  • Behr Alkyd paint semi gloss white 3900 enamel from Home Depot. Water cleanup. It comes pretty think in the can, but paint sprayer sprays just fine. I tried to add water to make it thinner, but coverage suffered and more likely to run.
Best paint I ever used for trim, doors or cabinets.
Great alternative to oil based paint.

I’m about to use this in the satin finish for a kitchen cabinet refinish project. Cabinets were aggressively sanded with 120 grit random orbital sander and then 2 coats of zinsser oil primer were applied 24 hours apart. My plan is to sand again after 24 hours by hand with 220 grit then paint a coat of this alkyd paint, sand with 600, then paint a final coat. Now the doors are easy, I have a nice airless paint sprayer. But for the rest of the cabinets, I can’t decide if I should velour roll or foam roll or nylon brush or roll then back brush.

He's referring more generally to the fact that latex paint will have an undesirable sticky, tacky feeling all over (especially in a humid environment)- not just that the doors would stick. He used the word "rubbery" to describe the feeling.

dont use 100 grit sand paper on cabinet doors, it will leave bunch of scratch marks, use 220 grit instead, theres also hundreds of videos that show what to use to paint cabinets, theres many different products for that, advance from benjamin moore, pro classic from sherwin williams, and you can even use lacquer but thats for someone with more experience.

Old Timer that paint is not meant for cabinetry, the one he is showing is, it will dry very hard like an oil base paint, they also sell little plastic bubbles you install on the doors in order to keep them from touching the wood when closed.

I painted my cabinets with Latex and allowed the latex to CURE for 2 whole months before using them. Then I placed the items back into those cabinets and every single item STUCK to the paint, with some of the heavier items sticking so much that they actually PEELED the paint right off of the wood when I tried to remove them from the cabinet. Don't use latex! I then used some 'Advance' paint that I bought from benjamin moore on one shelf that was particularly sticky ( I used a hot air gun to scrape the latex off of that shelf) and a week later everything seemed to be okay, so I placed stuff onto the paint and no problems since then. I have since removed the latex from the other shelves in the cabinet and applied the 'Advance' paint to those shelves also. My advice to anyone who is thinking of painting anything = If ANYTHING is going to be repeatedly touching that painted surface, DON'T use latex, use benjamin moore's 'Advance' paint instead. And if it is a kitchen or a bathroom = use Advance paint there also. ('Advance' paint is a water-cleanup Alkyd paint).

I’ve got this paint as well and getting ready to use on oak bathroom vanity now that it’s all prepped (cleaned, deglossed, sanded, filled wood grain, sanded again, wiped down). They turned out great and a year later they still look like the day I painted them, I have 2 boys and this paint has held up very well, so now I am using this paint again this week to redo a kitchen table and 4 chairs but in a different color. Hope that helps with your question 😉

shure46 no dont add any mineral spirits to the waterborne it flows nice as it comes out of the can. the alkid behr paint isn't oil, its also a hybrid, they just named it alkyd which confuses people, I recommend either pro classic hybrid or benjamin moore advance, and if you want to skip the sanding you should consider using PPGs breakthrough paint, it sticks to everything without sanding, trust me I've done my tests

Crap! That's all I can say. I purchased a gallon of this paint to redo
my kitchen cabinets. I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper, used a tack cloth
to clean up, primed 2 coats with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 water based
primer and started painting with this Behr Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel using
a Purdy brush. Nothing but STREAKS! I called Behr tech support about it
and the guy was nice but had no clue! He only offered to refund my
money. I told him I didn't want my money back... I just wanted paint
that went on smoothly, not lumpy! The paint is almost as thick as honey.
It took 3 coats to cover the cabinets and all of the trim. I removed
all the doors and did the same prep work to them as I did the cabinets..
but today I'm so angry I could pull my hair out. The first coat left
streaks and lumps.. no matter how much I try to brush the product out. I
put a 2nd coat on and most of the brush streaks are gone but not
overlapping brush strokes which look lumpy. Sanding is not an option as I
tried this on a piece of sacrificial wood and it just gum's up the
sandpaper even after leaving it out in the hot sun for a few days to
dry! I'm going to try rolling it now as that's my only hope.
I'm a Senior. I've been painting my whole life... at least since I was 12 years old with my Dad. I've used most brands of paint. I can honestly tell you I've never used paint this crappy in my life! I'll NEVER buy any Behr product again... especially this CRAP!

Most alkyd paints are formulated much thicker than they used to be in order to comply with regulations imposed by our federal over-lords. In order to get them to flow, you need to break the law and add some mineral spirits.
Otherwise, the poster of this video is correct in that most high quality alkyd paints will give you a harder finish than most latex paints. There are exceptions of course. I have found that Graham Aqua-Borne acrylic does a decent job of hardening. Many latex paints can be tacky for many months after applying. For instance, I made the mistake of using some on a TV cabinet I made just before Christmas 2014. It is not March 2017 and that damned cabinet still has a sticky feel to it. Not wet, but if I leave something on it for a day or so, I have to give it a yank to break it free.
I tend to use the Graham for exterior work and Benjamin Moore oil based for interior trim and cabinets. The latex does a better job of stretching and shrinking as the wood moves through the seasons when in an exterior situation.Kind of hard to beat the tough finish of alkyd for trim and cabinets that get handled all the time and need to be scrubbed once in a while. But use a high quality alkyd paint. Many cheap ones will yellow badly due to lower grade linseed oils. I have trim painted over ten years ago with Benjamin Moore satin impervo that show little signs of yellowing. While one room painted with a cheap grade turned yellow within just a year or two.

    • @kolinken9524
      @kolinken9524 7 лет назад +3

I agree with you about latex paints. They should be applied to walls. ;-)
For cabinets in my other rentals I went with Benjamin Moore enamels. No problems at all. Went on smooth, stayed smooth and flat and dried hard. I'll NEVER use an alkyd again. Some things "old school" just can't be beat. Like a real telephone which one can pick up and actually hear someone on the other end and carry on a conversation. No texting. No GPS and calculator and email's. Just TALKING clearly to the other person the old fashioned way. ;-)
