I mean, I’m going to be 80 in November-if I make it to 100, I’ll still have yarn left! So, I quit telling myself “no more” because I turn into an instant rebel. My middle name should be saboteur! 🧶🤣😂. I’m working on it tho🥸. I love your yarn colors/palettes! Thanks for another helpful video.
I know right! I have enough yarn to last two lifetimes. I’ll never ever use it all. But then these hand dyers put another beautiful color on Facebook or Instagram and I’m unstoppable. It’s crazy 😜
A visual reminder of the yarn you are anxious to use instead of hiding it in a bin is an awesome idea and one I should use. The psychology behind this way of thinking is proven. If you tell a child to stop running in the house, all they hear is run! Whereas if you just say the word walk it works. Never fight for peace. The fight will over power the peace every time.
Until the storage room becomes my craft room, I have yarn in a few places but what I have in a curio cabinet is in full view behind glass so I gravitate towards it more. What I have stored in a tiny closet is out of site, out of mind and I seem to fahgettaboutit ❣️
I have a large yarn stash in my craft room. However, I've come up with a rule of sorts when purchasing yarn. I can only purchase the amount of yarn consumed by my last project. So, if my last project happened to be a couple of potholders and I used 6oz. of cotton yarn, I write that in a notebook, and next time, I have the urge to buy more yarn, I can only purchase that amount of yarn or less. The only time I break that rule, is when I run short of yarn that I am in the midst of crocheting or when I plan a project from my stash, but will need a small amount that is not in my stash. But, you know, rules are meant to be broken and nobody's perfect, LOL!
Yes, my yarn room is full! I have a bin to donate and fall projects set aside to start as I finish up a few. Now with that said, I just sat down with my husband and a Hershners magazine. We picked out yarn for my Christmas present. Yes the budget was set and that will have to be it for the winter. It’s fun! Thank you for helping put things in perspective. Be Well
I am in “finish your WIPs” mode. I have pulled out projects that I have left unfinished from last year and am working to get those finished before I start a new project with my stash yarns. I am excited to finish some things as well as get to new projects. Thanks for the great video! 💜😁
I'm so picky with my yarn and I have so little space to put it, that I don't even have to tell myself that I shouldn't buy more because I won't anyway 😅 I mostly only buy yarn when I need it for a specific project
After a few years of keeping my ever-growing stash in opaque black ikea Trones mounted on the wall, my husband figured out that I needed to be able to SEE what I had. So we purchased book cases with glass doors so I could do just that. It has helped tremndously . Out of sight, out of mind is very true...and now I don't duplicate purchase and can visually plan what I will make next!
Legitimately told myself last week I didn't need more yarn, by the weekend I went to three stores and bought more yarn. lol I started using a few spare tote bags as "Project Bags" and have been working through all my random yarns to make an eclectic granny square blanket. :)
The first time you started explaining what a 'use first' bin was, I realized I did the same thing for my fabrics only I didn't have a label for it. Though, after you talked about it, I got into my yarn stash, and made one for my yarn too. It's a great idea, especially if you don't get to a yarn before the end of the season you can just put it back and use it next season when changing yarns out for the next season. 🧶🧶🧣🧣 But also, a little denying yourself something can also be hard to live up to. Like with dieting, if i deny myself candy, it's harder to stick to, but if i allow myself smaller portions of it as like a reward to myself. It's easier. I try to apply that mindset to most aspects of my life. So, when I shop, I just don't go hog wild. I'll allow myself one thing, OR one projects worth of materials. This works... most of the time. 😉🧶🐿
My yarn stash is my adult answer to the barbie dream house I always admired as a kid but didn’t have. It’s crazy but I really enjoy my stash and it’s kinda good for me. That said - I hardly buy any yarn now. I am definitely full up. Thank you for sharing your perspective here. You make such good sense.
I was already planning to use a couple of specific clear totes for yarn, but now I want to make ALL the clear totes be for my favorite crafts. The opaque ones can be for "boring" stuff like out of season clothes or stuff that's only seldom used. More efficient to catalog bins opened only a couple times a year. I'll have to consider making my fabric easier to see as well so I might actually use it. 😂 (If I don't sew with all my clearance remnants I could make it into yarn!) And I do have a t-shirt that says "I crochet but my favorite hobby is collecting yarn." 🧶
THIS!!! What a great metaphor! I totally agree, the scarcity mindset and limitations are just as applicable in both nutrition and shopping. Thank you for sharing your first bin method, it's pretty cool! I can relate with the urge to buy yarn, there's so many interesting and wonderful colors and textures. I keep myself in check just saying to wait. I keep my stash fairly small and I enjoy buying in batches and using them before replenishing the inventory. Love the scarf!
I had the same idea with a different approach: I’ve listed on whiteboard the projects I want to complete Sept - Dec. then I got a tub & pulled yarn from my stash for each project. This easily showed me I don’t need to buy yarn for the rest of the year to complete those 18 items! Thanks for all your helpful tips!
Once i focused on buying natural fibers, particularly plant-based yarn, it became a lot easier to avoid buying every pretty colorway i saw. Saving up for the fiber festival near me helped too, because i got to buy all the yarn i wanted within my budget- it'll be awhile before i think about buying any more, and i'm gonna start saving for next year first thing so i can buy even more >:)
Great idea - I did something similar and arranged my yarn on a shelf by project, and I’m stoked to get going every time I walk past! As for saving, I keep a list of the things I want to buy that cross my mind. Writing it down seems to take away the urgency and FOMO like ~ I could go back and get it if I wanted, it’s written down so I won’t forget. Many items I never end up buying - they would have been impulse purchases - and other items I’ve listed several times I know I would really use and are worth getting ☺️
I just organized my yarn. I don't have a use first bin. But I put all my partial skiens on a shelf and all my full skiens into bags. I do have some plans for some of my yarn. I have two shades of pink and my black yarn set aside for my flamingo shawl.
I love this idea! Very well described. I might just do this, too. I have SO much yarn that I get overwhelmed just looking at it all, let alone deciding what my next project will be. I think this might be a way for me to scale down my choices a bit. Thank you for this video. It’s so lovely seeing your familiar, pretty face, and talking about yarn! 😋
Interesting, and I get it. I've been setting my mind to something like that recently.🤔 It helped that I bought the whitish clear cubes and put together 61 of them to reorganize just part of my yarn. It really put how much I had into perspective. 🤦🏻♀️🤣 Oh well, retirement will be filled with lots of creating... when I actually do retire. 😉 Thanks and have a great day! 🩵
I love this idea, but I love too many of my yarns so I dont have the space to put them all together to use first since I want to use them all first lol. I have to do mine digitally on Ravelry. If its something I know ill be casting on soon, I go ahead and make it a project. If it might not happen imminently, I add it to my queue so I know what yarns I wanted to use for what patterns and then I pick off of there. I do sometimes pull out certain yarns just because I like looking at them and I set them somewhere I can see them easily.
Love your idea! I’ve been thinking along the same line. I have two over the door yarn organizers coming tomorrow from Bobble&Puff. They will be used as Use This First totes, only on my doors in my bedroom. I was planning to use them as a designing lab. I love the idea of rotating these out periodically.
Sorry for the second comment, but I’m also planning a “Clean my Stash / Yarn Stash” day for our church’s yarn ministry in February! Rehome some yarns that you’re just not going to use & maybe find one (or 2) that you’ve been wanting!
Ah, friend, I feel like in my mind I have a running queue of the projects I want to start next. My stash is too small for a "use first" bin 😂 I try to queue things on Ravelry, but even then, I rarely follow it. If I don't want to make it enough to remember to make it, then it probably wasn't a top priority anyway 😂 Love this topic and your insight, as always!
Well that would be a wonderful problem to have, to much Money to spend. And I Agree! Being greatful for what you’ve got, has become a rare gift these days. And using things ’till They break before bying new or more. A LOT of people around this world cant afford yarn, or food, or pay their bills, that’s a fact. A LOT of people live on the street, in their cars, in tents. Those of us fortunate enough to have theese things in our lives should wake up everyday and feel blessed. Right no I’m feeling blessed because I can afford RUclips.
Scary! I have found some really expensive yarn from thrift stores and estate sales. One sale I walked out with a large trash bag full of wool yarn (including Noro) for $40. I have probably 15 of those large bins for storage! More yarn than I can ever use. I feel like I could open a "used' yarn store!
I get that. I have a LOT of yarn. I feel like I need to hurry up and crochet faster Faster FASTER… because I’m never gonna be done! I love the feeling of “being done” with a project. When I look at all my yarn, I just see a million projects I’m already behind on! Lol 😆
Someday when Im not raising kids, I'll buy nice yarns and so many 😍...but as of now. I really dont buy yarn without a plan. But if I had more time and money...my house would just be stuffed with it.
I mean, I’m going to be 80 in November-if I make it to 100, I’ll still have yarn left! So, I quit telling myself “no more” because I turn into an instant rebel. My middle name should be saboteur! 🧶🤣😂.

I totally said fahgetaboutit in the appropriate accent! Lol 😆
Me too! Out of sight, out of mind

Perspective really does make such a huge difference! That scarf looks amazing on you!
Thank you Kristen!

I mostly only buy yarn when I need it for a specific project
I made a huge crochet basket using t-shirt yarn and that houses my hand dyed yarns! I have a zip bag for my use first yarns! Great idea!!
That is awesome!

I wish I had mooooore yarn!!
I resorted my yarn stash so I can see it so much better and I makes me feel great about using more of my stash.
It really helps! 💯
I have so much that I’ll never use. I hope my sons learn to crochet because that’s all they’ll get when I’m gone, at this point ! 😂
Hi I'm the same I hope my son learns too as I will never use all my yarn.💝

Glad it was helpful!

Currently moving yarn to the 3rd bedroom that's going to be a second craft room. I have that much, but im trying to cut back.
Think I'll try it. Thank you for sharing.

I love this strategy. I put up bins to display yarn bc i had to get it out if closet bc i would buy more bc i child see what I had
That was totally me too!

I've become a yarn minimalist over the last few months lol. I used to be happy having a stash but then it started stressing me out.
