Montana makes the throw, Clark makes the catch, Brady looking on in the stands. How it really happened. Like a movie.
That would be my intro to a Montana bio pick, opening line, "Dwight be ready" (catch happens) and just a quick cut to a little boy very upset he can't see the game. And the mother exclaims "Tommy they won" cut right back to Montana getting into too talls face. And title card.
All 3 of them that day.
Pro football doesn't get any better than that.
Why do I cry when I watch this?
I guess because I lived it, along with my fellow San Franciscans.
You can't imagine the joy we all felt.
Cuz it reminds you how old you are.
im 23 i hope i get a memory like that
@@kingpin-zc3zwI’m 36, it’s coming man it’s coming 🤝🏼
I can't believe Tom Brady was at this Game, and it was his earliest Football memory! Crazy!
We find out many years later Brady was at that game.
Poetry
Where did he actually say he was at that game? - all he said was "This is probably my first Football memory ever" - ya ever heard of watching games in front of a TV folks?
@@denisrutz he said he was at “the catch”. He also said everyone jumped up and he got freaked out. Then he said his mom‘s got a cute picture of them and he was 4, And they showed the actual foto of him and his mom.
Are you ok?
Rest in peace Dwight Clark rest in peace
I'll catch you on the other side my friend
I never noticed the pump fake to get the Dallas D lineman to jump and clear a passing lane. There was never and still has never been a cooler quarterback than Joe Montana. Dwight Clark was in a league of his own.
Right. And, Joe threw off the WRONG foot!
@@brucemarshall3446 Now that part, I ALWAYS noticed! He was a textbook, perfect QB.
I think the pump was more about stopping the rush- Joe was about to be sacked- and buying an extra half second till Dwight was open.
Those rushers were TALL. and Joe still had to throw OVER them😄
This play still gives me the chills!! Was at the game with my parents 12 years old such a great memory !!!!!!!
Montana has so much class
I would have agreed with you Dan about 5 years ago. I always held Joe in high regard. That is until he started dissing Tom Brady.
The thing about football is that a play will last 5 seconds, but the all the thought and effort each player is putting forth is unspeakable. Time slows down so much on the field of battle.
Very interesting take
Montana was the "Cool Hand Luke" of football. The best ever!
Best ever?? You are joking.
@@thinkofitthisway7804 In my opinion, Joe Montana is the greatest quarterback to ever lace up a pair of cleats. The evidence is incontrovertible. Not only does he have the statistical prowess, but he consistently came up aces in big games, with four Super Bowl championships to boot and zero losses in the big game.
@@danwalker9999 The sad ending is when San Fran dropped him off at KC.
Yes the best ever, unlike Tom, he didn't cheat and never lost a Superbowl
@@danwalker9999 Jealous of Brady much🤣
Joe Montana the best quarterback ever
Amen.
Why’d they have to put Brady in this? It ruined everything. So what if he was at the game?
I would take Marino over him
Brady and it's not even close
The goat. Nothing in football quite like a Montana drive, late in the 4th quarter, and 6 points behind.
I loved when Dwight pointed out that it wasn't called "The Throw" 😅 he and Montana were the best of friends on and off the field. R.I.P. Dwight
Joe is the greatest qb ever. He was beat up, not like the qb's these days and was still unstoppable.
if montana had played under today's rules, just imagine what he couldve done
Some of the rule changes were motivated by vicious hits on Montana, especially the Jim Burt hit.
Montana was unreal.
49ers were unreal in the 80's.
More than 40 years ago, and I remember exactly where I was. I still get goosebumps every time I see it. 16 - the best there ever was. 87 - you were part of a play that will live forever. RIP
Why does it matter where you were?
My favorite of all. His focus & concentration & skill & gifts & talent surpasses every quarterback there is. If he was playing now in this just happened Superbowl my 49 ers would of never lost but it is what it is. He's a joy to watch
The Dream Team Walsh what a Genius . Had a lot of WEAPONS Montana the GOAT and also RICE.
The late Bill Walsh needed a doctor who can dissect opposing defense Hey Joe Montana what's the doctor of Bill Walsh's offense 👍
Yes
Rice was amazing to watch him run was so awesome.
Ronnie Lott on defence wasn’t too bad either. That guy had no concept of self preservation.
RIP Bill and Dwight 🙏
The play that got me excited about football!
Crazy Tom Brady was there ~ Joe Montana was the greatest under pressure.
The stats and the results tell a completely different story. The boy who was watching in the crowd, grew up to outdo his idol.
Joe Montana, has secured his place in 🏈 football 🏈 history.
One of the greatest plays of all time, but the game wasn't over yet. Dallas got the ball on the kickoff, and Danny White hit Pearson on a crossing pattern. He was one step away from breaking it for a TD, which would have overwritten history. Eric Wright made a one arm horse collar tackle (which would likely be a 15-yard penalty today), to save the day. On the next play the 49ers' line got to White and made him fumble, recovered by the defense to seal the win.
Hail Mary to Pearson was a better play.
Joe Montana-fast thinking and cool hands... don't forget quick legs...One & only THE GOAT!
Awesome. I still remember that day😀
RIP DC. There will be others; you will never be replaced.
I was 10 years old when I see this game and this play and I know that brady have a better numbers and achievements that Joe Montana, but I am older enough, and Brady is great , but I chose Montana any Sunday, he was spectacular is this kind of games ,
7 rings 6 game winning drives in super bowl clutch is tom brady
@@seanhester8394 sorry you haven’t seen any of those super bowls. Pretty clear
Explained last comment lol
@@javi8674 because he lost the conference matches. So 1 -0 is better than 99-1.?
28-3, even that sunday?
That was the last time I cried over a sporting event. And cried like a baby. What a beautiful and unbelievable thing to see.
Was a sophomore in high school..in Columbus Ohio. We were frozen too Watchung the bengals win in the early game. In the bitter cold. But I remember being mesmerized by the game. Back and forth. Those were great days!
Here for tears, chills and cheers after Super Bowl VXIII 2024! CONGRATULATIONS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS! 🥳
Thank You, Bill, Joe, Dwight and team for the great memories! 👍
Tears.
I was 11 watching the game with my Dad in San Jose.
We jumped up and down and yelled for 10 minutes.
You could hear the whole neighborhood cheering outside.
Probably...the most iconic play in NFL history!
And so many thought it was a broken play; the whole thing was by design. Yet to my knowledge the full truth didn't come out until years later. It's awesome (and fitting) how a young Tom Brady was there to experience it. The Vin Scully call on the play was nothing short of fantastic. Whenever I re-watch The Catch it lifts my spirits!
I've seen The Catch a million times. It never gets old.
Considering the stakes and pressure, this was the single greatest touch pass in NFL history
I remember that play. Those guys were exciting to watch and some of the best. Montana was my favorite QB.
Many of today's quarterbacks would not survive a 16 game season with the rules of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Absolutely 💪⚡️ I’m 59 soon and agree wholeheartedly ✊
True
They don’t survive now.
Absolutely, football was a different game then
I remember that game and I was so over joyed and screaming when that play happened. But I wish Clark still had the ball to keep. I heard he gave it to the ball boy
He actually kept it. It was in the documentary when they interviewed him, he showed that he kept the ball all that time.
I was at a buddy's house, with another half dozen friends from college, and we were all crouched in front of the couch and chairs we had been sitting on before this play. Everyone came off the ground at the same time because it looked like a busted play. Montana had Cowboys all over him, and it looked like he was just going to throw it away out of the back of the end zone. Plus, the camera angle made it look like Clark came out of nowhere. It was a magic moment that stands still in time and it was why the NFL was so fun to watch back during that time.
I loved this game SO much! I remember it like it was yesterday. So great to rewatch it.
Joe was possibly the best Quarterback ever! He was cool, and made people eat their words.
To bad he got traded to KC before it was over.
Not possibly he is the best ever, never lost a Superbowl
@@brucekay9290 so you telling me going 4 for 4 is better than going 7 for 10?

Tom brady will forever be the GOAT, montana is still a legend but brady is the greatest
@@ercihanates6504 yup
Greatest sport memory of my entire life!
Absolutely amazing what he could deliver under pressure.
Finally someone talks about the fact that they had scored on that same play in the first quarter.
Almost everything was perfect.
Joe pumped, Dwight doubled back, Joe fired, Dwight leaped to catch the ball.
All witnessed by Tom.
And captured by Peacock.
Only imperfection: 18 years later, they didn't draft Tom.
never tire of this.still gives me goosebumps
I was born 3 months after this play but I’ll never forget it
Joe Montana is the man bar none
Wow!!!!
No gloves, no fancy nothing, just pure talent!
The goat man it was fun watching him play
Both QBs had their struggles in this game, Montana had 3 picks and a lost fumble but when he needed to be great, he delivered! And Clark ended up with 8 catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Still the greatest ever Joe
I don’t care what team you root for. You gotta love Joe Montana.
I was 11 sitting in front of the TV watching that game. Danny white, Tony Dorset, Too Tall Jones. I wanted to see Dallas and Cincy in the superbowl.
That play sucked!
@@nickstrapko7549 I always thought Montana looked like Barry Manilow.
Years later Dwight and Joe would play-argue about who deserved the most credit for that play. Dwight would say “It’s called The Catch, not The Throw!” RIP Dwight.
Yes,,,, the SF 49ers with this Montana to Clark touchdown pass,, STUNG the Cowboys,,, just like how some six years earlier,, the Cowboys with the Staubach to Drew Pearson Hail Mary TD pass,,, STUNG the Vikings. Only difference is,, the 49ers did that in front of their own "home" crowd,,,, while the Cowboys did that on the road,, in front of the Viking fans.
This so sad. These old dudes reliving their memories.
Not sad. Memories are all we really have.
Can’t deny that the best quarterback of all time was in the stadium that day.
Yes, Joe Montana the greatest ever, certainly was in the stadium that day.
Brady was the guy you went with when a field goal would win. But if you had to get in the end zone, you gave the ball to Joe.
@Evil Monkey that’s exactly what I have been saying since Brady came into the league. That and Montana took over a 2-14 team, not a 9-7 team.
Last I checked Brady has the greatest comeback of all time against Atlanta.
@@noles9998 Montana is a better qb and played in era when the QB was treated like any other player
Love the WAY he, PLAY !! 🌅🌈😃🕯️🖌️🎨✨✨😀🌟✨☀️
Joe never had to "cheat" to win... He was from the era, "It's not if you win or lose it's how you play the game"!!! Loved Joe!!! After I got over him constantly beating up the "Rams"!!! 😂
Well, Brady was 4 years old, and I was 33. But I was right there in the end zone stands--I'll never forget!!
Montana Super Star !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Montana the best coreback I have ever seen
I saw this as it was broadcast. It stands with iconic plays:
Bart Starr's QB sneak to win the Ice Bowl
Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception
The Catch
Cheers
1:01 even the ref is hyped 😂😂
That was magic….which is the thrill of competition
I always appreciated this play, 100%. It might be a generational thing but I felt that the catch 2 was more impressive. Young threw that ball in the ONLY place it could have been, and Owens makes an amazing catch while getting blasted by defenders...
Dont follow US football and don’t know anything about this!… but it still gives me goosebumps… I guess sporting moments of greatness touch us all.
Maybe Beckham’s free kick against Greece in the last minute is close for us Brits. 🏉⚽️😅
Joe Montana makes the throw, Dwight makes the catch!
Tom Brady: hold my chocolate milk.
Now Montana is holding Brady's chocolate milk.
Perfect play
Bill Walsh is a LEGEND.
Eric Wright is the true hero of that game
I tried to like this video 87 times but it wouldn't let me.
The original Joe cool 😎 the catch that made him a legend hey he was 4-0 winning the super bowl had to be undefeated before Tom Brady he was the 🐐 !
Montana still is the 🐐
Joe was Tom's childhood hero. Rodgers too! Both wanted to get drafted by the 9er's, and I wish one of them were!
Joe Montana is the best bar none
I was 17 year olds and watch this and still get chills to this day
I thought that was just a well-thrown pass - Montana throws it perfectly so either Dwight catches it or it safely goes out of bounds. But what about the 'Immaculate Reception'? 1972 Steelers vs Raiders, 30 seconds left, Bradshaw throws on -the-run to Tatum, bounces off Tatum and a Raider Defensive back, looks like its going to be an incomplete pass until Franco Harris grabs it on-the-run just before it hits the ground and runs it past three Raider defenders for a TD that wins it for the Steelers.
People will never forget The Catch...but there were 50 seconds left in the game and the Cowboys were driving for a game winning FG...a lot of people don't remember the Niners defense making one last stand (sack/fumble of Cowboys QB Danny White) to seal the win...
Oh, yeah!
Wow 👏👏
Fabulous Freedie Solomon from the university of Tampa.
Joe says they practiced the play but the option part never quite worked.
Then he says they ran the play on many occasions in.games but NEVER ONCE threw it to Dwight!
So this was not only the first time they ran it in a game, it was the first time.it ever was succesful
Sheesh!
Amazing!##
I was there, and I'll say it a million times...If I had to choose 1 QB to win a game to save my life, it would be Joe...with Joe on the bench in case Leonard Marshall was close by.
The most iconic pass in football history is when Xavi passed the ball to Messi and than Messi passed true 5,6,7 playsrs including tk from his own half and scored.
Tnis really shoud have been called "the throw", because Clark jumped all of six inches in the air to catch a perfectly thrown ball.
Excuse me??? Check other videos. You'll see Clark jumping 2-3 feet in the air and had to stretch back to catch the ball.
I saw it live on TV. Will never forget that play.
Top 10 at most.
RIP Dwight Clark.
We need an ESPN 30 for 30 on the 80’s 49ers.
Or a docu-series similar to “The Last Dance”.
Joe and that 49er team was the only real dynasty.
I was at the game. It was so exciting, the best. BUT. Without THE TACKLE ( Eric Wright ), The Catch would have been just an afterthought.
Episode 1: 14:57
No, Ken Griffey Sr. was NOT a "high school classmate." Griffey was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1969. Joe Montana graduated HS 5 years later.
All I remember hearing was “He caught it! He caught it!”
I saw the game and l still believe Montana was throwing the ball away and Dwight Clark saved the day !
Yes, Dallas should have went.
Lol!
Not a chance. In other similar videos Joe said if he was going to throw it away he would have done it alot sooner.
Mark harmon aka agent Gibbs is narrating !!! 🔥
Tom brady was at that game??? thats legit legendary stuff right there
In keeping with Montana's general humility, it's called the "catch" not the throw.
Joe is a true People’s Champion QB. On the field he was Joe Cool of the field he’s an average Joe
GOAT
Brady played 6 years longer than Montana....enough said about all his records. Most are simply due to his longevity. Imagine what Montana would have achieved if he had played until age 44. Montana is the goat in my opinion.
He played 8 years longer. Joe missed 1991 and 1992 due to elbow surgery. Joe started 12 seasons. Tom started 20.
Tougher league
@@johnre5342 There are players who don't last 2 seasons in the toughest league of all. But Brady last 21. And Montana only lasted 12. So who wins that argument? Montana was great, no doubt, but Brady is far and away the greatest of all time.
@@thinkofitthisway7804 I don’t agree with you. It’s all subjective. I say the nfl was way more tougher on qbs in that era and you don’t. Enjoy the super bowl.
Dwight made it great
