AT LAST!! The kitchen this beautiful Victorian Home is complete! When we bought this beauty her kitchen was less than spectacular. It suffered from what many historic homes suffer: evolving design. It doesn’t sound bad, right? But it often is. As plumbing needs changed, as space use changed, as technology advanced, bits and pieces of this space were updated at a time. This space hadn’t been fully reimagined since it was built, and that leads to drab design, poor function, and outdated finishes.
We faced a multitude of challenges in the space. Three doors and two windows meant there was no way to accommodate typical kitchen cabinets. Layers of old flooring held in water that caused rot. Plaster was crumbling and falling off the walls. It was about as unappetizing a space as you can imagine. This gave us the chance to get really creative with our design, and the result is possibly our favorite room we’ve ever created!
We have produced the ultimate kitchen island. In one amazing space we have all your kitchen needs at your fingertips! Who needs a “work triangle” when all you need is within arms reach! Better still, we were able to keep this space looking completely period appropriate. When you look into the front door straight back to the kitchen, you see something very similar to what would have been seen 100 years ago.
Mixed together are the rich wood tones of historic cabinets, the natural patterns of stone, aged but restored wood floors and the perfect earthy paint colors. Peek inside the expansive pantry where we’ve once again thought about what you use and how you use it, pairing a full size refrigerator next to the microwave, but both out of view of the main room.
We want to thank AJmadison.com who made the normally painful appliance buying experience an absolute BREEZE. We were able to order all our appliance online, selecting from their HUGE in stock inventory, and had our appliances in hand in less than three weeks. The customer service was absolutely top tier, and we can wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone appliance shopping.
We feel like we have created the most amazingly functional and aesthetically pleasing space imaginable. It was a joy to think outside the box on this kitchen design, and breathe new life into a space that has been the center of a home for more than a century!

I'm a sous chef and my favorite things about the kitchen are the stove and the HUGE amount of counter space; it also looks like you've put in a pot filler above the burners, so that gets thumbs up from me too. The layout actually reminds me of commercial kitchens, so while I'm not used to seeing this in a home, it makes sense to me as a chef. Great job guys, as always!

Thank you for answering my one question about the kitchen design - the tap (which I thought was a water filter) by the hobs- it makes perfect sense now!

The sink on the opposite of the cooktop seems like it would be difficult. I'm always washing my hands or something and would have to keep going around the counter top to do it. But maybe I'm just used to other layouts I've had and not this one! I LOVE the floors, pantry and storage units. The whole space seems very spacious!

    • @lauraoergel6003

It's closer to the victorian setup! Which was an actual work kitchen!

    • @SuzanneBaruch
      @SuzanneBaruch Год назад +2

@@lauraoergel6003 sort of but not really. In a Victorian kitchen, typically the cooking stove and sink would both be on an outside wall, unlike here where both are on the island. You'd also see shelves for utensils and sometimes a cabinet on the walls. A Victorian kitchen would frequently utilize a large table that sat in the middle of the room and was used solely for assembly of items and never for the purpose of eating.
Conversely, here we have one island that incorporates all functions into one, including preparation, storage, cooking, washing and dining.

Wow. Hard to pick one favorite among all of that fabulousness. One small detail I noticed was the bead board in the pantry. The sides running horizontal, while the back runs vertical. No reason for that to catch one’s eye, but it does. Keeping the windows and doors where they belong shows that “This ain’t your Mamas HGTV flip.” Well done.

Talk about a transformation! I am completely astounded by the outcome! That original kitchen looked like something you'd see on the 1980s sitcome "Mama's Family." Drum roll.....welcome to the transformed kitchen! It is completely breathtaking and extremely well done! Really really wonderful!! Your creative solution allows for exactly what you said...guests, friends, family can sit and visit with the cook and not be in the way. Such a challenge...I can't even imagine that space with the additional door. Oh, but that grout disaster?!!! I'd have gone ballistic. And even worse when you are on a deadline. I love the drying racks...in my second house I had an old carved wooden paper towel holder I didn't need, so I added hooks to the 'arms' and nails to the back piece, and put it up near the ceiling to hang herbs. I love that you don't just 'decorate', but make a practical, comprehensive plan, then integrate the design choices seamlessly. We still have our original 1931 cabinets with part of the 'cooler' intact, and three doorways, so our full size fridge is just through the opening into the laundry room. It's actually more convenient there. I loved the full story with close up footage, and the final reveal. Congratulations!! :)

So many kitchens have a honking big refrigerator that dominates the room, but yours is out of sight and just steps away, and you have the under-counter fridge for frequently used items. I wasn't sure about the dark green, but there's plenty of white (and the two "supermarket" lights) to keep the room bright. I've always liked subway tile!

OMG your story of the tile grout. That is why I have a hard time having anyone help me. I just do it all myself. Also Im sure Dr Lillian Gilbreth would be proud of your kitchen design, you took into consideration todays needs and function.

OMG! A few years back I designed an historic kitchen w/a "mega island" (in order to preserve some lovely windows) with the fridge in the pantry :D I don't know why it didn't occur to me to put a second undercounter fridge right there in the prep space :`( I wish I'd discovered this channel sooner!

It is so beautiful!! The room is sooo small, but you used every inch effectively. All the extra touches make it amazing!! My favorite thing is the pantry!! I love everything about it, especially since you painted the ceiling the same as the walls!! My least favorite is the tile on the walls, and that's only because I like putting things on the walls, and tile makes it so difficult to place a nail. The new owners are so lucky you all were the renovaters of this beautiful home!!

We use command strips and they easily hold your paintings or whatever you’d like on the walls.

Wow! What an incredibly beautiful and functional space. That work island is brilliant and the pantry is wonderful. I know you spent a lot of time on the floor but it is so unique and fit for the space. Can’t wait for the whole house tour. 🥰

And we agree as well ordering online is better than going into an actual store, because online generally is a lot cheaper than going into a store, which I would think is more convenient, but becomes more inconvenient in the Genaire is one of my wife’s dream stoves

Fantastic kitchen, totally appropriate to the age and style of the house!!! I'm do tired of the modern. Cookie-cutter kitchens put in old houses. Love it!🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

I appreciate the layout this one has with the big multi-functional island.. My 1900 home has a small kitchen that has 4 doors in it and 2 low windows like that. Sadly closing up any of the doors would not work and none lead to a pantry. An island like yours might solve a bunch of my problems... but yeah, I am still struggling with layout and what to do after many years... anyway, your videos are awesome- so many cool fixes and gorgeous furniture/fixings. Thanks for sharing, I can't wait to see more! Came here from an old house restoration FB group and have not been disappointed;)
