When I think of Barry Sanders, I think of what an Incredible, Humble Human Being he was! He was obviously a Tremendous Football Player! However, he impresses me the Most by the way he has lived his life and the Respect that he has for everyone he comes in contact with! He’s a Humble and Incredibly Talented Football Player who is an even better Human Being! Detroit was Lucky to have Barry on their Team for ten years! If Barry had decided to continue to play football, he would have every record in the book, PERIOD! Records didn’t mean much to Barry and he quit the NFL because he just wasn’t having that much fun anymore! It took a lot of guts to make that decision knowing he was going to disappoint so many of his fans! I have the Utmost Respect and Admiration for Barry Sanders because he did what he thought was right and he followed his Heart in the end! God Bless Him!
yeah, I wish with all my HEART that they would have shown more of the HOF induction where John Elway says, "Mr. Sanders said he did not believe Barry Sanders was the GREATEST RUNNING BACK EVER, BUT I DO!"
Barry, not that you would ever read these comments, but you have inspired more young men into being better people than you will ever know. You are pure class.
Barry Sanders is not just the best running back in NFL history...he is quite possibly one of the best PEOPLE in NFL history. It was really hard to see him leave so early in his career, but it will never change my opinion of him; probably was best for his physical and mental health anyway. Just wish we had more people like him in our country...I've watched many interviews and documentaries of him and am often left speechless.
I met Barry at Detroit metro airport 20 years ago, and again 10 years after at his house, I was doing work at his neighbors. He is a standup, humble man, I have so much respect for this guy, a very selfless and good hearted human being.
Barry isn't the type of person America likes anymore. America idols self-complimenting braggarts who has never known a day of hard work in his life...see current US President for reference.
Best RB I’ve ever seen. I was in attendance in Baltimore for his very last NFL game. We didn’t know at the time that it would be his last game, but i still have the ticket stub and it means a lot today.
I was looking for myself in this video because I was at the Silverdome vs the Jets when he got his 2,000 yards. Too bad the video is not clearer because I am somewhere right down near the field. I think I had 5th row on the same side the video camera pans to.
Some people would never understand what its like to have a father like Barry's father. My dad was tough but fair. A father with principles is worth more than a pound of gold; it's priceless.
I always think about what if Gayle Sayers had not gotten hurt or if Berry & Jim stayed in the game...u can go on & on ...cause i like the big brewer back, Earl Campbell, Franco Harris, Zonker, H. Walker, the games has seen so many great athletes...
@@goomaguy2883 herbert walker is a freak athlete, didnt have quite the natural touch and footwork as sanders.. But he could probably make an nfl squad at 50-60 years old.
Detroit ruined and broke his spirit and love for the game. I can't blame the man for leaving when he did. After competing at that level for so long and always losing it just wore on him. GOAT. Definition of class.
Exactly n that is an ache far more than the body he just was tired of it, Calvin Johnson same thing never winning that shit sucks. They're living with good health n wealth in retirement n that's a championship to them💯💯💯
Lol nobody broke Barry Sanders spirit. This man is just a fucking cool guy who's not chasing stats he did his job and enjoyed his life and family and left at a healthy age. I think the biggest mark he left is so misconstrued.
It's hilarious to me though hearing that being a Detroit fan it's pretty sad that's our look lol it's completely not true though. Barry is a much much better man than he was a player.
Wrong. It wasn’t the losing that did it. It was that the Lions had pinned him to that contract, then dumped a bunch of their best players. Barry knew they were gonna suck, pretty much the remainder of that time. His risk of injury would also skyrocket. He even admitted that’s why he quit. But, not GOAT either, He was only GOHT (his)
All I have to say is Barry Sanders did it without a line...no doubt in my mind his record would not be passed, its 2022 now...Barry Sanders is my favorite all-time, there'll never be a running back with that loyalty, heart, humbleness and moves and I'm a die hard RAIDERS fan..God Bless you Barry Sanders stay humble 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

@Marso 13 - I never even mentioned those names as being "level headed", you did. As for talking about those who did what you speak of, I never mentioned them either. This thread is about Barry Sanders. If you would like to talk about other football players, it is your right to do so, but I won't.
As a 35 year old packers fan, I gotta say... not only is Barry the best I ever saw play, but ehat an outstanding man he is... my favorite rb of all time and It isn't even close
I've always marveled how firmly planted this man's feet in life was, for he treated the game of football just like it was created to be, (A Game) which is not bigger than life itself.
I feel so bad for Barry Sanders. He carried that team on his back for years. I'm from Chicago a long time Bears fan. It was a privilege and honor to witness his phenomenal mastery. My heart goes out to him. Barry was a straight up warrior and beast. He is the GOAT of all running backs.
I love that he knew there were bigger things in life than football and he didn’t let it control him. His character really does outshines the game and those football accomplishments. That’s the best way I can describe him. I honestly know more about him by his actions than by his football career. It speaks volumes for me. Well done, Mr. Sanders and well done, Barry. So much more to come. What a fantastic testimony. God bless…
I've seen this documentary about 5 times, I watch it solely because I've got a ton of respect for Barry. A true professional of the game, and has a ton of humility for being the best running-back of all time.
I ant believe people think anyone is better than him just as a pure runner lol anyone who brings up rings is stupid as hell. Rings are a TEAM accomplishment. Barry CARRIED the lions for 10 years and set records with a terrible offense. I just don’t understand how people argue against Barry. You’ll never see another human make cuts and shift like him. EVER
Been watching football a long time. Barry is the best RB I've ever seen. How he carried himself on and off the football is something you will never see again. Best RB of all time, and it's not even close!
And the fact that this superior character known as Barry Sanders.......could be divorced.......gives me hope.......I am far less a man......and divorced also........but if MR SANDERS can be divorced there is still a chance for me.
Nobody that watches football thinks Barry was the best RB of all time. Walter Payton is easily above him. Jim Brown is above him. An argument could be made that Emmitt Smith is above him. Barry Sanders was too boom or bust and didn't play long enough to matter. He was just another Gale Sayers, another guy who is in the Hall of Fame but who aren't nearly the best due to longevity reasons.
One can only imagine Barry Sanders running behind the offensive line that Emmitt Smith had. He would've broken every record there was... Barry was the greatest EVER, PERIOD.
Sucks imagining things like that. Us Cowboys fans feel that way about Jimmy Johnson. Feel we could've won 4 in a row but it was not meant to be. Barry fulfilled his destiny and accepted his fate. Maybe you should as well
Any GOAT, be it football, baseball, golf, basketball, hockey or any sport or game. The GOAT isn’t defined unless they possess the following: #1- work ethic #2- talent #3- the right team (support) #4- longevity We can imagine, predict and claim all we want. If “this had happened”, “if he was on this team”, “if only he wasn’t injured”. GOAT’s find themselves, put themselves or create the position to be the GOAT. Fact is, we don’t get to vote who’s the GOAT, stats cast the vote. If the vote was who was the most elusive, it would be Barry. Most speed, Bo. Most punishing, Jim or Earl. Fact is, Emmitt is the all time leading rusher today, he is the GOAT.
@@waltershattenkirk3087 Most yards does not equal best ever (GOAT); it just means most yards. If I had 1 game to pick one running back in his prime (or any year when we are talking about Barry), I would pick Barryover anyone else. Period. That's what the greatest of all time means. To say Emmitt is the GOAT is like saying Frank Gore is a better running back then LaDainian Tomlinson when you can easily see, that was never the case. In case you want to rebuttal that, I want to remind you that Gore has 1 season of more than 1,250 yards in a season.
Greg Wright I respectfully disagree. And if you go back and read the entirety of my post, you will see i consider the definition of GOAT to be highly subjective. You are defining GOAT as the most talented, in the case of Barry, I agree with you. He was a beast, unfortunately, after 10 years in the league, he said I’m done. Emmitt on the other hand, hitched his wagon to an up and coming winner. GOATS don’t hitch their wagon to loosing teams, if they do, they fall into the “what if/only if” category. Barry may be your favorite, he isn’t the GOAT. One more thing, my favorite NFL player, bar none, is Marino. The most talented passer the league has ever seen. Dan was the biggest fish in a small pond. Neither Dan or Barry fought to change their circumstance. For that reason, neither can be considered GOAT.
It's amazing to me why so many douche bags always feel like in order to talk about how great Sanders was they have to diminish Emmitt Smith's career accomplishments. Barry's highlights and stats speak for itself. Why do you have to disparage someone else in order to build up another?
I miss watching those games growing up with my dad in Michigan. He autographed a lions football for me. Such a nice guy and the best running back of all time.
As a Detroiter we were so proud of Barry Sanders and so blessed to watch him play. He was a marvel. He was the matrix before the matrix was even a thing.
He was the only thing you had for 9 or 10 years. That's not a slight on y'all, it's the truth though. I pulled for you for a long time to do right, but ya didn't.
BARRY SANDERS was the best thing that happened to that city... There was a time when the policy was clear... It was almost disgusting....blaming one side for 3 buildings falling at BREAKNECK SPEED... SEEMS THAT EVERYONE IS EVIL THQT READS
In a sport where I watched most any game that was on, the only other thing other than Thanksgiving, I watched y'all was Barry. Ever. Sorry, but Calvin Megatron wasn't enough.
Damn, I have so much freaking respect for Barry Sanders. I mean the man just understood what really matters in life. And the fact that he hated how football players were treated as if they were royalty or better then everyone else, to me, proves he's just a really good man. Who happens to be in the top 3 all time running backs.
Growing up as a young kid in Michigan I was a Lions fan and particularly a fan of Barry, but one thing that always stood out to me was how after a TD he would just drop the ball and go back to work.. it was so different from anything else I'd seen, and it made a lasting impact on me. I thought that's how I want to be. He was the epitome of humble.
Damn I teared up when I heard his father said I'm not your friend, I'm your father. My father told me the same thing. He was so right. I'm 65 and no longer have him around and i miss him terribly
I have more respect for Barry Sanders than for any other player to ever play the game. To be as great as he was while being so humble is rare. The NFL needs more Barry Sanders and less "everyone look at me" personalities. I doubt I'll ever see another player in my lifetime with his skill and character.
This guy is extremely well spoken. That’s refreshing. Without a doubt the greatest to ever play the position. His vision and instincts were 2nd to none. No one can ever duplicate him. Truly a marvel, he made all the right moves at the right time. Wish he had played longer but glad he’s healthy and possibly avoided CTE.
i'll never understand why people started disliking him.. 10 seasons s a runningback is amazing and long. Not to mention you didn't hear about him getting hurt.
Jesus, what a character Sanders! A great story of the hard-working dad leading his son in discipline. It is also a great story of that moment in America. " A football life " has consistently been so great, because of the emphasis on the person - not the stats. really wonderful.
Barry Sanders was the detroit lions in the 90's, he carried that team his whole career, but it takes a entire team to win a championship, not just one player.
Barry was the best broken field runner in history. Never be another 5'8" 205 that ran 4.3 and had explosive full speed ability in 3 steps. The JUKE, the balance, the vision, and the ability to slip the big hit. The GOAT!
I know someone who went to oSu with him, said he could 2-hand reverse flush a basketball like nothing. And this was when the world was going nuts over Spud Webb doing the same thing at roughly the same height. Just insane. I think it's in how quickly he adjusted to the tackler's force and was shifting his lean and stance instantly....well...when they could even touch him...lol.
@@gavinscott10 Barry was very durable but he did get hurt once early in his carrer with the lions and is scared the hell out of wayne fontes so much that he started pulling him out of goal line plays as he did not want barry to take any big hits. Prior to that Barry was in for all the goal line plays. Then somehow people twisted that into barry can't do goal line. That was directly due to fontes freak out on the knee injury.
It’s his humility that’s gives me the chills. I recently watched his interview with Pat Mcafee and I thought it was a front. But now I see that’s just who he’s always been. Truly amazing.
The man: Did not dance, did not boast, did not spike the ball, always handed the ball to the ref, never quit on a play,, was always humble, and always scared the living sh*t out of the opposition! Barry is arguably the best running back who ever played.
I second that. He's the greatest of all time in my opinion. I was very upset when he retired and still think of the what ifs but it's not about me, it's about him and how he felt.
There were so many more athletes like Barry Sanders in the 80s and 90s than today. The humbleness, respectfulness, lack of hubris, and the way the game(s) were played by guys like Barry Sanders, Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, and Dominique Wilkins (for example) was a breath of fresh air
That don't make him a hero...By handing the football back after a touchdown made him a professional!! I"m tired of people calling over payed cry baby athletes heroes
From a guy who was 14 when he came into the NFL. It was my privilege to get to watch this man play. The absolute best running back I ever have seen. If Barry would have had the line that emit Smith had. No person alive would ever touch the yards that man would have put up.
"and you're the guy and you are risking your neck, your body, your mind" Emmitt is spot on. The organization failed Barry and he lost the love for the game, gave it his all for years and walked away.
As a kid I used to love watching Detroit play on Thanksgiving day. You just knew Barry Sanders would do something special every game and he never disappointed! He was such a special player and person.
It just shows how sorry of a franchise the Lions are. I think any other team in the NFL would have easily built a Super Bowl championship team around this guy over a ten year period, but not Detroit.
@@jocamadad - Yes, the Detroit Lions Ownership failed Barry Sanders miserably. They had of the best running back of all time but they were too pathetic too damn incompetent to put the right Management teams and Coaches in place to support him. Truth. I was a Dallas and Pittsburgh fan all throughout the 90's. Barry was always the best, hands down. His football potential was robbed by the lions.
Curtis Martin quote “Jim brown if you put him in the game now it would be different, Barry Sanders it can be 1920 or 2020 he will be the best RB in the NFL at any given time.”
I think you can see how much he cared about his parents and how much respect and admiration he had for their actions and lessons. I am a proud lions fan. I understand why Barry did what he did. I know what he did, there will never be another Barry Sanders.
Barry Sanders was the reason that I started watching football. I was 15 and saw him on TV. I was like: who’s this dude making all them moves!? I was hooked after that. Barry is still my favourite player of all time and a great person too. 🐐!
He had good players around him. Herman Moore was one of the best wide receivers in the league. Brett Perriman was decent as well. They did not have a steady strong QB though and defensively they were outmatched by Green Bay in their division and by Washington, SF, and Dallas over the years unfortunately.
drvn8 Yup. Herman Moore was that man. Barry didn’t have a very Good line or QB which had a lot to do with that line and just goes to show you why Barry is The 🐐

Lomas Brown who was 7 time pro bowl and Kevin Glover who was a 3 time pro bowler You can make a case during the 90s the lions were one of the more talents rosters in the NFL. for some strange reason the lions were just a bad road team it also doesn't help that the Lions played musical chairs with the quarterbacks a lot of times.

37 less games and he woulda shattered the all time record had he not retired in the prime of his career. I don’t mean to be that guy man…but just don’t even bother trying to argue my point. There is nothing to argue.
@@clifton12345 hello, interesting but Walter Payton for most of his career played on terrible teams too. Gayle Sayers played on bad teams and as far as Jim Brown not being the best why don't you talk to Barry's dad about it. Different era or not some of those older players were great. Don't forget the rules changes to help the offense and water down the game.

Today's NFL could learn a few things from this man and his character.

As a young teen, Barry's retirement was heart breaking. He could have easily demolished the rushing record. The man was so humble none of that mattered.
Lb for lb
Was heartbreaking for me too. He was must watch television. You didn't want to miss what he would do next. Amazing the Lions never were able to put the players around Barry to go to a Super Bowl or even get close
Watching this for the first time. Waiting for the play agaisnt my Bucs where he puts John Lynch on his knees
When he retired I was Soo disappointed......his humility is sooo great that he never once complained------ about not being started in HS at running back.......about not being started ahead of THURMAN THOMAS at OU.......about his Detroit offensive line.......such a great role model for all of us
When I think of Barry Sanders, I think of what an Incredible, Humble Human Being he was!

Barry Sanders was a class act, and still is. One of the all time greats. It’s to bad he played on a horrible team.
Exactly. Put Barry on the Cowboys and Emmitt on the Lions and Emmitt would still be chasing. Emmitt played 80 more games than Barry.
His father is why he quit..not the team. Who in the hell wants an asshole father like that
Yes he had to create things out of nothing
Emmitt smith had a Hof line to.
That team is still horrible the Bobby lane curse!

Some people would never understand what its like to have a father like Barry's father. My dad was tough but fair. A father with principles is worth more than a pound of gold; it's priceless.
The only thing greater than his talent is his character. He represented my hometown of Wichita very well.

But, not GOAT either,
He was only GOHT (his)
All I have to say is Barry Sanders did it without a line...no doubt in my mind his record would not be passed, its 2022 now...Barry Sanders is my favorite all-time, there'll never be a running back with that loyalty, heart, humbleness and moves and I'm a die hard RAIDERS fan..God Bless you Barry Sanders stay humble 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

The GOAT isn’t defined unless they possess the following:
#1- work ethic
#2- talent
#3- the right team (support)
#4- longevity
We can imagine, predict and claim all we want.
Fact is,
Emmitt is the all time leading rusher today, he is the GOAT.

What’s missing in sport today at every level is what Barry stood for.
Humbleness, dedication, and humility!

I have more respect for Barry Sanders than for any other player to ever play the game. To be as great as he was while being so humble is rare. The NFL needs more Barry Sanders and less "everyone look at me" personalities. I doubt I'll ever see another player in my lifetime with his skill and character.
"In football, you're gonna make some mistakes.... But, it wasn't for the lack of trying". This is the quote I live by ever since.

Barry Sanders was the detroit lions in the 90's, he carried that team his whole career, but it takes a entire team to win a championship, not just one player.

@@gavinscott10 Barry was very durable but he did get hurt once early in his carrer with the lions and is scared the hell out of wayne fontes so much that he started pulling him out of goal line plays as he did not want barry to take any big hits. B.Sanders was a team by him self.
Literally, because he had a sucky team around him. He is probably the greatest back of all time.
He had good players around him. Herman Moore was one of the best wide receivers in the league. Brett Perriman was decent as well. They did not have a steady strong QB though and defensively they were outmatched by Green Bay in their division and by Washington, SF, and Dallas over the years unfortunately.

Proud to say I was at the Jets game and saw the greatest running back in my time break 2,000 yards. If the Lions ever had a QB during his 10 years Detroit could have went to the moon. We'll never know but thank you Barry for 10 awesome years.
