OMG this camera is a beast
David Hrzenjak Yes it is!
What it’s OMG ?
Just look at your face, David
You're much delighted reviewing this camera😅👍🙌
Yes, I am!
Obviously he must be happy to have this beast in his hands,😅
Beauty of a camera!
The ending was just amazing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome camera
Bravo David. Thank you!
Thanks David for a great review!
Kennon Nilsen Thanks for watching!
For anybody who doesn’t know him, David Bergman can take amazing concert photos with a Brownie.
Haha, thanks! But certainly nice to have great gear like this. :)
Camera for life
Wonderful video, Adorama!! Lovely work as well, David!! Looks like I'll need to save up and upgrade to this model in the future, your video totally sold me on it.
Thanks!
As someone who regularly shoots at 51,200 the full stop increase to 102,400 will be nice. Waiting to see the noise levels from test shots at that ISO setting.
Love this camera. Great review. First time I have lusted for a new camera since the 5d2/3.
Jenny Gavin-Wear Thanks!
yessssss..can't wait to get my hands on this camera!!! :))))) Love your videos David.
Tony Pags Thanks!
Super cool-! No.1 photographer camera
Perfect🥺
that is friggen amazing
We do about 1/3 of our business in sports and I am loving this thing
I have been using the 5D MK III but I need one of these for me
Karl Mullings Once you shoot 16fps, it’s hard to go back.
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow!!! Thanks for the review ...I love it. Are you planning on doing a slightly deeper dive? Hope so!!
Todd Hope so at some point. Maybe submit a question at www.AskDavidBergman.com and I’ll answer!
1DX MKII user. I’m loving the silent shooting mode and touch screen for everything instead of just the live focus. You didn’t mention the file sizes? Also, when is out please? Great video, thanks for sharing. Gary
Gary Gough Thanks for watching. Hmm file size isn’t something I pay too much attention to anymore. The new raw files (cr3) are about the same size as the cr2 on the mark 2 since it’s about the same megapixels. The biggest difference is if you shoot HEIF files, which are about half the size of JPEGs.
It should be available by mid-Feb. Pre-orders are now taken on most sites.
David Bergman thanks for clarifying. Cheers
Love that “lock on” AF! Hope the next mirror less also have that AF feature!
You need to warn watchers to have a tissue handy to wipe the drool.
5:40 The high-ISO performance is insane 😱
Right?
Beast ❤
I find it hilarious that so many Sony/mirrorless folks are hating on this camera!
To each their own.
That’s not true. I am Nikon shooter DSLR and 9M2 shooter ML and I absolutely do not hate this camera. Being a gear nerd I wished I had one, but it makes no sense to me investing in a third system. If Canon offers to replace all my F-Mount gear with equivalent Canon equipment: so what, why not 😘
Nice camera! I'm a Nikon DSLR guy, but can appreciate top Canon.
The best
I love my 1DX mark ii. Curious when the EOS R Pro will come out with dual slots, weather protection and decent burst rate. The RF glass seems to be where Canon is putting their research dollars. Happy with the EF glass I own, but I believe the future is RF glass.
No doubt the RF glass is amazing. But I'm happy to see Canon is also still committed to the DSLR format that us sports, action, wildlife shooters know and love.
My take on that is that Canon has made several mkII or mkIII versions of their EF glass. They probably consider that they cannot make anymore significant improvements, just very minor stuff. The 500mm F4 LII I have is insanely sharp for my wildlife shots and it is 2-3# lighter than the LI. I only buy L glass and they are all keepers........going to safe for 1DX mkIII as I need the low light 12,800 ISO here we come!
Could you explain the deep learning lock on and how it works? do i set the focus point and it will always lock onto the head there and make sure it's in focus or do i have to set the af to full auto? or is it basically the servo mode?
Amazing beast!!! Now give us the same in a 7D mark III Canon!!!
Yes
Public Demand
I agree
There will be no 7d mIII unfortunately.
Amazing content! Is there a certain setting that needs to be on for the AF sensor to be activated? Mine doesn't move with my finger so I'm very worried as to have bought a faulty one!
Would all frames be in focus when you shoot 16fps or 20fps?
The focus point button only works with the Screen, not the viewfinder, correct? I have this camera and love it but I think the focus point slider button only works with the view screen on. Please let me know if I'm wrong and how to fix it. thanks.
My question: is this camera RAW image quality better than cinema raw light from c200 or c500 mk2?
Thanks David for the introduction. When you were trying to fill the buffer demo what kind of files you were shooting with full size raw? or something else?
Basem Barakat raw plus jpeg
@@DavidBergmanPhoto Amazing
Good morning David, loving the specs and the silent shutter on this new camera. The only question I have is the size of the sensor. How is it better than the previous sensor on the mark II given that it’s slight smaller?
Sal A. It’s roughly the same megapixels, but is a completely new sensor. Everything around it is faster so quality has been improved by just about every measure - frames per second, high ISO, rolling shutter, buffer, etc.
is 20.1MP large enough to get clean large prints of live concert shots? Would it be too grainy with the higher ISOs needed to get low light concert photos?
I promised myself I would not spend this insane amount for another camera but you may have changed my mind. I shoot high school and college football and 12000 ISO would be sweet.
Wanda Willoughby For my concert shooting, every extra stop helps!
Holy crap! This camera is insane. Good to see Canon doing this. But, I can't stop wondering, what about the about the mirrorless cameras?
The mirrorless version of this will probably be out for the 2024 Olympics.
Geffá Oliveira Canon is committed to mirrorless as well. But I’m glad that the DSLR is alive and thriving!
Who cares.....
EOS RII & EOS RS will come this year too
ha i have a Fuji XT2 and I have a burst rate of 30FPS i have proper 4K ! dual card slots which are the same type its lighter cost less and together with capture One i can have clean RAW files at over 6400
why do I need a beast like this I sold my Canon 5DMk2 and lots of L series glass to move to Fuji I wont be going back anytime soon
Does the electronic shutter fix some of the warping from fast moving subjects in video mode?
Michael Wigle All electronic shutters made today could show some rolling shutter in some situations due to the way the light is collected and moved off the sensor. The new Digic X processor in this camera is the fastest ever, which drastically minimizes the effect.
i cant wait to get mine going to sell my 1DX mark ii im looking tom pre order asap
www.adorama.com/ica1dxm3k.html?kbid=66043
For those of us that like to back button focus, is that going to be a problem with the new AF point selector being attached to the rear AF on button?
You can turn that function off if you prefer to use the joystick (or not move at all). But there's another option too - I set the * (star) button (right next to it) to autofocus as well. On my previous cameras, I did that because I sometimes push the wrong buttony accident. But this way you can use the star button when you want to shoot without moving the point, and simply move over to the smart controller button if you're shooting something where you might want to move it around.
Nice
You're the first guy to explain the magic autofocus; thanks. But I'm still a little confused. . .on the AF menu page 4 do we select Auto? Or Initial AF pt set for (all those symbols). I experimented with both on some seagulls tonight and seemed to do better in Auto, but how does the camera know what to stay on? Does it still use the single AF point I selected? It seems to, but it also highlights some other points and shakes my confidence that it knows which bird to track. Thanks!
Does anyone know which retailer is most likely to fulfill orders and deliver first?
Bergman is the best.
So whats the go
Should i make a purchase of this 2020 1dxmark 3
Please let me know
Ekkie Mcfly I cant tell you how to spend your money. It really depends on what you shoot and if this body will help you to make better images and/or more money. For me, it’s a no brainer as this will be my primary action camera for years to come. If you do want to pre-order, you can get it here - www.adorama.com/ica1dxm3k.html
I'd like to start a petition that we can all sign for Canon to let you keep the camera
Dion White I love this idea! :)
🔥🔥🔥💯
What!?! No crop? And that new AF-on button, and complete coverage on sensor? ... can you also do that in one shot mode?... how many mgpxls?
mikewinburn 20.1 megapixels
hi must wanna ask if the bodys identical with mark ii ? coz i need to buy L plate to match the new one many thanks
Maybe. It depends on which one you're using. I would wait until the companies get this in their hands and can build a proper plate.
How do you get 5.5 k in settings ?
David, are the images you shared at 12,800 ISO look great. Are they in Jpeg format? If so was there any post processing in Lightroom or PS? How much Noise reduction did you need? What picture style settings did you use?
Very nice review. I shoot HS Football under lousy lights and 6400-12800 ISO on my 1Dx Mark II is where I shoot at.
I shot RAW and did the conversion with a (beta) version of Canon's Digital Photo Pro software. I bumped up exposure on most of the images about 2/3 stop. Standard picture profile. Noise reduction is at the default setting for DPP, which is 10 and 10 for luminance noise and chrominance noise.
I have the Mark ii. To my knowledge, most of the upgrades on the mark iii are on the video side. Is it worth the upgrade for a photographer like me? i'm ready to leap!
How many stops dynamic range? HEIF (or however it’s called correctly)? What about rolling shutter using electronic shutter? Or is the Sony a9 and a9M2 still the only one camera having NO rolling shutter in silent mode?
14 stops of DR in Video Mode. I think this will be the Same for Pictures
A9 isnt a global shutter, it has a rolling shutter and the read out is at roughly 160th.
Roland Rick Roland Rick HEIF is still pretty new and I honestly don’t know too much about it yet. I’m sure more info will come out as people start to shoot that format. As for rolling shutter, all electronic shutters have some form of rolling shutter that will show in certain situations. But with the new Digic X processor, the speed that the data is pulled off the sensor is much faster so you won’t see it very often.
@@DavidBergmanPhoto Apple is also moving to the HEIF Format (and the next Generation of it). So Canon was pretty innovative with this camera!!!!
OMG 12800 still usable, gotta buy it, im facing low light all the time
More than usable. Looks great!
Wow what a camera! How many megapixel capture is the sensor?
20.1MP Same as the Mark II
Kevin Hudson It’s 20.1 which is more than enough for most needs. I use bigger sensors (like the 5Ds) for portraits, but for fast action, I’d rather have the FPS speed.
Very cool, but now that I'm mirrorless (EOS R bodies) I'm hoping for an EOS R replacement with dual card slots.
Jared Ribic Canon is equally committed to mirrorless and have said there are more bodies on the way.
@@DavidBergmanPhoto - Cool! I can't wait to see what comes next!
Hi David, what about the normal silent shooting mode ? Is it more silent the the 1Dx ll ? and how many frames per second in silent mode ? Best Dirk
Dirk Michael Deckbar Hmm I have not compared the “normal” silent (mechanic shutter) modes yet. All that does is allow you to flip the mirror out of the way first, take a pic, and then put the mirror back when you’re ready. I will say that, to my ears, the high speed burst modes sounds a bit “smoother,” so it’s possible that the mirror mechanism is a bit quieter. Haven’t measured though. As for the new, silent electronic shutter? It’s 20fps with full auto focus. :)
David Bergman Thanks for your answer David ! I talked to another photographer and a Canon technician here in Germany and the say it is more quieter and with 8 fps faster then before. ( Silent Shutter Moder ) Not so important for rock concerts but for classic concerts 😂 a lot ! First 1Dx impossible, 1DX MKII much better looking for the MK III
The silent shutter mode is complete silent
were those high ISO shots jpeg or raw?
Thomas Tarner Raw and I boosted exposure about 2/3 stop, which normally brings in more noise.
just fyi, buffer is almost a minute non-stop at top speed. JPEG+RAW.
4k 60fps video with autofocus ??
PORAS MOTION PICTURES dual pixel AF at 30fps
30fps is Useless at this price.
Good news, even with auto focus you're still telling it what's important. Speaking of battery, with all that added electronic technology, battery technology might be the next thing that needs to catch up.
EVF for silent mode??? Or only in LV?
Roland Rick There is no EVF - it’s still a DSLR so you can shoot optically through the viewfinder (which I still prefer in most scenarios). In live view, you can choose to shoot electronic or mechanical shutter. The electronic one is completely silent.
@@DavidBergmanPhoto In live view/mirrorless mode, can you still shoot through the viewfinder?
@@DavidBergmanPhoto Hi David, thank you for your first impressions. Could you notice any rolling shutter effect while using the electronic shutter?
speedy43 No. It’s still a DSLR so the mirror has to flip out of the way to shoot with the electronic shutter. When the mirror is up, it has to black out the optical viewfinder.
ps Haven’t seen it yet but it’s not a global shutter (no one makes one yet that I know of) so there’s still potential for rolling shutter in certain situations. Canon put a lot of effort into the speed of the new Digic X processor so it pulls data off the sensor faster than ever before. That will drastically minimize the effect.
It's tough to drink champagne on a beer budget. But this camera makes me want to find find a way. Great review. Thanks a million David.
You're welcome!
There is a lot of hype on many channels, repeating themselves about Canon's refresher of the 1DXmII and it's game changing capabilities. I have been taking many pictures with spot on AF at concerts for the past 2 years with my A9 at low light and ISO 12800. There is nothing really revolutionary about the 1DXmIIl. One would expect these capabilities at a price tag of $6500.
Rene Staempfli Glad you found what works for you, but everyone is different. I love the mirrorless in certain situations, but many of us still prefer optical shooting for fast action. This is the new best-in-class DSLR and is not the same as shooting mirrorless through an EVF.
@@DavidBergmanPhoto ok, I agree with best in class DSLR.
The revolution is not the spot on AF at ISO 12800. The revolution is the AF system (with deep learning AI) itself and in a lot of innovative solutions (new AF Button with Touch, HEIF-format, Video capabilities, new Low-Pass Filter,...). They combined the best from two worlds in one camera and I am expecting that there will be new features unlocked by firmware Updates.
I think we have exciting times for all camera Users now
I'll be honest...I wanted at least 24MP from this. Having owned the 1Dx (sold it to make room for new models) and currently shooting the 5DS, its going to be hard for me to justify this at 20.1MP
5Ds can't handle high ISO though, so it all depends on your needs - resolution vs high ISO. For me the ability to use high ISO is a godsend, but I understand others have different needs
Agree with Tom. I’d much rather have the speed and high ISO. I’ve never had a paying client complain about files being to small.
Robert Fousch this 1DX at 12,800 is like my 5DS at 3200.
Sony will be watching this and will come out with a new camera within no time that is a step up. 😂
Nick Granville Competition is good for all of us!
David Bergman 100% agree. I have zero brand loyalty. Super pleased to see this IDX-iii it’s spec’d out, and looks amazing. Thanks
We will see
Now just to save up the cash for this piece of gear.
Dan Smith Me too! Hoping Canon forgets that I have this one. 😜
David Bergman , lucky 🍀 you
So it's like a slightly slower sony a9 but not mirrorless
All Cars United I love the mirrorless in certain situations, but many of us working pro action photographers still want to shoot optically with a “built-tough” body like this.
Actually 1D is faster. Sony only does 10fps in mechanical shutter. 1DX can do mirror up 20fps and with mirror 16fps with mechanical shutter.
Why slower? In mirrorless mode (Liveview) the 1Dx mkiii shoots 20 FPS up to more than 1000 Pictures raw+jpg simultaneously. Thats the same Speed as the Sony a9 MkII
I see you are wearing glasses while shooting. Do you ever NOT wear your glasses while shooting? If so, how can you do this? I have needed to start wearing glasses now (age related).
Whats it cost?

@@DavidBergmanPhoto oh my!!
Hubba hubba!
Good af tracking was spected for a flagship camera even a low end cameras has great af tracking in 2020. I dont see anything awesome that i was expecting for this camera. I see it like a 1dxmk2 on steroids. This is supposed to hold for the nes 4 to 5 years humm....
Ivan Kiefer I use the mark 2 just about every day and loved the af capabilities. But like all technology, they just keep making it better. Even having the occasional frame out of focus could mean missing “the” shot when you’re shooting sports action. This camera acquires focus even faster (so you don’t miss the most important first frame) and stays locked on more accurately. To me - and many working pro sports and action shooters - that’s worth every penny.
Please see other reviews where the AF is shown in Operation. That new AF is intelligent and beats all competition I actually know and tested...
I'll stick with my s1h thanks, becuase Dual Pixel Autofocus does NOT work when recording 60fps in RAW, 4K DCI
(full frame) or UHD - aka - if you buy this camera wanting 4K60fps
autofocus in full frame it ain't happening
Records 5.5K video in RAW at up to 60fps in full frame. Be warned this
is 2600Mbps at 60fps, so you will fill up a 256GB card in like 10
minutes 😅
The Faustian Man But you can get 4k60 with autofocus in cropped mode ...just use a wider lens and since there are so many EF lenses this is a really easy problem to fix.
Nobody cares about your specs
Why EOS 1D.... parked in 20 MP? Is it irrelevant for sports and journalism?
Alexandre Longaray I’m no engineer, but I imagine that as the files get bigger, it means slower frames per second. I’d rather have the speed and 20 mp is more than enough for most situations. I have the 5DsR for high end commercial portraits, but for sports action, I’ve never had a paying client complain about the files being too small.
David Bergman It makes perfect sense. Thanks!
@@DavidBergmanPhoto Also likely that a 20MP sensor allows you to get better performance in low light, as opposed to a higher MP Sensor. This thing is about Speed, Agility, and good low light performance, not to mention amazing video!!
👍✳️👍✳️👍✳️
Video capabilities of the camera could have been discussed more🙄
madhu makkena I’m primarily a still photographer and am just talking about my personal experience with the new body. The specs are out now and I’m sure there will be plenty of new videos as soon as some cinematographers gets their hands on it.
The last of it's kind from Canon. And then there's the Nikon D6?
Eye AF, reliable: Sony, for years now.
lumberjack3008 Head tracking with deep learning is more useful for things like sports action. Players wearing helmets or turned away from the camera is still spot on. When shooting portraits, you can turn on eye AF in live view so best of both worlds.
@@DavidBergmanPhoto
Awesome
no EAF for $6.500.00 ?
Jose Juarez it has eye AF when using the electronic shutter.
12800 iso no noise ??? U got to be kidding !!! With shutter 1/500+ low light 12800 iso , definitely their is noise in 1dx , but usable
Classic Canon... Releasing the 1dx mk3, a camera that almost nobody asked for. Ignoring the 7d mk3, 5dsr mk2, and c100 mk3, the cameras that most people have been asking for.
There won't be a 5Dsr 2, it will be mirrorless and its called the EOS Rs, will be out in a few months.
Michael Bell oh, that's good to know. Glad to hear it’ll get its well deserved update.
No crop is crazy? Only in canonland.
Touch Screen is not a nice feature.
Lol canon is still living in DSLR dinosaur age
You've never built a camera in your life, you amoeba...
James Deak There are so many of us working professional photographers who shoot and love our DSLRs. I don’t think they’re going away any time soon.
Most working pro sports and wildlife shooters are still using DSLRs, watch any spirts lately? Oh, and this wipes the floor with the a9II.
First
Over priced!!!!
Really David..I know you are an explorer of light but isn't it time to move on... Its a MK2 with a couple extra buttons and whistles. The most expensive dinosaur in the jungle...
It's actually you who needs to move on with that thoughts & beliefs. 😂
Couldn't careless about this camera. Canon put lipstick on a dinosaur. All the focus points crunched in the middle of the frame just like all Dslr's. It works like a mirrorless in live view but the ovf doesn't work. 20mp is old news. This camera is just to hold onto Canons sports photographers until they are capable of making a 1D mirrorless. And some new long sports glass witch Sony already has. I am sure there is still a market for the 1Dx 3. But i doubt there will ever be a 1Dx4. To me the 1Dx lll is a $6500 dollar paper weight.
photographerjonathan Every camera has it’s target market and you’re right - this one is not for everyone. But for people like me, this is a dream and I’ll be using it for many years to come.
