Guy in the red shirt is actually jazz trained. His name is Synyster Gates and I highly recommend listening to his acoustic performances, which he records in his free time.
Brian Haner, or synyster gates (guitarist in the red shirt) really does run the show from a songwriting perspective in the modern age of Avenged. They have a great series on their band's channel called Breakdown and it's quite obvious listening to him he's insanely knowledgeable about music theory and a total nerd about technical playing, and their current prog direction is heavily influenced by him.
You mention the vocal harmonies. This song is a dedication to the bands late drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away in 2009 from a drug overdose. The band literally grew up together, so this was a pretty huge loss and if you ask me they haven't been the same since. The Rev was an insane drummer, deserves separate reaction videos in his own right, but what he did that really stood out in this band was that he wrote a lot of the songs and as a result would provide the backing/harmony vocals while simultaneously hammering out insane double kick drum parts. Was really something to behold. Check out Critical Acclaim - Live in the LBC as an example (or A Little Piece of Heaven if you are feeling dangerous).
Saw them opening for Metallica in Ireland years ago. Someone threw up an Ireland football shirt to M. Shadows and he put it on immediately and wore it for the rest of the set. Then they brought up a randomer from the crowd to sing Pantera's Walk and he was pretty good, definitely a memorable show even though I didn't know much about them at the time.
Listen to "Cosmic" from their most recent album or maybe something like "Danger Line" or "MIA", this song (and performance) isn't their usual "genre", as its one of their ballads (and a meaningful one at that, taking into account its backstory), so I think you can get more out of other songs, Michael!
I always love playing this song for my wife. Very easy chord pattern. Solo is pretty simple too. My favorite is the finger picking section right before the bridge. Just a great song! I always teach these chords to anyone that wants to learn to play so they can play this.
Again, the guy in red shirt is Brian Haner, Jr. If you’ve seen any Jeff Dunham comedy specials he has Guitar Guy on a lot of them, that’s his dad. Also, the normal solo isn’t much different than what he actually plays.
The only thing I know of them is "Bat Country" from the early 2000s and the newest album Life is But a Dream. A lot of their "fans" don't really like that album , but I think it is a pretty interesting prog album, more so than most modern "prog metal" bands.
Funny thing, Bat Country was on the City of Evil album, and when that album first came out a lot of their "old school" fans at the time thought that was too big a departure from their previous style, lol, and these days everyone says they were never the same after the Rev passed, but I think they've continued to evolve and sound great, can't please everyone I guess
I love Life is But A Dream, fantastic record imo. My fave is Waking the Fallen, right before Bat Country era (City of Evil album I think), but their latest rocks
To comment on what you said about the solo... The recorded version, he actually uses less notes on this one. Single ringing notes with a sustainiac pickup, and fits the song very well.
When you said "the guitar player in the red" without realizing that it's Synyster Gates (aka one of the greatest guitar players of his generation) I had to laugh haha
Happy to see Mike do Avenged, sad it's such a sleeper choice. Yes, So Far Away is a great song, but there are so many more impressive guitar things that could've been covered from other Avenged songs, here.
About 20 years ago doctors told him he might not be able to speak, let alone sing ever again from several surgeries involving vocal cord nodules. The fact that he can still sing is pretty impressive.
Hi Michael, do you read comments? I was interested to join your guitargate level one. It says free for everyone. But when I try to get to it, I come to ”Pay 299 $”. I would love to learn guitar playing but I’m not sure that that my small hands and stiff fingers will allow me. So paying a lot of money without knowing, is not an option. So, is it free? How can I get there?
This is sooo not the song I would ask Michael to watch first. At least not this version. I understand the impromptu nature and the benefit of getting a real reaction - but this is so not the level that these guys general provide.
au contraire... THIS is the exactly way to go if you really want to know a musician's musical level, not the embellishment and tricks you can get on a full setup when playing stadiums let alone on a CD track. this way you are able to appreciate all the nuances and the skill needed to adapt on the fly such an "electrical" piece
The original music video for this song is still one I can’t get through without experiencing sadness all over again.

The guy in red wrote this song for his grandfather and his best friend. It is an intentional love song for loss.
Holy crap, Michael!! You added a new dimension for me brother! Thank you.

nice!!! I love this band so much, you'd be hard pressed to find a bad song from them. I'd absolutely be here for more Avenged reactions
I've seen Avenged Sevenfold 14 times, always a great show.
Guy in the red is Synister Gates. His dad was a jazz guitarist ^-^

His name is Sinister Gates and is jazz trained and the other guitarists Zackey are the K.K. DOWING AND Glenn Tipton from Priest

The solo on the original one is also slow and melodic. Give it a listen too, it's great! Love your work ❤️

Bravo ! Good explanation !

Michael would love you to react to Frampton & Urban performing together at the Rock Hall induction 👌 Frampton is still so so good

You should watch more avenged sevenfold songs
You should listen to black crow by Brent Cobb. Fantastic bluesy country song.
Was "pedal note" the term you were looking for?
you gotta do more avenged
Happy to see Mike do Avenged, sad it's such a sleeper choice. Yes, So Far Away is a great song, but there are so many more impressive guitar things that could've been covered from other Avenged songs, here.
Just for fun try to figure out the nobody solo while watching it for the first time
The singer's voice was sounding pretty shot here. You can even hear it during the clean verses.
Never a good sign when a singer keeps holding their finger on their ear
About 20 years ago doctors told him he might not be able to speak, let alone sing ever again from several surgeries involving vocal cord nodules. The fact that he can still sing is pretty impressive.
@@mattgee4867 that's to hear their pitch mate.
Please more metal! Try doing Jason Richardson's new music with All That Remains!
Maybe you could try "Estas tonne - The song of the golden dragon" btw good work teacher.
0:50 I have a hard time believing that it was this kids idea to request this song 😆
It actually was hahaha. You can see it in the full performance video.
This solo was pretty close to the original actually.

Heyy can you please do Billy's string. the preacher and bear
react to hail to the king the same live!!!
I don't know who they are. They sound very 'grungey', and something tells me someone likes Chris Cornell. Not a bad thing of course
first

God they sound awful. They have some good stuff, but this is just bad
Actually prefer this to a lot of there stuff
