This has to be one of the craziest games/endings ever. Social media would’ve blown up if it existed at the time.
Imagine if Twitter existed during this time😅😅
@@jacobwisherd5864 it would’ve been fun 😂
Social media did exist in this time, but it was very small
It would have been just the regular chat services like AOL, IRC, yahoo messenger, and a few more I can't remember now, but nothing like Twitter or youtube.
@@collinghood6828 it wasn’t no social media back then even MySpace didn’t even exist 🤣 only thing I remembered back then was the dial up internet idk if you recall Juno etc
This game was the last gasp of the 49ers success that began in the 1980s.
Spencer Hill yep. Then came 8 years of losing seasons.
Not bad... 20 years of dominance. Most dynasties only last a decade before they crumble
@@matto4897 Well, the dynasty they superseded or replaced at least in the NFC after defeating them in the 1981 NFCCG, Dallas Cowboys, it lasted from the mid-60's to early 80's, although some NFL fans, historians, insiders, writers will insist, with some justification, that the Cowboys were sort of decline already by early 80s. Danny White had already lost one NFCCG the year before, 1980, to a good, talented Eagles team but his inconsistent play and lack of big-game heroics compared to his predecessor, Staubach, raised a lot of doubts about whether he could win a NFC title much less than a SB. I think even if Drew Pearson isn't horse-collared by one finger at midfield or White doesn't fumble and Dallas wins, I don't see them beating a more complete, competitive Bengals squad 2 weeks later in Detroit. 49ers nearly lost a 21-0 lead to Cincy anyway and needed a key 4th and goal stop to edge them, I can't Dallas doing any better. 1981 was Danny White's best and only year to really show his critics he could be a big-time, franchise QB who could win a close, intensely fought game and he failed. After that lost opportunity, his career and that of the legendary, almost-mythic Tom Landry Cowboys were in a deep, decade-long decline.
49ers dynasty, IMHO, started it's slow decline in the mid-late 90s with the rise of GB, Favre emergence as an 3-time MVP winner, that dominant, overwhelming defense of Reggie White, Santana Dotson, Eugene Robinson and it's interesting their HC, Mike Holmgren, was a former 49ers assistant under Walsh who knew, understood, and helped developed his West Coast offense under Montana and Young. Plus, San Francisco and Dallas had begun to take their yearly success for granted, IMHO, by mid-90's and underestimated how determined hungrier, meaner teams like Packers were and how they wanted to dethrone them. That's kind of what happened. First GB overtook Dallas as NFC champs, then they began beating up on Niners in the postseason. For 3 straight seasons, 1995-97, Packers eliminated Niners from playoffs and it took a miracle, last second "Catch II" TD by Owens to prevent a 4th straight postseason defeat in 1998. And I think the chaotic nature of Niners ownership at the time with Eddie Debartolo Jr. facing federal corruption charges over bribery, extortion with Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards in 1997 that led him to cede ownership to his sister caused a huge chasm in running the team responsibly. Salary cap violations, poor draft picks, mediocre FA pickups and trades became the norm after he left and as arrogant, difficult, and demanding Eddie Debartolo could be as an owner, those same qualities positively helped him build a NFL dynasty to match Dallas beginning in the late 70s. Hiring Bill Walsh, allowing him the creative space to develop his WC system, draft players he felt fit his system best like Montana, Clark, Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, Rathman, John Taylor, Randy Cross, Brent Jones, Charles Haley, Keena Turner, Ronnie Lott, Dwight Hicks, trading for a talented but erratic USFL cast off and seeing the enormous, raw potential in Steve Young few else did, Walsh built the team by drafting or trading for these guys, but it was Debartolo's money and his own unique vision. That's why he's as much of an administrative genius as an owner as Bill Walsh was an innovative, creative coaching genius and that symbiotic relationship revolutionized the NFL, offense's play-calling, and why both are in the Hall of Fame. If Eddie Debartolo Jr. Isn't in Canton, he should be. He's just as deserving and his resume speaks volumes for his inclusion as much as as Jerry Jones does, if not more. If anything, I believe Jerry Jones might be one of the most overrated owners in NFL over the past 30 years. His teams haven't advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 1995 and he's only won 3 playoff games since 1996. There's an entire generation of Cowboys fans who don't know or remember when they were SB champs last or their playoff success was seen almost like a foregone conclusion.
Man I still love them tho and I think we can start doing better.
We got a shot at the superbowl this year! NFC championship up next 😎

Jeff Garcia was so underrated, that dude was a baller!

What Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks he is
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Hey jackass, I bet you think you’re clever, but no one made the argument that Garcia should be put in the hall of fame, it was just noted that he was an underrated QB
Not even saying this in hindsight, but my late father said after Shockey's drop at 7:48..."if they don't score on 3rd down, that's gonna come back and bite them in the ass". He was as usual, right on the money.
Loved it because he was cocky and showboating.. players like that are always humbled.

They were winning 38-14 when he dropped it.
I remember drinking a couple beers watching this I thought to myself maybe San Fran upset the bucks next week and beats the eagles too and we have a battle of the bay
Boy that ending was pure mayhem.
@@disneydanny2 No, the league admitted that it wasn't right. Seubert (#69) had reported as eligible, so Okefor (#91) did commit PI. The officials did mess up. That being said though, the Giants still lost this game on their own merit. When a team blows a 38-14 lead with a quarter and a half left, it doesn't deserve to win.
@@disneydanny2 It was incorrect call period. WTF would the Giants "pay the NFL to lie by saying it should've been PI."? That makes no damn sense at all.
During the game, they said "the penalties offset." But usually when penalties offset, they say, "replay the down." So, why wasn't the down replayed even though there was no time left? Is that a rule that if there's no time left, they don't replay the down?
@@jaws3772 No, not if there is no time left on the clock. The game only cannot end on a defensive penalty. Offsetting penalties negate that rule.
Jaws 3 to clarify, it is impossible to have pass interference on an ineligible receiver. So, if the receiver wasn’t eligible and a pass interference flag was thrown, the interference is not allowed to count since the receiver initiated the illegality of the play, so they don’t offset, they more cancel the other out. However, the intended receiver was, in fact, eligible, which was a blown call by the refs, in which case, the interference call should have stood, and would have given the giants another chance to kick the field goal.
That Fox 2001-02 score bug was my favorite one ever. So clean and they great noise it made after a score. Ah, childhood memories
It lasted from 2001 to 2005.

If I were TO I would’ve went to Strahan at the end of the game and pointed at the scoreboard lol
oh you know he fucking tried though LOL
Jeff Garcia was a beast back in the day.
Indioprophecy81 agreed
Learned from Steve young
Incredibly underrated QB
T.O. wanted the ball more. He always blamed lack of production on Jeff Garcia being so short and not being able to throw long bombs.
So to keep him happy the organization made a move and put Tim Rattay in. He wasn't anywhere is good as Jeff Garcia but he could throw a long pass accurately. I can remember Owens dropping the ball repeatedly all year.
Jeff Garcia is one of the biggest system QBs to ever play. Put him in the West Coast offense and he thrives. Take him out of it and he can't do anything. Cleveland and Detroit learned this the hard way. Then he goes to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and plays solidly again under two other West Coast offense coaches.
This day was also the last time Cleveland was in the playoffs.
no sir
They blew a 24-7 lead lol
Brandon Ohara the Steelers

Matt Bryant lost the game for the Falcons on 10/13/2019. He is still racking up L's to this day 17 years later.
@@HPmob420 not really sure if u can blame him for this game. The snapper had 2 horrible snaps in a row in the 4th quarter.

This was one of the best playoff weekends of all time in my opinion, certainly one of the most memorable as well. The night before, Vick and the Falcons handed Green Bay it’s first ever playoff loss at Lambeau Field. The next day, my beloved Steelers came back from 17 points down to beat the Browns in what is still my second favorite game of all time (after Super Bowl 43), and then this gem to cap it off. Great time to be an NFL fan
2003 Divisional Weekend way better. The 4th and 26 game, Rams vs Panters double OT game, chiefs vs colts two top 5 offenses, and titans vs patriots was a good one too
My nephew was born during this game, we almost got thrown out of the hospital! Watching this game in the maternity waiting room it was insanity! #Niners4Life
In 2019, as a Giants fan, this game still pisses me tf off.
@Joshua Eh, I wouldn't be too certain. We have to remember: the Giants had caught fire at the end of that season and carried that over into this game. The Bucs had gone ice cold to finish the season, including laying a HUGE egg against Pittsburgh in Week 16. Had the Giants kept their foot on the gas this whole game, the following week would've likely been something to see.
Fah Blizza sucks for you, let it go😂😂😂😂

Wow these were the years they were in their prime and when I was growing up playing Madden lol.
9:20 Did Strahan really point at the scoreboard?
He really did!
Yes, yes he did. Remember it like it was yesterday. I was 17 and going wild at the TV that day. When the Niners won I wanted to shit in him and Shockeys helmets when the clock hit 00:00. I might have to remind Strahan on twitter. 🤷♂️
The story goes Strahan was tired of Owens and his cockiness and he got back at him by indicating the 49ers were still down.
Strahan and T.O., two of the best trash talkers of all time with the talent to back it up
Yup. Buck's commented on that too. Then after Garcia's rushing TD, he commented that the scoreboard didn't look so attractive to Michael Strahan anymore.
Buck, Aikman and Collinsworth all at once. Yikes.
Lmfao!!!
Ikr
Really made you miss Madden and Summerall hearing these 3 clowns
Buck has improved so much, and when you watch these old videos you can really see it. He used to be so terrible.
That was 16 years ago and Chris Collinsworth still roots against the 49ers. He is still butthurt about losing to them twice in the Super Bowl. They never let him have a ring.
This is real football
49ers can't tackle
Hell yea !!! They was out there competing at a high level
One of my greatest memories as a 49ers fan. This game got super chippy, especially late. I remember jerk Michael Strahan taunting Owens by pointing at the scoreboard when there was still a big deficit. Then after the game he's walking angry back to the locker room. That was awesome. Too bad the following week the 49ers got squished like a roach against the Buccaneers. Ugh.
TheLoneDraftsman agreed, that was devastating
But top 5 all time defense was ready to shut up t.o.
Giants paid back Garcia and Owens for this loss in 2007...and the 49ers organization in 2011.
well i bet terrell owens was talking his regular trash too
And we trashed you in the playoffs 2007..cry about it
What a game! Should never have even been a chance for the niners or that horrendous kick attempt at the end for the giants, but there you go... I remember going to school the next day and all the giants fans were sooooo pissed, I was so happy until the next week when Derrick Brooks and that top 5 all time defense clobbered SF. Julian Petersen, garrison hearst, Kevin Barlow, Bryant young, Jeff Garcia. The niners weren't good again till Harbaugh. It's been a rough go as a SF fan post all those great super bowl wins. Here's to hoping for more greatness to come!Thank you for your time.
The 49ers made a _huge_ mistake firing Steve Mariucci, all because he and management didn't see eye-to-eye (guess some things never change *cough* Harbaugh *cough* ). Then they didn't have a backup plan in place, so they had to settle for Dennis Erickson, which made no sense because Erickson already proved he was a college coach during his first run.

I was hoping for the 1990 game.
that 2011 game was legit. gained so much respect for eli that game. dude took an absolute beating but hung in there and won the game.
@@systalticquiescence I prefer the 1990 game because it changed the course of NFL history. That was the game that ended Joe Montana's reign as the 49ers starting QB and began Steve Young's, ended the 49er dynasty for all intents and purposes, and was a factor in opening the door to the Cowboys dynasty that was still in its building stages at the time.

@@disneydanny2 would that be "Traders" or "Traitors"? Because it could be either one (or both).
Collinsworth still hurt about losing to the 49ers that he's rooting for the Giants even as a broadcaster
I remember this game and quite honestly, when the Niners were looking to be dead and buried I kind of tuned out but was hooked as they were making the comeback. That ending was pretty gut wrenching even if you're not a Giants fan. PI should've been called on that play at the end but alas it was missed.
Illegal man downfield
@@JamesPawk07 Actually from Wikipedia:
The Giants were also called for having an illegal man downfield on the play, and the game ended. The following day, it was revealed that the penalized player (guard Rich Seubert) had in fact checked in as an eligible receiver before the field goal attempt, although a different Giant lineman (guard Tam Hopkins) actually was illegally downfield. NFL Vice President of Officiating Mike Pereira admitted pass interference also should have been called on 49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor for pulling down Seubert. Had the two right calls been made, the down would have been replayed at the previous spot, the San Francisco 23.
I can back this info up as I distinctly remember Pereira's statement the following day.
Ok u win lol
If the Giants had taken care of business, it would have never been an issue.
The P.I. technically WAS called. The problem was that there was an Ineligible Man Downfield from the Giants (seeing as how it wasn't supposed to be a Fake FG and players were just scrambling about without any regard for rules). So the two penalties offset one another. There are rules for Offensive Linemen on pass plays, but the NY Special Teams ignored those rules and had Linemen downfield which is outlawed. Don't worry... I completely understand that feeling you have when such a big game comes down to one play that doesn't go your way. I feel that way every time I think of how Kyle Williams gift wrapped that NFC Championship and handed the victory over to you guys in 2012 in Overtime, nonetheless! I'm 35 years old, and I weep like a 10 year old girl every time.

We told him that the niners won.. he was shocked! For GP.... he had the game recording while we were out... and he's reliving this moment until this day!
Still a bitter loss for NYG fans to swallow... I forgot about the Shockey missed TD... But big blue gave payback in 07 to Garcia in Tampa then the best of all to TO in Dallas the next week... The next week closed out Favre's Green Bay career & last but not least took care of those 18-0 guys...
What a run. And then in 2011 beat the 49ers to go to the Super Bowl and win again.
This loss was like a "purge" for the Giants. A lot of locker-room cancers left the Franchise from 2003 to 2006. From 2004 to 2007, the Giants made quality Free Agency signings and nabbed some damned good Draft Picks. It all paid off long term. 👍👍

Same man - my dad already was a Niners fan but this game did it for me
TO was clutch as hell and a BEAST. Definitely #2 just behind JR.
Toomer was the best wide out on the field that day.
Absolutely not, DarkMadder. Roomer was torching Ahmed Plummer, who was an average Nickel Corner at best. And the 49ers Defense didn't even double him; they left Plummer on an island with Toomer all day. Owens was getting doubled and covered consistently by the Giants' best DBs. Having a better Game statistically does not automatically constitute saying that the actual Player was better. And we can even factor "clutchness" into it. Toomer's work was done early, but Owens's work was done when needed most. Look at that last pass to Toomer that was uncatchable and out of bounds... the DB didn't touch Toomer at all, but he still looked around at the Ref trying to get a sympathy PI call. SmH
As a 49er fan I remember this game.. how was such a huge Terrell Owens fan back then. Even before he was to I still like them when you came as a rookie and I told everybody that this is my favorite player and I thought he had a chance to be a really good player for us and they all laughed at me.. also I was watching this game over my friends house but he had to go to work and there was a girl there it was his mom's friends daughter... and it was first time I met her and it was weird because we clicked really good and watch the game together and after the Niners one I gave her a hug is she left and I don't even know her name because I didn't ask and it was actually the last time I seen her.... so because of that it was a good memory for me
What?
I initially thought the call at the end was correct - seeing #69, a lineman, running downfield while the passer still had the ball seemed like he was obviously illegally downfield and you can't have pass interference against an ineligible receiver. Turns out that the guy was eligible but there was no way to know that in real time. Officials should have though.
Ineligible receiver was called on 65 Hopkins not bober
@@hotelgraffitiofficial correct; however, there's no pass interference on an ineligible receiver so they didn't call PI because they thought the man dragged down was ineligible. Yep. The Giants' season started and ended with losses to the Niners.
I remember watching this live. Before the final play, Fox showed the NY side and the NY long snapper. I thought, _Who the hell is this Junkin dude?_ Years after, I had to do some digging to find out who he was, because I did not find him on the NYG roster for 2002. After reading about that playoff game I finally found out who this Junkin dude is. He was recently retired and the NYG coaxed him into returning just for that one game because their long snapper Dan O'Leary was hurt. I was rootin' for the G-men to win that game, and it turned out that they should have gotten a second chance due to bad call (legit pass interference because Seubert was indeed declared eligible but the ref forgot), but they ruled the game over, Steve Marriucci, desperate not to get fired (he got fired after the next game which he lost against Tampa), capitalized on the bad call. I felt really sad for Junkin, who manned up and took responsibility for that loss (unlike Mariucci, who looked the other way on the bad call), but I couldn't have seen NYG beat Tampa which was way too good anyway. *Trey, if you are reading this:* I will always remember you, but I will always forgive you.
I was never a Mooch fan, but what's he have to do with it? You think Lombardi or Parcells tells the ref it was a bad call?

tbh I’m hoping for my niners to play these guys in the playoffs this year if we make it. Would be another absolute classic
How about in '86 when Jerry Rice fumbled on his way to a clear touchdown? Cost the Niners what some people claim would have been the critical insurance score to put some distance between them and the Giants...
Joe Buck has always been a monotone vampire, sucking the life out of potential great calls.
He almost died because of hair plugs. Add that to the list of fails in his life.
And his talks how was TRASH. They need to replace Buck with Gus Johnson.
@@crashstitches79 Seeing any other game either in baseball or football is a nice to listen to. As if Joe Buck wants you to view a different game or sport.
Oh, screw him for that Randy Moss mock mooning. No fun Buck who tried to take over Bob Costas show, which I didn't know exist, until the internet mocked Buck! This freaking guy!
@@crashstitches79 Gus Johnson use to do NFL games. I think he only does college now. He's got the famous stokley catch for a td call
Smash Marxism he’s good now, but he used to be terrible
Brock Purdy was only 3 years old at this time. Time flies sheesh😂😂.
This is one the greatest comebacks in NFL history and also one of the best postseason wins by our Niners. After that things got bad unfortunately… .
This and the flipper Anderson game was 2 of the most heartbreaking losses for me. Let's face it Giants deserved to lose this game with the lead they had. Jeff Garcia Owen's and company were great in that game. We got revenge in 11
Kerry Collins and Jerry Garcia are underrated QB's
Kerry Collins was a properly-rated Drew Bledsoe-esque slow footed rocket armed turnover machine and Jerry Garcia was the guitar player for the Grateful Dead
Lmao@ Jerry Garcia! Have u also heard of Ben and jerry’s Ice cream? It was named after that 49er “quarterback “
Only Garcia.
fixxxer3456 People forget about Jeff Garcia. He was actually a very good QB. It’s just he gets overshadowed by Joe Montana and Steve Young.
Last Niner game I watched before shipping off to Army Basic training in January 2003....
This was truly old school and back in the day for the giants, it was Jim Fassel Kerry Collins tiki barber and their road uniforms were different!
Lol @ 12:30 Cleveland in the playoffs 😆
Very last time they even got close to sniffing the playoffs. And if memory serves, Browns had a 21 point lead before Steelers came back to win.
That’s a shame.. they seem to be on the rise though. I think they’re just a few pieces away from being contenders.
They were really close in 2007. They went 10-6 and would have won the division if they had won one more game or if the Steelers lost one more game.
wpjohnston0213 yep Dennis northcutt dropped the potential game sealing first down
And to think that game ended up being a sneak peak of the wild one which this became also! The Browns like the Giants, should have won it too.
Dan Campbell 89 coming back 2 get whiped in the bay again this weekend
Jeff Garcia was throwing Dimes omg 😱 he was really like that 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Loved Shockey after watching him at University of Miami. Too bad he was always banged up. He was a Hall of Fame talent.
Great game I was 11 praying to God for a comeback and then we did that's when I knew faith is legit
@9:20
That's what started all this... Owen's scores and gets a 2 point and Strahan comes up to Owens talking sh*t pointing up at the score board. Karma's a b*tch.
My favorite image is of Michael Strahan walking off the field at the end shaking his fists, lol
Very hard to believe this was 20 years ago what a game
ha I remember this like it was yesterday.. Strahan still crying haha
Best pick celebration at 0:45
One of the greatest games ever.
What a game!!
The Falcons watched this game and studied the Giants before the superbowl
TO was a baaaadddd maaaann!!!
That was a great day to be a Niners fan.
One of my all-time favorite games. So glad to beat the Giants.
