    I think the Wii U and 3DS generation is so special because Nintendo tried. At the start of the Wii U and 3DS' life, Nintendo launched the systems with very safe, simple games that were not system sellers. They were immediately forced to try new things, something which particulary stuck for the Wii U during its lifetime. Games like Animal Crossing New Leaf, Super Mario Maker, Splatoon and Bayonetta showed that Nintendo wasn't afraid to experiment. These days Nintendo puts their retro titles on a subscription, and sells games that require a bunch of updates to actually have content.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад +23

      I couldn't have said it any better than you. Nintendo was really trying with the 3DS and Wii U. They had to. It was amazing being a part of it for all those years.

    • @ollie1
      @ollie1 Год назад +5

      @xid The reason Nintendo is doing these various business practices is because of the high sales of the Switch. They get confident, and slowly put less and less effort into their products because they know that it will be easy money. Having paid online, day 1 patches and expansion passes wouldn't attract people to buy a Wii U or Switch. Even to this day we still see gamers complain about all of what you mentioned, no-one likes it.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад +1

      @xid I have mixed feelings about DLC. For the most part, I’m not a fan. Having to pay extra for more of the same game is dumb. But I like having that additional part of the game to play. I’ve only ever purchased DLC once and it was for Breath of the Wild. No other game has ever convinced me to but into it.

    • @ollie1
      @ollie1 Год назад +3

      @xid It's true that people want Nintendo to get with the times and modernise their services, but I hardly think that's why people would buy a Switch. Sure, DLC, expansions, etc, can be attractive to a customer, but I really don't think that the Switch would attract hardcore games because of it. People bought the switch because of the games. The marketing is good, third party support is massive, and the system is easy to understand. The Switch is lacking in so many features the Wii U, and even the 3DS had.
      Tears of the Kingdom being $70 is only happening because Nintendo believe they can get away with it due to Zelda being a massive IP. Pikmin 4 is still $60 because it isn't guaranteed to sell as well.

    • @ollie1
      @ollie1 Год назад

      @xid So the Wii U games sold well because the Switch has DLC, Expansion passes, Day 1 Patches and Paid online? And that's how Nintendo sees it? The Wii U ports sell well because they're bought by people who don't own a Wii U, and haven't played the games. These games are high quality games that being launched on a console with 120mil+ sales.

I got a Wii U to play Mario Maker and Mario Kart 8 and pretty much only ever played those two games. The themes and badges let me customise it to feel like a reflection of myself. And I will forever love the streetpass feature. I wish the switch had something like that. It makes me feel like I’m connected to a whole community of other ppl. I only wish i had gotten into it sooner. I bought my first 3ds in 2016 but didnt really buy any proper games for it until 2019. I enjoyed the comment you made about feeling like we were "part of of something amazing, no-one paid attention to", being there for what I feel like was Satoru Iwata's real swan song (3DS included) to the industry feels special, I believe this era at Nintendo may never be replicated again. Satoru Iwatas time at Nintendo gave us things like The Weather Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, Miiverse, eShop/Virtual Console and even the menu music on Wii/Wii U and 3DS. Satoru Iwata was imprinted all of over this era at Nintendo and with his passing it feels very much like a different Nintendo. Satoru Iwata's quote "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.” is a great representation of what Nintendo felt like during the mid 00's and into 2010's. Nothing is more indicative of the large void where Iwata once stood than the Switch, lacking in almost everything creative that we saw from the previous generations, bland and stale it feels cold with no life, NSO with its subscription service (you will rent everything and own nothing). I am being a bit harsh because I do like my Switch, but I miss that magic we saw from the previous consoles and handhelds, and I am not a fan of where Nintendo seems to be going.
    My experience with the 3DS is one similar to yours but with less traveling, my job had me at the time working 12 hour rotating shifts (for context: I work at a tank-farm where we store different products/chemicals in large tanks) and when it was my time to work nights my 3DS was a great companion to help me pass the time inbetween rounds, line-ups/transfers or just staying awake. I beat a lot of games over the years tucked away in the unit truck waiting for my next round (It still gets lugged around with me even though I have a Switch and Steam Deck, I guess I just can't quite let it go). Looking back on my childhood I had a Gameboy, GB Color, GB Advance and a DS as a older teenager but I never logged the kind of hours I did with my 3DS, it really holds a special place in my heart and I am sad its coming to a close.
    Great video once again! Keep at it and im sure your channel will explode!

      I agree with you, it feels like a different Nintendo after Satoru Iwata passed away. I too love my Switch and play it almost everyday, but it lacks the life the past Nintendo consoles had.
      That's really cool that you played it so much at work! It really was similar to my experience with it. I always told myself, if I'm not physically on the planet, I'm not going to be looking at spreadsheet or doing emails. I spent hours playing my 3DS on flights and waiting in airports (even though I was physically on the earth.) I considered the airport an extension of the flight.

    My family had some hard times during the 2010s so until 2018 our newest console was the Wii. What little we had spare would be invested in that system so even though the Switch was out, we got a second hand Wii U for Christmas 2018 as most of the appealing switch library at the time were Wii U ports - meaning we could get games which were now relevant on the Switch for dirt cheap on Wii U - and we could still take advantage of everything we already have. Things have since improved and we have a switch but I still use my Wii U on the regular, I hold it very precious to me. The Wii U 3ds era was Nintendo's best by far and it is a shame they don't feel that way anymore. As for what we can all do to support the Wii U and 3ds into the future it is simple; KEEP playing your Wii U and 3ds online regularly as the data of play time and titles is still collected by Nintendo. It is the last and best way we can send meaningful information back to them to CONTINUE to support those systems and possibly work something like them into the future plans of the company. Both of these I think were/are the best modern systems I’ve owned. I really blew up the 3DS especially but my WiiU probably got the most attention from a tv console since the N64 for me and by far the 3DS beat the other handhelds I had over my life. I’m not a king but I have 52 physical games for the 3DS and 62 downloadable things. I was probably one of the very few who used the 3D for nearly the whole time. 2012-2021 for me. Both were the first consoles I bought myself as well. I thought my horizons were mostly expanded as they could be until these 2 systems.

    Great video, I share the same sentiments. I was an early adopter of both systems too. If the next Switch or piece of Nintendo hardware had a processor in the dock as well as the system, or the capacity for wireless HDMI / local streaming, the could bring Wii U and 3DS/DS games using the TV for the top screen and the “Switch” portion for the bottom screen, much like how the Wii U handles DS. Of course, we’re talking about Nintendo here but I can dream. Maybe one day we’ll get a 3rd party clone type system capable of running those games. Until then we’ll have to play our legacy hardware or use emulation.

It's a crime and insult to humanity that Nintendo trashed one of the most groundbreaking and revolutionary forms of gaming to ever exist for a terrible overpriced 6-7 year old piece of $300 hardware that has had 0 improvements yet stayed the same price even with inflation. The 3ds was fantastic but they canned it because they realized they could profit much more with much less.

    I agree with every sentiment in this video. After Iwata passed, Nintendo changed for the worse. I felt like they completely stopped all attempts of fan service, in exchange for massive profits. I guess Nintendo is a more financially sound company these days, but because of it my love for Nintendo died with the WiiU. I own the Switch, but in all honesty, there's no "Nintendo magic" . I loved all the creative ideas with the 3DS and WiiU. Street Pass, Mii Verse, Mii Plaza etc. Back then I felt connected with other people, and it felt fun taking your 3DS with you. These days my friends are just ghosts in a friend list showcasing which games they are playing. There's no interaction, no connection with other people, and there's no incentive to bring your console with you. A lot of creative ideas died with the Switch. And honestly, it doesn't even feel like Nintendo hardware anymore. There's no character to the device/OS, there's no menu music, no themes, nothing to make the device feel fun and playful. It feels like the console development and design was outsourced completely without the intervention of Nintendo, and to this day, I only feel like Mario Odyssey defined the console. Breath of the Wild was still a WiiU game, and then we are left ports, sequals and a subscription model that leaves a bad after taste. I love the 3DS and WiiU. and currently I am super excited about the Steam Deck and Valve. :)

    • @NeanderMeander

      It does feel like Nintendo changed after Iwata passed. It just seems like they are more business focused rather than gamer focused. I loved that Iwata had gamers in mind at all times. Nintendo really had to try with the 3DS and Wii U. They weren't performing, so they had to get creative and offer some great games and experiences. The 3DS in particular went above and beyond to get us to buy one. Being able to connect with people was awesome! I loved seeing that green light blinking on the side whenever I took it out of the house. I might need to get a Steam Deck. I saw that they went on sale this week. Is it worth picking up?

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade Год назад +2

      @@NeanderMeander yeah! It was such a treat whenever the green blinking light was on when you came home after commuting! I loved the feature of the Street Pass. And I was always excited about how their Mii looked 😁. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Steam Deck. Don't know how much you are of a PC gamer, but it is a really easy way to get into PC gaming. I guess the biggest problem really is that performance/battery optimizations are on the user. It's not particularly hard. And there are great tools to play around with. You have the freedom to play games the way you want to play them. The issue is that people max out games and complain about the 1.5h battery life. For me however, my most demanding game is Cyberpunk. I get 3h when it's locked to 30fps.
      But yeah I get a lot of enjoyment from emulation. I get around 8h playing 2D games like SNES, GBA etc. It's awesome to have all your games on one comfortable and portable device. And you can practically play all games from your childhood up to this day(with some tinkering). 🙂 I have the 64GB variant with a 512GB SD Card. I am very happy with that one. I have 56 games installed. 5 of them being 50GB+ games modern AAA Titles. The rest are older AAA games, indies and of course emulation (which isn't counted with the 56 games) :)

    What I hate about this, is that this technology will likely never be reused. Nintendo really innovated with the glassesless 3D effect. It could have gone soo much farther if they chose to support it. Many games were designed with the 3D effect in mind and I have never grown tired of it. Its an amazing effect. They can also be played 2D if you want to. While the Switch has similar motion controls to the Wii, its not a console dedicated to motion controls. So that tech will not advance much. Overall, I feel like the switchs' success has made nintendo neglect their more niche techology. Doesnt help they dont care for game preservation. They could easily to afford to keep the eshop open for as long as nintendo makes money. Which they do all the time.

      I think most of the reason why the eShop's closing on Wii U and 3DS is *because* Nintendo's not really making money with them anymore. It probably costs them more to keep the servers running (and the security technology needed for protecting payment info) than they're making from consoles that only a fraction of their audience is playing anymore.

Thankfully online is still intact for most games, and some games like Pokémon and Mario Kart 7, still have decent online communities. I'm sure the closure will bring more people back at least in the short term to give a proper send off. I understand why Nintendo is doing this, but I still think it's not fair. The Virtual Console situation really bothers me. The discourse around the Virtual Console in the WiiU days was that people were tired of having to buy the same games every time a new console was released. Why should you have to buy SMB on WiiU if you already bought it on Wii? People wanted their games to follow their profile to the new console, like what happens on Xbox and PlayStation. Nintendo knew they couldn’t get away with making people buy SMB for the 5th time when the Switch released so they moved over to the subscription model. Now they don’t have to worry about you buying it once and moving it across console generations with your profile. XB and PS have their game subscription services too, but they still let you buy the games if you want to. Nintendo no longer gives you that option. The subscription model has been the answer to their prayers. If the other two manufacturers had this business model, they’d be vilified. For some reason, Nintendo gets away with it.

    • @NeanderMeander

    It really conflicts me tho. The Wii U was my go to console during the pandemic. I bought it long ago as a Splatoon bundle and i loved playing the heck of it. Now, as it comes to a close, its just really a big blow for me. I'll not see some of my friends there again. But I'm glad that there's an option to home-brew the 3DS and Wii U. Splatoon in the Wii U just feels so unique even if Splatoon 2 and 3 has some better clothing, weapons and stories. The GamePad is so intuitive to know where your enemy is and you can play minigames with it while waiting for a match to come. Another is that if you dont want to spend big bucks for Switch Online, thats when you can just use the Wii U for some online gaming.
    As for the 3DS, I really don't mind homebrewing it as i already have quite the collection for it and i dont want to pay extravagant prices for games anymore. The FE Fates edition is the first Nintendo console I had ever owned and it have made me to become the Nintendo gamer i had today. If it wasn't for the 3DS, i wouldn't even have the other consoles that came before and after it. Literally saved up my high school lunch money just to line up and get it lol but it was really worth the wait!
    As we wait for a Switch 2, I hope Nintendo can continue to innovate and provide the unique experiences we had experienced with the Wii U and the 3DS. The Switch just doesn't feel right for me after owning it new for 7 years. It's odd that the Wii U and the 3DS are getting much more of my time lol.

I would commonly replay games like Link between worlds, Luigi's mansion dark moon, and Mario 3D world and constantly play the multiplayer aspect of New super mario bros 2 with my friends and cousin.
    I got the Wii U in 2014 due to Mario kart 8 and Super smash bros. It's not my favourite Nintendo home console and the switch has improved upon a lot of its flaws. However, I still had a ton of fun playing online with friends and it introduced me to some of my very favourite franchises. I probably wouldn't have gotten into Pikmin, Bayonetta, Donkey Kong Country and Metroid without the Wii U. As you said, the Nintendo eshop was also far more convenient for accessing classic and digital games compared to the switch's online service. The sad thing about the Nintendo Switch online service is that once they inevitably shut down the servers, you won't even be able to play the games that you have sunk probably hundreds of dollars into over the years. Are they just going to let them be apps for free? If they do that but they haven't told anyone, then people will have been paying all of that money for nothing. The worst part of the eshops for the Wii U and 3DS closing is that they can easily just turn it back on. They did it for the game codes, and a company like Nintendo could easily keep it up. They actively chose to do it because that means they will get more money when they make a crappy $60 port. The eshop isn't even the only thing Nintendo is doing bad on. Nintendo is just not the same company anymore, I only wish it could stay as it was.

      Yeah, it's disheartening that the Online Service is the only official place we can play classic Nintendo games. I wouldn't hold my breath that Nintendo will let us keep those apps for free. When they come out with a new console, they'll implement the subscription model again on it and shut down the only apps. They know people will play to rent those games instead of own them. They proved it with the Switch. I just hope they will give us some sort of compilation we can buy in the future. I really dislike subscription services in general. There bunch of games in there I'll most likely never play that I'm paying access for.

    I've subscribed to you after watching this video of yours. It is really well made. I've grown up with a 3ds and ps vita along with a psp and gba and x box 360 and ds. I got my first 3ds when I was a kid and am now a teenager... I suppose the saying applies... how time flies. I'm from a third world country so it's definitely been difficult to get 3ds games so my 3ds mostly acted as a... a ds... r4 cards. The only game I had was smash 4 and recently now kid icarus uprising and now I'll mod it so a lot more. I'm planning on getting a new 3ds in the future to play the more powerful games and an now trying to get more physical games. I've started with kid icarus uprising (my first physical 3ds game) and I've managed to find someone selling a copy of shantae and the pirates curse, Kirby, zelda, monster hunter and others for under 60 bucks so guess I'm a collector now huh? Could you suggest me more games? Also someone selling a mint condition (box is still wrapped in plastic) wii u for 100 bucks. I already own it but should I get it? Also, also, I wanna make a video like yours! How do you do cinematography like that?

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад

      Thanks for the sub! I really appreciate it! It sounds like you're really getting off the ground with your collecting. That's awesome! I would say only buy the games you can afford. I've really dialed back my game collecting as game prices have been rising like crazy lately. But that's okay. Sooner or later I know the opportunity to get them will come. A brand new Wii U for $100 sounds like a really good deal. How badly do you want it?
      l mainly watch movies and take notes on how they light their scenes and move the camera. I also watch quite a bit of behind the scenes footage of movies. That has given me a ton of insight on how to film my videos. A lot of it has to do with how you frame your shots. Then you need to get some camera equipment. This doesn't have to be expensive. Quite a few of my videos were made with an inexpensive used Canon camera with the included kit lens. Now my videos are made with a Sony FX30 and a handful of lenses. But I've only upgraded because I thought I could make better videos with the new camera. If I were you I would start small and try to spend the least amount of money possible. Even a phone can produce a really good RUclips video. If you have any other questions, send me a dm on instagram or email me. I'm happy to help you out in whatever way I can.

    Solid points. Playing all these games years before Switch owners was amazing. I don’t blame Nintendo for reselling these awesome games on the Switch, they already were sitting on gold. But, it has made the Switch feel a little flat for Wii U owners. You forgot to mention Mario Maker was better on the Wii U too.

      You're right! Mario Maker was better on the Wii U. The Gamepad was awesome for that game. But yes, I agree, Nintendo was sitting on gold with those Wii U games. They made a ton of money from what they had already made. Good business decision for Nintendo. Not so good for Wii U owners.

    9:00 - I don't think that's true, they could've pulled a Virtual Boy and discontinue the Wii U after a couple of years.
    Or alternatively, and more realistically, abandon the Wii U and focus solely on the 3DS, which is what Sony did to the PS Vita.
    But no, they stuck around and released good games.
    If you want to have them on Switch, yeah it sucks that you have to pay full price again, but time is finite, those years in which you played those Wii U games for the first time are never coming back, so I think it's a good thing that we can look back at them fondly because of the games we were playing at the time.
    And that's something that only happened because Nintendo cared enough to deliver good games to their loyal fans.

    • @NeanderMeander
      @NeanderMeander  Год назад

      I like this comment and brings up some good points. Thank you for sharing them. The only difference between the Virtual Boy and PS Vita is that those were those companies secondary focus. The Virtual boy was third in line behind the Super Nintendo and Game Boy. Of course they would discontinue it for not selling well. The Vita was second in line behind the PS3 and later the PS4. Discontinuing the Wii U would have been like Sony discontinuing the PS4 and Nintendo discontinuing the Super Nintendo. The Wii U was their main home console and the major focus for them at the time. The 3DS was secondary to it. Remember, the 3DS struggled too until Nintendo dropped the price. Luckily it was successful and carried Nintendo through that generation. They were trying to sell Wii U’s with really good game releases. It didn’t work. Nobody cared or played them, except for those who stuck by their side during this tough time. Because of this, they decided to port those great games over to the newest console and treat them as if they were new Switch games. This helped with their release schedule and made it look like the Switch was some sort of ultimate Nintendo machine, when in reality it was getting that success from games that already existed. Again, it was great those games were given a second chance, but those who were upset seeing those games again were justified being so. At least Mario Maker and Splatoon got sequels.
      After talking about it so much on the last few days, I’ve realized it really doesn’t matter anymore. I was so young when it happened, it really mattered to me back then. Now, I’m coming to peace with it all.

    I grew up playing the Wii at my friend's house. My older brother had a Gameboy that we played Tetris on. I got my first Nintendo 3ds when I was 10. I was so excited about it. I remember losing my stylus, and used a Bobby pin instead. Little did I know that it would scratch up my touch screen. The ot thing I felt bad about was that I didn't have as many games as my friends did, and felt I missed out on the fad. My little brother had a Nintendo ds lite for a while, and I loved plaing Mario Kart on it. It unfortunately broke after a while. I finally bought a refurbished Nintendo 3ds XL a few years ago, and transferred data from my old one to the new one. Mt family bought the Switch when I was 18, and we honestly loved it. My little brother plays on it all the time. I still have the old 3ds for sentimental reasons. I felt super sad when finding out the eShop was going obsolete. But it's an "out with the old and in with the new" scenario I guess. I'm definitely gonna miss the 3ds era.

    For me it was Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, ORAS, Sun and Moon, as well as Kirby Triple Deluxe.
    I was 7-8 at the time. All I had to worry about was completing another level on 3D land while watching Adventure Time on a Summer's afternoon.
    The 3DS truly felt magical. The ambiance of bothe the Home menu theme as well as the System Setting music felt nice to relax to.
    While the Switch OLED is great, it feels a tad bit...corporate. Like it's a bit too clean and sharp. Don't get me wrong, since I've gotten older I've gotten into other franchises aside form Mario and Pokemon, but nothing can quite replace the feeling of opening up my 3DS and playing after school, in the waiting room at the doctor's office, in the car, or wherever else I was.
    I hope Nintendo can get back to that time.

    Regarding the solution to the switch. i think all that would be necessary for it to work is that if Nintendo made a hub, a receiver of some sort that instead of just displaying the switch's content on a tv, allows you to stream the main content of the switch to the tv and have the switch display secondary content on its own screen. We would basically have another Wii U
