TRASHED & FILTHY: Unbelievable Laminate Dresser MAKEOVER

  • This transformation is like night and day. I did what I could to keep this 70s laminate and wood dresser full of mouse droppings out of the dumpster. It's sturdy, but just terribly neglected. It had no feet/casters, the drawers barely worked.
I used a new-to-me paint colour from Fusion, Wood Wick, and made a very diluted paint wash for the drawers out of the same colour, sealing with Odie's Wood Butter. I also added new brass casters; a bit of bling and the icing on the cake.

Side note- it's been brought to my attention that the auto-generated subtitles labelled "Hantavirus" (when I was talking about the droppings) as HAUNTER VIRUS. HAHA! Which is comical, but in all seriousness... it's Hantavirus. lol
Also- I just realized that in the video I said I paid $40. I didn’t! It was initially listed at that price but it was only when the previous owner dropped it to $20 that I contacted them. Sorry about that! Totally escaped me during the voiceover.

One of my favorite transformations you’ve ever done. In my culture when someone makes an amazing dish that warms people inside out, we say, “You put your foot in that!” Certain family members’ recipes can be copied to a T but will never come out the same. This is what makes you such an incredible artist: no one can do what you do. They can use all the same products, tools, and techniques, but it just wouldn’t come out the same. You have a gift. 💜

Hello and Happy Monday! Wow that dresser turned out stunning! I like the color scheme on this one, Angie! Good call on the "dark taupe" Fusion paint. The dresser gives me Beach House vibes with the whitewash effect on the drawer faces. That's what it reminds me of. I normally would'nt go for this color scheme but the gold hardware ties it all together. I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Ah yes, the Hantavirus. Mice are cute little critters but yeah they are carriers of all sorts of nasty bugs and things. I'm glad you brought in the mouse expert, Willow. I have just now watched this video…I had to comment. I am amazed…that was one ugly piece of furniture…I cannot imagine anyone buying this new. When you finished, it was just beautiful….why would anyone have manufactured it to look the way it did originally? After you finished your makeover anyone would be proud to own and display that chest it in their home. As usual…you did a beautiful job. Thank you for a great video. (Also that dresser you painted dark grey and drew the huge flower on the front is one of my favorites)

Funny you mention the over-clamping on the drawer sides..I learned the hard way. Thankfully it was not a life-ending moment for that drawer LOL

Well now, gather 'round and listen to the tale of a dresser, once grand and noble, fallen from grace, and left to languish in the dark corners of a barn. Time, as it does, played its cruel tricks, and I, once proud and polished, found myself buried under a mountain of mouse poop and dust. My laminate sides, once the envy of all other furniture, now chipped and battered, my dignity gnawed away by rodents. I was destined for the trash heap, or so it seemed.
But then came Angie, a woman with a keen eye for potential and a heart big enough to see the beauty hidden beneath layers of grime. She pulled me from my dismal fate, dragging me into her workshop, which was as lively and bustling as a Mississippi riverboat. She looked at me, not with pity, but with determination. “We’ll fix you up,” she said, her voice as sweet as a southern belle’s.
First, she stripped away my old hardware, and with it, a part of my past. The vacuum roared to life, sucking up years of neglect and mouse droppings. It felt like shedding an old skin, painful but necessary. She scrubbed me clean, every inch, inside and out, until I was almost respectable again.
Then came the sanding, and oh, how her hands moved with the skill of a seasoned carpenter. She smoothed out my rough edges, stripping away the faux finish to reveal the mismatched wood beneath. I was nervous, uncertain what she would find. But Angie didn’t flinch. She repaired my loose drawer bottoms, tapped them back into place with nails, and fixed the split in one of my sides with wood glue and clamps. It was like a visit to a fine doctor, and I was starting to feel whole again.
She filled my pitted top with wood filler, sanding it down until it was smooth as a river pebble. Then she applied primer, sealing in my imperfections and readying me for a fresh coat of paint. The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Angie chose a color called “woodwick,” a rich hue that seemed to breathe new life into my old bones. She applied the paint with care, each stroke a promise of a brighter future.
Angie wasn’t content with mere surface beauty. She re-routed the grooves on my top drawers, enhancing my features and giving me a sharper, more defined look. She used a paint wash technique to tint my wood, adding a subtle gray that brought out my warmth and character. Even my old hardware, tarnished and worn, was given new life. She cleaned and polished it, preserving its vintage charm.
New casters were fitted to my base, lifting me off the ground and giving me a sense of elegance I had long forgotten. I felt like a dignified old gentleman, spruced up and ready to face the world once more.
And then, the ultimate test. Angie’s cat, Willow, was brought in for a sniff test. If there were any lingering odors from my mouse-infested past, Willow would surely detect them. But the cat sniffed and then turned away, uninterested. I was clean, truly clean.
As Angie stepped back to admire her work, I felt a surge of gratitude. She had seen beauty in my imperfections, worth in my worn-out frame. I was no longer destined for the dump; I was reborn, ready to serve once more. Angie had given me a second chance, and for that, I would be eternally grateful.
So here I stand, a testament to the power of transformation, the beauty of second chances. Thanks to Angie, I am once again a proud dresser, my wood gleaming under the gentle caress of sunlight. And who knows? Perhaps one day, I will find a new home, where I will be cherished once more.

It came out really awesome! I got a dresser like that with a serpentine front. "The grain" was the same icky yellow. I stripped it. The drawer fronts were veneer though and my daughter wanted to paint it so we chose a Fusion purply-blue that didn't mix well. The brush strokes had streaks of blue and red but the overall look was an interesting purple. Finishing with a wax gave it a luminous glow. 'Course, everything that I did I learned from you! Thank you so much for sharing.

It's a pity that the manufacturer was so quick to slap faux wood grain on the draw fronts. You can see that if they hadn't designed the drawers the way they did, you could've gotten a more cohesive look to them.
Oddly enough I don't see a difference between with/out the laminate (busyness (?)). At least what you did makes it less dated. 💜💜💜

Stunning ,yet again. Incidentally that "Second chances" quote is kinda why I use pallets for so many projects, it's in many cases alot more work than just getting milled lumber. My father in law is a cabinet maker and he always jokes that I saved the fire from the quality of the wood I used.

Growing up, I had a desk in my bedroom with a similar laminate top. It was very badly scratched and scuffed; I always wondered if/how it could be repaired since it was almost a plastic-like surface.

I love what you did to this piece. Here is my fantasy:
I would ask you to close the hardware holes and paint the drawers, to match the frame. This piece is so basic, I would put a piece of marble on top and put some kind of silver vintage hardware on the drawers and vintage casters. I know it's crazy because of what you started with but that is what I thought about afterwards. So impractical of me!!!
To me to this is a black dress. You can do so much with it. Thanks for the video!!!

That’s beautiful! I have been redoing a dresser that was my mom’s but 1 of the drawers is missing the top and I’m stumped on how to fix it. I’m good at painting, cleaning them, sanding, all that but major repairs aren’t in my abilities.

Aw I thought you were too hard on that piece. It wasn't so bad. She would have looked pretty snazy in her day. I think I saw the same potential you did right away. The hardware was elegant and interesting. I thought the drawer fronts were very dull with the stain you chose. I thought you screwed it up. I was thinking a better choice would have been a regular walnut stain, but clearly you did something else to them because they look great in the final looksie. You always do that. I think you messed up with your choices and then BAM. You prove me wrong. Great job again. That looks better than it would have brand new.

The mismatch in the wood grain isn't so bazar that it makes it intolerable. I like it. I also think that your choice of colors helps 'sell' the variety in the wood grain. Well. done!

There's a programme over here called Money for Nothing where the presenter is given permission to trawl the dump for stuff to repurpose. Some of the furniture people dump is criminal... why don't they give it to a thrift store, there's loads over here...

Came out great! I wonder if you used oxalic and peroxide to bleach the draw faces, if that would've evened them out further to match better. What a difference.

I love doing paint wash + sanding. A while back, I got some ikea dressers made of solid pine, gave it a blue/teal paint wash and sanded it back a lot. It made it look like well-worn denim and I was very pleased with the result

Very similar to my parent’s bedroom set, which I still have. Their whole set was that whitish finish, top, sides, and drawer fronts. Mom proceeded to paint it all white with a blue top.

Love it! We had a dresser just like this for my son got it for $100 in the want ads and it has been more solid sturdy dresser for him. We painted it for him as a baby and repaint it again as he got older he still using it. Like you said good solid built furniture can’t beat it.

I have a similar dresser out in my shed, I am not sure what I will do with it yet, As I do have the matching night stand to it as well. Also took a similar dresser and took the two top drawers out and sanded it all down and stained it, I am using that as a media cabinet now. great storage with two drawers on each side and holes were the two drawers were at the top it is perfect for gaming consoles dvd/vhs players or any set top box really. I have a turntable and a computer in it right now with a small set of 2.1 speakers that are hidden in it.
