  • Here are my top 10 biggest influences/metal bands for me. These artists are responsible for really inspiring and pushing me to keep that passion and love for playing music alive throughout all of these years of playing guitar. Metallica had to duke it out with both Slayer and Sepultura as far as my gateway to entering the really harsh and heavier music, which this list is mostly comprised of. In the end, Slayer and Sepultura ended up having bigger ammo for this top 10 list...BUT Metallica had and still does play a big role in this whole extreme metal pie!!! I hope you guys like this one, and be sure to check out some of the bands in this video if you are unfamiliar with some of them. They are very well worth your time!
Also, go check out my uncle Frank's RUclips channel:
    / thegregbumble
    Thank you guys so much!!!

Most influential for me was one album: Imperial Doom by Monstrosity. Some of the best riffs, drumming and bass playing ever. And George Fisher tied it up nicely on vocals.
I've always wanted to play in a Death Metal band, but for some reason always end up in Thrash bands that went nowhere. We did get to open a show for Motorhead at the Ventura Theatre in Ventura, CA years ago as Kaptin Krunch. Yes, that was the band name. Highlight of my bass playing career.
Just to let you all know, playing in a band is not easy and takes a shit ton of work and dedication from every single member in the band. And if you are able to get signed, record and tour, it takes even more work to keep everything going. The bands I was in had issues with members trying to be rock stars before we even made a name for ourselves. My drummer and I were the only ones putting in the hard work sadly. And we are starting a new band in our 40s, for fun, just to play locally.

My biggest influences that changed my life were Megadeth, Death, Desultory, Iron Maiden, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, At the gates, Soilwork, Necrophobic, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and Deicide. These bands influenced me super heavy. My sound pulls bits from all of these bands. Worth noting is that I’m 38 so, when I started listening to these groups it was early 90’s so the most influential to me was the earlier stuff.

Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix. Love playing that song on guitar. I'm trying to get the solo up to speed. All sweep picking arpeggios with the solo. Insane. The rhythm part is awesome too but I got that down pretty quick.

For my influences, totally share your taste, also some Devourment, Wormed, Necrophagist, Beheaded, Cephalic Carnage, old school death metal, Demilich, Brutality, Sentenced (when they played death metal), Purtenance, Purulent, Masacre (which are also from here, my country), Death... Pestilence, well... The lists goes on and on... keep it up! You're great! Cheers.

I’m a young and novice player, so I don’t really have too much in the way of influences since I don’t write nor do I plan to at this point.
But the writing of Alex Webster is what drives me to keep playing. It’s not the hardest thing in the world, but the brutality and dump truck heavy riffs just compel me to listen and want more. Pat O’Brien’s writings are fucking killer too, but they just don’t have the same feel that I love about Alex’s. But to be frank, aside from those two, I feel no desire to derive creativity from the writings of anyone else. Hopefully that changes and updates with time.

Sepultura - Morbid Visions/ Bestial Devastation (the first extreme metal album I bought from a second hand store in 1999).
Deicide - Once Upon the Cross
Deeds of Flesh - Trading pieces
    Slayer - Reign in Blood
    Morbid Angel - Domination
Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
    Cradle of Filth - Midian
Those are some of the more influential albums that got me into extreme metal. I've always liked a cross between Death and Black metal from the onset and was lucky enough to meet a dude in 2001 that had a massive collection of cds, all the cannibal corpse albums, deicide, deeds of flesh, mortician, exhumed, dimmu, emperor, rotting christ, etc. I'd have to confer with him to jot my memory (as they were mostly his cds) as to everything we were jamming back then. I got into a whole ton of stuff on my own though like Swedish death metal, melodic death metal, 90s death metal like Death, Atheist, Cynic, Unleashed etc. I'm too much a fan of extreme music to like just one genre and being a guitarist, I take influence from everything.

Metal albums that changed my life: Bathory's Blood Fire Death, Suffocation's Effigy Of The Forgotten, Entombed's Clandestine, Bolt Thrower's IVth Crusade and For Victory and Metallica's Master Of Puppets. But the song at the root of it all, the song that not only got me into 'heavy' music at age 11 but was also the reason why I started playing bass at age 13 was Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker. That song, of all the events in my life, had the most profound effect on me and forever changed my course. Even today, 31 years later, whenever I hear John Paul Jones thundering away it immediately takes me back to singular moment. Over the next few months Led Zeppelin became ACDC became Metallica became Bathory became Entombed... and I knew I had been called. Called to metal \m/ Hail.

Slayer by far for me. Once I started learning some of their riffs, I fell in love with Hanneman's and King's styles.
Cannibal Corpse: The main riff before the vocals kick in on "I Cum Blood". Heavy as fuck. And their performance in Moscow. The history of the band, and their commitment to Death Metal for almost 30 years.
    Metallica: that's a given
Sepultura: standard tuning and the incredible riffing on Arise? Hard to not be inspired.
And lately, Devastation. "Idolatry" is a masterpiece. Brilliant lyrics, jaw dropping solos, memorable and head banging riffs. It's like Reign In Blood; once it ends, you just want to start it all over again.

@@twelvelookslike agreed, I play bass and tosin has more of an influence on my playing than most bass players do.

@@glitched100 Yeah the guy is a freak on the guitar. Im a drummer and Matt Garstka is beyond amazing. Navene Koperweis was fantastic also. I have a video on my page I recorded back when Tosin was in the Band reflux. Didn't know who he was at the time.

I know I’ll get shit for this, but I’m a little older and I grew up in the 80’s... James Hetfield made me the guitar player that I am. Plus SLAYER of course...As far as death metal goes, the Hoffman brothers of Deicide, plus, old school hardcore. Sick of it All, Iron Cross, DRI, Minor Threat... That’s the the tip of the iceberg though. Kevin, LOVE you videos brother
