    Unless they crochet, most people don't know how much yardage/skeins it takes to make throw, baby blanket, etc. Even new crocheters don't buy enough yarn to make the project. Once you've shorted yourself a few times because you feel it shouldn't take THAT many skeins....you learn you need a lot.

    You had so many good points. A while back I said something to my husband about not understanding why the kids spend so much money on things in games that aren't real. He said something that really opened my eyes. He said to look at it like this... You spend your extra money on yarn, needles, hooks, etc. That is your entertainment. You get joy out of buying yarn and making things with it. They get joy from playing these games. I no longer look at the kid's games and small in game purchases as wasteful.
    Some people enjoy having their hair and nails done professionally every few weeks. Some people enjoy buying a coffee or two every day. Some people have memberships.
    I've only had my nails done once in my lifetime (it was a gift from someone else). I only get my hair cut a few times a year. I choose to spend my extra money on yarn and yarn related things.
    As long as it doesn't cause a person financial strain, buy the yarn, or manicure, or whatever brings you joy.

    Agreed! As an avid gardener, crocheter, and quilter, I've had family & friends make 'negative' comments on the number of plants, yarns, and fabrics I have for my beloved hobbies. I have FINALLY learned to say, "Yep. It's my passion.' I'll sometimes add..."This keeps me busy and focused on doing something nice." 🙂 What's funny to me is most of the folks are those who would spend $500 on a purse or something along those lines... LOL I think THEY are silly, but I have better manners than to say it!

    A big yarn stash will come in handy someday. I had a well paying corporate job and a knitting and crocheting hobby. I bought scads of yarn at the time. I quit that job after Covid and now I have to be very careful with my purchases. However, I have bins of beautiful yarns in sweater quantities in my favorite colors. I have my own yarn shop in the stash closet.

      I think there's this sexist sense that men's hobbies are valuable, and their tools are 'real,' while women's hobbies are low value 'crafts' and we're silly creatures who spend too much money on our silly things. There's not much you cn do about that, except decide to not collaborate in your own shaming. Right? You're doing a beautiful thing and your things are beautiful.

    I am a new subscriber. I saw your video on how to close the top of a hat without the big bunch at top and love that idea. You’re speaking a lot of good sense about yarn and enjoying what you do. I have a yarn stash that fills a tall cabinet, drawers in a dresser, the tops of two closets, and is under my bed. I recently organized it using dollar tree clear plastic zipper storage bags. I used to feel embarrassed, but not anymore. I crochet everyday, it calms me because I have anxiety, and after collecting it all on sale over a few years, pre inflation years!, I saved so much money. It’s cheaper than talking to a therapist!! LOL😊. I now crochet from my stash. I don’t go out to eat, I don’t travel, and I have a 2006 car that is still great! I look forward to your videos. Happy crocheting❣️🤗🧶

You are also right about using good yarn for yourself. This is a mistake I will never make again. I don't know if it's unpopular, but I'm pretty much over the knitting snob thing, where crocheters are some kind of lower life-form. I don't crochet because I'm too stupid or lazy to learn to knit. I crochet because I'm honoring my grandmother. And because I'm still not board with it. Couldn't we all just respect what we do, regardless of how many needles/hooks we use? I admit, I don't see it much on RUclips, but I feel it in too many yarn stores.

    Yes, don't be ashamed of your stash! I go through phases of being into a craft for a while then moving on to a different one. I don't tend to get rid of the tools or materials as I know I will go back to it eventually. So I could open my own craft shop! People may judge why I have so much stuff but forget I have collected it over decades and I don't smoke or drink or go to cinemas etc like perhaps they do.

    0:20 I will say that there are times that it is acceptable to shame people for their stash.
    Such as:
    1) The stash is causing them to be financially destitute / dishonest.
    2) The stash is posing major health problems such as infestation, pet waste getting on it and not being thrown out, is moldy, or is preventing them from safe mobility.
    3) The stash poses a very real fire hazard. This is especially true with synthetic fibers as they catch and melt very quickly as opposed to flash burns from cotton and other plant-based fibers. If there is an earthquake and the shelving unit falls over it can crush a person to death regardless of size and age. The yarn knocked out of the shelf also poses very real tripping hazards If the creator needs to get out of the house immediately. Yarn also holds on to water very well which means that in the event of a flood there's a high likelihood of drowning due to being trapped from waterlogged yarn.
    Those are the three criteria that I see as being acceptable for addressing/shaming a person's stash.

The only time I really consider what someone else would like is when I'm making something for them. My craft room is a mess most of the time but I can find what I need! 😂 Thanks for chatting with us! Have a great weekend!

    I agree with you. People shouldn’t judge someone’s yarn stash. I know that I have a growing stash that I need to seriously declutter.
    I don’t buy yarn with people in mind anymore. If they want something, I’ll use what’s in my stash 😆 only once did I buy the yarn because the project called for it.

You are smart for realizing that and listening and doing what’s right for you and your family! And hey, you tested it so now you know and you aren’t second guessing yourself. I’ll be there if you decide to create videos in the future, but for now, I’m thrilled to chat with you in the comments! ❤️❤️❤️

    Getting yarn from family as gifts is generally a win for me. Like "yay, free yarn", right? Well the few times I have gotten it from CERTAIN family members, it has been SO cheap and scratchy. Or just tacky looking. Once I got a HUGE ball of Super Bulky and the multitude of colour in it was SO NOT my style. Another time I got some skeins that were sparkly (I think they were from the dollar store) "in case I wanted to make Christmas decorations". I totally appreciated the thought at the time but after working with it for the duration of about 6 rounds I realized how terrible it felt on my skin and quickly frogged the project. I don't know if they simply had no idea or they half-assed the attempt at the gift. Kind of felt like like the latter based on some of the accompanying comments to possibly justify such a simple gift.

    Unpopular opinion
    A pricetag doesnt make a better yarn. The expensive hand dyed llama wool isnt going to make a better sweater for your best friends baby than the 4 dollar skeins of big twist. You dont have to go broke making a blanket cause the ladies in the knitting club stick their noses up at your pound of love.
    A lovey bunny is just as special made in worsted weight acrylic as it is in that sweet 20 dollar an ounce cotton bunny wool blend.
    And dont underestimate the glory of being machine washable.

    • @ShannonTalksYarn
      @ShannonTalksYarn  Год назад +2

      Ooohhh that’s a good one!! Yes, machine washability is extremely important to me!!! I agree and to add, if I had $200 of yarn in a sweater, I’d be afraid to wear it! I definitely won’t go broke to continue crocheting 😃

    I honestly haven't felt the competition. It does seem like there are some who are into showing off the amount they can crochet in a week but I'm more interested in enjoying it. If I rush, I make mistakes.
    Hope you grow as well!! (And thanks for reassuring my stash insistence). One other tiny, tiny thing (not you) is I'd love more yarn-tubers look into the lens instead of talking to the viewfinder. Obviously I'll still watch them but if I'm sitting on the opposite side of the couch from where they're looking it's a bit jarring.

    • @ShannonTalksYarn
      @ShannonTalksYarn  3 месяца назад +2

      I struggled with looking in the right place when I was using the selfie camera on my phone, it wasn't until after I switched to the other side that I could focus on the lens. I don't know how it is for you on your channel but in my analytics, it says about 30% of my views are on TV where it's super noticeable compared to on a phone.

    Honestly two videos a week is a lot. All the editing, filming, prepping before, actually making the projects... I'm an old school sewing and crochet blogger and posting twice a month is more enough for me. My maybe unpopular opinion, don't make something random (or mass production potholder...) just to get the yarn out of your stash.
    Towards Stash, love going through my friends stash and AHH and ohhh over their yarn.

    • @ShannonTalksYarn
      @ShannonTalksYarn  Год назад +2

      I agree, 2 is a lot! There would be no way I could do a decent job if I was just doing tutorials. Thats just way too much production! I also agree that there’s no reason to make things just to use the yarn up! I love looking at other yarn stashes too! It’s like getting to know someone better lol! Thank you so much for watching and commenting I really appreciate it ❤️

    What a fun cover photo. I love seeing into others stash. I do need to remember to use my nicer yarns. I’m taking next month to make myself a knitted lap blanket. Right now I’m working out of my color house but that is because a friend asked so we found the pattern then chose her colors as you said that works best. I have some brown yarn, that is just not me, that should just be weeded out even if it’s in a sweaters quantity.

    Regarding your stash, I w am a quilter and have a fabric stash, you inevitably don't use all of your fabric on projects. I imagine leatherworkers have a stash of leather, woodworkers have their stash of wood. It's the nature of hobbies and no ones concern but your own.

    • @ShannonTalksYarn

    I love hot takes!!!
    No Stash Shame!!!
    I can keep most of the house together... My craft room...OMG!!! Nope! Total disaster!!!
    I agree with the good yarn, but also a lot of times when you gift it to someone who gets it... they will be afraid to use it because they also see it is as precious.
    I will buy things I don't love when I am buying donation yarn project supplies, but I won't just stash a lot of yarns for friends and family anymore. I have so much yarn in my mom's colors...
    100% on the competition thing!!!
    I really need to work on my back end stuff!! It is hard to keep up when you have life come up... Burnout is also a problem when you have a passion and you turn it into work like if you do shows, content and blogging...

    I don't think that the only reason to be mindful of your consumption is just financial limitations. I think people investing in their hobbies is wonderful, and I think having yarn options and pattern options, etc, is important for a lot of people, but I do think that mindful consumption is important. I am a yarny person with my own yarn stash and I also prioritize this in my budget, but I am still mindful about how much yarn I am purchasing because of the long term environmental impacts of overconsumption of goods (not just yarn), among other things.
