- Hello Darlings! Ohhhh my gosh this video has taken so long to make!! I am so so sorry for its delayed appearance here on RUclips. I kept thinking oh it will take me one more day to finish off the edit, but no! More like 3 more days and really late nights! 😱
But it is finally here and I am so happy with our finished kitchen! I hope you all enjoy the video, it's a long one so grab a cup of tea and get cosy!

Those door knobs are solid brass. They’re never too old to restore. I removed all mine, soaked them in mineral spirits to strip the layers of paint, polished the living daylights out of them with brasso and nevrdull before giving them two coats of satin polyurethane. They seem plain, but they’re beautiful restored.
For future reference, the way to do selvage edges smoothly is to fold the paper on the perforations all the way along the length, use a bone folder to crease that line crisply, and then use a razor blade to cut through the perforations cleanly.

I like to put them all in a crockpotwith paint thinner, set to low, then leave for 24 hours. No elbow grease from me.
YES - I LOATHE, with every fibre of my being, a 'renovation' which simply splashes white paint over everything - beautiful timber gets coated with white, and every house looks like the inside of a shoebox.

I recently rented a townhome and when the owner showed it to me it had nice oak trim and doors and the walls were white, which went nicely with the wood and dark floors. He was in the process of fixing it up a bit, but to my horror when I went to move in, he had painted all of the wood trim and doors white and the walls a sickly beige. I was so bummed but what was I gonna do? He didn’t even prime the doors and all the paint is starting to peel lol. I’m sure he thought he was making it look better, but I much preferred it before he painted it. What a shame
@, I know, right? They always do the same thing, and it will all be out of style in 15-20 years!

Beautiful! You may want to consider putting a piece of clear Plexi over the wall paper above your stove. Vintage wall paper isn't treated and is real paper (as you probably know) and cooking oil and splatters will do the same thing that happened to the old oil residue.
I was just about to suggest the same thing. They worked so hard on it I'd hate to see it get ruined. The house I live in was built in 1923 and the kitchen was all wallpaper. I wish we put something up to protect it because it got ruined and we had to tear it all off.
I wish I knew how they were able to keep it clean and free of grease stains all those years before we bought it
Plexiglass? Please don’t cover it with that stuff! Sorry, I think that would be awful but I agree it needs something for protection.
I'm sure, you could also coat it with something. They probably make a product specifically for that purpose. I mean, I haven't checked, but it stands to reason. And otherwise, clear, matte acrylic paint should do the trick.

@@maribethwhiting7114 By being incredibly, even psychotically careful. It's the Depression era mentality. People used to be SO SO SO anal about caring for their possessions. They would fix and clean things over and over and over and never throw them away. My mother was like that and it drove my slobby self crazy, but years later, I understand. She grew up so very poor, that anything nice she owned, she had worked super hard and scrimped and saved for. I've never been that poor and I'm not sure--short of actual disabled homeless people--that anybody lives like that anymore, at least not in the USA. The Depression was just terrible. People were starving.
Yes! I feel the same. Every home renovation or furniture revamp, I'm screaming, "NO! You're ruining it!😱 Leave it vintage!"
Me too. Why are modern homes all white these days. So plain and cold looking.
I love how in the 1950's there were so much colour like pink and green then you look at today and its just black and white and grey

Back in the late 1970's my mom and I were putting wall paper on my bedroom ceiling while we stood on chairs across from each other. After we had dipped it into the glue bath, her end slid out of her hand. The wall paper was enough to cover my 12 year old body!! It was so gross, wet, sticky and slippery but it was so funny that we both just laughed! 😆 Your kitchen looks great! 🥰

I love your kitchen. You are so right on about todays lack of utilization of color and patterns. It just gave your kitchen that wonderful warm feeling from my childhood that i totally miss. I was born in june of 1950. I had a wonderful childhood. I can remember even the smells...sounds and feelings of the era. I miss it.

Pulling the adhesive paper out was a good decision. Not just for the color but one ding with a plate or utensil, and there will be a hole on the paper, which then gathers moisture and dirt .That paper is not meant for kitchen counters, but rather for decoration on seldom used shelves or drawers.
If you want to freshen up the countertops, you can prime them, paint and put a few coats of polyurethane, designed for kitchens cabinets.
The doorknobs are brass and can be polished to the original shine.
Lovely! Kitchen renos always take longer than you think. Your curtains are really cute and that wallpaper is adorable! My mom had a coffee grinder like that and I have a match safe like the one on the wallpaper. I agree with others, you need a clear plexiglass backsplash to cover the wallpaper above the stove or it will get grease marks and spatter. Must protect your hard work!
Agreed. Also the white countertops are laminate which are virtually indestructible, so no reason to cover them.
Melamine paint covers laminate/Formica countertops extremely well and is very durable, however there’s your prep work (scrubbing, sanding and scrubbing again) 2 coats with ample drying in between I got 5 years out of mine before I had fund’s saved up and replaced them, plus you can have it tinted to whatever colour your heart’s desire
I found some very heavy gauge contact paper that is 36” wide in black. Used it on my counters which were a fabulous pink star pattern but alas only in the corners (very worn). It’s been twenty years and has a few dings but has held up well enough. Planning on a Formica with a chrome edge.

One of my favorite I Love Lucy episodes is when Lucy and Ethel attempt to wallpaper Lucy and Ricky’s bedroom. It’s hysterical and I just had to laugh with you (not at you!) when you were wallpapering your kitchen 😂. It turned out so lovely! My house was built in 1959 so you have definitely inspired me. ❤
With respect to the door handles.. If you want to strip paint from metal without the nasty fumes and mess of chemical strippers, just fill a slow cooker with water and set the dial to high. The heat and moisture will soften the paint, and often it will fall off as a single piece. Then use metal spray paint for the color you want. Looks great and your Grandmother is awesome!
That sounds so satisfying
I boil the brass (and other painted metals like hinges) in either water and vinegar or water and baking soda. Pull them out and run under very cold water to make the last of the paint pull away. Polish brass afterward with fine steel wool and more vinegar or baking soda. Also, there are tension rods that would work great over a sink for the curtain. No screws required.
Ohhhh I've drooled over wallpapers from Hannah's! I LOVE The one you chose! Fun fact, my first job was on a construction site doing caulking and painting cleanup! So, if you want to paint those shelves green, sand them down first so the paint can grip, and then use a primer before you paint. It'll help tons!
I LOVE HOW THIS TURNED OUT! AHHHH. Making me want to get my hands dirty in my own kitchen.
I saw another comment say to put plexi behind the stove - but another thing you can to do help seal is just get clear varnish and paint the wall. It'll seal the wallpaper completely if you want it to, and help preserve it well! And, super easily washable!

I'm a Realtor and can tell you I so appreciate seeing these types of updates! I don't like either when everything is so cold and dreary.
Any time you paint a kitchen or bath, use TSP to wipe down all the surfaces. And if they’re really bad, go ahead and prime the walls first. Also when painting IKEA shelves, you’ll need to sand and prime the slick surfaces. Then you’ll be able to add your color over the top.

For future reference, whenever you are gluing something down such as contact paper or wall paper, put a pin hole where the bubble is and you can push the air out the hole. All of your hard work paid off greatly, everything looks so beautiful and from my memory of my grandmothers your house looks totally 1950's. I would leave the wall paper alone, so what if it's a little stains. It's supposed to be a 1950's house! Please be extra careful about the new appliances you bought. Those old wires can cause a fire at any time. Good job guys.
I'm so happy you made this video. We just bought my husband's great uncle's house that belonged to his father before him. I've loved this home since I was 17 and I can't believe it's now ours. Like you the kitchen was renovated in the 70s so I'd like to take it a little further back in time. FINALLY a renovation video worth watching.

A quick way to wash your walls is a mop. My friend uses a sponge mop to clean walls and ceilings. Also sugar soap cleans them really well.
I use a swiffer, clip a wet cloth and boom, easy b peazy
My mom lives is a small house built 1947-50 she uses a sponge mop for all wall cleaning.
I completely agree with you on the renovating videos. I bought my first house 2 years ago and I can't tell you how difficult it is to convince the contractor and people helping us with the house that Yes, I want it to look old fashioned. Honestly, every project I do takes at least twice the estimated time. For hanging prints do you have Commando Strips? They can hold up to 5lbs, you don't need to put a hole in the wall and are removable.

Bit by bit I am getting my flat vintage (1930s in the sitting room, early 50s inspired in the kitchen because, although my era is the 1930s I rent from a co op who put in the kitchen so I have to work with what I have) and 1930s style bedroom. The decorators, when I am able to get the rooms painted and papered are gonna be like this with me lol. I want dark wood skirting boards, the white plank doors stripped and stained dark wood, and also the ugly white light switches replaced with black retro Bakelite ones.

Kitchens back in the day are built to last. I cook on my 1950 oven (rewired by Antique Appliances in GA) and wash my dishes in my 1940's sink. I love how your kitchen turned out. Wallpaper is great.

The kitchen looks great. A cool thing you can do with the shelves since paint won’t stick. Take a vintage or vintage style fabric, soak is liquid starch and cover the shelves. I have lined and backed my kitchen cabinets and it looks really good. Plus it peals off very easily.
harder to wipe to clean though? kitchens get messy from cooking

Shevles need to be prime first before painting.

One thing you can look for to put up the curtains is a tension rod that doesn't need to be nailed in. They are really cheap and easy to find here (us) at hardware or home stores

I was going to second the tension rod. I have them in my kitchen. (I have café style curtains. My house was built in 1951. It's been redone a few times. I'm working on a more country feel in my kitchen.)
If you apply contact paper, do not cut, put anything wet or hot on it. Be aware that if it's near a sink you may want to caulk & seal it.

Yes! I agree. If there's one thing that got my attention, that was it. The pink wallpaper really brings out the green in the tile. Before that, it looked too brown.
Small tips- get your finger wet when smoothing out the chaulk. Cut open boxes to lay flat underneath your sheets when painting. (Extra protection if you spill your paint.) Cut in when you are painting with a brush, then roll. :) I love the colors that were picked! Good job you guys!
The vintage wallpaper really ties in the backsplash. So much warmer with the wood cabinet and shelving! I love it 💕

Agreed. The brown particle board is still 1970's style. Painting it would really make a difference!
Yes, sand them and use a good quality primer (even if the paint has primer in it). A topcoat of clear polyurethane will help it last longer as well.
Sage, you are adorable! I totally agree with you about the ruination of vintage kitchens by modernization. The doorknobs are so high! Gorgeous kitchen. You may be able to paint the shelves if you wash them with trisodium phosphate first
TSP cleans all things kitchen!
USN wife and TSP was used to clean when we moved into a housing unit and again when we moved out. The units might be messy when we moved in but when we left, we passed the white glove test.

The green wall makes an amazing accent wall. Pulls everything together. Beautiful job. For the white shelving, since it had a finish on it, to make new paint stick, sanding it with a very fine sand paper helps make it rough for a layer of paint to stick a lot better.

Use an oil blocking primer. Here in the US we have a paint called Slick Stick which is an undercoat primer too which would stick to your IKEA shelves if you want to try painting them green again. Meanwhile, I’d cover a few cookbooks on the shelf with paper and prime then paint green! Pops of that read a will help unify the room. Love your style. Great job!

The best way to remove paint from old hardware is to place it in a crockpot with water for about 10 hours the paint peals off and reveals the beauty of years past. I’ve been renovating 1910 craftsman house for the past 2 years and have used this method on all the original hardware.

I have had the pleasure of renovating two homes from 1890 and 1880. We live respecting the architecture characteristics and eras.
This was such a refreshing reno! I completely agree with the statement in the intro...I'm not a fan of the "new/modern" type renovations. We have an older house and I wanted warm, welcoming and more of a Tolkein (Hobbit) inspired feel. We went with sage green colors, wallpaper that looked like stone/rock..lots of mounted shelves for cutting boards and copper..toped it off with wooden produce baskets and a heater that looks like a fireplace. So happy to see someone do something different with a nodd to the older, warmer and welcoming style.

Hi Sage, the kitchen really turned out lovely. I had no idea there were unused old vintage wallpapers being sold. Doing home renos really is tiring and don't know how people buy homes and flip them constantly, but it's an investment. Grandma was very sweet!

Oh My Goodness ,She's precious .I adored my Grandmother more than anyone .She was the sweetest person I've ever known ,and I miss Her everyday .I grew up going to her house and My Pawpaw's ,everyday .They had the biggest garden in Alabama and fruit trees everywhere also .I learned so much from them both and I pray U have yours in your life a very very long time .Bless Your Sweet heart for what U do .

I agree about cocking!! I grew up in an Edwardian farm house that was rebuilt (very quickly and with poor materials) in the late 20s after a fire, and I helped out with renovations. Cocking was my favorite part of the journey! That and taking out a wall in the dining room...that took forever and was so destructively fun!

I recently found your channel and subscribed. The first video I watched was about being a housewife in the 40s. Love it and I was born in 1938 in Ohio and remember when they announced on the radio that the war was over. I stood on a hassock and saluted! lol And I remember taking piles of newspapers to school for the war effort. Margarine was a bag of fat (probably lard) which you put this red tablet in and kneaded the bag to color the fat and to add flavor. My mother had a wringer washer, so no scrubbing on a washboard. Well into the late 50s, my mother always wore a housedress and heels. Never saw her clean anything, but our house was always immaculate. And she loved to wallpaper!
Darling that little tool that they have to help smear the caulking is really awesome because it will actually round off the edge perfectly and not leave the extra linear bead that overlaps your finger. And you're caulking should go on completely and utterly last.

I totally agree with you on the "modern" kitchens. Everyone has the SAME THING. I don't want my house to look like everyone elses. I've come to detest the words "needs to be UPDATED"! I have many of my grandmother's things in my house and cherish them. Beautiful job!

I agree about people renovating things and they end up looking blank and sharp and losing all their character! I've run into a similar things where I've seen people take these stunning vintage wedding dresses and try to "modernise" them and they just end up looking so ugly and it makes me so sad! You did a wonderful job - it's so cute :)

Your kitchen turned out so darling! I love how the green and pink worked with the tiles you already had! One idea to dress up part of counters, without costing a huge fortune, is to fold a vintage tablecloth, fabric, etc. and then cover it with a piece of glass cut to fit. I've done that before, and I loved it (just don't put anything that's very hot on the glass unless its the type to withstand heat)
Every new video of yours makes me happy, and this one was one of my favorites. I saw how loyal you were to your work, you thought about every detail, you were afraid of how it would turn out, you were decorative. You covered your fear with a dose of jokes, you seemed to enjoy it, but again you were impatient for the result. You're an angel, Sage! I have never had the opportunity to see a person who can be so happy no matter what. I like that you are modest and that you do what you love.

You did a lovely job! Love the green and the wallpaper and that wood shelf you found is perfect. I think my only concern would be how to keep grease from getting onto the wallpaper from the stove. I have beadboard along the wall behind my stove and even with my vent above it which helps greatly to cut doen on grease, I regularly have to wash that section of the wall and cupboards with cleaner like 409. I hope the wallpaper will be ok, it is just darling!
I’m convinced that people who replace an old charming kitchen with super modern black or white kitchen that looks like it was meant for a space ship, will sooner or later regret it. I totally agree with you that modern renovations have lost that charm and character that homes used to have.
You are so right people do kitchen renovations and they end up being all white and plain… I love a lot of color and antiques in my decorating haha… This makes me want to film the renovation of my 1970s mobile home. I’m wanting to do a vintage cottage theme in the kitchen and have the classic style appliances.
I am giving my childhood home kitchen a makeover. It was built in the 50's by my parents and was likely last updated in the 70s. I was searching for painting old cabinets and found this video. I'm using greens in mine as well! This was helpful AND entertaining
This was so great! What about using command strips to hang things for the sake of preserving the walls?
It looks so lovely Sage well done! I'm not sure if it's safe over genuine vintage wallpaper but my reprinted vintage paper is covered with decorators matte varnish to stop it from being damaged in my kitchen and bathroom. It makes is more steam proof and gently washable for oils from the stove too💚💗

You reno is beautiful. I laughed and then cried with you when some of the things didn't turn out, but I love your can do attitude of finding solutions to every problem. Its definitely a learning process with renovating, you have learnt so much that you will remember for next time. It's almost like you were born in the 40's because that's how women were in those days, they learnt all of the essential tasks that got them through times when they couldn't just go to the shops and buy whatever they wanted. I love the results. I love the wallpaper, but I helped my Mom with some in her kitchen once, never again... ...shudder. I like the green paint and the curtain. The larger shelf is nice. Great job.

Turned out great! I actually really like the white countertops, brings more dimension and ties in the trim and white door! All your hard work paid off!
