Just an FYI I am no longer the Avalon rose crochet! I changed my instagram and etsy handles a while back and have updated the new links in my description! 🖤
ive been crocheting since september last year, i must say i dont know why everyone recommends granny square projects for beginners!! ii made a granny square tote bag as my first project, sewing everything together felt like the end of the world. i wish i wouldve started with a simple amigurumi! another tip: i 100% recommend starting with a LIGHT colored yarn color, using dark colored yarns makes it so much harder to see your stitches as a beginner. if you dont know what hook size to get, look at the back of your yarn. it says what hook size you need for the yarn! a lot of people like sizing down 1 or 2 hook sizes when making amigurumi, but it definitely isnt necessary. i would also like to recommend getting a hook with the rubber handles. again, definitely not necessary but as someone with clammy hands i wish i wouldve known they existed when i first started!
yup...when the first thing you learn to crochet is a granny square then you have been tossed into the deep end..that is what my grandma taught my sister and I to do...and I honestly still have that square to this day, nearly 52 years later..I had to teach myself, through books/magazines how to do the rest..I now teach beginners and start them with chains and SC's/DC's..if they pick that up quickly then HDC's...I don't want my students to be overwhelmed in the beginning..
Newbie here, I've done knitting before and crochet is just a little more my speed. I started 6 weeks ago and finished two large scarfs. I also struggle with severe ADHD and crochet has helped curb my anxiety and hyperactivity. It's a great tactile stim. My tip for other neurospicy newbies: Audiobooks are such a great way to block out the world and get fully into your project and you get to listen to a story while you're doing your craft. I've listened through 5 books in 6 weeks and it has helped me stay consistent while practicing every day.
I completely agree with using a light colored yarn (in an earlier comment). Dark colored yarns need a lot of light to see your stitches. I would also recommend solid colors to begin, just so seeing stitches is easier. Another tip I like to offer beginners is to use a smooth yarn, vs. a fuzzy yarn. You will likely be pulling out stitches... smooth yarn will make this easier! Fuzzy yarn likes to velcro to itself and can lead to breaking the yarn as you frog stitches. Finally, remember you are learning a new skill! Be patient with yourself!! Practice, practice, practice... watch videos, try things, frog things... save some of your first efforts, tho, so you can see how much you improve over time. Good luck and have fun! 😊
Honestly my opinion for someone who is a beginner is something simple like a crochet ear warmer or yes granny squares but not as your thinking with the magic circle there's single stitch that are easy
What a useful video! It takes me back! I definitely wish I had taken stitch markers and stitch counting more seriously in the beginning. So many of my early projects were uneven or too tall and skinny because I wasn't making sure I had the right stitch count. I also wish I had learned sooner how to neatly sew on legs, etc. to amigurumi. I still have to slow down and be more careful about that!
I'm so new & a little scared, hoping I catch on. I was happy to see your video & I'm using it to shop & only buy what I need. Your video is right in time.
@alwaysagigi I'm so happy my video helped you! Being scared is a natural emotion when you start something new, don't give up, and remember everyone crochets a little differently 🖤
Shout out to my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Jetty who said “practice makes permanent!” As you said, nobody is perfect, but practice and you’ll permanently have that skill 🤗
My crochet journey is almost identical to yours! I re-learned crochet after 40 years. I re-learned the same way that you did. Now, in my early 70's I make and sell amigurumi.❤
I’ve returned to crochet after a few years away. I’m still intermediate. But I’m teaching myself Irish crochet. I have trouble understanding written instructions, and much prefer charts with the symbols. Sometimes I make a chart as I go along, if I’m really ambitious.
You are so right about the sewing. I do sew also but never equated that to crochet. Wow. Saves a lot of time and makes crochet projects turn out beautifully.
This is a very pleasant informing video. That last bit about yarn stash is very true, lol! I have been crocheting quite awhile n you might want to mention or make a video about the eruopean terminology n american terminology. When i first got started i ran into trouble as alot of what i liked was not american. There is a way to tell the difference but i cant explain it well at all. Would you? And the old late 1800's n early 1900's patterns are a nitemare!! Those ladies back then are like our grandma's secret recipes for cooking! 😂
Ooh I love those colorful plastic clip stitch markers! So much better than using yarn or bobby pins. I also started with the granny square...everything else I had to learn on my own. I think I'm pretty far along in skill level. Which is exciting. Especially since I had a pretty rough start at crochet. Granny squares are great but not when that's all you get taught. There is soooo much more to crochet than the granny lol.
I wish I had started on thread first. It was hard for me to transition to thread when I made a dresser scarf. It would have bern easier to go up to yarn.
Excellent introduction to crochet! I have been crocheting for years and think you touched on all of the most important things to consider before getting started. You are concise and very easy to listen to. I just subscribed and look forward to your future tutorials! 👍
I have been working on amigurumi dolls for a year, and sometimes, the pattern is not written right, and I have to guess, having to stop and analyze what the problem is at the end everything comes out. I love a challenge, and I have a lot of patience 😅😅😅
There's been so many times where I have to add an extra increase or decrease just to make the # of stitches per row match what it says on the pattern 😅 thankfully you can barely notice the mess ups when its all done.

I love your advice . I'm now retired and board stiff. I haven't picked up a hook in 30years. Here I go.❤❤😂

Absolutely agree, fuzzy yarn looks great but it so difficult for an absolute beginner to work with. :)
Here i go hun. Ordering supplies now. Ha ha its nov 2024. Need episode 2 now.😂❤
I’m such a beginner that my yarn and hooks are still sitting on the table next to me while I watch some RUclips tutorials.
You gotta start somewhere! 😊❤️
