  • In this video I show you how I replaced the ignition lock in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. Proceed at your own risk. Always disconnect the battery when working on ignition components.

    My Guy! I knew it was that door/cover causing a sudden sticking action. Unfortunately found out to be very careful taking out the cylinder. My springs and door went flying out it was so loose. Nearly had a heart attack, but I actually found them all. Unbelievable. Thanks for the detailed info. Spot on.

    Well you're almost there you have to get the little brass door open and and there's little Springs guides for the cylinder to correspond to the key if you don't get your New new key lock cylinder conform to the old one it won't work for some reason I tried that before I watched your video and that's what I came across my vehicle will start but then turn right off heads up on learning how do-it-yourself or take it to a locksmith so they can make sure your tumblers matched up with your new one

    Great vid and explanation. Right up until the very end. Reset the code on the radio? What code?

    • @hartshut
      @hartshut  21 день назад

      @@xmas4203 if you disconnect your battery the stock radio will not function unless you go through the process of unlocking the theft deterrent feature. This requires a code. I believe the factory used a default code on all the radios. I found mine in the owner’s manual. If someone changed the code, you will need to know the new code. Reset the code was not the right choice of words. I should have said “use your code to reset the radio”.

      @@hartshut That explains why I've never needed a code. I don't have the theft deterrent feature. It's an 02 and I've disconnected the battery a half billion times over the past 22 years. 😁
      Thanks for the response.

    Do you need to keep an old key to be able to turn your passenger side airbag off and on or will the new key work?

    How do you do this without the original key? My key is broken and stuck in the ignition and i can't turn it

    • @hartshut
      @hartshut  5 месяцев назад

      If your key is broken off in the ignition, you should be able to turn the ignition with a screwdriver or the tabs on the lock. Unless the broken off part of the key is not all the way in or it doesn’t have all the teeth of the key remaining on the broken off piece. Unless the cover for the pins and springs has fallen off completely. I’m only guessing here. If the key was broken trying to turn the lock, I think there may be something preventing the lock from turning. In my case it was the piece that covers the pins and springs (I referred to it as a door or cover. See video thumbnail). That piece is oriented downward towards your knee if you’re sitting in the driver seat. In my case I had to pull the cylinder lock away from the steering column as much as possible and use a very small and thin flat screwdriver to get into the small gap and push up on the piece covering the springs and pins. It had come loose and dropped into a slot in the steering column that needs to be there for a tab on the lock cylinder. If you have a new lock, look at it and you will see what I mean. Pushing up on the cover gets it out of the slot and will allow it to rotate. Then you should be able to turn the ignition lock. Without being there I know I could be completely wrong but that is my best guess. Hope this helps. Good luck.

      Does the cylinder turn with the key? Is it stuck in the run position? I guess what I’m trying to say is you must have the key even if you can’t get it out and you must be able to turn the cylinder to the off position.
