  • Regarding this delicacy, I also heard a story from my grandfather: in the past, there was not enough food, it was not easy to eat a tofu meal. One person helped to make the fire while eating tofu. A piece of Tofu was slipped of his hand and dropped in the ashes. He was also reluctant to throw it away, so he picked it up, patted the ashes and put it in his mouth. It turned out that this piece of tofu was more fragrant than the one in his hand, and later there was wood ash tofu. Daozhen wood ash tofu is a special product of Daozhen Ge Lao Minority People in Miao Autonomous County of Guizhou Province.

      Probably helps there's not a fridge or pantry of junk food so she learns to eat whatever mom cooks or nothing else. Love this style of living and raising a child.

    I had a home garden just sitting there but after watching her, seeing her eat healthy, I started to cultivate my land and I have to say it's such a beautiful to sow a seed, nurture it, water it, tend to and watch and grow.       In the UK you can get cheese covered in Ash & in USA,France & Spain...maybe other countries too.

    So interesting! I know that there's a type of German cheese that is coated with ash and fermented over time, but I never heard of ash tofu before. It looks delicious though, that crunch sound is very nice.

    That was fascinating! I like the legend in the description. Can you use any plant ash or does cypress infuse a particular flavour that is preferred? Once you have used this method, will it preserve the tofu for later use? How long will the tofu be preserved in this state?

      Cheeses are often prepared with Ash too. It helps to neutralizes acidity when ripening. It is also edible

    The toasting stage using the hot ash must give special aroma and texture to the tofu. Otherwise she wouldn't put that much work into it and would just fry it like normal.
