Another option is to make a feature out of the holes. For instance make them square and fill with a small square of veneer. It would look like the top had been pegged to the bottom in some way and would look like it was an intentional part of the design.
Another idea is to inlay squares over the holes but also do it to the worst areas over stains/gouges. Would really change the look but can save the table!
The table looks great. The repairs only make it unique and it gives it a beautiful history. Like humans, one has to go through tough times and then some TLC makes one unique. Great job. Thank you kindly :)
What a gorgeous table. Absolutely, restored it to look soooo much better. In the US, I've seen furniture refinishers use the sanding dust, mix it with wood glue cover the dowels or scratches smoothly let it dry an sand it. That process seems to blend in with the natural wood tones of the wood and is unnoticeable. Just a suggestion for another time 😉! Awesome job and video! Looks beautiful! 😊❤
The problem is dowels have the grain going the opposite direction and thus too dark. There are tools to make plugs of the same wood so the grain is the same.
This can work, I do it sometimes, but you do also have to be careful. What can happen is that while you’re filling out the hole with sawdust, general dirt and dust can get in there, and with standard PVA glue, this will turn black and look terrible. Can also happen if you sand it before it’s totally dry and thus push dirt and dust into the glue. Make sure that your sawdust is clean, as is the surrounding area, and don’t start sanding it back until it is totally dry.
I think the dowels gives the table some character.. It looks great. And you could tell how dry the top of the table was because it soaked the teak stain right up. You did an awesome job! I love it...❤❤
Hi, you did a wonderful job on the table. I never would have believed it’s the same table. You did that great of a job. See you next time. Joyce/America 🇺🇸❤️🙏
You did a beautiful job disguising the damage. Even the staging was satisfying. I always love hearing the birds in the background, this time it was the rain capturing the atmosphere.
Just a suggestion to do close-ups of problem areas in the final pics. These close-ups reveal that the refinisher’s fix may or may not be perfect, but it is good enough. This makes me feel more confident about my not perfect but good enough work. Thanks!
These Danish surfboard tables are such a beautiful, classic design. It’s almost unthinkable that somebody would drill through the tabletop to put a bunch of totally unnecessary bolts in it, but I must admit that I’ve seen worse. A great result in any case.
These holes on the top were dramatic! You did an excellent restoration! This table with its incredible legs can have now a new life! Thanks so much for sharing. Besides, I cannot think of a better way to deal with these holes but with dowels!
Wonderful work how you handled this. I love restored woodwork where you still can see imperfections and the age. This makes the restored piece real precious for me. If it looked „perfect“ - like new - I wouldn‘t appreciate it so much. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Beautiful table now it’s restored! What a superb job! I love the delicate legs with the Y look. Thank you for seeing the beauty in this table and restoring it!
Wow! Great Job!! I’m sure you heard this before but I much prefer the sounds of the wood working and the birds to any of the “canned” music. Overall I am impressed!
Terrific rescue! Those legs are so stylish. Concerning the bolt holes, I imagined incorporating the dowel fix into a ‘happy accident’ opportunity for more design. Maybe drilled the holes a bit bigger and added more holes in a small 4 dot diamond pattern. Fill the holes will walnut dowels, cut flush then finish the surface. If the legs were stained walnut to match the new inlay dots, it could all look on purpose. It’s not restoration but a redesign. Sort of Kinsugi for coffee table. Thanks for the video!
The legs reminded me of the piece in your "Diamond in the rough" video, I don't know if I felt like them just because they're different or it's just such a beautiful design element. I can't believe they drilled those enormous holes and placed those bolts in them. Totally destroyed the look of such a beautiful table. Thank goodness you were able to make it well again!
Turned out nice! Could you have used the sawdust from sanding the top, mix that with glue, to fill in around the dowels? It might have turned out just as well.
It’s a beautiful job .I enjoy seeing the love invested in furniture .The signs of its previous life, any clever repairs and so on .To me it makes it very special.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I am new to furniture restoration, only a few years in. I have a couple HUGE restorations coming up. An 1894 German Clock, and an 1840's era portable spinning wheel that came across the prairie in a wagon train. Would you be willing to impart some tips? Keep up the great work!
Use the dowels to structurally fill the holes below the surface. Then on the surface, either a matching or contrasting veneer inlay. I do like the way you colored the dowels to hide them. Thanks for the video. Jon
I’m thinking you could’ve come up with some sort of inlay as opposed to the dowels….maybe brass or a light wood matching the edges…..great table tho! Love your work!
As a carpenter and furniture builder, I love all the stains and dent’s, the bolts should go though ,But the wear and tear gives it life! A history, not just a dead tree! It lives on with a history! There’s a story in all the damage and the holes. I would keep some of that story in the table.
Thanks!
Thank you for the support 😀🙏🏻
The rain on his shed is so soothing
Love the rain in the video. Extra bonus.😊
I love working in the rain 🙏🏻
Another option is to make a feature out of the holes. For instance make them square and fill with a small square of veneer. It would look like the top had been pegged to the bottom in some way and would look like it was an intentional part of the design.
Good idea!!
2 round pièces of laiton 😊
No.
Another idea is to inlay squares over the holes but also do it to the worst areas over stains/gouges. Would really change the look but can save the table!
Or go for something totally different. Mother of pearl, opal or a piece of crystal. Why not?
Gorgeous and I loved hearing the rain too.
The table looks great. The repairs only make it unique and it gives it a beautiful history. Like humans, one has to go through tough times and then some TLC makes one unique. Great job. Thank you kindly :)
Thank you for the kind words 🙏🏻
Great looking result. The 'before' table really amazes me what people do to their furniture.

Hi and thanks for watching. I’ve also seen that solution online and maby I try that next time 🙂💪🏻
@@midcenturyflipper it's worth a try. I'm going to give it a whirl myself 😂

You saved it. It's a proper piece of furniture and can be useful now.
I love giving old used furniture new life! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
A beautiful table! You did what was needed to bring it back to its modernist glory.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Good work my friend. That was definitely not an easy fix. Good to see your face in the video 😉
Thanks! Someone whispered in my ear to show my face more often 😂

Hi, you did a wonderful job on the table. I never would have believed it’s the same table. You did that great of a job. See you next time. Joyce/America 🇺🇸❤️🙏
😅 It was a wuite challenging project but came out quite good! Thank you for watching!
You did a beautiful job disguising the damage. Even the staging was satisfying. I always love hearing the birds in the background, this time it was the rain capturing the atmosphere.
I love the sound of rain aswell. Not a bad nature sound to listen to while working.

Great work concealing the 4 holes so well!!!!
Thank you 😊

Nicely done on integrating the dowels into the table. Very nice table.
Comedy Gold with the sponge! It made me laugh. Hearing the rain while watching you stain was Oddly Pleasing! Great Restoration!
I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video! 😀 🌧️ 🧽
These holes on the top were dramatic! You did an excellent restoration! This table with its incredible legs can have now a new life! Thanks so much for sharing. Besides, I cannot think of a better way to deal with these holes but with dowels!
Thanks for the kind words! It was a fun project 💪🏻🙂
The only other thing I could think of was doing some sort of inlay look, so happy your work turned out looking so good!
It turn out so nice 👌 and beautiful 😍

Lovely
Absolutely lovely!
Thank you, Melinda 🙏🏻
Beautiful table.😊😊😊
Thank you!
All in all, I think your hand painting the dowels worked. You took a heavily damaged table and restored it as close as you could. Nice work.
Thank you 😊

You’re right! They had some similar design. The coffee table was a fun project 😀
The teak stain and oil are a beautiful choice. I like this leg design, too, because it is futuristic without resorting to metal.
Watching those nice curls of old finish coming off was sooooo satisfying.
Love the ambient sounds in the background.
Absolutely beautiful.
Isn’t teak beautiful? Lovely restore👍
Love it! Thanks for watching!
I think it turned out gorgeous ❤
Thank you!
Turned out nice! Could you have used the sawdust from sanding the top, mix that with glue, to fill in around the dowels? It might have turned out just as well.
You are a true artist. Well done!
Thank you 😊

That table is beautiful!! I have always been a fan of teak and it was a fabulous choice for this project ❤

Snyggt! Jag förstår inte hur nån kan få för sig att bulta fast träskivor på det sättet! 😂.
Tack! Nej det är rätt sinnessjukt faktiskt 😅🙈 De hjälpte inte ens till att stabilisera bordet …
Incredible Save! 👍🏼

Thank you! Rome - such a beautiful city 😍

I’m thinking you could’ve come up with some sort of inlay as opposed to the dowels….maybe brass or a light wood matching the edges…..great table tho! Love your work!
Thanks! I actually thought about adding a brass inlay but I could not find any that fitted the table 🙂

I get your ponit but not regarding this table 😅
Nice rescue.
Thanks 🙏🏻

Excellent job! That poor table…those bolts hurt my soul. Seriously. I’m so glad you were able to give it new life. It certainly deserved it! 🥰
