  • My Cross Fire bails me out again! Needed another piece like in my other 1" video. My Cross Fire keeps right on doing it's thing. 1" mild steel piercing is hard on things as you see in the end. Still sticking to my 3.6 second pierce delay and 16 IPM is about the top for my Hypertherm 85. I tried pushing close to 20 IPM, but my arc becomes a little too willing to pop to the top...

Hi! I have the same setup as you, hypertherm 85 with langmuir table. When i want to do 1" thick parts, i switch my torch with permanent marker and mark my plate. When it's done, instead of using my torch to pierce, i use my magnetic drill. It save me a lot of consumables ;)

That's a smart idea! Most times I'm in too big of a hurry, but yes, I have a mag drill I could use as well. I generally have a stash of worn consumables that are a great sacrifice for my 1 inch pierces. 😉

Also, I would love to see more of the 24" x 48" Crossfire you built. I would like to do that too, but it seems I never find the time, and I would hate to take the table out of service while I'm modifying it...

@@joshuazimmerman8631 The modifications was all made in one week-end. I will try to make a video on that soon and a parts list. I am also really busy between my full time job, and my home machine shop...

Still amazed all the sparks don't destroy the laptop. I keep my laptop on a shelf away from the sparks and use one of those silicone funnels as a shield on the torch. I'll never be doing anything thicker than 1/2” though.

    Dude, I have a Hypertherm 45, that 85 is just a beast.

Dang man 1"..... you need a spark shield on that sucker. Way better than freehand. Nice work

Try piercing at 0.42", it will avoid damaging the shield, nozzle and retaining cap. Do edge start, you will save hundreds.

I'm beginning to learn Mach3 and was wondering how you configure it to do all the piercing holes first (with torch set at the proper piercing height), pause the program, lower the torch to the proper cutting height, then resume the program to do the actual finishing cuts. Is this possible with Mach3?

All the settings you are referring to are set in Fusion 360 or SheetCAM. Mach 3 will just follow the G-code created by the post processor of your choice....

@@joshuazimmerman8631 Got it, thanks! Any tips on where in Fusion 360 i find these settings? I'm familiar with Fusion 360 and poked around but nothing jumped out at me. Appreciate any tips!

From within Fusion 360, after you have created a setup within the fabrication tab, you add a toolpath to that setup. Once that toolpath has calculated in Fusion 360 with all the proper lead-ins and lead-outs, you can run a simulation to see if it is going to do what you want. Then, you click on the post process tab which generates a G-code file that can be read by Mach 3. It is in the dialogue that pops up when you post process your toolpath where you set your pierce height, your pierce delay, and so forth...

Is that the cnc head on yours? I ordered my hypertherm 85 with the straight stitch head but thinking about exchanging for the pistol grip torch.

Yes, this is the mini machine torch. To have the torch fire from the CPC port, a machine torch should be connected. A pistol grip hand torch requires wiring modifications to be fired by the machine controller.
