We lost all of our freezer contents, mostly a whole pig because our freezer died and we didn’t notice it for probably 24 hours. We have two upright large freezers. They are in our basement and I hadn’t gone down there in a couple of days. We now have Wi-Fi thermometers that link to our phones and will notify us if the temp starts to drop. I highly recommend. It’s piece of mind for me.

Probably a dog or cat carrier.
At worst you could just pop an empty tub in the back and a blanket over top so they cant fly out. And strap the tub in with seatbelts. Chickens are pretty hardy so even if stressed out during the car ride theyll be fine.

The other benefit to having the freezers in the basement is for energy conservation which will reduce the amount of times the compressor kicks on which will in turn extend the life of your freezers.

So true about keeping your freezers and different things in the basement. Here if you don't keep your freezer or extra refrigerators inside your home they are not covered under the warranty. The initial warranty and also I have a warranty through my gas company that covers everything in my house and it is voided if it is kept outside. The only way an item can be outside if it is in a controlled environment heated and air conditioned and then it's still under warranty. Maybe hang a cute sign by the spigot to remind you of the wrist band. You could also put a tag on the wrist band to remind you what it's for. I know sometimes I will be like, now what was I wearing this band for, labeling things helps you to remember each task.

When you get a generator, please, please consider a whole house generator! You’re having a new baby, your freezers etc will thank you! You can decide how big of one you want and what you want to run. We have 3000sf and ours runs everything except the washer/dryer. Ours runs on a 500gal propane tank however if natural gas is available you can have it hooked up to that. Ours will run for 14 days on our propane. We do have it checked and maintenance 4X a year for $50 each visit.

We had a whole house unit put in 2 years ago and it is nice. I am in the Cincinnati Ohio area so our summers are hot and winters are cold . We have had a lot of rain this summer and lost electricity a lot. The entire house comes back on immediately and the ac comes on 5 seconds later. The cost is really minimal. Outs runs on natural gas, but we can switch it over to propane if we need to. We did have a 500 gal propane tank put underground in the back yard. The propane and tank cost more than the generator.

for your deep freezers, you can get magnetic dry erase boards from amazon. and write what is in each one in wet erase marker, the amount you have (#), and the date added. That way you can see what you have at a glance, how old everything is, and how much of each thing you have.
OR you can get butcher paper and some heavy duty magnets, and put a big piece of paper on the top of the freezers. Cross things off as you use them up and then replace it gets filled up instead of erasing them.

My suggestion for better organization in those deep freezers is to use same colored bags for same kind of meat. One color for chicken pieces, one color for pork etc. Also, would be good idea to have everything printed and attached to freezer. In this case if you take something out your just cross it, and if you put anything in you just add it. Also, dates when it's done. This will help you know how rotation is doing and help to maximize your inventory. Abd please don't pull or push stuff that is heavy, being pregnant please avoid giving to much unnecessary pressure on your tummy and back.

The freezers look good there. Personally I’d have just run an extension cord and put them where I wanted, lol, I’m stubborn. Your little basement grocery store is coming along nicely! You’re going to love being able to walk in from the garden with produce and be able to process and store it all right there. I live in Canada and I have a Generac generator and believe me , it has saved us many times. We were 6 days without power just last month after a storm and I would not do without. Our winters can be very cold and we do not to risk no power with little babies in the house. Also anyone on a well gets no water and no sump pump. They are worth the price tag.

You are so lucky yours works. We put one in a few years ago, quit after two years and couldn't find anyone to work on it. Had a blizzard in April and lost power for 12 days. We have a Cummins on order now to replace it. Many in our area have had their Generac up and quit on them. Was such an upset knowing it was hooked up and suppose to work and didn't...😩 I am wishing you the best as I don't want others going through it, just disappointing knowing the large investment you put in to it.

@@danimoen2456 I have had mine for 10 years and is a 20 kilowatt. No problems whatsoever. I am not qualified to comment on why yours did not work but perhaps the company who installed it did not do it correctly or that the generator was not powerful enough for the necessary demands of the house. Now they no longer sell the 20 kilowatt but have replaced with a 22 kilowatt. There is also a 24 kilowatt: it depends on your needs. However I would recommend getting something to help you out when the power goes out. Thanks for your input.

Don't forget your support system when you inbox, or unpack things too. It can be as simple as someone to just open up boxes then flatten and stack boxes after you've emptied them. Depending upon the person(s) and furniture it can be someone to go from room to room simply re-assmbling furniture from putting in nuts and bolts to simply putting shelves back into units or removing and stacking any protective coverings; for you, this may have already been done by the movers. Opening boxes, removing and stacking contents in the appropriate room, then flattening and stacking the boxes can be a great help. This also quickly points out boxes that ended up in the wrong room; with or without direction, get your helpers to out boxes in the correct room. And, it points out boxes with a mixed or assortment of items belonging to multiple rooms. Depending, your helpers may even stack and nest things then out them on shelves or in cupboards, out of boxes, off a stack, and/ ormoff the floor. - This may seem inconsequential but it can be a BIG help whether it be a half hour favor and chat time or a multi-hour let's get it all (haha) unpacked effort.

About your deep freezer from the 70s, you might want to reconsider replacing that. I have a deep freezer from 1961 and it’s super huge and it has outlived several freezers that I have got since then. It’s the coldest freezer I have ever owned and it is literally still in my basement and it is cold cold cold! If you do sell it I’d pay you top dollar for it! Sounds weird but seriously, you don’t see old freezers like that exactly around every corner.

    • @denisejones1863

Costco has good prices on freezers. Yes, need to new energy friendly one. They take a lot of power. We are in our new house for one year and now can average our electric bill, it is 60.00 year round here in NC with air conditioning running from June to Oct. non stop set at 78.

    • @MaryDavidson911
      @MaryDavidson911 2 года назад

@@denisejones1863 I can appreciate the thought of energy friendly ones but it only saves $30-$40 per year, on average, and for one the size of hers it would cost hundreds of dollars to replace it. Then you’re also left with the idea that these newer freezers do not last nearly as long. Overall I think it would still be a financial loss to replace it and that doesn’t even include the value of food loss the day it does finally decide to quit working. The newer ones just are not made the way the old ones were. And definitely not nearly as cold. But to each their own.

I love the bag idea for the freezer and will be using this idea in the near future. As well as I am now trying to come up with freezer meals after seeing the busy life of moving and how grateful that you are to have them so handy. I am very busy and I don't like to cook when it's dinner time. I would rather cook early in the morning. Well, now I'm leaning towards, just freeze a bunch of meals and pop it in the oven...how convenient is that. I have already started working on this and have several stuffed bell peppers individually packaged so that we can just grab a couple, defrost them, and pop them in the oven. I also took some burgers that I had, added a bag with a couple of buns (i freeze my bread) and packaged those together along with a small batch of fries. Now, I don't have to look for the buns or the fires, they are all together. Thanks for all the great tips. My problem is that I am taking care of two households and convenience is what I need. Making the food ahead of time, now that's going to be the way to go I think. Love watching your channel!

I had to laugh when you said you can’t move a freezer unless it’s empty because it’s too heavy. We were moving from on apartment to a new apartment and had an upright freezer (full including a 22 lb turkey). My in-laws decided to just strap it shut (full) and move it. The old apartment was on the ground floor the new apartment was 3 flights of stairs up. When they finally got the freezer upstairs my father-in-law said next time you move he will pay for movers. I had told them to empty it but the men of course said it wasn’t necessary 😂😂😂😂
Another note, every time we moved, I was pregnant or had just had a baby so wasn’t allowed to do much to help. I remember the last move (to the house we live in now) I was 7 months pregnant but looked like I could give birth any minute. Every time I started to do something, at least one of the movers(we hired someone to move us this time) would say “lady go sit down. They were so afraid I would go into labor while they were there. 😂😂😂
