Restoring a broken & worn out teak chair : trash to treasure

- This chair is UN-sittable (technical term, haha). It has loose joinery, breaks and cracks, the wood is incredibly weathered from years of neglect, and is filthy. I don't work on chairs very often, but couldn't resist these. It's not apparent immediately, given the state they are in, but these chairs are made of a lovely and valuable wood.

I love your channel and also AT restoration. Happy to see these videos
Angie, I actually got the type of wood correct! I could not believe it since I know nothing about wood types. Your hints were helpful and I was wracking my brain. As you continued sanding it finally hit me, it reminded me of a round teak dining room set my parents had back in the 1970's which I really loved. I surprise myself sometimes. 😂
A jaw-dropping competition. I'm glad it's a friendly one, because it sure was like comparing apples, oranges, pears and mangoes...No way could I choose one; they were all so different and showcased amazing skills: your loving nurture of the wood's character and qualities (and your understated mentoring skills for all of us!); then the wood turning!; then the caning!; then the gilding and upholstery! What a cornucopia of fabulous videos! (I'm afraid it's a wash on my part, since I "liked" them all!
Thanks for the great job on the chairs project! Really appreciate the hand work and sound bites. Are you in Canada?
Even if you don't win the competition, you win the award for best staging.
This chair was sad and broken, but in its revived state, no one would ever know. Exceptional restoration, and I especially love that you filmed the reveal outside, with you in it, watching a river go by. Beautiful. I also love your peaceful spirit, and your music. I Shazam all of the music in your videos and save it to a playlist! Your content always brings peace...an appreciated benefit. Thanks, Angie.
You're so welcome! Neat idea on the Shazaming! (I doubt that's a word lol)
I agree. Especially the wonderful peaceful vibe and Angie by the stream.
🤗🤝 Her work is impeccable.
👏👏👏🥂
Angie, I've been watching your channel for a couple of years. You are in great company for this challenge. The projects are so different and the skill sets needed so unique, thank you for joining this challenge and sharing your talent with us.
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
I really like what you did with that chair. It looks like it just came out of the factory. And you are in very good company with the other restorers.
I’m surprised how well the canvas came out. It was so faded in the beginning. As always, it’s your attention to detail that impresses me so much. Meticulously making that wooden piece to fit two parts together in the same manner as they originally were; removing the glue around the entire joint even though most of it wouldn’t even be noticed; covering up any white spots. Anyone who purchases a piece from you, gets furniture that is as close to perfect as can be done! I’m ready for the next video in the challenge
The love she puts into every piece. 💙
This chair tuned out beautifully. I think that you did a wonderful job, and truly restored a gorgeous outdoor piece. 😊❤
Thank you so much!
I love these so much! If you did a fantastic job, and I would be happy to buy them if I lived a tiny bit closer than Ontario! Well done!
It’s beautiful!! Of course, because you did the work!! 😊 What you accomplish with every piece that you rescue is just incredible!
Beautiful work, the finish is so warm and inviting. You pulled this off with expertise and precision. I love that you took it outdoors for the finale. Awesome!
I get why you don't do chairs routinely. I made women's clothing, pants, jackets, coats, etc. but never blouses. A blouse is too much work for the results. There is very little distinction especially when the blouse is a part of a suit ensemble, it is hardly noticed for all the detail that goes into it.
I absolutely get that!! Thank you so much for watching and I'm so glad you like how it turned out. 😊
You picked a much nicer chair design than the other three guys.
This was extremely satisfying to watch, with great results.
Excellent choice of music too. I hope you win, Angie!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your kind words! 😊
Love this! You should be so honored to be invited to friendly competition with the rest of this group! Wow! Great restoration! Love the ending. ❤
I love it. Can't wait to do the matching one!
I beg to differ, the others should be honored to be allowed to compete with Angie!
Well done Angie! I recently restored a teak bench and it was so satisfying to see the warm wood shining through. Thanks for bringing us along!
You're so welcome! Thank you for joining me! 🙂
Is there anything you can't restore....your work is perfect, down to the tiniest detail...I get an education every single time I tune in
Awe, thank you so much! 😊
I've always loved the director's chair style. You've done a wonderful job here. Looking good!
I love it when RUclipsrs collaborate! It’s like The RUclips Cinematic Universe the YCU! Here’s an explosion 💥🪑💥
Wow...Love this chair! Love your work. It's great to see you do something out of your box.
Thank you kindly!
Sometimes simpler is better. You have just as much chance at winning bragging rights as the other competitors. As always, love your work.
Thank you so much! ☺️
Good stuff, obviously I’m voting for you 😉
hahahahaha LIES. ;-) Just kidding- thanks for watching, Jay :-)
I love what you did with these chairs! So happy you nailed the label symmetrically! I also follow the other challenge participants but my vote is definitely yours! Thanks so much for sharing
You're so welcome! Thank YOU so much for watching! 🙂
I once worked on 200 year old horse carriage. The teak wood was in perfect shape, despite the sun and rain. That is why this wood is so expensive.
I was super impressed by Trena's Frankenchair restoration because ... hand-caning OMG! BUT YOU GET MY VOTE FOR BEING MOST INFORMATIVE. Seriously, the golden chair was lovely but there was almost no basic information (granted, because only someone really skilled should even dream of doing this gilding restoration) ... I just really enjoy watching and listening to you.
AT restoration doesn’t talk through his videos as he is Estonian and probably not an English speaker
Thank you so much Susan! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely to watch and I loved the way you said the others will blow you clean out of the sea, but then again you said you don't specialise in chairs. After having watching all 4 vids I have to say AT restorations is going to take a hell of a lot to beat, well done anyway and best of luck.👍
Outdoor canvas: In the Merchant Marine in the days before nylon, etc. we had canvas tarps covering deck equipment, lifeboats, etc. To waterproof the canvas, we would first wet the canvas with water then paint it. I had two Director's Chairs on my front porch. They lasted 15 years with just an annual varnish and paint.
This is yet again a testament to your expertise, imagination, and character-that you were willing to try, to learn, to share, and to enjoy the benefit of the experience. I have a couple of teak rockers on my back deck that have broken slats: I might even attempt to refurbish them at some point, who knows? Thank you for all you do!
Wow, thank you! Yeah, this is NOT my wheelhouse at all, but still fun to join in. :-)
OMG. This chair is perfect. You did a great job on it, and the reveal scene was spectacular. Wow!!!!❤❤❤
I'm so glad you like it!! ☺️
Sometimes when I’m out in the forest i come across chairs or benches. Clearly placed there by a private person. A beautiful hidden gem of a place. A view, a stream or something else that makes that place special. I love those places, so obviously someone’s favourite. The reveal reminded me so much of those chairs 🥰 and I can really see your chair as one of those, enhancing the experience of beautiful nature with a beautifully restored chair 💕💕
Thank you so much for watching!! I'm so glad you like how it turned out. 😀
I already watched AT Restoration earlier today and, I must say, it's a bit difficult judging a deck chair against a gold leaf chair from a Russian palace with french velvet upholstery 😂😂. However, your chair is much more relatable and has given me inspo to refinish my own teak deck chairs. Imma vote for you both😊👍.
Hahahaha you’re so right! And none of us knew what the other was going to be working on. 😂
That turned out so nice!! And thank you for putting the plate on straight as that bugged me when I first saw it on the chair lol. I loved the ending!!
You're very welcome! I couldn't leave it like that. 😊
And this is why I watch your channel the most: I dutifully watched (fastforwarded) through all the videos, but I realise that I really don't care about chairs. But very useful video, since that is probably the type of chair that the largest number of people need restoration on: Weathered outdoor chairs.
It's definitely a common problem, especially around here. We have four very distinct and extreme seasons.
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Same here in Denmark. Well, having coastal climate evens it out a bit. But then it rains and rains and rains.
Wonderful work Angie! The chair turned out awesome! I love that you straightened the name plate... I chuckled at your comment on that... and I agree! Great videography as well.
Thank you so much! 😊
I broke the rules and voted for 2 channels. This competition was really about comparing apples to oranges to bananas to pears. All channels have excellent content. But AT restoration and John's Furniture were on another level and I couldn't choose between them. I am a huge fan of Transcend Furniture,, Angie regularly turns dross into gold. And she is a solid craftsperson when it comes to repairing damage, but not on the same level as the other three. She has a different business model and works on a different type of furniture. John's Furniture: Wow. The whole package. Trained from youth by an expert. She wove a chair back and bottom! AT Restoration: I have come across this channel before. Haven't really followed it because it's a type of furniture and restoration that you just don't see much in North America. And what he does is so complex! Amazing restoration. Like John's, such a high skill level. Finally, Fixing Furniture. You can learn so much about repairing joinery on this channel. The most informative video in the competition, but probably suffered in the judging because the finish was left for the customer to do so the end result wasn't "pretty". Both Fixing Furniture and Transcend Furniture Gallery are great teaching channels for people with ordinary skills and shops. John's and AT's show what seasoned professionals can do. Long story short, I am so glad they had this competition. I was under the weather today, so watched all 4 videos back to back. Great content!
Gotta be teak! Wow! You should get some points for that. It is expensive, and it is an amazing wood. You see less and less real teak in consumer furniture so solid teak pieces are impressive.
Angie, you did a great job restoring this chair. It was looking very rough from weathering, let alone the damage, but you hit it out of the park as always! Loved the fact you staged it in the beautiful outdoors. I hope you win the challenge! ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you very much for watching! 🙂
Angie you’re the original furniture restorer I watched and always love your work. This was great. Outside your normal work but that was an exceptional restoration. Thanks I always learn something new from your work.
Thoroughly enjoyed this restoration both for the novelty value (a rare resto) and the quality of your work.
As I've said before, I love teak, it has to be my favourite timber and your love for what you do really shines through.
Thoroughly loved the work and I have my fingers crossed 🤞
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Beautiful restoration as always! Im tempted to like your video now, but will honor the friendly competition aand give the other videos a viewing first ;). Yours is the only restoration channel i watch regularly. I really enjoy your style, both with your restorations and also your editing ;)
Thank you kindly! I really appreciate that! 🙂
Only about five minutes in, but I'll take a guess on what kind of wood... Teak? You mentioned the wood was often used on ships, and that's the only one I could think of. Again, you've made magic with wood. Also, it's a testament to the camaraderie of the woodworking community in general, and the community you are building on your channel in particular that people are reaching out to you to participate in these friendly competitions. I chalk that up to more of your magic at work.
Nailed it. 😉 Thank you so much for your continued support and kind words. ❤️
Outstanding, as usual! I love your attention to details like picking out the dust and trimming the glue. ❤
Thank you :-)
Nice job! You have revived it so well, and I bet that the Odie's Oil makes it last years longer. I love seeing pieces that were headed toward the dump get a new life!
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Angie making good use of what Jerry Rosa refers to as the high dollar glue spreader.
Way to go, Angie! Your chair looks amazing and it’s always fun to see you try something new!
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Even the canvas came out nicely. Obviously a quality outdoor product. A really good looking result.
Good luck in the completion - 2 more for me to watch now.
It's my birthday, so I feel no guilt in doing nothing and binge-watching it all !
Oh! Happy birthday! :-)
Love this restoration. Teak is always a favorite!
Thank you so much! 😊
Against a background of white birch; lovely.
I really like teak furniture, and I would love to have a home with outdoor chairs like these. You did such a respectful and detailed restore. It was fortunate that the canvas seats and backs are in good enough condition to just need laundering. You and Andrea could really enjoy sitting outside once the second chair is done. As far as I'm concerned, you're the winner! 😁😍 See you next time, Angie. 😊😘🤗👍👋
Thank you so much! ☺️
It was sad and dilapidated. Now it looks good for another 10 years at least!
Such a beautiful chair, and the setting you picked for staging really showed it off for how it is meant to be used! ❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you like it! 😁
I'm voting for yours because it's the kind of project a random person could do in their garage with no special tools (with the exception of the tenon). It would take a long time and it wouldn't be to your level of quality, but this is the kind of thing people used to do instead of throwing furniture away.
Thank you so much for watching!! 😊
Watched 3 of the restorations. including your , Angie… gave up watching the other 2 and just saw the ends…and one didn’t even mention your channel being involved ??!(hopefully an oversight?!)…too long and didn’t like constant self praise in one in particular!….Anyway, excellent standards, very different types of restoration… I always admire your even handedness…and modesty .. despite your meticulous attention to detail… loved the outdoor reveal, by the way…And that you explained honestly, why you can’t afford to do chairs, and that you don’t do commissions…all of which makes sense..of course👍…You took part in a friendly display of individual restorations…ALL made perfect again…with appropriate skills and varying levels of available tools …I’m glad you had two chairs…as you need to sell them as a pair..and make a reasonable profit… I would be proud to have those garden chairs 👌👌… and 1 of the others I watched…Well done …Angie… 👏👏👏👏…Sue (UK)
Thank you very much Sue! We're actually keeping these chairs for our garden. 😊
6:16 in 40 years of fix-it type carpentry, I have NEVER thought of using a wadded up rag for clamping a difficult piece. I’m pretty sure you didn’t invent this method, but you are the first person I’ve ever seen do it. I’m sure it’s not in Moxon … or even Johnson or Underhill. Thank you!
You're welcome! ☺️
Love how teak looks. You did the chair right. You have skills and talent, happy you are able capitalize on them. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much! 😊
Beautiful result! And what a treat for us to see all our favourite restoration people posting at once. Upvote for all of you from me. Thanks, Angie!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I think simple is sometimes harder to restore as there no details to hide things in. I think you should keep the chairs for your garden. They are so nice.
I’ve watched Ahti, now off to watch Trena. Not heard of Fixing Furniture! ❤
Oh we absolutely are keeping them for us. ☺️ Thank you so much for watching!
May I make a suggestion? When gluing cracks I use a can of compressed air (like you use for your computer keyboard to blow out dirt), or a compressor, if you have one. I use the compressed air to push the glue in; this works well with loose veneer too.
Thank you for the suggestion. I actually have about a dozen methods and different tools I employ for getting glue into tight spaces. This is just the one I chose for this particular situation.
Angie: every one of you are really great restorers. I like you all. This chair is a honey. I might even use the pair of chairs inside. I could certainly see them in a den/ family/ or informal LR too. Wonderful! Carol from California
Thank you kindly Carol! 🙂
What a lot of work but the chair came up looking great. Makes me sad that I threw away my set of these. Although in Australia they are made of Jarrah (Australian hardwood) and called Jarrah furniture.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
wow, you may not know much about restoring chairs... but you can't tell with this one! It's beautiful! I love that you used the original canvas, too! That deep teak color, just gorgeous! Simple project? Maybe, but there is nothing simple about the work you do... your attention to detail is outstanding!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate the support! 🙂
The wood is beautiful! That's the wonder of Teak! Maybe you can finish the other one and have chairs for your own porch-sitting!
That's the plan - they'll be in our garden. 😊
Watched all the competition videos and I just cannot believe the talent, the care, the love and the vision you all have! Love the chair and your videos.
absolutley love your chair, and I am so grateful you straightened out that metal logo label!! Ha ha, but seriously! ❤😁
I'm so glad you like it!! 😊
I love your channel, thank you. I always learn so much 😊
Aw, thank you Sally!
Love, Love, Love both you and Trena. Your transformation was amazing.
Thank you!
Ohhh, mortise and tenon is "fer og not". My woodworking English is expanding.
Glad to help! 😉
Of all of the videos, I respect yours the most. Not because the other competitors didn’t do amazing and beautiful work, but because you’re NOT working with tons of expensive tools meant for specialized repairs, and don’t have the expertise in working on repairing chairs like the others. You took on the challenge anyways, did an incredible, flawless job, and ended with a truly beautiful result. Super proud of this one!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate that! 😄
I love your patience! 😁 This little chair turned out so pretty! Hope you are having a great weekend! See you next time
Thank you!
I love your channel you have skills beyond your age I could never do what you do and I love everything that you've done even with your little chair
Thank you so much! 😊
Broken and Weathered.....? Yeah, that sounds familiar. 😁
Hahahaha
Your work is beautiful, Angie. At another time, I would give you a thumbs up and a celebratory comment as well. But sadly RT gets my vote today. You did a magnificent job on restoring these Teak Chairs, even though you don't usually do chairs. This friendly competition reminds me of a comp I entered to WIN a knitting machine back in 1972! It took me 2 weeks, but I knitted a christening robe in 2ply pure wool. It was nearly a metre long, knitted with needles as thick as a tooth pick and covered all over with the finest, complex lace pattern !! The woman who 'won' the knitting machine had knitted a men's Worsted weight (thick wool) twin set on her knitting machine which took her 3 hours to work! Go figure!? I wanted to give you a thumbs up, but Arti won my vote today 😉😘
I bet that was frustrating, since she already had a knitting machine and used it to get a free one.
Perhaps she gave her older one to someone and kept the new one.
Or she was just a very competitive person.
Hope you were able to get your own knitting machine at some point since that time.
I’m sure the christening robe you made by hand was beautiful 😍🙏
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
I refinished all my teak outdoor furniture this year because watching your channel gave me the confidence to do so! I was so glad to see this video because I did it right! Not as well as you, but I did the steps!
That is awesome! 😊 Good job!!
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Thanks for the lesson Angie! I'm glad you showed a broken arm connection because that's what I'm working on. My problem though includes a previous repair that includes a screw inside a screw! Guess where the wood broke...it looks like it is a threaded insert wrapped around a screw...rusted of course. I'll be using honey goo instead of my usual wd-40. I recently discovered it works better and I never thought I'd see that!
Beautiful job Angie, as always. ❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
Been a big fan of Fixing Furniture and AT Restorations for a while, and this year I started watching your videos and loving your style of video and the beautiful restorations you have done. That being said, in this competition I have to give you my like because you went out of your normal groove and did something amazing! Beautiful restoration as usual and I simply love the video a lot more than the others. So, you get my like!
That being said, sometimes when I am repairing a crack, where I can I like to use dental floss to get the glue down in the crack so I don't have to pry it open too much. Maybe you could give it a try sometime.
Glad to see another great video and I hope you win the competition!!!
I use the floss trick often! It’s great for super thin cracks. I believe it’s in one or two of my videos but lord knows I’ll never remember which one! Hahaha
Thanks for the love ❤️
You sir, are a genius 🫡 Seriously though I’ll remember that. ❤
I think you are the most genuine and close to regular people who do wood working as a hobby; great work, and thank you for
Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
+++++ I've posted this in the comments for all 4 videos +++++
OMG! This was so difficult. I love, subscribe, and get notifications for all 4 channels. I love each channel for different reasons:
FF Scott - your woodworking and teaching skills are fantastic!
JFR Trena - your vast knowledge and colour matching are awesome!
TFG Angie - your creativity and determination are inspiring!
ATR Ahti - your extensive experience with antiques and your attention to detail are fascinating to watch!
Thank you all. I did narrow it down to one but just for this competition because I'm addicted to all of you ❤️
It's absolutely a mortise and tenon joint. It's a floating tenon.
Yes, also called a loose tenon (I mentioned that in the video). It’s just not the typical one most people think of. That was my point.
Love that you and At restoration are doing this together. It makes it hard to pick though as you both are fantastic with totally different styles!! 😊
Thanks so much!
Oh Angie! I am subbed both to you and to Athi and I love what you both do. How can I possibly choose between you? Even though you each have different techniques, materials, styles, the results are always beautiful! I'm afraid I had to cheat the assignment and give you both a like! 😃
They are all wonderfully done but for me hands down you are the best, GREAT JOB and I am glad I found you through this competition.
Saludos y bendiciones.
She's a beaut, Angie!
Great job Angie, all you need now are some restored fishing rod's and you can use that lovely outside chair . 😀😀😸😸🐰🐰👍👍.
No losers among you. You all did great jobs. Like on all!
Awe, thank you! Much appreciated!
Good job. It is quite the transformation. I love teak. These chairs are simple and unfortunately probably loved when they were new and neglected later in life and just left in the elements. Good work on recreating the dowel/loose mortise. The fabric is most likely Sunbrella.
Your channel is one that I always hit like before I start watching, lol. I also follow AT Restoration, so I will watch that one next. I will watch all 4 and who knows, I might like them all. Knowing me, I will probably end up subscribing to the others too.
Wow! Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful work once again. Brilliant reveal!!
Thank you so much 😀
Love your staging of this beautiful restoration.
Thank you very much!
This takes me back to grandma’s 1950’s similar lawn chairs-lying in repose hoping for a new life.
Wonderful repair 🎉❤️🇨🇦 kelowna
Thank you kindly!
Using a wad of stuff to clamp an uneven surface is fantastic. Thank you for sharing that.
You're welcome! ☺️
I watch you and AT restorations I like both of your pieces but I think the outdoor chair is the best of the 2 that I watched. The end shots were great!
Gave you a like. Best of luck!
Well I'll comment instead of liking, until I've watched the other videos. But this was did to see - maybe more along the lines that i might need to undertake.
Wish I could give you a thousand likes!
Thank you!
Beautiful job, as always. 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you very much! 🙂
Fun reveal! Road trip birch east coast bushy s2amp. Love it!
It's still pretty and I bet some would just paint it! Honestly I have a small terrace and I only ever buy 2 chairs anyway.
You know the people that bought them must have loved them to hold on to them and after you applied your magic to them you can see why they did. Fantastic!!!!!
you have an eye for beauty. it's a sleek, well designed chair. functional and beautiful. enjoy
Beautiful! Love it! 💜
Dayum here in da hood we got so much broken down wood you’d love it fam an den we can hit dem clubs fo dem shots u go love da hood fam come visit 1 day my g pow pow 💥💥💥💥🙏🏿🐐👍🏿
I cheated and voted for all four of you. You’re all winners in my book! Great job!
