They should go to a workplace that's managed by competent people, then.
If someone's not pulling their weight, they should be either corrected, or gone.
If someone's doing more than their part, they should be either rewarded, or leaving.

Some coworkers are bent on doing less. Then they'll sit back, gossip, and are genuinely happy when others fail. What's worse is when there is no one to check them, they do whatever they want. The management has no backbone.
Slowly, you almost isolate yourself because you're trying to get things done. With no one helping or at least trying not to talk about people all day like everyone else.

I think Dave forgets that "being somebody" for most companies doesnt get you anywhere anymore. Most 'quiet quitters' have dedicated their work and gone above and beyond for their employer just to have someone else who did less get promoted or get a bigger raise. There's no incentive to "go above and beyond your call of duty" when you get paid the same no matter what. Which is also why so many people have started the route of creating their own startups of some sort.
Edit: to those who disagree and say quiet quitters are lazy, you are seriously misdefining what a quiet quitter is. You can't "quiet quit" unless you've done more than your fair share to begin with. Quiet quitting is the idea of people who are already working more than they should, and slowly "going back" to doing "as they should". And sadly, that kind of drop off is enough to get people fired even if they are still meeting their requirements (which actually only ADDS MORE to how 'above and beyond' they've been). Quiet quitting is not "lazy people getting lazier." That's just called being lazy.

    • @r.rodriguez4991

This world is stupid, full of slackers. In any job you will need to bare with them. If you like working you will be the one doing their jobs and not being appreciated for it. People no longer have work ethics. If you like working, not loosing your ethics and not doing others jobs without recognition, save some money and open your company. Unfortunately that's the only option now.

You go Dave!!! Spot on!!! Almost every job I had in a leadership role I came in to a situation like your caller was describing. Holding people accountable quickly turned things around. I gave people a chance to change and if they didn't they were terminated. Probably harder to do today but I believe it still can be done. Thanks for your show and advice; I always enjoy both!

Good for you. Some people will never change, no matter how many times they are given a chance. They just have to move on or be moved on.

Except she didn't like being in leadership & went back to her old job. Ken said she had a chance to fix things & didn't.

Not enough info here. When does she plan to retire? Can she afford to retire? How many more years does she plan to work? Can she start her own business or create a job for herself? What are her skills?

Like Doctor Deloney says, “You go with you.” A change of environment is nice, but you also have to examine if you yourself are the issue. The tone and motive sounds like she is more of the problem and coworkers are less of the issue.

Not necessarily. The co workers are an issue because management allows it. I decided to work for me only so I don't have to deal with the situation she's describing.
You really have to examine yourself. I know I cannot stomach lazy coworkers, since it affected my work. I let the lazy yappers be, and moved on. Not looking forward to working in that environment again, ever.

That's how it is everywhere now. Worry about yourself not others and stay where you are

Hhhm I've worked with people like her and they just make out they are the most conscientious but actually have no ideas and no real input to the workforce. I'd be cautious about her claims
