I just changed the plugs on my 2GR and sent it lol. Changing a seal just gives it the opportunity to leak. The throttle pedal is a little touchy, but you’ll get used to it quickly. It’s amazing how fast the 2GR revs.
I should have done the same thing. Now I have a leaking engine 😂
Love your videos man.
Thanks, I appreciate the support!
Lets finish the sw20!!!❤
Absolutely, the goal is to have it done within the next month!
Great video im right now trying to look for videos to convice my parents let me buy a 1994 mr2 its in great codition and only 135k miles on it
My MR2 was my daily driver through college. Now it’s my weekend car. It was a great daily and alway look forward to driving it and tinkering with it. If you ever have any questions. Feel free to shoot me a message on instagram. instagram.com/salad__bar21/profilecard/?igsh=MXVlbm95OGI4aHE3NA==
great video! funny enough i have a similar leak. did you replace the gasket to the plate that holds the rear main seal? i didnt and im wondering if thats what caused the seal to fail. i used mahle jv1728, which is allegally an oe manufacturer.
No, I did not replace the seal to that plate. It didn’t even cross my mind. Once I figured that out, I’ll make sure to give an update!
Good progress, love the updates! Can't wait for first drive...
Thanks, I’m hoping within the next month!
What is the part number for the control module
Did ur codes pull up casually when you connected the battery nd obd2?? Im tryna pull my codes
Yeah, I had the battery connected and turned the key to the on position to scan for codes.
Bout time you mess with a 2gr
I know, I should have done it sooner 😂
Awesome work! Nothing better than it firing up without issue on the first attempt!
It was honestly such a relief 😅 I broke my rule of not buying an engine from a car that was in a front end collision. It was a good deal, but I was sweating it to be honest!
What’s up foo
Trying to get these cars ready for season😂
Fantastic work!
Thanks a lot!
Sooooo happy for you! And already that 2gr sounds awesome!
Thanks, I’m happy with the sound. I don’t feel the microphone did it justice!
I bought the same coils. What endlinks did you run on the rear?
I ended up running the prime mr2 adjustable end links. All of the adjustable endlinks out there are pretty similar, so my recommendation is to buy whatever is on sale. primemr2.com/products/sway-bar-endlinks-upgraded
THATS A RESISTOR YOU AMATEUR. LOL.
Pay extra attention to the copper washers on the fuel filter. I had one that was about 1mm too big and it sprayed gas in three directions upon first start. My 2GRFE first start without a muffler was fun. It truly sounds like a race car.
2gr gonna be better than the honda j series engine in the other one
Both engines are good, but the 2gr makes a lot more sense in a mr2.
@saladbar21 yeah it's gonna sound better too
Awesome progress. I cant wait to see this thing run around a course/track. Makes me wish I bought a complete engine for my car instead of building it myself.
Building the engine is going to take extra time, but it’ll be so worth it. You have a ETA on when it will be done?
Hello do you have the part number for the battery harness?
Yes, I used part number 81601FE030.
Ive been daily driving my 2GR MR2 for the better part of 2 years now. First and foremost, the transformation the 2GR creates between the 5SFE and even a 3SGTE is one of the most incredible upgrades you'll ever experience. You fall in love with the exclusivity, the intoxicating exhaust note that sounds exotic and like nothing else, the lack of maintenance required (especially in comparison to a 30yr old turbo 4cyl that's been flogged, beaten and bruised it's whole life while the only maintenance performed is occasional oil changes and spark plugs once fouled) being a modern V6 standard in minivans, SUV's, passenger cars and exotic cars alike, the ability to run 87 whenever your pockets are a little light and you are only planning to commute or travel, the unreal quanity of available parts at every parts store you can find (minus swap specific items), and most importantly- how much faster and more responsive the car becomes over either factory engine. My 5S/auto had nearly 300k miles. Tired, maybe 75whp left in it, no comparison. But even a modedately modded 3S that makes similar horsepower can't hold a candle to the 2GR cars. 275wtq at the bottom of the tachometer and 300whp at the top, any gear is the right gear, and never a delay for boost or to enter the powerband.
You'll fall much deeper in love with the car after your first drive. The S54 is a mistake. I too started with one. Spent significant money for s54 specific parts. Southbend clutch kit, axles, mounts, shifter cables, etc. In daily driving scenarios, not one launch, but spirited driving for sure because I just paid 14k for a performance engine swap, I shattered 2 differentials. 1st likely a trans on its way out, less than 10 miles into ownership, 5k rpm shift from 1st to second. Shatter the diff and put windows in side of trans. 2nd S54 lasted about 500 miles. sheered teeth off ring gear in the diff turning up hill, maybe 1/3-1/2 throttle. The flexing action destroyed it. Caused me a lot of down time. I have an E153 LSD now, and I beat the piss out of it. Never a complaint. Never broken. Top speed at 7200rpm limit with S54 was 141mph. I've been 166 with the E153 with almost 200rpm left. S54 is a blast, but 1st gear is a useless ratio. Spins every time. Then shift. No other option. and it's simply too weak. I wanted it to work so bad, considered the helical LSD upgrade from the MR-S, but it shattered twice and was tired of cruising above 4k rpm at speed limit on the highway.
Yeah, it’s not ideal to start with the s54, but it’ll be good enough to get started until I can swap in a e351. & Also, I appreciate you sharing your experience going from a NA/ auto car to a 2GR, makes me excited to get my car going!
Did you need to beef up the stock trans to take the additional power ? What did that engine come out of ?
The engine came out of a 2015 Toyota Sienna. Toyota made the 2GRFE for ages and used it in a lot of cars. I’m using the stock S54 transmission. It’ll handle cruising around but won’t handle abusive driving long term. My plan is to swap out to a e351 transmission down the road.
Why don’t you just do step by step on how to swap a v6 in a mr2 stop hatin 😂
I’m documenting the swap process on the 2GR. The videos don’t go into every little detail. I’ll be doing more swaps in the future, and I’m open to going over everything in more detail. I just wasn’t sure if it’s worth doing this time because Frankenstein Motor Works has a great video series on how to do the swap in this chassis already.
As a 1991 MR2 Turbo owner. I approve this video! Looking forward to seeing updates.
Thanks, there is definitely more to come!!
Can you put a 3800
Love the 3800! Im sure it could fit with enough time and money, not worth it to me in this application. I would love one a fiero though!
J series 😫 is it a j32a2?
Yup, it’s a j32a2 with a m90 on it!
the under beard is strong, I have the same thing lol
Thanks 😂
I was really wanting to do a 2gr, but got a great deal on a gen 4 swapped car that I will be swapping everything over from. Perhaps I’ll have both in the future, but excited to see how yours goes. What’s your recommendation for a fortune auto spring rate swap? My current standard 4/6k is way too soft!
The MR2 I’m currently doing the swap on runs fortune autos with 7k in the front and 9k in the rear. I like the setup and feel like it’s a good compromise between street and track. I’ve taken the car on numerous road trip and never felt beat up after driving for long periods. Before going up that high, I would double check how much you can change spring rates before it is recommended you revalve the shocks.
you need the intake and maf sensor plugged in to fire
I know, that’ll get put on when I install the engine harness.
@ gotcha. looking good 🫡🫡
Awesome progress! So excited to see this thing rip.
I’m excited as well, my hope is to have the car ready by for the first WMC event!
Let's go! Great work!
Thanks 🙏
It still amazes me how Toyota made it so this modern engine can fit into the chassis.
That’s so true, I occasionally wonder if they consider the aftermarket and how people may modify the car during the design process.
Love your videos man. This car is going to be fantastic. I'm doing a Gen 4 swap because it's a lot easier and cheaper and I've never owned a boosted car and I want those sounds, but 2GR is obviously the best way to go if you have the money.
Gen 4 is still a great choice, a more modern engine with good power and turbo noises!
some day i will get to do this
It’s definitely worth it!
Would it be easier to get the engine/trans in pulling from the top or dropping it from the bottom with the car on a lift ?
It’s easier to put the engine in going from the bottom. What I do is pick the back end up with a cherry picker to get the car high and then slide the engine into place. After that, I lower the car and can use the cherry picker to mount the engine. Here’s a video of how I did it before: ruclips.net/video/4GTo4ANfiME/видео.htmlsi=dgKKVYeGO_gRFoWe
@saladbar21 awesome thanks. I'm about to start my swap here soon and I have a engine table and was thinking it be easier from the bottom and have it all sitting on the table
Dream swap! Is Doug doing your harness?
Yup, I paid Doug at WireGap to do the harness!
Thank you for your video.
do u have a link to the amazon pan itself?
Yeah, this is the link to pan I bought. Price went up slightly, but it’s still about 30 bucks. a.co/d/f7n0gT4
Can't believe you copied my track wheels ;) Good choice though! What transmission did you end up going with? It'd be cool to do a back to back comparison w/ my E351 whenever you get the car ready for the 2025 track season!
Great minds think a like! & the plan is to run the s54 transmission to start then swap out to a e351 once I have all the parts to swap out transmissions. Are you in the Oregon area as well?
@ Yep! But we know each other already ;) Red 2GR mr2 that smoked out autoX. @mr_nichan
@@LazyItalian99oh yes we do😂 once the car is running, I’ll shoot you a message to see about going to an event together!
@@saladbar21 sounds good! You’re motivating me to finally install the geometry kit that’s been sitting in the garage lol
I appreciate the build vids. I'm also in Oregon, around the Portland Metro area. Are you also around this area? Are there any MR2 clubs/meet ups around here?
I’m about one hour south of Portland. I don’t go to any of the car meets in that area, but PDX MR2 Group on a Facebook does the occasional meet up during the summer. I do go to PIR on a regular basis during the summer. If you ever see me, say hi!
@@saladbar21 If there are any meets/events down there, that would be cool too. A one hour drive isn't bad at all.
@@xxjon94xxyou got instagram?
Thanks for helping me with my decision whether to swap or not. With one more "modded" 93 hardtop, I think I'll keep mine stock. Just so there's at least one left. Should be lots of fun for you, though!
That’s pretty fair, most people with hardtops are modifying their cars!
@saladbar21 it's so hard not too!
Awesome stuff! I actually have the baffles sitting on my shelf of "parts to install when I get around to it".. I'm not sure I got that little extra baffle for the oil drain though. I also have a bashed in oil pan. I wonder if Australia has decent options for replacement pans... You are going to love the way this sounds, and the best part is there is no faffing about with dyno's and tuning once you're "done". As long as you tell Marc what your specs are, you will get an OEM experience out of the box then it's time to go and play ;)
If the bash on the oil pan isn’t too bad, you could likely just hammer it out. I know a couple of people who have done that. & I’m definitely excited to drive the car with the swap. If everything goes smooth, I should have the car up and running by the end of December
I had this bubble problem the other day but my car had a vacuum leak and it was idling high when I turn it off and walk away I saw antifreeze on the floor but I fixed the vacuum leak do you think I blew the head gasket ?
Just fill it to the very top of the cap in the engine bay?? Thanks for rhis great video.. im about to go for it
You could fill up the funnel adapter part of the way. It has a plug, so if there is extra coolant, it can be put back into the coolant container.
Smart move getting all the parts first and engine last. Your comment about having a harness made is a great tip that I didn't event think of, Ill see about having someone make my harness.
Getting a new harness is definitely worth it. It beats having to chase potential gremlins in an old harness. Since your car is a corvette, I’m sure there is lots of options for wiring harnesses.
Any videos on fuel pressure regulator upgrade
this isnt snap oversteer lmao
Glad to see a 2GR on the channel! Your s54 should be fine. Mine survived 8k miles and 20 autocross events before the differential let go. Now I have an E153 but I’m swapping to an E351 this winter.
Good to hear, I figured as long as I avoid hard launches it should hold up for a season before switching to a e351!
Who’s doing your harness for you?
Doug with Wiregap.
comment
Appreciate it, helps push the video out 😅
what ac compressor do you have to run with it? how were you able to compression test it at the junk yard?
I’m using the TCS ac lines which are meant to work with the 1GR ac compressor. The part number they recommend is the Denso 4711413. Regarding the compression test, I should have been more clear they had a video compression testing the engine. It’s always a bit of a gamble because people can be dishonest, but I felt good about it. I’ve bought plenty of stuff from this junkyard and have had good experiences.
@@saladbar21 I have talked to about a dozen people that have got their 2gr already pulled so they couldn't see it running and that all have had good luck even with 150k+ miles.
