Are You Saving Money Buying Cheap Yarn & Crochet Tools?
I just give local ❤
I made a scarf with this yarn, and I love it! It's gorgeous. I can't wait to buy more for another project. 😊
I love it so much! I bet your scarf is beautiful!
I just purchased few skeins myself not to put away. To finish my projects.😊
I had a professor who would shred our projects. At first, I was heartbroken because I spent so long on it and it felt GREAT to see the final outcome. The more he did it, the more I knew it was going to happen so it became more about the process than the final outcome. It helped me attach during the making and detach at the end. Was it the best way to teach that lesson? Absolutely not. 😂 It’s something that I held onto as a commission artist though. Once I signed the piece, I let go of the outcome.
I was recently thinking about how I really miss old Christmases with my parents. It’s hard losing your parents… holidays just aren’t the same anymore. But getting cozied up on the couch with a blanket and crochet project with the Christmas lights on helps to get me through 😊
I’ll be putting my tree up this weekend and doing a little decorating. I’ve also been trying to find more “vintage” decorations from my childhood to add to the vibe.
Awesome! I put my tree up last weekend. That is a good idea to decorate with vintage decor! 🙂
Hi Shannon! Great video! ♥️ I might make something small for one or two people this year, but other than that I don’t have plans to make everyone Christmas gifts. I’ve been learning to not keep overwhelming and stressing myself out…that means not taking on as much…my body literally can’t take that anymore lol 😊
Oh my gosh, I and 100% right there with you!!! I can’t take the added stress either!
I just hate how DARK it is at this time of year. I live in the North East of England and daylight hours are very short, even on a clear day. When it's cloudy it feels like it's dark all day. To combat this, I make a blanket with the boldest, brightest colours I can find. This year, I've chosen Hooked by Robin's Festival Blanket. It really helps keep my spirits up.
That is a fantastic idea! I use a lot of earth tones so maybe I should get out a few of my bolder color choices! Great tip!
Thank you for the subject... I have been thinking of that lately, since I just find I was too optimistic about a sock yarn brand that reacts badly to washing/wearing. It pills a lot and the garment looks old after only 2 washes, since the yarn is labeled as "superwash"... So, if I had to build my stash again, I would definitely give a good try to a yarn before getting a lot of it only because color and price are good for me. Lately, I discovered few other yarn brands that react way better than this one. I really like your videos, you have interesting topics. Thank you for sharing your crafting with us!
Thank you for your kindness! I appreciate it, and I appreciate you watching and commenting. I think you have a perfect example of how we can accidentally fill our yarn stash with yarns we don’t really want to use. I’m right there with you! And hey, at least we are learning! 😃
Thank you, I was going to opt out of the 'What a cozy evening of crochet looks like for me' video, until I watched the end. Just feeling a little discouraged with my channel lately. We're a few days into our first major storm of the season here too, (first atmospheric River to hit Cali) and maybe I'm feeling a little S.A.D. too, I don't know, Anyway, thanks for the encouragement to get editing, I think I have all the footage for it too. So, all I have to do is edit. Also, more livestreams sound fun, I'll try to catch your next one! 🎉🎉🧶🧶
Please don’t feel pressured at all!!! Something’s need to be the right time in order to make it happen and if you’re not feeling it, that’s totally ok. And I go through periods where I feel like my channel is doing great and then other times I feel stagnant. I think it’s a normal part of the process! I don’t know if that helps at all….. I’m definitely not an expert but you can always DM me over on IG if there’s any YT questions you think I might be able to answer 🫶🏻
@ShannonTalksYarn Thanks Shannon I appreciate it.
Wonderful yarns you showed. I have an alpaca/merino blend that is incredible soft from a small Danish seller (not sure if they send outside Scandinavia) called Garnspecialisten. The brown I have is called coffee and it's dark like a dark cup of coffee too. They are all about recycling yarns and sometimes it can be hard to get the colour I want but I can wait until they have them in stock again.
I just love those rich deep dark colors too! ☕️
Embracing the cozy things helps, and for me that is yarn and crochet. And yes I do enjoy wearing my compression gloves without my hands sweating😂
So very true!
Keeping active can help SAD. So say, if you have to go and shovel the walkways or driveways *yet again*, there way be that feeling of accomplishing something. Then as a reward, you can go Bonus if you can look forward to test driving your cosy knit/crochet garments. While I'm cleaning off the car, I get to see how well my mittens work and appreciate that I made the cuffs of my sweater longer, as well as the ribbing on the body longer. No cold breezes! Then I can go back inside more confident that I know I need to add more length to sweater patterns. I want to try a wool-cotton blend as a layering sweater for indoors during the winter. I have also tested mittens and fingerless mitts out when walking the dog. My focus is on meeting the dog's needs yes, but I can enjoy how warm my socks are, and evaluate what would make better dog walking mitts. All of this as opposed to thinking "I hate being out in the freezing slippery slush, I wish the ploughs would come by but they won't because there is not enough snow!" Of course, sometimes being outside in the elements sucks, and I think that it is ok to recognize that feeling as natural. It is a balance.
That’s an excellent point! You’ve got such a great perspective! ❤️
Oohhhhh I'll really look forward to that!! ❤
When I was a kid I did do crochet gifts a couple years. One year I did pineapple doilies. Another year I did crocheted snowflake ornaments and nylon dish scrubbies. I never thought much about what the people would do with my gifts. I did it for pure enjoyment for myself. Before learning to crochet I gave cross stitched items to my grand parents only. My grand parents did display all the work I made. I’ve also picked only people I know would appreciate my work as an adult.
Its funny because I get seasonal depression, but its the exact opposite time if year from everyone else. It is so hot and humid in Florida in August that I dont even want to step outside. Just walking to your car makes you feel like you jumped in a hot tub because you're so sweaty and there is no escape. So summer tends to be my hunker down period and I usually get several large knitting and sewing projects done. No blankets though lol.
I have heard that before! And I can totally see how it’s the same. It’s just to extreme to be outside
@@ShannonTalksYarn Yep, that's exactly it. I lose all motivation to do things outside - and I don't even want to go in and out of stores it's so miserable.
You are wise beyond your years! My problem has always been trying to make a magaziny perfect holiday, and always feeling I didnt quite make it. My sister once said "expectation minus reality equals disappointment. How true!
Your sister sounds wise!!! Thanks for sharing!
I never feel pressured to go outside and do things 😂 there are so many fun things to do in the great indoors
There really is!!!
This happens to me every winter! Its because of the darkness. What helps is to craft: crochet and jewelrymaking. Looking thru my stash of pearls and enjoy the colors.
I’m so glad you recognize that and have found something to counter it! I’ve started making my stitch markers and have really enjoyed that so I can see how fun jewelry making is!
Hi! I'm trying to get through winter with the help of knitting, crochet and other creative hobbies such as painting and jewellery making ❤ what gets me the most is the darkness: Where I live the sun sets just before 3 p.m. today. And the day is going to get even shorter. Right now I'm knitting my friend a scarf; the name of the colour translates to something like "Sunny yellow" 🌞 I have already crocheted her a sunflower hair accessory and am planning to make her a sunflower bracelet 🌻 so I am adding sun to our lives through crafting 💛
Oh wow, that is sooo early! I would really struggle with that too. Here, it’s about 430 when it gets dark and that seems bad enough! I’m so glad you have activities planned out to help you get through it!
@@ShannonTalksYarn well, that's finland 🤷♀️ but I love the snow and the Christmas lights ❤️ we'll get through this winter, just like we always do ❤️
Oo. A fire sounds very lovely.
It really is!!!
Crochet is my saving grace year round. But I do have seasonal depression started a few years ago. Guess getting old kicked it in. But yeah crocheting helps my mind not wonder down the gloomy road of depression. Glad you put that out there.
Crochet is mine too, and definitely year round for me too!
Great topic! It’s not discussed enough. ❤
Thanks! Gotta support each other and know we aren’t alone!
It is so pleasing to crochet in the Fall and Winter-on a rainy and cold afternoon. We’re experiencing that now. Catching up on some WIPs and planning for next year. Thank you for this reminder. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too Vicki! Sounds like you have a great plan to wrap up this year. Enjoy the weekend my friend!
I would never make something that was intended to be gifted to someone I don't know. Never. I was utterly appalled when I saw a friend sitting down making 20 cross-stitched bookmarks for her sister to gift to other people, just because her sister asked her to. Hours and hours of work, which was being taken utterly for granted. That's a hard no for me. I am very fortunate in that my immediate family *do* appreciate how much hard work goes into crafting, because most of them are Makers too.
Ooof, that is a lot of energy for people you don’t know!!!
Winter is a good time to crochet. The yarn keeps you nice and warm as you work with it.😊❤
It really is! Probably the best part of winter!
When life disappoints you, sometimes you just have to lower your expectations.
Brrrr can’t imagine living up north. Here in south Louisiana we may have a day or two in the 30s then it will be 60-70 degrees again. I crochet a lot in the summer as it’s too hot to go out. Just crank up the air conditioner! Winter is my outdoor time. But short days leave plenty of crocheting time. So really I crochet year round. Rarely a day goes by without crocheting on some project. It’s my “zen” time.
Sometimes I think I should move to the south!!! Crochet is definitely my zen activity too!
Words of wisdom comes out of your mouth!!! I feel the same after many years. Why do this to ourselves when a lotery ticket brings more joy than a good pair of handknitted socks? Well... This year, only my husband deserves it!
Yes it can! in conjunction with Vit D supplements.. of course, talk to your physician first... ;)
Absolutely, I totally agree!
Winter is the best time to crochet or work on crafts. There's something so comforting about sitting quietly on a winter evening and creating something with your yarn, thinking about it, planning it, working for the future. 🧡
Yeees!!! It just feels right!
Yarn helps me because of the colors. Plus how it feels and if you create something it makes you feel productive
Those are both really great reasons! ❤
@ thank you ☺️
wow it's amazing!!
As I'm on the other side of the planet from you, it's summer now, and your video is thus time appropriate for me here. Another reason for covering up, which is VERY relevant to me as an Aussie, is protection from the sun! Of course, lace isn't quite that protective, but making something which is less lacy would still work; say, adding sleeves to a sleeveless top and then just having the lacy part at the cuffs. Cotton is lovely for lace because you get great stitch definition. If one is worried about shrinkage, one could make a swatch with the yarn, measure it, put it through the wash/dry cycle, and check if it shrunk. For merging the crochet with the garment, I'd do what I do with towel-toppers; take the same yarn, or a matching-but-thinner yarn, and a tapestry needle, and either do blanket stitch or chain stitch on the edge. That gives you loops to start crocheting into.
Glad it could help and thanks for the tip too!! I hope you’re enjoying your summer, we just had our first dusting of snow the other day ❄️🥶❄️
@@ShannonTalksYarn In the middle of our first heatwave right now. (Summer is NOT my favourite season...)
Really enjoyed this video. I also love autumn colors so your makes are very inspiring! Thx
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing.. makes me feel like I’m ok because I have wips too and some I’m ready to give up on . We all make mistakes, right? 😀
Yep, sure are!
personally i wouldn’t mind so much if my handmade gifts get regifted. at least it. is likely to find a new home. it’s the stories of people throwing things in the trash or letting them rot that get me, like, what leads someone to be so disrespectful of another person’s time and effort like that?!
You’re so encouraging! Love your style! Just saw this today and my next video on Tuesday is about my 5 unpopular opinions! 😀🤣 Fortunately they are different than yours 😊 Thanks for your support!
Thank you so much! I’m looking forward to hearing yours!
Sense of touch to enjoy it. I cried.(seebelow)
My daughter just requested a blanket for the receptionist where she works. They do I.T. for blind people. This girl is also blind. My daughter asked her what color the blanket should be, she requested purple, because that was the only color she remembered and she could see it in her mind. She also asked that the blanket be very soft so she could use her sense of touh
touch. I broke down and cried.
Touch. I cried.
Ah, the joys of being "Slow Crochet". There's this Venn diagram for presents that has a circle for things I want to make, things I have time to make, and things that are worth keeping (i.e. not adding to clutter). The center space is tiny, if it exists at all, especially around Christmas! And - funnily enough, I just placed a JoAnn's order for that Merry Mingle yarn 😆 I think you and I saw the same video!
I broke down and ordered the merry mingle too! Shorty after filming this 😂

It was a hard truth when my husband told me that our kids and grandkids don't want and don't appreciate the things that I make for them. It made me sad. Then I realized that was me projecting my own feelings loving handmade items, onto some people that don't want them. I think they all appreciate the effort & thought, but don't need or don't want to own those items. The actual truth is that we have an extremely large family (7 kids and many grandkids) and it's hard to keep up with trying to make gifts. So I'm ok not trying to make gifts for everyone anymore. I've told them all that if they want something, just ask. Of all our grandkids, I have 4 that regularly ask for handmade items. Frankly that's plenty to try to keep up with, so this approach is working. The extra stuff that I make, I put in a couple of totes, bring them out a couple times a year at family gatherings and anyone can take what they want. Things that don't get taken get donated, etc I realize that I will make things regardless of whether anyone in my immediate family wants them or not. I just make stuff. Also, there are plenty of kids in our community that don't have hats, mitts, etc for winter, so usually I bring a box of hats, mitts, scarves, cowls to the local schools and they keep them in the office, so that if a kid needs something so they can go outside at recess, then they can take it and keep it. No pressure on me to finish certain things on a deadline, and no pressure for me to stop making stuff. It also gives me the "feel goods" to give to families that really need something. As a side note, my mom and dad always ask for a couple pair of handknit socks for Christmas, and a couple of our kids and kids-in-law like handmade items as well. Take care & happy holiday season!
That is hard to hear but it sounds like you’ve got a great attitude and plan! You have a wonderful holiday season too!
@@ShannonTalksYarn You're right. I have a plan and once over the initial shock, it's actually kind of a relief. Not as demanding and I get to make more of what I want to make. Have a wonderful holiday season.
my mother ASKED for a crocheted cardigan for her birthday, it was in 4 ply black yarn, she hasn’t worn it once and it’s been 6 years
Oh nooooo!
Hi Shannon 🤗 we quickly work out who appreciates our crocheted gifts! 🥰🧶🤩
We sure do!!! I hope you are doing well my friend ❤️
I have found it helpful to understand that different people show their appreciation in different ways. My dad has worn a pair of socks I knit him until they got huge holes on the soles (currently waiting to snatch them and mend them to their former glory). But I know other people who feel like hand knit gifts are too precious to be worn down and they might save them for special occasions or just sentimental value.
That is such a good point!
