I loved watching Joe Montana from Playing for Notre Dame all thru his NFL. No matter if they were down by over 14 points and there was only 4 minutes left for the game he would make huge plays and they would win . To me Joe Montana will always be the greatest Q.B that played.

IMHO the GOAT; and a great person too. He signed a football for me at a pre-game Super Bowl event in Indianapolis a few years back after he had retired. There was a huge line of people waiting to get his autograph and I'll never forget, he seemed in the moment, not rushed, not bothered; after signing, he looked me in the eyes and said something to the effect of "are you having a good time here? I said "yeah Joe and thanks for signing this ball he shook my hand and never broke eye contact and said "my pleasure"". That is a class act guy right there.

Montana never threw an interception in the Super Bowl. I know this is not a Team thing but look at the QBs he beat Elway, Marino, Boomer Esiason, & Kenny Anderson. Two of these are arguably the greatest QB's. These are the QBs that Brady has beaten, Jake Delhomme, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, Patrick Mahomes, Kurt Warner, Jared Goff, & Russell Wilson. He lost to Eli Manning twice and Nick Foles. I think Brady had 3 last minute/second wins. One was an INT by Malcolm Butler and Adam Vinatieri had 2 game winning kicks in the SB. Montana didn't need an INT or a game winning kick to win. Joe was just perfect when it came to crunch time. That's why his nickname is Joe Cool.

I grew up in that era so it's been hard to accept but there really isn't any debate that Brady is the GOAT. It pains me to even say those words but there really isn't any realistic debate. For every Joe moment, Brady's done it 3 more times and in bigger situations. Joe was magic, take nothing away from him, Brady has simply exceeded it through good fortune and longevity.

    • @breauxcewayne1971
      @breauxcewayne1971 Год назад +6

@@PickpocketJones Brady has also screwed up way more times than Montana did. Montana has a 16-7 playoff record. In 3 of those losses he was knocked out of the game on hits that would be illegal today. In 1990 he was knocked out of the game late in the 4th quarter of NFC CHAMPIONSHIP game. The 49ers were leading and if he doesn’t get knocked out they would became the 1st team to 3-peat as Superbowl Champs. In 1993 Its his 1st year in Kansas City and he has them in the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game and in the 1st quarter he got knocked out of the game with a concussion on a viscous hit. So he was very close to winning 5 or 6 Superbowls but because the quarterback wasn’t protected like they are today he didn’t get that opportunity. So not only is Montana 4-0 in Superbowls but teams had to pretty much knock him out of the game to beat him in post season. He didn’t need a lucky tuck rule call to advanced to his 1st Superbowl and he didn’t need a kicker to kick 2 game winnings kicks as time expired, a safety to make an interception on a play that shouldn’t have even happened because Seattle should of ran the damn ball, Atlanta to keep dropping back to pass when they were already in FG range and a FG wins seals it.
Yeah Brady made plays but he had so many things go his way and his longevity is due to the era he played in. The 1 year Brady got hurt the following year they make a rule that you can longer hit a QB In the legs. How much more protected can a player be when the NFL makes a rule based on your injury.
      Montana is the 🐐

Montana gets crushed by Leonard Marshall, gets broken ribs, a broken hand, bruised sternum and spine, and it's all in a days work. Brady gets an incidental touch on the shoulder pad and they throw the flag for roughing the passer. Surely you remember it since it just happened a few weeks ago against the Chiefs. I love how people complain that Prescott's line didn't protect him after giving him 5 seconds to throw when Brady finds an open receiver around 1.8 seconds. I do believe that Brady is not the best QB ever though and could not survive in any other system besides a Belicek system. If he played for a Jason Garrett team he would have been buried years ago. Montana was mobile and accurate. Brees might be the most accurate ever though and has the records to prove it. Montana played during a run-first era that trusted a great defense. People don't understand, Montana's domination at that time was unparalleled in SPORTS. It wasn't until Jordan in the 90s that anyone in sports could compare or exceed his level of domination during championship games. Tom Brady has had a greater OVERALL career with the stats and the amount of rings he has - BUT if my life were on the line and I HAD to pick ANY QB to win ONE big game for me - I'm going with Joe - he never lost. Where as TB12 has numerous SB losses. And playing in THIS era under THESE rules - Joe would have killed it even more so than he did.

Rice, John Taylor, Craig, against Lawrence Taylor, Lenny Marshall, and all of their nasty friends. Earlier in the season, it was the Niners 7-3 against the Giants on a Monday night game. Giants could not score a touchdown. Nor did they in this 1990 Championship game. Five field goals won the game. 15 -13. Those were some very dominating defenses. Thanks for the great video.

I remember seeing highlights of the 1983 NFC Title game where we had a 21-0 lead over SF going into the 4th quarter but we learned not to ever count Joe Montana out. He nearly brought you guys back to win the game. Hadn't it been for two controversial calls in the last minute of the game, it might have been 49ers vs. Raiders at SB18. I don't know of Joe cool is the best ever, but he is my favourite QB of all-time without a doubt. Always in control, and while not being the best athlete on the field, his athleticism has always been understated and underrated. He was great moving away from pressure, scrambling and throwing on the run. Football in that era was also nasty, with great and juiced up players that meant to hurt you every single play. Concussions were badges of honor, and bounties were also part of the culture. Montana was a tough player, as his system would expose him to crazy hits often, specially against teams that had great pass rushers and could keep the Rice, Taylor and Jones trio in check.
Taylor and Jones to me are hall of fame players, although I don't know if they have the numbers. But if it was up to me, Jones would be in for sure. And Rathman was an amazing west-coast fullback. But it all started and revolved around #16.

If he would have regularly played full seasons like today's quarterbacks do oh my gosh the stats he would have put up would have been absolutely crazy. Can't wait for Brady to play Garappolo and lose because Joe would not lose to Steve Young. I love Steve, but Joe is my guy. I realized how good Montana was after I watched a Dwight Clark interview one day. A lot of people try to say Joe was throwing that ball away, but Clark said, "No. We actually rehearsed that play in practice all the time. But every time we tried it in practice he either thew the ball too high or too low." So in other words, the only time Montana every got that play to work was when the championship was on the line and he was being chased by arguably the scariest lineman to ever live. If you think about that it better exemplifies how much ice was in his veins than John Candy.

Two of these are arguably the greatest QB's. These are the QBs that Brady has beaten, Jake Delhomme, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, Patrick Mahomes, Kurt Warner, Jared Goff, & Russell Wilson. There were glimpses of it in the few games I watched when he coached Stanford, but by 1980 there was no team in the NFL that had what I considered an unstoppable offense. I remember being laughed at and mocked when I told everyone that the niners were going to win it all that year. After all they went undefeated in preseason and won their first 3 games. 7 straight wins. After they lost their third in a row on their way to 8 straight losses, I just told everyone, if they ever get a good defense, they were going to be unstoppable. This is not at all a slight of Brady but I have to wonder how different Brady's game would be if he had to play back when there were less rules protecting the quarterback.
There is no mistaking that Brady is a great quarterback but I have to go with Montana as being the better of the two. I'm originally from the Bay Area and was there during the 49ers time so of course I will always go with Montana.
There was an article in a local Bay Area paper talking about Montana and Clark driving through Marin on their way to Huey Lewis's house. On a side street they passed a man and his young son playing football. One of them was wearing Montana's Jersey and the other Clark's Jersey. So what did Montana and Clark do? They pulled over, got out of the car, and played a little football with dad and son. To that young kid that was like if John Lennon and Paul McCartney joined me on the curb as I played my acoustic guitar. I would like to think that Brady and Gronk would do the same thing.

TL swog That hit was the only thing stopping Montana from at least 6 super bowls but probably 7 or 8 with the team they had.

Yeah, Brady may be tough BUT hits that Montana took were BRUTAL back then...Brady would have had a career ending injury with the constant beatings most QBs took and people forget 2 factors... there were more artificial turf fields which were in horrendous conditions... like playing on asphalt painted green... and the 2nd thing to note is... Montana suffered a spinal injury in 1986... operated on...and was backed playing in 6 weeks... herniated disc... someone ignorant please tell me that that's not tough...the man was incredible... he didn't have a powerful arm but you don't need that to run the West coast offense... just accuracy

The Niners , Joe montana man thank you for the memories....watching them play was my childhood..but man although number 7 was significant for the nfl as a whole ... that was just rough to watch again but it shows you how awesome joe was.... come back kid in so many ways and will always be the GOAT in my eyes.

I was at #2. I was sitting in the endzone where he was sacked for the safety. And the funny thing is that game started off with a 68 yard Montana to Rice bomb which was one of the most majestic things I've ever seen but after that the Eagles pounded him. And the score was only 12-10 Eagles at the half. And credit the 49ers defense to hold the Eagles to field goals in the 2nd half until they finally scored a TD to go up 28-17 then from then on out it was all Montana. They ended up winning by 10. It was probably the greatest football game I ever saw live.

Exactly. The man was the first QB in 36 years to take a undefeated roster to a SB. What happens: He folds like cheese and that's supposed to be the greatest?!? These TB rompkissers need to STFU.

@@CrystalDominique Better check the tape in that one. The super bowl that The undefeated Patriots lost, they lost to a team that nearly beat them in the regular season. The Giants were the only team in the NFL that year that had a defense that could slow them down.
And still New England had the champions heart to go down with about a minute and a half left and take the lead. They only lost because their defense couldn't prevent a helmet catch and a long bomb to the end zone over a 5 ft 8 cornerback with a 6 ft 5 receiver.
Did Brady have the ball last? No he did not.
As for the greatest quarterback of all time, that might be Roger staubach.
The Pittsburgh Steelers dominated every other team they played in the super bowl except the cowboys. The reason was Roger staubach's ability to adjust to their schemes. It usually took him about a half to figure them out, but once he did they couldn't stop him.
