Love it ❤❤❤ Jem ran from 1985 to 1988, its was 4 years after the start of MTV. Her original name was M and was going to air on MTV. With the M theme song playing in regular video rotation. A Hasbro employee told me MTV backed out of the deal and Hasbro scrambled to come up with a new name at the very last minute. The animator who worked on the opening theme said Hasbro backed out to get a larger audience. 39 years ago (1985,) Jem started as 15 segments with other shows like Robotix, Big Foot and the Muscle Machines, and Inhumanoids on Super Sunday. Jem was made to advertise the dolls to the sisters, but have the action adventure was to hold the brother’s attention so they would not change the channel. Statistically it was the boys that were controlling the television and what was being watched. That format made it an extremely popular show, but didn’t help with the sales of the dolls. Hasbro changed up the theme song to “Jem Girl!” in 1987, to try to refocus efforts in using the cartoon to sell dolls. The doll line was cancelled late 1987, the cartoon continued until May 1988 to help push clearance sale dolls. The cartoon got new life on the USA Network from 1988-1992, but after that Jem just vanished until 2011. Check out the Barbie episode of the Toys That Made Us on Netflix, Mattel found out about Jem in November of 1985, spent 16 hours developing Barbie and the Rockers and got her to market before Jem. I asked Judy about the Jem box being pulled out of the trash and she denies it. So there is no proof of that. But I am the person who was told that story by one Hasbro employee and another Hasbro employee seemed to remember something about that same Asia tradeshow. 😂 The representation in the Holograms is one of the most amazing things about the dolls and the cartoon, especially at the time. And especially in the first year of the toy, that usually happened in the second or third year of a toy line. It’s interesting that the Jem doll box had that representation on it and the Rockers mysteriously had the identical representation. It makes you wonder. Of course, Mattel and Hasbro also use the same toy factories and employees often go over and check to see how the quality is of the lines that they’re working on. The best part is that Mattel used that model of having an African-American and seemingly Asian American friend for Barbie in almost every line, until all the dolls are Barbie. Jem was the major cultural shift in the doll aisle.
AHHHH, thank you so much for the love!! It’s so interesting to hear about the background of the show, especially about the dolls. Representation was one of the main things that drew me to the show, so seeing such a diverse cast was amazing. It’s also great to hear from fans of the Jem brand and get some behind-the-scenes intel!💞
@@pan2dapan that was from an article that suggested that the corporate lawyers for Hasbro said that they cannot use the letter M, because of copyright. It would a trademark issue, not a copyright issue. And it’s not really an issue, it’s more like layers of trademark protection. And how much protection do you want. The same paragraph from that article also suggested that Hasbro switched the Holograms from being male to female because they found out about Barbie and the Rockers being female. Mattel only found out about Jem in November of 1985 and Hasbro had prototypes of the female M and Holograms that have model numbers that date them back to November 1984 - a full year before the Rockers were designed.
@@ShalomOnyx I thought about it later, a cool thing you might’ve missed. Ford and Anne both came up with a version for each song. The episode writers in California would send a script outline and a description of what the song should be to New York City. Barry would come up with some lyrics, and both Anne and Ford would come up with a version. Ford would make a demo of each version and they would ship a cassette with both versions of each song back to California for the writers to decide which version to go with. Then the chosen version would have to be recorded in New York City. And then the dialogue for the episode would be recorded in California. The amount of back and forth between the two coasts was insane, and did not happen on any other show. And it was pre-Internet, there is a very rudimentary file transfer system back then. Enjoyed this show as a kid. Still remember watching a hole in my copy of this and Inhumanoids. Could have done without the Rio love triangle that went nowhere. This may seem weird but I'm a guy and I actually love Jem! The beautiful music and gorgeous animation done by the same people behind Transformers and GI Joe! Back in the 80s, they knew how to make shows that both boys and girls could enjoy! Heck, I even watched My Little Pony!Jem is such a glorious show that I'm glad some generations are still enjoying to this day!
@@LowellLucasJr. Not weird at all. The show was created with the same action as G.I. Joe and Transformers, so boys would like it, watch it, and keep the channel on snd their sisters would be introduced to the doll line.
I grew up on Jem, my cousins and I would always watch Jem together. I had the Jem doll my cousins had a couple of dolls and the roadster, so we would reenact things we saw in the show. Stormer and Kimber leaving their groups to form their own group was my favorite episode. I loved Stormer's brother as Aja's love interest as well. Also Shana's storyline about being torn between Jem and the Fashion industry. The storylines were fire. I would also watch Transformers and hearing Arcee's VA was the same for Stormer made me love Stormer even more.

as a Certified Old, i think Jem out did Barbie in everyway, except for the most important - the dolls. mattel had sheer dominance in everything fashion doll, they were in their prime and hasbro, or any other toy company that wanted to be in the fashion doll space, just could not even get to even touch barbie's level. as much as i also enjoy the rockers, mattel really didn't have to try with them to be successful, they lobbed a couple of animated specials out there. the music was good, but like most of the rockers (and the sensations, the slight rebrand for the second animated special) songs were just covers of already popular songs. but the dolls and barbie's own enormous name gave them the edge.
Trust me, the whole Barbie and the rockers thing was not too alleged. Much like the jam dolls that came out in the 80s, they too came out with cassette tapes featuring some Barbie original music versus Jems intro and outer intro.
@@NicoleBardot-nl7rt the only time police are involved is if there are runaway kids, pirate radio stations, or back stage at the Stinger’s concert - everything else is completely legal 😂
I totally agree with you. I also think that the Jem and the Holograms cartoon was underrated. I absolutely love the Jem cartoon series, which I have the complete series on DVD. The live action version was complete garbage. The comic book was great, I just it would have continued.
i really like the way you comment on stuff shalom - idk but you make things seem so interesting, even though sometimes i don’t know anything about the topics you’re on about and c’mon, pink eyeshadow! 😍😍. 8:10 now you know i love some destiny’s child! 🩷
I watched this on Netflix a few years ago I loved it. I think I remember maybe four songs I might not remember a whole lot but I do remember the Stingers I remember that the main singer was in the military but he got dishonorably discharge for leaving the army base to watch a performance at a bar. I mean that’s not particularly dark or anything but it’s still a little more mature than I expected for a show like this
Great primer on one of my favourite shows. Have you ever read the idw comic books? I think it does a good job of rebooting the series for the modern day. Heck even rio is likeable in it
Gen x knows this show very well and it will never be forgotten, that’s why it was pulled from movie theaters when that horrible Jem movie was made. Gen x was like hell no! 😂😂😂 No offense to the actors because those poor girls didn’t know what they were getting into when they signed on to make it.
Yes love that cartoon n I have it on dvd. Black character was my favorite. N I love intro. But another was not good. N I love the color pink n the music was so good n this show.
I love Jem! I wore ruby red star earrings to school every day. I would hold my earrings and say "showtime synergy!" I had a Jem Doll, a Kimber doll, the rockin roadster and glitter and gold Jem. They need to do a new Jem movie because the one they did a few years ago wasn't very good.
I remember seeing the reruns on the hub. Me and my sister loved the show🩷. Thank you for making a video on it. I am currently rewatching it on tubi, it makes me happy. To be honest, this was my Hannah Montana🩷. I love this show.
Jem was wild! WILD! Watch the show! Y'all missing out of the messy action! Every episode had a life or death catastrophe! And Jem is just messy! Truly Truly Outrageous! Examples: -Pizazz used a lazer gun to draw a moustache on Jem's face on her billboard ad while mid-air on a hang glider -they named the Vietnamese orphan girl, Bahn Minh (S1E14! and the final episode of the series S312)-the Vietnamese sandwich! It's like naming a kid Cheeseburger. -S1E14 the girls for some petty reason ran away causing a social worker to put Starlight orphanage at risk of closing. When the runaway girl brats meet a real homeless kid he was like, "Wow! You lived in a mansion with food? I guess they must have treated you really badly". "Actually, no" said the girls. "You must be the dumbest girls I've ever met!" bwahahahahaha! -Misfits had a functionally illiterate member who they mocked for not being able to read her contract and know where to sign it. "Look it's even upside down!" "Are you gonna sign it with an X too?" they derided. -the Misfit's company nearly blew up the Startlight mansion for orphans TWICE -one of the girls at the Mansion got high on drugs and jumped out a 4 story window of this very tall mansion! -Jem keeps toying with her manager who has a crush on Jerrica and her altar ego Jem and he has no idea it's the same person! And she has the nerve to be one to feel torn! -but yeah it was pretty much more violent than GI Joe and Transformers and laughably flew under the radar because it was the 80s and a girly girl show and the Million Moms concerned club wasn't invented yet until Power Rangers came out
Sister I just subscribed to your channel because I love Jem!!! Ps is it racist to call you sister? If do that wasn’t my intention Anyway thank you for bringing up Jem!!!

@@NicoleBardot-nl7rt the only time police are involved is if there are runaway kids, pirate radio stations, or back stage at the Stinger’s concert - everything else is completely legal 😂
YES
YESSS💖

I totally agree with you. I also think that the Jem and the Holograms cartoon was underrated. I absolutely love the Jem cartoon series, which I have the complete series on DVD. The live action version was complete garbage. The comic book was great, I just it would have continued.
I also had the DVDs as well!! Honestly, I would like to see more content.
Omg finally a video for the PEOPLE, it was THEEEE SHOWWWWW
EXACTLYYYYY
i really like the way you comment on stuff shalom - idk but you make things seem so interesting, even though sometimes i don’t know anything about the topics you’re on about and c’mon, pink eyeshadow! 😍😍.
8:10 now you know i love some destiny’s child! 🩷
My sweet Adra!! 🥹🫶🏽
You know I had to bring in a superstar for a superstar topic!
we are The Misfits, our songs are bitter
and we're gonna get 'er
Absolutely!😆
I used to record the songs off of the TV. I had an entire jem and the Mitsfits tape❤
Lucky!!!😭
i could hear parts of your video. Like what I did hear. And yes I did watch Jem growing up.
i agree out of all the 80s shows that get over praised like transformers thunderdcats etc jem perfectly captured that era in animated form
EXACTLY! We moved on to quickly with Jem😫
I watched this on Netflix a few years ago I loved it. I think I remember maybe four songs I might not remember a whole lot but I do remember the Stingers
I remember that the main singer was in the military but he got dishonorably discharge for leaving the army base to watch a performance at a bar. I mean that’s not particularly dark or anything but it’s still a little more mature than I expected for a show like this
I love watching Riots past!! My only regret is not mentioning him more in this video 😫
Great primer on one of my favourite shows. Have you ever read the idw comic books? I think it does a good job of rebooting the series for the modern day. Heck even rio is likeable in it
They have comic books?!😳😭
You should totally come to Jemcon!!!
Wait, that sounds fun!!💞😫
You have a really nice voice.
Thank you!!😚
Gen x knows this show very well and it will never be forgotten, that’s why it was pulled from movie theaters when that horrible Jem movie was made.
Gen x was like hell no! 😂😂😂
No offense to the actors because those poor girls didn’t know what they were getting into when they signed on to make it.
Super jealous of how you Gen Xers grew up with such quality cartoons!
And yeah, that movie definitely wasn’t it… 😬
Dang it Rio, quit cheating on your girlfriend with your girlfriend.
Dang it Jerica, just tell him already.
still my favorite cartoon ever.
Bro needs to stop playing😫 Sis also needs to stop playing😭
Yes love that cartoon n I have it on dvd. Black character was my favorite. N I love intro. But another was not good. N I love the color pink n the music was so good n this show.
I watched when I was 10 early in the morning it came on the hub
I love Jem! I wore ruby red star earrings to school every day. I would hold my earrings and say "showtime synergy!" I had a Jem Doll, a Kimber doll, the rockin roadster and glitter and gold Jem. They need to do a new Jem movie because the one they did a few years ago wasn't very good.
Aww, that is so cute!!
i never thought to see you with a pink hair? it suits you
Gotta experiment 😊 Thank you!!
I remember seeing the reruns on the hub. Me and my sister loved the show🩷. Thank you for making a video on it. I am currently rewatching it on tubi, it makes me happy. To be honest, this was my Hannah Montana🩷. I love this show.
YESS Hannah Montana and Jem are two of my favorite shows!!🥹
This reminded a bit of Julie and the phantoms
Gotta check it out!!
Jem was wild! WILD! Watch the show! Y'all missing out of the messy action! Every episode had a life or death catastrophe! And Jem is just messy! Truly Truly Outrageous!
Examples:
-Pizazz used a lazer gun to draw a moustache on Jem's face on her billboard ad while mid-air on a hang glider
-they named the Vietnamese orphan girl, Bahn Minh (S1E14! and the final episode of the series S312)-the Vietnamese sandwich!
-the Misfit's company nearly blew up the Startlight mansion for orphans TWICE
-one of the girls at the Mansion got high on drugs and jumped out a 4 story window of this very tall mansion!
-Jem keeps toying with her manager who has a crush on Jerrica and her altar ego Jem and he has no idea it's the same person! And she has the nerve to be one to feel torn!
-but yeah it was pretty much more violent than GI Joe and Transformers and laughably flew under the radar because it was the 80s and a girly girl show and the Million Moms concerned club wasn't invented yet until Power Rangers came out
DANG!!… the misfits should’ve been jailed a long time ago😳 and now that you mentioned it, I don’t remember any police in any of the episodes…
@@ShalomOnyx too busy with GI Joe I guess
This show was so amazing, was a bummer that the live-action film adaptation was so terrible
😭😭😭
Sister I just subscribed to your channel because I love Jem!!!
Ps is it racist to call you sister? If do that wasn’t my intention
Anyway thank you for bringing up Jem!!!
#DisneyDiva ❤
U make a fine ass Jem...
Hi
The cartoon is certainly better than the live action film.
😭😭😭
The show was never underrated at all. The problem is that they never made a cartoon movie.
