From a guy who has owned his 91 MR2 since new and delivered in 1990....Pretty accurate. Only issues I have ever had have been a shift cable snapped, door speaker wires crap out due to poor design, and speedo cable broke. CD play also stopped working. Of course I have 38K miles on it.
@@DybrYT Your idle air value is probably bad. It might be gummed up with carbon because the valve sits in a low spot. I tried cleaning it and using a no-name Chinese part but those solutions didn't work. What fixed it for me was a used Toyota one off a part-out. You might be able to get the valve new or an aftermarket. btw this valve is the one that's attached to the throttle body. It has coolant going through it and I think the connector is a four pin
Great review! I've had a tintop turbo since 2014 and it's been an amazing semi-daily! Great grocery getter and even with the power advantage the turbo has over 5s cars I've never experienced "snap" oversteer. You are absolutely correct about driver competency. A fairly aggressive alignment helps with the understeer without a big hit to tire wear if you don't want to get realigned before and after every track/autox day. I daily drove on my autox alignment and it really didn't wreck tires but totally eliminated understeer w/o anti-swaybar tuning.
One MAJOR thing your car has going for it: it's a coupe, not t-top. I own a 99 sw20 with a 170 hp ish originally from Germany (so a 3sge) it's barely enough for this car, but it's a great engine for the car though.. but the leaking t-top and condensation... Huge major problems..
Great video as always! Sadly, I couldn't get my parents convinced to let me buy myself an NA 3sge one, but I hope that they won't be too expensive in let's say a year or 3. It still is my obtainable dream car.
Thanks, I appreciate the support! & just keep saving, and you’ll eventually get one. I was only able to afford this car because I sold my truck and street bike that I had at the time.
Great video. I noticed you have to pull the handbrake all the way up. In the UK there's rules on how many clicks it should have but every time I tighten mine it goes soft again and I have to pump the foot brake and pull it up with it pushed in. I'm guessing it's the way it's meant to be right ? Or are my lines stretched as fuck haha? . It was raining yesterday and got loose while pulling off for the first time pretty easy to control just had to stay in it and ride it out a bit , scared my mom but was fully in control lol (3sge 1990)
I’ve never seen a situation where you have to pump the brakes to get the e-brake to work. Assuming your brakes work normal other than that, I would look at tightening the e-brakes cables(they do stretch over time) or just buying new ones. I can’t speak for the UK, but in the US, I was able to get a new set for $50 a few years ago.
I am holding off on sway bars for the moment. I finally ordered coilovers and want to see how the cars handles with the new set up before making more changes.
@@saladbar21 I know this is a 2 year old comment but if anybody is reading this be careful about "upgrading" your rear sway bar. If you make the rear too stiff you will spin out way more frequently. When I ran a Boxster I even tried disconnecting the rear sway bar. On my MR2 I put a NA thin rear sway bar. If you are really good at driving ok, but if you are average like me a soft rear bar will do you good.
Im getting my hand on an 1993 RHD Mr2 here (Hopefully) shortly for 11k. Its manual but i havent learned how to drive manual yet lol. Ive driven manual cars a little before but stalled out alot.. i plan on learning in this one. The manual car i drove was a peice of garbage though, How is the clutch/shifting experience in the mr2 sw20?
I like how the shifting feels on MR2's. As long as the shift cables and associated bushings are in good shape, the shifting should feel great on MR2. I prefer the feel of cable shifters vs direct.
The transmission already had issues when I got the car. I just finished the job by abusing it at autox and track days. It was a lot of hard launches mixed with my bad shifting technique(since I was just getting into performance driving).

I have a 91 MR2 5SFE. It idles at 1500 - 2000 rpm. Do you know what it could be?

My man speaks the truth about oversteer
Thanks, I really like your videos by the way!

This is one of the best reviews I’ve seen.. Great video
Finding an SW20 for under 10k is a huge challenge
The 95 Australian version actually had 180 hp in N/A Form.And 0_62 mph in under 7.5 seconds.Quick.

Leaking t-tops are the worst, and new seals are expensive, at least in the states.

@@saladbar21 The money isn't the problem, it's that unless I move out, I'm not allowed to get myself an older car that I have to wrench on.

Bigger sway bars will help out with body roll.

K swap it man . New seats too
The plan is to swap the car with a 2GR. It is plenty of power for what I want from this car. If I wanted big power, K swap is the way to go!

where do you get the usb port for the cig lighter
I got it off amazon. It was a cheap universal usb port.
Your cell phone stores sell these universal fit adapters/ USB ports
What kinda driving habits etc. caused the transmission to blow and how would one prevent that from happening?
The transmission already had issues when I got the car. I just finished the job by abusing it at autox and track days. It was a lot of hard launches mixed with my bad shifting technique(since I was just getting into performance driving).
If you want to prevent transmission issue, the biggest thing is just regular maintenance and letting it come up to temperature before beating on it.
Give me some more acty videos
Hopefully we will have some Acty videos soon. We ordered some parts to refresh the suspension and steering, just waiting on parts to be shipped.
