How Your Thyroid Impacts Your Weight

  • Опубликовано: 7 июл 2016
  • Many of us can tell when we’ve put on a few pounds or lost a few pounds, but health experts say sudden weight change may have little to do with your diet and a lot to do with your thyroid.
Jacob Goldberger, a surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System, says if your thyroid isn’t functioning properly it could take a toll on your body. “Typically if your hormone is down, you have less energy, you’re sluggish, and you don’t have the normal activity tolerance.”
If the thyroid isn’t functioning properly, a person could be diagnosed with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
“Hypothyroidism is where you don’t have enough thyroid circulating in your blood. You’ll feel tired. You’ll feel uncomfortable; you’ll feel you lose normal function. You’re sluggish,” said Dr. Goldberger.
Patients with hypothyroidism often gain weight. But patients with hyperthyroidism, where they have an excessive amount of thyroid production, have just the opposite problem. “These people are underweight. They’re very trembly, shaky, and they have trouble sleeping. They also have actual heat intolerance,” said Dr. Goldberger.
While it’s not as common as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism is caused by a disease that destroys the thyroid. “It’s an autoimmune process. The body attacks the cells of the thyroid. The thyroid stops functioning. The thyroid becomes enlarged,” said Dr. Goldberger.
Both conditions develop over time and can happen at any age. If a person has hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism it’s often treated with medication or even surgery.
“The thyroid itself is a very important organ. Those organs and that particular hormone is critical for your ability to function,” said Dr. Goldberger. He says making sure patients receive the correct amount of medication to balance the thyroid hormone is important to maintaining weight and energy.

Some of the comments here are very disturbing by people saying “stop being fat and lazy then and don’t use this aa an excuse” but the truth is… this for real has impact on your energy levels and body weight. I am a model and a trainer, i workout almost every day since I can remember myself and eat healthy. And I would still feel foggy and sluggish + randomly bloat and gain and lose weight randomly. I finally was enough fed up with this and got myself tested and what a relief that I was diagnosed with it after 25 years of my life. Apparently I was also born with it. It’s like the fog has been lifted off of me after I started taking my medication, I finally feel energized and awake! And my weight goes accordingly to my effort s😁

I was thin until I reached my 50’s and menopause and hypo thyroid happened and it was awful. I believe I was hypo much before I was finally diagnosed, but it was like turning 80 overnight. Horrific heart palpitations, joints hurt terribly and memory gone. Yes, I am now medicated, but there is so much more going on besides thyroid by the time most people are diagnosed and I find most dr’s do not treat thyroid patients with enough medication to help you get out of bed, let alone loose weight and exercise. If you’re not hypo, you cannot judge as you just don’t understand what it is like. I am luckier than most and not greatly overweight, even at almost 75. But it is a lot of hard work and there are so many things you learn you shouldn’t eat, like bread or anything that has gluten in it. I eat a small amount of bread or pasta and worry I will gain 5 pounds thinking about it. As for you guys in Europe, maybe they aren’t doing the crap to your foods that the U.S. is doing to food! I don’t live there any more, but most of what comes in our island comes from the U.S. and I only eat the fruit and vegetables, not the meat if I can help it. There are many reasons people can’t loose weight when they have an autoimmune disease, and normally most people that are hypo also end up with other issues like blood sugar going higher because of being hypo and adrenals not working well and so much more.

She forgot how to get to her job one morning even though she’s had the same job for like 20 years. roxanna mavakanian - Same.
The issue that primary care physicians and endocrinologists don’t tell their patients is when you suffer from an underactive (hypo) thyroid, the leptin “switch” is turned off. That hormone regulates our appetite and fat storage. Essentially when the leptin receptor is not regulated, our bodies refuse to burn fat cells, even when killing ourselves at the gym with what very little energy we have.
I haven’t had much luck, but here are some ways to regulate your leptin:
*1.) Increase your daily dietary fiber intake*
*2.) Limit fructose consumption* (especially high-fructose corn syrup)
*3.) Consume complex carbohydrates* (quality fruits and vegetables)
      *4.) Eat protein for breakfast*
*5.) Take omega-3* (either through supplements or by eating more foods with omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and sardines)
      *6.) Avoid severe calorie restriction*
(if you’re not getting enough calories, your body will start shutting down and disrupt your hormone production. Your metabolism will slow, as will your production of leptin)
*7.) Do HIIT (high intensity interval training)*
(as much as it sucks, HIIT workouts will stimulate large secretions of human growth hormone, which boosts fat-burning mechanisms and helps regulate leptin levels)
*8.) GET MORE SLEEP!!!!!* (at LEAST 8 hours a night. If you don’t get enough sleep at night, your body will make less leptin and more ghrelin....which is the hormone that tells your body you’re hungry. Without enough rest your body starts producing ghrelin and not producing leptin. You don’t want that)

I have hypothyroidism since last 8 year. 2minths before I was not well I had stomach infection and. Kidney stones due ot which I was admitted in hospital. I have already lost a 8 month baby and it has been 4 year for my marriage. We r planning 2nd time their it self a Dr who treated me advice me for sonography the neck and a bloodtest as he was in doubt. The results wer excess of medicine and the wrong medicine gvn by my dr leads my hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism. It's. Started loosing weight from 52kg to 42kg and so many other problems as well. This dr send me to a nice and a specialist dr and dr Krishna he stop my medicine for 6 week to see the changes. Next report was a bit ok now he asked me to wait till now and do retest t3 t4 tsh but advice me not to plan. All I'm praying to have. Baby a healthy baby I don't wanna go through those tough phase again it was very depressing losing a baby. Also my weight I don't know wts gonna happen

Good video, but we can go farther in research. Two of my sisters had Hashimoto Thyroiditis, another was just hypothyroid, two more of my siblings had the symptoms but their TSH was acceptable, so their health needs were pushed to the side, and myself, I was in the acceptable range, but I was a complainer. It wasn't until I was in my 60s that I found out my thyroid was sensitive to cabbage/kale crops. Do you think I'm the only person in my family with that problem? It's a sensitivity to circulating thiocyanates in the blood stream. It has nothing to do with how much thyroid hormone my thyroid makes. It's a recognized condition but way understudied and underdiagnosed. My next medical problem after my diagnosis was pancreatitis, which I am able to control with a stricter low sulfur diet. (my thinking was it was weird that I would have two glands malfunctioning, what are the chances that it's the same cause. For example, I couldn't drink coffee, and coffee is rich in sulfur. In the end, it seems that the health of the thyroid determines the health of the pancreas.). This has to be about some women being efficient metabolizers of sulfur compounds, and other women being poor metabolizers. How does this play out in the long run for the poor metabolizers?
