Thank You Detour. It is a struggle to know what grant jurors want so I appreciate your input!

As I was listening to your tips I was thinking "oh good, I do that". But then I went back and reread the drafts I saved to the questions for my own grant application and I am now cringing. I think I have so much to say and am not practiced enough in how to say it, but also think I have too much to say - when I have to cull it down to a low word count - I struggle with an elegant way to express a shortened response. Thank you for your tips. I think I'm going to take your advice and find someone who is willing and able to read my applications before submitting them.

I think that as long as you are detailed and convey a story that connects with the juror on a human level, it will be good. I think i tune in to applications that really explain their work in a way that easily connects with someone someone rather than being mystic or too high-level. that might work for museums and residencies but i want to know how the funding will impact the potential for future work.

This is very insightful! Is there a specific types of artworks that resonate more with jurors? How do jurors come to a collective decision when deciding the grantees?

I would say anything impactful. It's not so much the type or the visual but how unique is it and how does it impact the world/community. Does it communicate a new and/or necessary message. We usually have few artist we agree on and then we have to fight for the ones we think deserve it. but usually there are enough that we agree on that end up at the top.

@@iamdetour thank you for the reply. I was passed up by a couple of grants and wanted to know how I could've improved.

@@kashifmoore sometimes its just competitive and there's nothing you can do. sometimes there a a few artists that are doing similar work and your application is now one of many in a pile of other artists. Sometimes its the jurors that like blue one day and red the next. you can never know exactly. As long as your figuring out ways to show why the work you do is important, you have a chance to make a connection with a juror.

Do we also have the Art grants in SOUTH AFRICA? Besides our grants from the Dpt of Arts and culture?
And if yes what are the requirements?

I would just google "Art grants in the UK" or change out "UK" with you specific city. from there it should lead you in the right direction.
