Not sure that the 89 49ers get talked about enough as one of the greatest teams to win a Super Bowl. To go 14-2, be led by Joe Montana in arguably the best year of his career, and outscore your opponents 126-26 in the playoffs is remarkable
People would rather talk about the 85 Bears, who were lucky not to face the Dolphins in a rematch.
East Coast bias NYG were rivals. Everyone lists Bears but they didn’t shut out NE.
SF benched Montana in 4th could of been 70pts.
and they didn't exactly feast on a cupcake schedule
@@chrisuncleahmad789 - But haters like to pretend it was. All they talk about was how "soft" the NFC West was even though the Rams were competitive almost ever season since the end of the 70's when they went to a Super Bowl and played in an NFC Championship game and several wild card and division playoff games. Seriously, that Rams team could have won a super bowl or two if they hadn't had to face two of the best dynasties of all time (Steelers of the 70's and then the 49ers)

Worse than that, the NY criminals purposely injured Montana and he was out for the next season. Steve the choker Young started the 1991 season and lost so many games before Steve Bono took over the QB position and won every game the rest of the season. But the hole dug by the choker was too deep for the 49ers. The team missed the playoffs. The 49ers team was the best by the end of the season. The 49ers could have won that year's SB.
In the decade of the 1990s, the Packers, Cowboys, Redskins, or even John Elway's Broncos had much to thank Steve the choker who destroyed the 49ers.
49ers in the midst of their absurd 18 game ROAD WINNING STREAK! Of all the wild things that dynasty accomplished, that is the one that forever stands out to me.
Especially given the miles they logged with how far flung their division was. Also if you go back and look at their schedules back then, often they were starting the year with like 3 out of 4 on the road. Not sure if it was a Candlestick/Giants issue or what. In 1989 for example, they opened with 3 straight eastern time zone road games. That’s brutal
I remember that season
Really was a well oiled machine…
9ers still start out on the road except this yr
Their last road loss before that streak started was against the Cardinals in 1988 where the 49ers led 23-0 in the 3rd quarter only to have the Cardinals storm back and win 24-23 on a last second TD by Roy Green. The 49ers wouldn't lose another road game until the opening game of the 1991 season. Then, strangely enough they lost 5 of their first 6 road games that season with Joe Montana injured all season.

Holy crap, Joe put up those numbers while he was getting smacked around all day
I watched this game in 1989. Joe knew exactly which brands of deodorant Reggie White,Jerome Brown, and Clyde Simmons were wearing by the 2nd quarter. Joe was angry at his O-line that day. The niners O-line obviously didn't wear any deodorant that day because they stunk.
You should have seen our group from SF in the stands that day...Philly fans heckling us about the jail underneath, and us being from SF...all the while our team was getting beat up on the field for most of the day. I went into Veteran's stadium 25 years old, left about 39. The day got fun once we were at a local bar that night. Good times.
@@19Marksman79did they stink or they just played probably the best d-line in history?
@@Tone22845 both
To me this was the 89 teams most impressive win. And they had some others that year like that late season really against the Rams. Joe got beat half to death yet still pulled out a 200 yard 4 TD 4th quarter.
R.I.P Reggie White he was the heart and soul of those eagles defenses in the early 90s
I'd say the late Jerome Brown was. Reggie unquestionably was the best player tho.
Just imagine being a qb and going up against that ferocious Eagles d-line and on that artificial turf that was like playing on cement. Most qbs would've folded like a lawn chair after getting beat up like Montana did that day but he shook it off and buried the Eagles with an avalanche of touchdowns in the 4th quarter.
Tom Brady wouldn't have made it. He would've been crying like he was against the Bears last night.
I think that the GREAT GOAT DEBATE can be understood best if we think of framing the debate in terms of quantity vs quality. This game is my
main argument for the real GOAT, JOE MONTANA.
@@djeanpierre 49ers fan here...say what you like Brady is best QB ever. Yes his playing era has no hard astro turf, hard tackles but what Brady has done is ridiculous. We all grew up with number 16 JM and its hard to accept but he has been overtaken by Brady but he will also get bettered some day.
@TUFAII
Brady also played in some historically bad divisions for most of his career
The Eagles lost to Mike Tomczak, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, and John Fourcade, too.
Me, my wife and my 7 year old son traveled to Philly in 1989 to watch our first Niners game! My son and I wore our Niner jackets! We were harrassed because of it but it was worth it! At one point in the 3rd quarter we almost left, but boy I’m glad we didn’t! It was like someone flipped a switch and the Niners went from being down 28 to 10 to being up 38 to 28!
They were down 21-10 and 28-17 in the fourth. They were never down 28-10. Still, I’m with you. The Niners back then were amazing

Watching old games makes you realize how much the great coaches really stood out. 49ers were getting blitzed like crazy and they adjusted their offense to take advantage of a over pursuing eagles defense and help Montana get the ball out....the eagles coaches just kept calling the same gameplan no matter how much pressure Cunningham had in his face.
Ryan never developed an offense and was stubborn on D. He had a good defensive system but was too arrogant to adjust or cover for his weaknesses in the secondary. On offense, he just relied on Randall to make extraordinary plays, never developed his skills as a QB, and surrounded him with absolute garbage talent. Cris Carter was troubled despite his talent and Jackson was good/not great. The OL was shaky, the RBs were absolute trash, and the WRs were average on their best days.
I remember this game clearly as an emotional 11 year old 49er fan. Montana took a beating in this game.Sacked 8 times and took numerous hits. He was 11 of 12 for 227 yards and 4 tds in the 4th quarter. Unbelievable! Go 49ersl

Montana is and always will be the GOAT. Tough as nails. Great leader. People say he couldn’t throw the long ball. His arm strength was very underrated. He had some zip on his throws. That out he threw to Rice in the 88 NFC championship game should be enough to prove that point. To throw that pass in frigid temperatures that accurately is something few qbs could have done

Montana had another great performance 4 years later against another great Buddy Ryan Defense for bigger stakes. Houston came into that playoff on a 11 game streak.

I remember watching this game. Montana just got abused by the Eagles' D line in the first 3 quarters. If I'm not mistaken, I think he was sacked in that game something like 8 or 9 times, but went ballistic in the 4th. 4 for TDs and 227. For most QB's, that is a really good game, but Montana did that in a quarter. That is absolutely ridiculous. Probably the best game by Montana {or at least of them} as far as regular-season games go.
Lifelong Eagles fan here to say just wow man, i miss those days, i think that era of football was the best, so many great and talented players back then, and you had to be tough as nails as a quarterback, I had nothing but respect for Montana after that game, but Randall was and still is my favorite Eagles qb of all time, he was so fun to watch!
I was 6 years old watching this game with my Grandpa who was a big Montana & Rice fan. I had just started getting interested in football and understanding the game but only knew Michigan Wolverines football at that point. Rice's opening TD was the first play I saw then the game kind of fell apart and I was mostly playing with Legos in the corner. Later on he told me 'Now you watch, Joe Montana's a great comeback quarterback. He's gonna lead the 49ers to two touchdowns in this last quarter to win this game.' After the first one the Eagles scored again and he figured it was over but I reminded him that Montana just had to lead them to two touchdowns to win the game. 'Two MORE touchdowns though. They already got one, they won't get two more from here.' Well in a way, Grandpa was right. Joe Montana did not lead two more touchdown drives that day...he lead THREE MORE! How could I not be a Niners fan after that?!
Montana was a surgeon on the field and so cool under pressure.
I remember this game back in the day when you could bring the pain to the game lol!
That Eagles defense was a brute of a squad however the Niners had playmakers all over the place neutralizing that defense. Those were great football times.

Watch that battle against Reggie White. That is what I am doing.
The opening drive SF cut blocks him on the outside run and on the third down play Reggie gets his "hump" move where he flung the blocker with one arm, but Joe got the ball off and it didn't matter.
Back to the game.
Love the battles in the trenches
Good catch. The ‘hump’ move didn’t seem as refined. When he used that move while in Green Bay the results seemed automatic.
When he became a free agent the 49ers courted White but he refused to sign because he didn't want to raise his children in San Francisco. This is when San Francisco was still awesome. He missed out on living in a great city.

The over the top passes to a streaking Rice always get me. For a guy who allegedly had a weak 40 time...
I appreciate everything that Brady has done over his career and while it’s hard to compare era to era…It really was a different game when Montana was playing. I think when Joe was playing it was more like the eras before him then the era now is like the past. The players are so protected now, especially the QB’s. If Joe had been protected like Brady has been, OMG his numbers would be ridiculous in my opinion. While Brady is an excellent QB, having watched them both, I don’t think it’s even close. No one has ever had the touch and presence of mind during a tough game than Joe. He could do things back there that no one else could do and frankly I think that includes Brady. You give Joe that protection and his 49er teams get at least 2 more Superbowls and I think the Chiefs get at least 1 if not 2. What makes Joe even better is the fact that when you ask him who the GOAT is, he will say Brady. No arrogance, no grandstanding just a polite and quiet answer that says it all. Joe is the GOAT. Period. But Brady is right there in #2. :)
The 49ers have a QB now in Brock Purdy that is very reminiscent of Montana. The poise, pocket awareness, timing, touch, reading the defense, and the killer instinct that Purdy possesses are the best since Montana!
@@brettwheeler7753yes, and I was saying that when the Niners drafted him and between watching him at Iowa State and his rookie pre season there was just that cool, calm JoMo type of presence and of course at the time everyone was calling me nuts but fate would soon have its way and now he’s putting the world on notice. It’s almost kismet.
Purdy on the way though.
This is why he is the GOAT! Back when defenses could late hit & abuse QBs & wide receivers on the line, against probably the most ferocious pass rush of that era. He got knocked down on almost every play. He didn't panic, he picked himself up in the 4th quarter, bought time with his legs (something Brady can't do), and LIT the Eagles-up.
Probably one of the best defenses to ever exist and they just got crushed in the 4th quarter, the greatness of Montana and this Defense, truly the greatest team ever, the 1989 49ers
89 49ers are the best I've ever seen. 126-26 playoff scoring differential was insane to watch.

NFL rules made for a better game back then. Today you cannot touch QBs and every big clean hit gets flagged anyway. Notice how Montana tripped on his own feet a few times? Credit that to the Eagles whose constant pressure and knockdowns got in Montana's head. Couldn't work in today's rules. Today, most of those hits on Montana are judged as late hits and would be flagged. Eliminating mental pressure from the most important player on any offense changed the game permanently.
