, Tuomas and Emppu.

Marcello stood up for Tarja. Yep that was a problem. What the band wanted, and the label wanted would have destroyed her voice, livelihood and mental health as well as physical health.
Since she has only gotten more skilled over the last 18 years with 19 albums to her name so far and 2 more announced she was right to protect her interests.
I don't even suggest malice or Ill intent an honest difference of priorities will do it.
They see her as a commodity to fame and profits. But it's her life and career. Her responsibility to put herself 1st. And of course her manager and her husband's responsibility. There is such a thing as being overgiving. Of being taken advantage of because you don't like confrontation. Just thoughts to ponder.

Why they fired Tarja? I'll try to keep it brief.
Before this last album together, Tarja had already given notice (too far ahead in time) she would leave the band. It was the band life of living in a tourbus for 12 months in row that got to her. She made a deal: She would 2 more albums together, but because she did not want to be on that bus (ever again), she would fly-in just before the show and leave right after.
The rest of the band found out that that meant she was not pulling her weight on promotional stuff in between concerts. Also, when one member is no longer invested in the future of the band, that did not sit well. But worst was yet to come: this tour got extended from 12 to 18 months without consulting Tarja, because she was not on that bus when the decision was made. Tickets of dozens of concerts were sold in minutes and when Tarja found out, she did whatever she could to have those sold-out concerts CANCELLED. That kind of betrayal was unacceptable to the rest of the band and they decided to finish this tour together, but to NOT to include her in that last album and last tour.
So far all was perfectly reasonable, until they cocked up with a nasty resignation letter that they released to the public hours later.

    • @BangkokVoiceCoach
      @BangkokVoiceCoach  Год назад +3

Tour buses are fairly unpleasant places, but “flying in” Woolf bf regarded as very starry behaviour. I was in a band when decisions were made behind my back without my consent and it’s really horrible. I left and, fifteen years later, they are still doing the sand drudgery tours - but driving themselves!!

Worth noting that some sources also reported there was a long period of tension between Tarja's husband/manager, Marcelo Cabuli, and Tuomas. Cabuli was the person who was encouraging her to go solo originally. From her apparent surprise at being fired the way she was, I'd guess that she didn't really want to leave. Since the two are still married, though, nothing much has been said about that.

And I even get it, when everybody is loud and having fun (drinking), but you are the one person that has to stay sober and keep your mouth shut, because you need to be singing on stage tomorrow. But THAT comes with her job. If she did not like it she was free to leave. But then I'd say....leave and don't be the 'GHOST LOVE'.

As for the split. Well there are 3 sides to every story. Mine. Yours and the truth.
A married woman who knows the importance of protecting herself and her voice learned that her bandmates abuse alcohol and won't even protect her from a rabid drunk who jumped the stage and tried to sexually assault her. It was a road manager and security he put into action that got her away from the nut.
Geez why would you object to touring in a bus with those men.
Refusing dates no one bothered to tell you abourt, that you never agreeed to? I don't what you have for work boundaries but those crosss mine as well. Notice needs to be given.
A reminder she was not an employee, or a recent hire. She was a founder. She has the same 1/3 claim as Tuomas and Emppu.
That she never sought an extra writers credit though she could have should tell you something.
Ih and that manager who was only a few years with the band was Marcello Cabuli. They celebrated 20 years last month as husband and wife. They are parents to Naiomi (11). Considering no one.else was protecting her interesrs, ruddy good thing someone did.

Yes, indeed, but the band fired HER!! Why didn’t she walk away!? I have every sympathy for her. The same crap happened to me, on a much smaller level, and I’ll tell you, band members often have little or no loyalty. There’s just a whole lot of jealousy. 🥹

@@BangkokVoiceCoach She was planning to leave the band after one more album and a tour if I remember correctly, and she informed the band members one or two years in advance. I don't know why they couldn't leave it at that or tell her right then that they don't want to work with her anymore. She needed to rest her voice and that was impossible with their work schedule. Also, they accused her of not wanting to travel with them... She was the only girl among all the men so I think it was logical she didn't want to. She needed her space and privacy. They could've handled that way better. 🤷🏻‍♀
Anyway, thanks for this reaction! I enjoyed your analysis. Keep it up! ✌🏼

@@BangkokVoiceCoach she had agreed to one more album and tour. She planned to leave after that. She was already working on her 1st album a dark Christmas album.
As for why she put up with them and also never publicly called them out? Patience of a saint. Far better person than I.
Note those 2 songs were not.released until years later. She neither confirms nor denies whom they're about. But it's pretty self evident.
Also the incident was apparently in Mexico.
Keep in mind all Finnish men have to do national service. And Emppu does karate. Neither stepped up to help.
Now yes it is also evident that Tuomas had feelings for his leading lady. To which her not being in love with/married to him was an issue.
It is confirmed that Marcello and Tarja called Tuomas to their room for a heart to heart discussion. The 2 principles have said nothing regarding the subject. Marcello put it out in the response to the open letter. No one has confirmed or denied his claims as to the discussion. However speculation is it was a warning to back off. She is married and Tuomas was not welcome.
Like I said before 3 sides.
None of us were privy to the conversation.
But it hardly seems divaish for a married woman not to want to be in a state of undress around her male band mates or to rather have space for her and her husband.
One other point you get if others don't. How many famous musicians who abused drugs and alcohol especially blew out their voices for lack of care?
Tarja has a good ritual for before and after the show to get ready, then recover from the show taking a few hours. Time she needs privacy for.
      Sounds reasonable enough.
But as you see they were young. Ranging from 26 to 29 then. Maturity and no doubt having wives explaining it to them helped them understand better Tarja's needs.
Like I said relations seem to be civil but cool.
Though this did not stop Tuomas, the label, Tarja and Tapio Wilska ex NW roadie/guest vocalist and current Finnish metal God from teaming up with the road crew band (Crewwish) to put out a 2nd album during lockdown.
      Since they could not tour.
During this show the opening track is from Once, Dark Chest of Wonders. Tarja and Tapio reunited for the album to sing duet.
They did so again for Crewish, also Tuomas did the keyboards. Sent all that via email from respective studios.Crewish called their album Twice. 😁 just the kind of person Tarja is to reach out and help those in need.
Tuomas' mother was the village's piano teacher. Taught Tarja as well. And yes she can play and compose as well. When Tuomas' mother passed a few years ago Tarja was 1st to reach out. She lost her own mother in 2002. There is a concert from Germany iirc shortly after, you can see she is fighting tears during the show. Empathy she has tons of.
Just goes to show her character.
Also I don't know the accuracy but her and Marcello are reported to be in the mid 9 figure range for networth. Sound business investments.
Their primary home is in Spain. But they lived in his native Argentina and they now have a home in the British Carribean on Antigua. Her new project 10 years in the making was filmed there with Torsten Stenzel and world class guitarists Like Joe Santorini.
So she really has done well for herself. She makes music for passions sake. Her.auto biography is called singing in my blood. Well her little brother Toni and daughter Naomi seem to have it in their blood too, so I believe it.

Money/personalities/philosophy - take your pick. Once Tarja married, there were two managers - Tarja's husband managed her, and Nightwish had their own manager - recipe for disaster. Philosophy - Tarja wanted to do fewer venues to larger audiences, did not want months-long bus trips across America playing iffy places to smaller crowds, the band thought you need to do that to build your following - can't have a lead singer who refuses to tour the US. Personalities - the relationship between Tuomas, band leader, and Tarja, was complicated - we'll leave it at that. In the end, it was the right decision, for many reasons, but the execution of it was handled rather poorly, and is still a matter of controversy to this day. Fortunately, both Nightwish and Tarja thrived in the ensuing years

Actually, I'm with Tarja! Promoters making us do old school audience-building across the US and Canada in a minibus is what made me leave my band. It was hard after building up something over six years but I'm glad I did. They replaced me and, guess what, twenty years later they are still building up an audience across US and Canada except even smaller venues!!
