Hi Becky. I just discovered your channel and I'm obsessed now I was a childbirth/parenting educator for 18+ years. I was also a birth doula. A great doula can be so comforting, educational and supportive.Make sure you read reviews on her, so you can see how she does during a pregnancy/birth and postpartum. A good doula during labor kinda of blends into the wall. Meaning you and Josh will be able to focus on each other. She will step in when she when she notices that things need some assistance...like maybe you need a change in position to help progress labor or help with p 😊ain, Josh needs food ,water or a rest. Also you will discuss with her how you would like labor and delivery to go and if the nhs arise what you and Josh would like to handle. She will be able to step in for you during those times and help your goals to be attained. She will be flexible and help you understand procedures or medications that you may not have anticipated. She will also be a tremendous help postpartum...helping you with issues that arise with you. Breastfeeding help and answer the multiple questions you will have with a newborn at home. I hope this helps even just a little. Most of all remember this is your birth, no one else's. You will get a lot of unsolicited advice. But you do you. Whatever you decide medication/ no medication, breastfeeding/not breastfeeding, any of the many decisions you will make. You are a smart woman and seem like you have a wonderful relationship with your husband. You guys will make the perfect decisions for your family ❤️ sorry I was so long winded...you can tell it's a passion of mine 😊 I wish the best for both of you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    PACKING SUGGESTIONS:
    1. Leave the clothes in the drawers , remove the drawers and move the the dressers then to the new house and return drawers to there places.
    2. Remove items from 1 room and take to the new home. Complete 1 room at a time.

Mamma of 6 littles here, you’ll be so happy you hired a doula! Like you said you and Josh can just concentrate on having a baby and your doula can advocate for things that you need. you can have your preferences mapped out ahead of time. keep an open mind things can change, but those are all things that your Doula can help you prep for. Congratulations, so very happy for you!

Top loading washer for-ev-er!! One of my favorite infant laundry tips is to use mesh laundry bags for the baby socks…I used 2 so I had a clean bag and a dirty bag. Once it’s laundry time, zip up the bag & it can go through the washer and dryer. No lost baby socks! I’m at a loss for big kid socks though…WHERE DO THE SOCKS GO?!?! I just keep buying more 🤷🏻‍♀️

Would highly recommend the doula idea! Especially for your first time. I had a doula for each of my kids but the first time was absolutely necessary. I was in active labor for over 34 hours and crazily enough, my doula made it possible my husband to be able to take a quick nap. Also, our doula was not only able to advocate for us before and during the birth but also afterward when the hospital wanted to supplement with formula instead of the colostrum I had pumped. She had a lactation plan at the ready when a nurse called the social worker in and was able to explain things in a way I wasn’t able to with the pain killers I was on. I really can’t praise our doula enough!

Yes yes YES! A doula is a GREAT idea!
I wish I had a doula for my first 2 births. I had a wonderful doula with my 3rd, my doula was very supportive and helpful talking through every step with what we wanted our birth experience to be like! She was one I talked to more often than my midwife actually because she was nearly just as knowledgeable with birth as my midwife.
Funny thing, she actually caught my baby since she showed up first, I was further along in labor than we all thought and my midwife didn't show up in time 🙈😆
I will ALWAYS reccomend a midwife and doula for a great birth experience! It's about the well being of you, your husband and your baby! 🤗

    • @asimplekindofchaos
      @asimplekindofchaos 2 года назад +2

@@ambernewville4268 Oh my goodness Amber! That’s crazy but awesome! The only reason my husband didn’t have to catch our second baby was because he called our doula to verify the placement of the tens machine and she heard me in the background. After a 34 hour labor the first time around, I didn’t even wake my husband up until 2 hours in and only then to help with the tens machine and, in my mind, just go back to sleep. Well, I ended up with a precipitous labor for #2 and when our doula heard me, she told my husband to call the midwife right away. He called her and as soon as she got there our daughter was born. Lol I don’t know that my husband would have been okay with trying for another home birth if he would have had to catch a baby. 😂

Having moved with the military multiple times, I learned a few things. Label your boxes with the destination room and a few of the key items in the box...because you will forget (even without prego brain). Use your towels and linens to wrap fragile things. Good luck! It's so stressful and you are handling everything with such grace and humor.

  • @carrieharris2337
    @carrieharris2337 2 года назад +48

Packing Tips: I tape the bottom of the box at the seam as you did then put 2 more pieces - one on each side and overlap them on the original strip. I have done multiple cross country moves and NEVER had a box come undone no matter how much weight is in the boxes. Also, pack each box until it’s completely full - you can fill gaps with spare towels, bedding etc. When the boxes get stacked they crush in if they are not full and that is when stuff gets broken. Also, pack a “Box 1”, “Box 2” etc for moving day (I recommend keeping them with you or put on truck last on/first off. Inside should contain day one necessities like kitchen must haves (enough to make a meal or 2 before kitchen is completely unpacked) - dishes, napkins silverware, favorite pot/pan to cook in, etc. Also need to include things like bedding for master bedroom (I recommend setting up bed and making it as soon as it arrives (because at the end of moving day nobody has the energy to hunt for sheets and make up the bed), toilet paper for each bathroom, towels for showering etc. All the things you might need the first couple days and don’t want to take the time to hunt through tons of boxes looking for stuff before you can cook, shower or go to bed! 🤣 Also, pack a suitcase (like you’re going on vacation) so you have the first couple days clothes and bathroom items so they are easy to locate and not have to go commando because you don’t have the energy to unpack all the bedroom boxes to find underwear or a toothbrush!🤣 Good luck!
One last tip: when packing mark your boxes for the room they’ll be going in in the new house NOT the room they are in in the “old house”. It’ll save having to lug boxes from room to room at the new house when unpacking and makes unpacking much quicker.

We have successfully completed several international moves and a return to our original home which we rented to expats when we were in Asia. Your suggestions are spot on! We did the same AND had a first aid box and a kitchen essentials box. At least Becky and Josh are moving kitchen, food pantry,… items on each trip. Items we unpacked first were bathroom needs: toilet paper, hand soap, towels for drying towels. Drinking needs were second. Bed making was third followed by shower/ tub needs. Paper towels were placed in many rooms with a garbage bag.

    • @Romans828girl

Good ideas. The only thing I would add is, Use the cloth things you will be moving to wrap the glass things in. Extra towels & sheets around the barware, etc. This means less boxes overall, and you don't have to buy or dispose of as much paper wrapping.

  • @vbo9872

Something to consider: if you have a set of sheets that you're going to donate - keep the flat sheet, and donate or toss the other pieces. Over the years having a stack of flat sheets to use as drop cloths, or floor protectors, or to use to protect things when moving, etc - comes in really handy.

For your first child especially, putting in the time to find a doula you really mesh well with will make everything easier in terms of having a peaceful labor and birth! They'll also be able to teach you well needed coping strategies after baby is here while you're postpartum with a newborn baby, which is usually even more important than labor and delivery but is sorely underdiscussed in the United States especially.

We had a doula with our first and it was a great experience. Not only will she be a great advocate for you in a hospital setting, but she can help your husband know how to help you. That was one of the biggest reasons we hired a doula since it was our first baby and my husband had no experience (absolutely NONE!) with pregnancy, birth or babies. Choose a doula that you and Josh both feel comfortable with. Ours was also a massage therapist which was awesome! She even came to our house 2 weeks postpartum so both me and my husband could have massages.

I did the opposite - not knowing any better. My first delivery was terrible and I had pretty serious post partum. I fired my doctor. I really wanted nothing to do with the hospital the second time, but my husband was terrified something would go wrong. I got a new doctor plus a doula for the second one. It was such a better experience. I did better, baby did better, and nothing traumatic happened. I knew someone was on my side and would advocate for me. I also discussed my previous experience in depth before going ahead with the new doctor, so I knew we were on the same page.

In my efforts to simplify, I decided to keep only 2 sets of sheets. Cotton for summer and flannel for winter. On wash day, the bed gets stripped, washed and remade. So easy. I've done this for many years. Then I keep 1 set for each guest bed, in case we have multiple guests. Same thinking for the number of towels. I donate gently worn towels to an animal shelter.

Becky, this is my advice to you as a nurse but also as a sensible practical person. Your baby's birth is going to be one of the most precious moments of your and Josh's lives. You will have family members or friends who have gone through pregnancies and births. In many ways they will be able to advise and help you when it comes to your choices through their own experiences. Listen to them and follow your instincts. It is so important for you to find the professionals that you can relate to and feel comfortable with so that you and Josh feel secure in your decisions. Although you will need to make the decisions soon, don't rush them. A baby's birth is precious but so are you as parents. Best wishes

I would not necessarily listen to them if they have had bad birth experiences. Things like that can cause fear in a FTM. Their births will not be your birth Becky, just keep that in mind as well. My mom traumatized me with her “horrific” birth stories. Thankfully those were not my birth stories. Mine ended up being amazing.

I understand feeling overwhelmed by the messes of everyday life. Last night we hit our breaking point with dishes as we don’t have a dishwasher. My husband did a big load of dishes, and then I did a load. Then today he did another load, and we’re nearly caught up. It’s so hard when my mental and physical health stuff hits and the burden of cleaning falls on my husband. I try to remind myself to do little things everyday: scrub the inside of the toilet, sweep a room (90% wood floors), wipe down the oven top, etc. Having grace can be such a challenge, but we got this. Hugs to you Becky, and anyone else who needed this reminder.

A Doula is the way to go!!! I used a doula for my first child who was born in March, and it was amazing. She was able to give us so much help in preparing, since she met with us twice before the baby was born. She helped us know when to head to the hospital, and also made me feel so much more secure in the hospital, since I knew she would help me know what every procedure was as well as help me manage my pain. She also checked in on us about a week after the birth to make sure that I was recovering well. Doulas are amazing!

Just remember when looking for a doula what their role…they are a labor support person and not a medical professional. That being said, I do recommend a doula to a mama who doesn’t not have a partner or feels their partner would need assistance. Josh sure seems like a strong partner😁. If they aren't complete sets but you want to keep them, you can always put fitted in a stack and flats in a stack so you can see at a glance which you need. Same with pillow cases and liners that aren't folded in a complete set. 😁 I hope that made sense LOL.

Hey Becky! I am 14 weeks pregnant with my husband and I’s first. I wanted to share some resources I’ve found to be helpful so far in case that helps you and Josh too!
    - The Birth Hour podcast- I know you love listening to your podcasts, as do I. This is a platform to hear birth and post parting stories along with resources shared at the end of each episode. It’s definitely taught me that there’s no planning how your birth may go, but there are many intrinsic tools you can use (such as knowing how to advocate for yourself, which your doula can be a phenomenal asset for that)! Personally, I am planning for a home birth as long as baby and pregnancy continue to do well.
    - Big Fat Positive podcast - this is another good one that has a more comedic, light hearted spin. I’ve learned of a lot of helpful mom items/hacks that I’m keeping in mind for when I will need those items.
    - Real Food for Pregnancy book by Lily Nichols: I read this cover to cover a few years back when my husband and I started trying (when encountered fertility issues along the way, but the silver lining is I’ve been able to learn a lot of good stuff over the years). The book guides us through pre and post natal nutrition and also contains recipes for helpful guidance.
I am so happy for you and Josh! Thank you for taking us along with you. And most of all, thank you for being you!
    Best,
    Lydia (sweetkingsgarden)

I am pregnant with my 7th and have learned to have a voice when it comes to questioning the doctor/ nurses I come in contact with. Having someone there to support what you have decided or walk you through the unknown would be amazing.
Even with my 6th the doctor tried to send me home when I was in labor. I forced them to check me a second time before the hour they like to wait. Went from 4 to 9 cm and then they panicked. I got an epidural and they told me to go to sleep even though I was fully dilated because they wanted to see if my water would break on it’s own... It didn’t and I asked them to break it after they came back to check on me
