Your kitchen is so adorable. The original details, such as the mint back splash and the cabinet hardware, give it a charm that you can not find in modern kitchens. You've done a great job of making it functional yet keeping the original charm.

I totally agree. I like that she kept some of the original pieces of the kitchen to keep its charm. It really can’t go out of style if it’s a style of its own!

I've dreamed of a 1950's kitchen my whole life!! Somehow I always end up in 1980's houses and I have to buy everything 50's for my kitchen. So much better, cleaner, and safer than a new particle board and formaldehyde kitchen with Chinese drywall, cabinets, and fixtures. Old stuff was made to last. Such a happy peaceful space.

Thank you Ashley! It is ironic that we bought a place with a 1950's kitchen because we had a 1950's themed wedding LOL. Maybe it was meant to be.

I am thinking back to my last kitchen update: Swiss coffee white on the kitchen outer cabinets and a warm, pale buttercup yellow on the inside of the cabinets. Every time I opened a cabinet door, it was like seeing a sunrise. You will be blessed every time you open a cabinet door if you paint the inside a color you love.

100% Agree that this fix totally elevated your space. It's a blessing to have handy fixers in the family that can patch things in a pinch. Thanks for mentioning REAL LIFE, and how you have to fit in the work where you can. Not like a TV show where it all gets knocked out in a weekend. Slow and steady wins the race! I love the work you did with the design, paint and decorations and how your husband and kids pitched in as well, especially the flooring footage (adorable). Definitely this was a family affair and the results were so worth it. Thanks so much for sharing.

Love your kitchen. My house is from the 1940’s. The linoleum was lifting up. I cut part of it. Turned out it was like 3-4 layers. So I just would put kitchen rugs. Until we could afford to redo the kitchen as well. 10 years later. :).
    Did it ourselves. Takes time.

Excellent job! I'm in the throws of my mid century modern kitchen makeover. A lot of work, but your cabinets were in much better shape than mine. Mine were a hideous shellac reddish oak that would actually make me cry when I would go into the kitchen. Seriously, I would cry it was so ugly but I loved my Youngstown sink and metal cabinet set. So, I have wood cabinets & metal cabinets in my house. Painting the cabinets white with the old Youngstown stainless steel drawer pulls just made the kitchen pop. Looks great. All of the top cabinets are finished but the top cabinets are huge. The bottom cabinets luckily are much smaller. So, on the the bottom. It's a labor of love as you know. Great job! Such a feeling of accomplishment.

I think this is an amazing transformation! And thank you for keeping a period kitchen - too many people rip them out and replace them with soulless Ikea units.
I did the same for my parents: the house they moved into a few years ago had a solid oak kitchen which was completely bespoke. (It even still had the old pencil measurements on the side of the drawers where someone built it in the 70s or 80s). I stayed with them for a few days, stripped and sanded all the units, painted them white, and changed the handles, then painted the walls. And that was enough to transform it. I wish more people would learn that it's not only "ok" to work with what you've got rather than ripping out and replacing, but often it's actually nicer.

My kitchen cabinets have the same hardware. I have not only knotty pine cabinets, but also my wainscoting in the kitchen and dining area. I hate to cover it it, but I can’t imagine refinishing everything. I also have the scallops over the sink. They were in the dining area and I yanked them.😂 I’ve been here 20 yrs and it’s time for a change.🙄 I really want to go with the 50’s style. My kitchen is a HUGE space. It’s basically a big square room in which they put a kitchen. Would love to add more cabinets, but…. Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I’ve got hardwood under layers of linoleum. Uuughhh. Gonna check out your husband’s channel now. Thanks again!🙏

Shannon, our kitchen was just like yours when we bought our 1960 built house. Dark, dirty, dingy, beat up, and everything was covered in grease ! We bought new appliances, painted, and put in a new floor and countertops. Can you believe the previous owner had CARPETED the kitchen floor ?! Our cabinets were identical to yours. Replacing them would have cost $$$ , so we painted them like you did and replaced the hardware. Labor intensive, but budget-friendly. I love the vintage-y look of your existing cupboards! I like ours too; they are functional and they go with the older style of the house.

Love your kitchen updates. My grandmother’s home was built in the early 50s. Linoleum from that time period contained asbestos. When or if you remove the 70s/80s linoleum, you will most likely encounter some of the asbestos type. Also, be sure any old knob and tube electrical wiring has been replaced.
Best of luck in making your home yours.

He can, it is just a time issue. Since he does not have all the machinery it could take forever.

Looks great! I think I had that original flooring in my childhood home in the 70s! :-)

I think that had to be a popular floor because so many people have told me they had the same flooring .

Great job! I totally agree with you on waiting. I’ve lived in my 1950s house for nearly 2 years. You absolutely must live in it fora at least a year before you do renos. I too have had to do a budget friendly makeover on my kitchen to make it more functional until It eventually will be gutted but that’s at least a few years down the road. For now, at least it is functional and works for us.

Can you give more info on the floors?

Thank you! We just found this flooring at Home Depot. They are just square stickers. The only prep is putting that liquid down on the floor first letting it dry and then you start sticking them down. It was very easy. If you have a Home Depot near you they were pretty helpful with what we needed to get.

Thanks for the ideas. I have been wanting a recap of your kitchen for the tips. We have a 1969 kitchen and the cabinets are awful. I don't have a carpenter but I have some handy painters and we have been considering doing the cabinets. And the tile floor is a great option just to improve the look💚

This was great! My kitchen is not functional at all - sink on one side and a long way on the other side is the stove - with no counter space near stove - so I get my exercise going from one side to the other. However, that said, I do try to set up for success by zoning the spaces for what they are for with not stressing out over the dream kitchen I would like! I will never be able to afford a kitchen make-over so have to learn to love the one I have!!!
